The Effects Of Clay On Glycerol/Carboxylic Acid Polymerization: Implications Of Mineral Controls In Prebiotic Chemistry, Joseph T. Romero
The Effects Of Clay On Glycerol/Carboxylic Acid Polymerization: Implications Of Mineral Controls In Prebiotic Chemistry, Joseph T. Romero
Geology: Student Scholarship & Creative Works
Proto-enzymatic catalysis on early Earth is an important consideration in prebiotic chemistry research as it leads to the understanding of the emergence of the metabolic reaction networks. Contemporary enzymes are comprised of either organic or inorganic factors scaffolded by globular protein structure whereas we consider hyperbranched polyesters as a possible extant scaffold that is easier assembled than the peptide one. The goals of this project are to consider prebiotically plausible starting materials for such structure formation utilizing a subset of conditions for polymer synthesis involving the presence of mineral surfaces as well as temperature and hydration differential. As likely candidates …

Evaluating The Validity And Applicable Domain Of The Toxic Load Model: Impact Of Concentration Vs. Time Profile On Inhalation Lethality Of Hydrogen Cyanide, Lisa M. Sweeney, Douglas R. Summerville, Stephen R. Channel, Brian C. Sharits, Nathan M. Gargas, Chester P. Gut Jr.
United States Army: Publications
The ten Berge model (or ‘‘toxic load’’ model) is often used to estimate the acute toxicity for varying combinations of inhaled concentration and duration. Expressed as Cn X t = toxic load (TL), TLs are assumed constant for various combinations of concentration (C) and time (t). Experimental data in a recent acute inhalation study of rats exposed to time-varying concentrations of hydrogen cyanide (HCN) supported the validity of the toxic load model except under very brief, discontinuous, high concentration exposures. In the present investigation, experiments were conducted to extend the evaluation of the applicable domain of the model for acute …

The objective of this work was to design conjugates of anti-HIV nucleosides conjugated with fatty acids and cell-penetrating poly-L-arginine (polyArg) peptides. Three conjugates of polyArg cell-penetrating peptides with fatty acyl derivatives of alovudine (FLT), lamivudine (3TC), and emtricitabine (FTC) were synthesized. In general, the compounds exhibited anti-HIV activity against X4 and R5 cell-free virus with EC50 values of 1.5–16.6 μM. FLT-CO-(CH2)12-CO-(Arg)7 exhibited EC50 values of 2.9 μM and 3.1 μM against X4 and R5 cell-free virus, respectively. The FLT conjugate was selected for further preformulation studies by determination of solution state …

Elucidating The Conservation Status Of Michigan's Red-Eared Slider (Trachemys Scripta Elegans): A Phylogeographic Approach, Patrick J. Terry
Elucidating The Conservation Status Of Michigan's Red-Eared Slider (Trachemys Scripta Elegans): A Phylogeographic Approach, Patrick J. Terry
Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
The geographic origin of Michigan’s Trachemys scripta elegans has been a contentious subject since its first description in 1934. At that time two explanations were proposed: 1) populations of T. s. elegans are native to Michigan and naturally expanded their range from Ohio and Indiana; or 2) populations are non-native and have been introduced by humans via the pet-trade from throughout the United States. To differentiate between these possibilities, I compare the genetic structure of six populations throughout Indiana, Michigan, and Ohio, using six microsatellite markers. No isolation-by-distance was detected and model-based statistics support two genetic clusters with five populations …
An Introduction To Conservation Easements In The United States: A Simple Concept And A Complicated Mosaic Of Law, Federico Cheever, Nancy A. Mclaughlin
An Introduction To Conservation Easements In The United States: A Simple Concept And A Complicated Mosaic Of Law, Federico Cheever, Nancy A. Mclaughlin
Sturm College of Law: Faculty Scholarship
The idea of a conservation easement – restrictions on the development and use of land designed to protect the land’s conservation or historic values – can be relatively easily understood. More significant and more challenging is the complex body of state and federal laws that shapes the creation, funding, tax treatment, enforcement, modification, and termination of conservation easements.
The explosion in the number of conservation easements over the past four decades has made them one of the most popular land protection mechanisms in the United States. The National Conservation Easement Database estimates that the total number of acres encumbered by …

A Response To Denver Snuffer’S Essay On Plural Marriage, Adoption, And The Supposed Falling Away Of The Church Part 2: Façade Or Reality?, Brian C. Hales
Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship
Part 2 of this response to Denver Snuffer’s essay entitled “Plural Marriage” posted on March 22, 2015, will primarily address non-plural marriage issues as discussed in the last twenty pages.1 Snuffer’s portrayal of adoption teachings and practices is analyzed and shown to be in error, along with his interpretation of presiding priesthood quorums as described in the Doctrine and Covenants. His primary thesis, that The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is in apostasy, is also examined including Snuffer’s personal need for the Church to have fallen away in order to create an opening for his new visionary voice. …

Optimizing The Melanoma Tropism Of Mouse Parvovirus 1a For Use As A Viral Immunotherapy Vector, Matthew Marr
Optimizing The Melanoma Tropism Of Mouse Parvovirus 1a For Use As A Viral Immunotherapy Vector, Matthew Marr
Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library
Melanoma is a prevalent, deadly disease with poor outcomes following metastasis. It is an immunogenic cancer with many unique tumor antigens, but the tumor microenvironment inhibits the immune system. Current monoclonal antibody treatment has been shown to be beneficial in metastatic melanoma by blocking inhibitory immune signals such as PD-1 or CTLA-4. The expression of immunostimulatory proteins such as B7.1 by tumor cells could provide additional immune targeting. Viral vectors based on the parvovirus genome could efficiently and selectively express B7.1 in melanoma cells, such that they become competent to directly activate cognate T cells. Once activated, T cells will …

Despite its clinical success, the mechanism underlying extracorporeal photopheresis (ECP) is not well understood, however, the plate-passage (PP) step appears integral to generating activated monocytes. In the first part of the project, we developed a functional assay to evaluate the efficacy of plate-passed myeloid cells (PPM) compared with freshly isolated, unstimulated monocytes (UM) and conventional dendritic cells derived from blood monocytes cultured with GM-CSF/IL4 (DC). Each of these three antigen presenting cell (APC) was co-cultured with purified, autologous CD8 cells, with or without CD4 cells. Cultures were carried out using melanoma antigen MART-1 "long peptide (LP)," a 25-amino acid peptide …
Isolation Of Bone Marrow Mononuclear Cells For Fabrication Of Tissue-Engineered Vascular Grafts: Evaluation Of Two Methods, Paul S. Bagi
Isolation Of Bone Marrow Mononuclear Cells For Fabrication Of Tissue-Engineered Vascular Grafts: Evaluation Of Two Methods, Paul S. Bagi
Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library
Objective: Tissue engineered vascular grafts (TEVGs) are useful in the surgical treatment of congenital heart defects. The development of TEVGs requires seeding of scaffolds composed of biodegradable polymers with bone marrow-derived mononuclear cells (BM-MNCs). The most common method used to isolate BM-MNCs involves density centrifugation in Ficoll. This process requires an International Organization for Standardization (ISO) class 7 clean room, is labor intensive, time intensive, and susceptible to operator variability. A recently developed filtration-based method for BM-MNC isolation uses a closed, sterile, and disposable system that removes the need for a clean room, decreases processing time, and is operator-independent. This …
Smarcb1-Mutant Intracranial Meningiomas: A Distinct Subtype Of Nf2-Mutant Tumors, Jacob Francis Baranoski
Smarcb1-Mutant Intracranial Meningiomas: A Distinct Subtype Of Nf2-Mutant Tumors, Jacob Francis Baranoski
Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library
Meningiomas are the most common central nervous system primary tumors. Mutations in the tumor suppressor gene Neurofibromin 2 (NF2), located on chromosome 22 (Chr22), are present in 40-50% of sporadic meningiomas. In a subset of non-NF2-mutant meningiomas, recent studies have identified tumorigenesis driver mutations in the genes TRAF7, AKT1, KLF4, and SMO. However, the genetic basis for the marked clinical and histological heterogeneity that exists among NF2-mutant/Chr22-loss meningiomas remains to be established. In this study, we utilized next-generation sequencing techniques to identify and screen a large cohort of NF2-mutant/Chr22-loss meningiomas for concurrent co-driver mutations in novel genes that may contribute …

Reporting Of Results In Clinicaltrials.Gov And High-Impact Journals: A Cross-Sectional Study, Jessica Elizabeth Becker
Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library
In 2007, the FDA Amendments Act expanded requirements for ClinicalTrials.gov, a public clinical trial registry maintained by the U.S. National Library of Medicine, mandating results reporting within 12 months of trial completion for all FDA regulated drugs. We compared clinical trial results reported on ClinicalTrials.gov with corresponding published articles. We conducted a cross-sectional analysis of clinical trials published from July 1, 2010 through June 30, 2011 in high impact journals (impact factor 10 or higher) that were registered and reported results on ClinicalTrials.gov. We compared trial results reported on ClinicalTrials.gov and within published articles for the following: cohort characteristics, trial …

Gender And Depression Among Veterans Of Operation Enduring Freedom, Iraqi Freedom, And New Dawn, Nkemka Esiobu
Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library
The Operation Enduring Freedom/Operation Iraqi Freedom/Operation New Dawn (OEF/OIF/OND) Veterans utilizing Veterans Affairs (VA) services are medically and psychosocially complex, diverse, and rapidly growing. A significant portion of women Veterans seek out mental health services and they are more likely to be diagnosed with major depression than men, however the majority of prior studies informing Veteran mental health services have been done with predominantly male study populations (16,18,19). Our objectives were 1) to identify characteristics associated with a major depression diagnosis among OEF/OIF/OND men and women Veterans after stratifying by gender and 2) to identify gender differences in the nature …
