Forage Symposium at the Kentucky Cattlemen’s Convention
This marks the 20th consecutive year we have done a Forage’s at KCA Program and I find it hard to believe the past 20 years have passed so quickly. The opportunities for forages in Kentucky were indeed great twenty years ago; however, they are much greater now than when we started this Conference.

Pharmaceutical Sciences
Background
Endocannabinoids (ECs) are important contributors to implantation and decidualization and are suppressed in early pregnancy. Elevated levels of anandamide (AEA), the endogenous ligand for the CB1 and CB2 receptors (R), interfere with receptivity of the blastocyst. Ang-(1–7) is down-regulated in the implantation site (IS) in normal pregnancy at day 7 of gestation. We determined the effects of intra-uterine angiotensin-(1–7) [Ang-(1–7)] (24 microg/kg/h) or vehicle given into the left uterine horn on the ECs in the decidualized uterus.
Methods
Ovariectomized rats were sensitized for the decidual cell reaction by steroid treatment and decidualization was induced by a bolus of oil …

Integrated Survival Analysis Using An Event-Time Approach In A Bayesian Framework, Daniel P. Walsh, Victoria J. Dreitz, Dennis M. Heisey
Integrated Survival Analysis Using An Event-Time Approach In A Bayesian Framework, Daniel P. Walsh, Victoria J. Dreitz, Dennis M. Heisey
Wildlife Biology Faculty Publications
Event-time or continuous-time statistical approaches have been applied throughout the bio-statistical literature and have led to numerous scientific advances. However, these techniques have traditionally relied on knowing failure times. this has limited application of these analyses, particularly, within the ecological field where fates of marked animals may be unknown. To address these limitations, we developed in integrated approach within a Bayesian framework to estimate hazard rates in the face of unknown fates. We combine failure/survival times from individuals whose fates are known and times of which are interval-censored with information from those whose fates are unknown, and model the process …
A Synthesis Of Terrestrial Carbon Balance Of Alaska And Projected Changes In The 21st Century: Implications For Climate Policy And Carbon Management, A. D. Mcguire
Research Posters
To better understand how carbon responses to changes in climate and other drivers in Alaska might influence national climate and carbon management policies, the U.S. Geological Survey, in collaboration with the USDA Forest Service and university scientists, has conducted a comprehensive assessment of the historical (1960-2009) and projected (2010-2099) carbon balance for Alaska. This assessment of carbon dynamics in Alaska includes (1) syntheses of soil, vegetation, and surface water carbon stocks and fluxes in Alaska, and (2) state of the art models of fire dynamics, vegetation change, forest management, permafrost dynamics, and upland, wetland, and surface water ecosystem carbon dynamics. …
Microarray Enriched Gene Rank, Eugene Demidenko
Microarray Enriched Gene Rank, Eugene Demidenko
Dartmouth Scholarship
We develop a new concept that reflects how genes are connected based on microarray data using the coefficient of determination (the squared Pearson correlation coefficient). Our gene rank combines a priori knowledge about gene connectivity, say, from the Gene Ontology (GO) database, and the microarray expression data at hand, called the microarray enriched gene rank, or simply gene rank (GR). GR, similarly to Google PageRank, is defined in a recursive fashion and is computed as the left maximum eigenvector of a stochastic matrix derived from microarray expression data. An efficient algorithm is devised that allows computation of GR for 50 …

Lost In Institution: Learning To Write In Midwestern Urban Mainstream Classrooms, Yanan Fan
Journal of Southeast Asian American Education and Advancement
How do recent immigrant students learn to write in mainstream content area classrooms? This article considers this question in the under-investigated American Midwest contexts where schooling is being reframed by rapid changing demographics. Data for this paper come from an ethnographic case study of second language learning of a Vietnamese 9th grader in an urban school setting. Grounded in a sociocultural view of learning, the author examines (1) how the student negotiated the nature and purpose of writing among inconsistent expectations, objectives and responsibilities in mainstream, and (2) how she was lost in a lack of vision in literacy and …

A New Anomiopus Westwood From Peru (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae: Scarabaeinae), Luis Figueroa, W. D. Edmonds
Insecta Mundi
Described, illustrated and discussed is a strikingly distinct new species of the scarabaeine genus Anomiopus Westwood, A. apuskispay Figueroa and Edmonds, from the Chanchamayo montane forest region of eastern Peru. It is a close relative of the recently described A. pishtaco, also from eastern Peru. Both species are noteworthy because of the bizarre form of the male clypeus, which bears extravagantly developed marginal teeth.

Hessian fly (Mayetiola destructor), a member of the gall midge family, is one of the most destructive pests of wheat (Triticum aestivum) worldwide. Probing of wheat plants by the larvae results in either an incompatible (avirulent larvae, resistant plant) or a compatible (virulent larvae, susceptible plant) interaction. Virulent larvae induce the formation of a nutritive tissue, resembling the inside surface of a gall, in susceptible wheat. These nutritive cells are a rich source of proteins and sugars that sustain the developing virulent Hessian fly larvae. In addition, on susceptible wheat, larvae trigger a significant increase in levels of amino acids …

Identification And Characterization Of N-Acyltransferase Enzymes That Are Involved In The Biosynthesis Of Fatty Acid Amides, Daniel Robert Dempsey
Identification And Characterization Of N-Acyltransferase Enzymes That Are Involved In The Biosynthesis Of Fatty Acid Amides, Daniel Robert Dempsey
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Fatty acid amides are an emerging family of bioactive lipids that consists of N-acylethanolamines, N-acylarylalkylamides, N-acylglycines, N-acyl amino acids, N-monoacylpolyamides, and primary fatty acid amides. Short chain fatty acid amides are products of inactivated biogenic amines such as dopamine, histamine, octopamine, and serotonin, whereas long chain fatty acid amides have been implicated in a number of physiological process such as the perception and inhibition of chronic pain through binding to their specific receptors. The most famous; therefore, the most studied long chain fatty acid amide is anandamide or also known as N-arachidonylethanolamine. The biosynthesis …

Ploidy Variation In Multinucleate Cells Changes Under Stress, Cori A. Anderson, Samantha Roberts, Huaiying Zhang, Courtney M. Kelly, Alexxy Kendall, Changhwan Lee, John Gerstenberger, Aaron B. Koenig, Ruth Kabeche, Amy S. Gladfelter
Dartmouth Scholarship
Ploidy variation is found in contexts as diverse as solid tumors, drug resistance in fungal infection, and normal development. Altering chromosome or genome copy number supports adaptation to fluctuating environments but is also associated with fitness defects attributed to protein imbalances. Both aneuploidy and polyploidy can arise from multinucleate states after failed cytokinesis or cell fusion. The consequences of ploidy variation in syncytia are difficult to predict because protein imbalances are theoretically buffered by a common cytoplasm. We examined ploidy in a naturally multinucleate fungus, Ashbya gossypii. Using integrated lac operator arrays, we found that chromosome number varies substantially …

Reconstitution of CMV-specific immunity after transplant remains a primary clinical objective to prevent CMV disease, and adoptive immunotherapy of CMV-specific T cells can be an effective therapeutic approach. Because of viral persistence, most CMV-specific CD8(+) T cells become terminally differentiated effector phenotype CD8(+) T cells (TEFF). A minor subset retains a memory-like phenotype (memory phenotype CD8(+) T cells [TM]), but it is unknown whether these cells retain memory function or persist over time. Interestingly, recent studies suggest that CMV-specific CD8(+) T cells with different phenotypes have different abilities to reconstitute sustained immunity after transfer. The immunology of human CMV infections …
Magnetotactic Bacteria As Potential Sources Of Bioproducts, Ana Carolina V. Araujo, Fernanda Abreu, Karen Tavares Silva, Dennis A. Bazylinski, Ulysses Lins
Magnetotactic Bacteria As Potential Sources Of Bioproducts, Ana Carolina V. Araujo, Fernanda Abreu, Karen Tavares Silva, Dennis A. Bazylinski, Ulysses Lins
Life Sciences Faculty Research
Magnetotactic bacteria (MTB) produce intracellular organelles called magnetosomes which are magnetic nanoparticles composed of magnetite (Fe3O4) or greigite (Fe3S4) enveloped by a lipid bilayer. The synthesis of a magnetosome is through a genetically controlled process in which the bacterium has control over the composition, direction of crystal growth, and the size and shape of the mineral crystal. As a result of this control, magnetosomes have narrow and uniform size ranges, relatively specific magnetic and crystalline properties, and an enveloping biological membrane. These features are not observed in magnetic particles produced abiotically and …

Accidental Poison: Analysis Of 1,4-Butanediol In A Popular Children's Arts And Crafts Toy, Christopher R. Dockery, John H. Shugart, Jonathan D. Parker, William J. Lawson
Faculty Articles
A popular children's arts and crafts toy made international headlines when it was discovered that 1,4-butanediol had been substituted into some of its formulations. The chemical 1,4-butanediol rapidly converts to the date-rape drug g-hydroxybutyric acid (GHB) upon ingestion and resulted in the accidental poisoning of some children. In this experiment, students extract 1,4-butanediol from commercially available toy beads (or prepared simulations) using their knowledge of pharmaceutical chemistry, solubility, etc. Using case studies available in the literature, students develop a quantitative analysis experiment for 1,4-butanediol extracted from the toy beads and, through approximation, relate the extractable amount of 1,4-butanediol to dose-response …

The Moderating Impact Of Giftedness On The Relationship Between Existential Anxiety, Authenticity, And Depression In College Students, Donnalin Cl Constantin
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
The present study investigated whether the experience of existential anxiety influenced depression in the presence of authenticity and whether the experience was the same for identified and non-identified gifted college students. The exploratory study sought to examine these relationships in the context of emerging adulthood among a sample of 207 college students between the ages of 18 and 24 years, from a mid-sized urban university in the southern United States. Results indicated that influences of existential anxiety and authenticity on depression were not significantly different for students identified as gifted compared with the non-identified gifted. In addition, constructs associated with …

Multiple-Time Step Ab Initio Molecular Dynamics Based On Two-Electron Integral Screening, Shervin Fatehi, Ryan P. Steele
School of Integrative Biological & Chemical Sciences (Formerly Dept. of Chemistry)
A multiple-timestep ab initio molecular dynamics scheme based on varying the two-electron integral screening method used in Hartree–Fock or density functional theory calculations is presented. Although screening is motivated by numerical considerations, it is also related to separations in the length- and timescales characterizing forces in a molecular system: Loose thresholds are sufficient to describe fast motions over short distances, while tight thresholds may be employed for larger length scales and longer times, leading to a practical acceleration of ab initio molecular dynamics simulations. Standard screening approaches can lead, however, to significant discontinuities in (and inconsistencies between) the energy and …

Role Of Family, Culture, And Peers In The Success Of First-Generation Cambodian American College Students, Jennifer Tang, Simon Kim, Don Haviland
Role Of Family, Culture, And Peers In The Success Of First-Generation Cambodian American College Students, Jennifer Tang, Simon Kim, Don Haviland
Journal of Southeast Asian American Education and Advancement
Cambodian American college students are often overlooked in academe because of the model minority myth. The stereotype overshadows the challenges and heterogeneity in the Asian American and Pacific Islander population. This exploratory study examined the experiences of 13 first-generation Cambodian American college students at a large, public institution in California. Findings revealed that, despite obstacles of being first-generation with limited cultural capital, students were transformed into successful leaners when they received validation from their parents and peers and felt a sense of belonging to the college community through their involvement in an ethnic-based student organization.
Learning English And "Smartness": Refugee Students Negotiate Language, Reception, And Ability In School, Liv Thorstensson
Learning English And "Smartness": Refugee Students Negotiate Language, Reception, And Ability In School, Liv Thorstensson
Journal of Southeast Asian American Education and Advancement
This article analyzes how Southeast Asian refugee high school students negotiated “smartness” and language learning at a low-performing, urban high school in the U.S. southeast. Findings are drawn from a year-long qualitative study that examined the identities of refugee students from Vietnam’s Central Highlands. The conceptual framework is built on sociocultural theories of identity and language learning (Bourdieu, 1991; Holland, Skinner, Lachicotte & Cain, 1998) and illuminates the contextual and relational nature of students’ identity articulation in school. Findings underscore the ways in which racialized discourses perpetuated by teachers and peers simultaneously positioned them as model minorities and undermined their …
Labor Market Discrimination: Vietnamese Immigrants, Linus Yamane
Labor Market Discrimination: Vietnamese Immigrants, Linus Yamane
Journal of Southeast Asian American Education and Advancement
Vietnamese and East European immigrants face similar obstacles in the US labor market. This provides for an interesting test of racial discrimination in the labor market. Does it make any difference if an immigrant is Asian or White? When Vietnamese immigrants are compared to East European immigrants, Vietnamese men earn 7-9% less than comparable East European men, with more discrimination among the less educated, and in the larger Vietnamese population centers like California. Vietnamese women earn as much as comparable East European women. Vietnamese immigrants, male and female, are much less likely to hold managerial and supervisory positions than comparable …

Racism, Schooling, And The Streets: A Critical Analysis Of Vietnamese American Youth Gang Formation In Southern California, Kevin D. Lam
Journal of Southeast Asian American Education and Advancement
This paper is an analysis of the relationship between educational experiences, street life, and gang formation for Vietnamese American youth gang members in Southern California. I use critical narrative methodology to center the life and experiences of a Los Angeles area gang member. His narrative substantiates how racism in schools and on the streets works together to impact and inform gang formation. Schools were sites of inter-ethnic conflict and racialized tension, and streets were spaces for contentious interactions with the police. In addition, I place the Vietnamese American youth gang phenomenon in larger historical and political contexts such as Californias …
