Active Management Of The Third Stage Of Labor By Skilled Birth Attendants In A Rural Regional Hospital In Southern Ethiopia: A Qualitative Case Study, Marcella J. Gowan Jan 2015

Active Management Of The Third Stage Of Labor By Skilled Birth Attendants In A Rural Regional Hospital In Southern Ethiopia: A Qualitative Case Study, Marcella J. Gowan

Doctor of Education (EdD)

In Ethiopia, as in many developing countries, postpartum hemorrhage (PPH) is the leading cause of maternal mortality. PPH can be prevented through a three-step practice called active management of the third stage of labor (AMTSL), which can be learned by a skilled birth attendant (SBA). However, most SBAs have not adopted AMTSL into practice. The purpose of this case study was to investigate the use of AMTSL among SBAs in a rural regional hospital in southern Ethiopia. Six theoretical propositions and a conceptual framework were designed to guide the research and analysis. In-depth interviews were conducted with SBAs who worked …

Enabling Cyber Physical Systems With Wireless Sensor Networking Technologies, Multiagent System Paradigm, And Natural Ecosystems, Nafaâ Jabeur, Nabil Sahli, Sherali Zeadally Jan 2015

Enabling Cyber Physical Systems With Wireless Sensor Networking Technologies, Multiagent System Paradigm, And Natural Ecosystems, Nafaâ Jabeur, Nabil Sahli, Sherali Zeadally

Information Science Faculty Publications

Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) are key components in the emergent cyber physical systems (CPSs). They may include hundreds of spatially distributed sensors which interact to solve complex tasks going beyond their individual capabilities. Due to the limited capabilities of sensors, sensor actions cannot meet CPS requirements while controlling and coordinating the operations of physical and engineered systems. To overcome these constraints, we explore the ecosystem metaphor for WSNs with the aim of taking advantage of the efficient adaptation behavior and communication mechanisms of living organisms. By mapping these organisms onto sensors and ecosystems onto WSNs, we highlight shortcomings that prevent …

Variation In Rheumatoid Hand And Wrist Surgery Among Medicare Beneficiaries: A Population-Based Cohort Study, Lin Zhong, Kevin C. Chung, Onur Baser, David A. Fox, Huseyin Yuce, Jennifer F. Waljee Jan 2015

Variation In Rheumatoid Hand And Wrist Surgery Among Medicare Beneficiaries: A Population-Based Cohort Study, Lin Zhong, Kevin C. Chung, Onur Baser, David A. Fox, Huseyin Yuce, Jennifer F. Waljee

Publications and Research

Objective. To examine the rate and variation in rheumatoid arthritis (RA)-related hand and wrist surgery among Medicare (elderly) beneficiaries in the United States, and to identify the patient and provider factors that influence surgical rates.

Methods. Using the 2006–2010 100% Medicare claims data of beneficiaries with RA diagnosis, we examined rates of rheumatoid hand and wrist arthroplasty, arthrodesis, and hand tendon reconstruction in the United States. We used multivariate logistic regression models to examine variation in receipt of surgery by patient and regional characteristics (density of providers, intensity of use of biologic disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs).

Results. Between 2006 and 2010, …

Periodic Body-And-Bar Frameworks, Ciprian Borcea, Ileana Streinu, Shin-Ichi Tanigawa Jan 2015

Periodic Body-And-Bar Frameworks, Ciprian Borcea, Ileana Streinu, Shin-Ichi Tanigawa

Computer Science: Faculty Publications

Periodic body-and-bar frameworks are abstractions of crystalline structures made of rigid bodies connected by fixed-length bars and subject to the action of a lattice of translations. We give a Maxwell–Laman characterization for minimally rigid periodic body-and-bar frameworks in terms of their quotient graphs. As a consequence we obtain efficient polynomial time algorithms for their recognition based on matroid partition and pebble games.

Department of Pathology, Anatomy, and Cell Biology Faculty Papers

Tightly regulated Ca(2+) homeostasis is a prerequisite for proper cardiac function. To dissect the regulatory network of cardiac Ca(2+) handling, we performed a chemical suppressor screen on zebrafish tremblor embryos, which suffer from Ca(2+) extrusion defects. Efsevin was identified based on its potent activity to restore coordinated contractions in tremblor. We show that efsevin binds to VDAC2, potentiates mitochondrial Ca(2+) uptake and accelerates the transfer of Ca(2+) from intracellular stores into mitochondria. In cardiomyocytes, efsevin restricts the temporal and spatial boundaries of Ca(2+) sparks and thereby inhibits Ca(2+) overload-induced erratic Ca(2+) waves and irregular contractions. We further show that overexpression …

Predictors Of Types And Frequencies Of Sexual Fantasies: Body Image Self-Consciousness And Gender, Brienne M. Allen Jan 2015

Predictors Of Types And Frequencies Of Sexual Fantasies: Body Image Self-Consciousness And Gender, Brienne M. Allen

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Having sexual fantasies is a common experience for men and women throughout their lives, typically beginning during the time of puberty. The existing body of research involving sexual fantasies illustrates that there are positive aspects related to experiencing sexual fantasies as well as negative emotions that may arise as a result, making it important to understand the factors that predict sexual fantasies. Moreover, societal pressures for thinness and muscularity can lead to body image self-consciousness (BISC) and have an impact on one's sexual fantasies. Fantasies can be used to increase arousal, pleasure, and enjoyment even though one's experience of his …
