The War On Drugs: An Analysis Of The Rhetoric According To Richard Weaver’S Theory Of Ultimate Terms, Cristina Peniche Dec 2015

The War On Drugs: An Analysis Of The Rhetoric According To Richard Weaver’S Theory Of Ultimate Terms, Cristina Peniche

Masters Theses

The language associated with President Nixon’s ‘war on drugs’ has sparked considerable debate in the political struggle against narcotics' abuse and crime, as well as within scholarly research. There is a language associated with the debate and it reflects the primary considerations of policy makers- economics, criminal behavior, and morality. The present study discusses these qualities as well as the rhetorical ideas of Richard Weaver, specifically his theory of ultimate terms. Then, discussions within research show the discontent that scholars bear towards narcotics'-related language. Specifically, there is concern that the rhetoric may stigmatize certain populations and hinder better outcomes. As …

Characterising Cytotoxicity And Genotoxicity Of Chemotherapeutic Agents (Etoposide And Vincristine) On Tk6, A Human Lymphoblastoid Cell Line, Leanne Edermaniger

The Plymouth Student Scientist

The ability of the chemotherapeutic agents namely etoposide and vincristine to cause cytotoxic and genotoxic damage to the human lymphoblastoid cell line, TK6, was at the centre of this study. Four different cytotoxic assays were tested for their ability to assess the cytotoxicity of the agents as well as two genotoxic assays to examine their ability to induce DNA damage. The TK6 cell line was exposed to increasing doses of the chemotherapeutic agents and cytoxicity assessed by in vitro trypan blue, neutral red uptake, LDH leakage and the glucose oxidase assays. The trypan blue assay was deemed to be the …

Exposure To Predator Kairomones Influences Egg Number And Size In Littorina Littorea, Jessica Raynor, Simon Rundle

The Plymouth Student Scientist

Predator kairomones play an important role in intertidal ecosystems, but knowledge on their potential role in influencing maternal effects is lacking. The aim of this study was to test whether egg production by female Littorina littorea was influenced by short-term exposure to predator kairomones before egg laying. Laboratory populations were exposed to predator cues from the intertidal crab Carcinus maenas for nine days, and egg number, egg size, and survivorship of the offspring were measured and compared with those from reference populations. Snails exposed to predator cues produced significantly more eggs, which were also significantly smaller than those produced from …

It was therefore concluded that energy harvesting within a divers rebreather system is feasibility.

The Efficacy Of Levodopa+Ddc Inhibitor+Entacapone Versus Levodopa+Ddc Inhibitor+Placebo In Parkinson's Disease: An Intervention Review, Jennifer Harrison Dec 2015

The Efficacy Of Levodopa+Ddc Inhibitor+Entacapone Versus Levodopa+Ddc Inhibitor+Placebo In Parkinson's Disease: An Intervention Review, Jennifer Harrison

The Plymouth Student Scientist

Parkinson's disease (PD) has many possible treatment options. The main therapy uses a drug called levodopa. However after prolonged use, this drug begins to wear off and becomes less effective. Therefore additional drugs are needed to help ensure the patient is comfortable and to aid the relief of symptoms that can often occur. The addition of the COMT inhibitor, entacapone, aims to reduce motor symptoms and smooth out fluctuations that can sometimes be experienced with levodopa therapy. These can include bradykinesia, which is slowness of movement and help to control the resting tremor that is often associated with PD. The …

You Can't Tickle Yourself...Or Can You? The Effect Of A Hypnotic Suggestion On Sensory Attenuation Phenomenon, Shamsideen Yusuf Dec 2015

You Can't Tickle Yourself...Or Can You? The Effect Of A Hypnotic Suggestion On Sensory Attenuation Phenomenon, Shamsideen Yusuf

The Plymouth Student Scientist

The internal motor simulation mechanism is widely believed to generate anticipatory sensory outcomes on the basis of the efferent copy of the motor commands. What is currently unknown is whether the motor prediction mechanism can integrate non-motor inputs such as a hypnotic suggestion in generating sensory predictions. Seventy-two undergraduate students (M=12, F=60) were recruited via Plymouth University participation pool, to undergo a randomised hypnotic suggestion (IV) of either an alien- hand or an alien-foot. The participants were asked to apply tactile stimulation to their left palm (DV) before and after the suggestion and report the tickling sensations. The results revealed …

Bimetallic-Waveguide Coupled Sensors For Tunable Plasmonic Devices, Kunal K. Tiwari Dec 2015

Bimetallic-Waveguide Coupled Sensors For Tunable Plasmonic Devices, Kunal K. Tiwari

Physics Dissertations - Archive

Surface plasmon resonance (SPR) has been a widely used optical technique for the real time and label free sensing applications in biomedicine, homeland security, food safety, environmental monitoring, etc. Surface plasmons (SPs) being extremely sensitive to the surrounding media, their characteristics can be modulated by tuning their dielectric environment. The unique property of the nematic liquid crystalline materials that their dielectric constant can be tuned by externally applied electric fields formed the basis for development of tunable plasmonic sensor for monitoring changes at metal/dielectric interfaces. Even though sensors with high sensitivity are available, it remains highly desirable to enhance sensor …

Plant and Soil Sciences Faculty Publications

Tobacco blue mold, caused by the obligately biotrophic oomycete pathogen Peronospora tabacina D.B. Adam, is a major foliar disease that results in significant losses in tobacco-growing areas. Natural resistance to P. tabacina has not been identified in any variety of common tobacco. Complete resistance, conferred by RBM1, was found in N. debneyi and was transferred into cultivated tobacco by crossing. In the present study, we characterized the RBM1-mediated resistance to blue mold in tobacco and show that the hypersensitive response (HR) plays an important role in the host defense reactions. Genetic mapping indicated that the disease resistance …

Physics Faculty Publications and Presentations

There are many methods that can be used to incorporate concepts of crystallography into the learning experiences of students, whether they are in elementary school, at university or part of the public at large. It is not always critical that those who teach crystallography have immediate access to diffraction equipment to be able to introduce the concepts of symmetry, packing or molecular structure in an age- and audience-appropriate manner. Crystallography can be used as a tool for teaching general chemistry concepts as well as general research techniques without ever having a student determine a crystal structure. Thus, methods for younger …

Sophorolipid Production From Lignocellulosic Biomass Feedstocks, Abdul Samad Dec 2015

Sophorolipid Production From Lignocellulosic Biomass Feedstocks, Abdul Samad

Theses

The present study investigated the feasibility of production of sophorolipids (SLs) using yeast Candida bombicola grown on hydrolysates derived lignocellulosic feedstock either with or without supplementing oil as extra carbon source. Several researchers have reported using pure sugars and various oil sources for producing SLs which makes them expensive for scale-up and commercial production. In order to make the production process truly sustainable and renewable, we used feedstocks such as sweet sorghum bagasse, corn fiber and corn stover. Without oil supplementation, the cell densities at the end of day-8 was recorded as 9.2, 9.8 and 10.8 g/L for hydrolysate derived …

Uncovering Potential Causes Of Resistance Of Soybean To Scn, Oleksandra Zatserklyana

Theses

It is widely known that Glycine max L. Merr., commonly known as soybean is one of the major agricultural crops in the United States and is an agricultural crop in other countries as well. Yet, the yearly yield of soybean is not as high as can be expected due to Heterodera glycines Ichinole, or soybean cyst nematode (later, SCN). SCN is one of the most destructive pests and pathogens of soybean and the main methods for control have proven to be problematic and time-consuming so far (Koenning 2000; UIPC 2015). Lineages of soybean that are resistant to SCN have been …

Gene Networks Involved In Competitive Root Colonization And Nodulation In The Sinorhizobium Meliloti-Medicago Truncatula Symbiosis, Ryan D. Vanyperen Dec 2015

Gene Networks Involved In Competitive Root Colonization And Nodulation In The Sinorhizobium Meliloti-Medicago Truncatula Symbiosis, Ryan D. Vanyperen

Theses and Dissertations

The rhizobia-legume symbiosis is the most agriculturally significant source of naturally fixed nitrogen, accounting for almost 25% of all biologically available nitrogen. Rhizobia-legume compatibility restrictions impose limits on symbiotic nitrogen fixation. In many cases, the molecular basis for symbiotic compatibility is not fully understood. The signals required for establishing a symbiotic partnership between nitrogen-fixing bacteria (e.g. Sinorhizobium meliloti) and leguminous plants (e.g. Medicago truncatula) have been partially characterized at the molecular level. The first stage of successful root colonization is competitive occupation of the rhizosphere (which is poorly understood). Here, the bacteria introduce themselves as potential symbiotic partners …

This dissertation focuses on the electrochemical formation of one-dimensional (1D) Ag nanostructures (in particular nanowires and nanochains) directly on electrode surfaces or gap of two electrodes. Ag nanowires (NWs) and nanorods (NRs) grow directly on glass/indium tin oxide (ITO) surfaces from electrode-attached Au nanoparticle seeds in the presence of cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) at appropriate potentials with a 5-15 % yield and the average length ranging from 100 nm to 3 µm for growth times of 30 to 120 min. This method failed when trying to grow Ag NRs/NWs across 5 µm Au electrode gaps. Interestingly, applying voltage in air leads …

Effects Of Resistance Training And Creatine Monohydrate On Doxorubicin-Induced Muscle Dysfunction, Eric Christopher Bredahl Dec 2015

Effects Of Resistance Training And Creatine Monohydrate On Doxorubicin-Induced Muscle Dysfunction, Eric Christopher Bredahl

Dissertations

Doxorubicin (DOX) is a powerful chemotherapy agent that is associated with a number of deleterious side effects, including skeletal muscle dysfunction. The exact mechanisms behind the observed skeletal muscle dysfunction have yet to be fully understood. Nonetheless, the observed myotoxicity is believed to be the result of an increased oxidative stress. Resistance training (RT) has been shown to preserve skeletal muscle function in DOX treated muscles. Conversely, creatine (Cr) has been shown to improve skeletal muscle function. Yet, there has been no investigation into the effect of combined RT and Cr on DOX-induced muscle dysfunction. Thus, the possibility exists that …

Exploring Male Counselors’ Experiences With Vulnerability In The Counseling Relationship, Hannah Edith Davis Kreider Dec 2015

Exploring Male Counselors’ Experiences With Vulnerability In The Counseling Relationship, Hannah Edith Davis Kreider

Dissertations

While existing literature clearly indicates that the relationship between counselor and client is important and crucial for therapeutic progress (e.g., Norcross & Wampold, 2011), little research has been done on the experiences of counselors within the therapeutic relationship. Vulnerability has been noted as an important component of growth-fostering relationships (e.g., Jordan, 2008), however research is lacking on how counselors experience vulnerability with their clients. Within the field of counseling, men are underrepresented (Michel, Hall, Hays, & Runyan, 2013) and little research exists exploring their unique experiences as counselors. Additionally, due to gender role socialization, men are likely to struggle with …
