Macrobenthic Communities In The Northern Gulf Of Mexico Hypoxic Zone: Testing The Pearson-Rosenberg Model, Shivakumar Shivarudrappa Dec 2015

Macrobenthic Communities In The Northern Gulf Of Mexico Hypoxic Zone: Testing The Pearson-Rosenberg Model, Shivakumar Shivarudrappa

Dissertations

The Pearson and Rosenberg (P-R) conceptual model of macrobenthic succession was used to assess the impact of hypoxia (dissolved oxygen [DO] ≤ 2 mg/L) on the macrobenthic community on the continental shelf of northern Gulf of Mexico for the first time. The model uses a stress-response relationship between environmental parameters and the macrobenthic community to determine the ecological condition of the benthic habitat. The ecological significance of dissolved oxygen in a benthic habitat is well understood. In addition, the annual recurrence of bottom-water hypoxia on the Louisiana/Texas shelf during summer months is well documented.

The P-R model illustrates the decreasing …

Asymmetric Synthesis Of Cα-Methyl-Γ- And Δ-Amino Acids From A Common Synthon And Evaluation Of Thionyl Chloride Assisted Peptide Esterifications, Emily Rose Vogel Dec 2015

Asymmetric Synthesis Of Cα-Methyl-Γ- And Δ-Amino Acids From A Common Synthon And Evaluation Of Thionyl Chloride Assisted Peptide Esterifications, Emily Rose Vogel

Dissertations

Cα-methyl-γ- and δ-unnatural amino acids (UAAs) are important class of biomolecules used extensively as structural scaffolds, peptidomimetics, and in the development of pharmaceuticals. Due to steric congestion surrounding the quaternary center, asymmetric preparation of α,α-disubstituted UAAs are synthetically challenging. Herein, two methods for the synthesis of chiral synthons to prepare Cα-methyl-γ- and -δ-UAAs are reported. A crucial step in both strategies includes an enzymatic hydrolysis of prochiral malonic esters with pig liver esterase (PLE). The first method utilizes the Meyer Schuster rearrangement to prepare α,β-unsaturated diesters synthons, but the preparation of the precursor propargyl alcohol decomposes …

Hydrogen Bond-Mediated Structural Order In Hydroxylated Bis-Mpa Dendritic Polymers: Experimental And Molecular Dynamics Simulation Study, Maliha N. Syed Dec 2015

Hydrogen Bond-Mediated Structural Order In Hydroxylated Bis-Mpa Dendritic Polymers: Experimental And Molecular Dynamics Simulation Study, Maliha N. Syed

Dissertations

Dendritic architectures are echoed throughout nature. While the significance of these pervasive patterns is not entirely clear, connections between their structures and physical properties are fascinating to contemplate. Particular interest has been paid to a family of synthetically manufactured and commercially available dendritic polymers based on 2,2-bis(hydroxymethyl) propionic acid (bis-MPA) as a monomer. Composed of two hydroxyls and a carboxyl group, bis-MPA based structures hydrogen bond (H-bond) profusely. Given the high concentration and unique spatial orientation of end-groups, as well as the multitude of carbonyl, ester, and ether interior H-bond acceptors, a set of distinct H-bond organizations may be observed …

Nurse Educators' Transition To Flipped Classroom: An Interpretive Description Study, Jean S. Bernard Dec 2015

Nurse Educators' Transition To Flipped Classroom: An Interpretive Description Study, Jean S. Bernard

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

To meet learning needs of current undergraduate nursing students, and respond to mandates for bettered prepared graduates, nurse educators must restructure curricula and teaching strategies. One strategy garnering increased attention is the flipped classroom model (FCM). This form of instruction requires students to have access to and be accountable for lecture material on their own time, and then use face-to-face classroom time for interactive learning that can include discussion, case study analysis, or application of pre-class lecture content. Although the FCM has gained popularity, few researchers have fully studied this strategy or considered experiences of faculty who implement the model. …

What A Dream Was Here: An Ontological Approach To Love And Magic In Shakespeare’S A Midsummer Night’S Dream, Brittany May Rebarchik Dec 2015

What A Dream Was Here: An Ontological Approach To Love And Magic In Shakespeare’S A Midsummer Night’S Dream, Brittany May Rebarchik

Theses and Dissertations

This paper takes Heidegger’s notion of world disclosure and uses it for extended thematic analyses of A Midsummer Night’s Dream. In contrast to the majority of Shakespeare critics who treat Shakespeare’s use of magic as an epistemological issue, I argue that the main action of the play develops through an inherent contradiction between the magical and non-magical ontological states of the characters and the love that results. Borrowing from German philosopher Martin Heidegger, I demonstrate magic’s role as a catalyst in giving certain kinds of love a “shift of existence.” I show that the characters come more fully into being, …

Tailoring Student Learning: Inquiry-Based Learning In The Elementary Art Classroom, Jeffrey Melvin Cornwall

Theses and Dissertations

This research study explored the role of the elementary art educator in facilitating individualized learning experiences for students in contrast to a standardized culture of education. The methodology of a/r/tography was used to investigate the role of the teacher, as well as artist and researcher, within an inquiry-based art curriculum for a fifth grade class. Inspired by contemporary art practices, students used inquiry to investigate, research and experiment with their ideas around an integrated topic of compare and contrast as found within the fifth grade science and language arts standards. Students created a work of art as a means to …

Influence Of Habitat And Intrinsic Characteristics On Survival Of Neonatal Pronghorn, Christopher N. Jacques, Jonathan A. Jenks, Troy W. Grovenburg, Robert Wayne Klaver Dec 2015

Influence Of Habitat And Intrinsic Characteristics On Survival Of Neonatal Pronghorn, Christopher N. Jacques, Jonathan A. Jenks, Troy W. Grovenburg, Robert Wayne Klaver

Natural Resource Management Faculty Publications

Increased understanding of the influence of habitat (e.g., composition, patch size) and intrinsic (e.g., age, birth mass) factors on survival of neonatal pronghorn (Antilocapra americana) is a prerequisite to successful management programs, particularly as they relate to population dynamics and the role of population models in adaptive species management. Nevertheless, few studies have presented empirical data quantifying the influence of habitat variables on survival of neonatal pronghorn. During 2002–2005, we captured and radiocollared 116 neonates across two sites in western South Dakota. We documented 31 deaths during our study, of which coyote (Canis latrans) predation (n = 15) was the …

Calcium Signaling And Ca2+/Calmodulin-Dependent Kinase Ii Activity In Epithelial To Mesenchymal Transition, Melissa Ann Mcneil Dec 2015

Calcium Signaling And Ca2+/Calmodulin-Dependent Kinase Ii Activity In Epithelial To Mesenchymal Transition, Melissa Ann Mcneil

Theses and Dissertations

Epithelial to mesenchymal transition (EMT) is an important process in embryonic development, tissue repair, inflammation, and cancer. During EMT, epithelial cells disassemble cell-cell adhesions, lose apicobasal polarity, and initiate migratory and invasive processes that allow individual cells to colonize distant sites. It is the means by which non-invasive tumors progress into malignant, metastatic carcinomas. In vitro, EMT occurs in two steps. First, cells spread out, increasing in surface area and pushing the colony borders out. Then cells contract, pulling away from neighboring cells and rupturing cell-cell junctions, resulting in individual highly migratory cells. Recent discoveries indicate that calcium signaling is …

Molecular Targets Of Manuka Honey In Human Breast Cancer, Sarah Saif Al Qubaisi Dec 2015

Molecular Targets Of Manuka Honey In Human Breast Cancer, Sarah Saif Al Qubaisi

Theses

The medicinal properties of Manuka honey have been extensively studied, particularly in terms of its wound healing and antimicrobial activities. We have previously demonstrated that Manuka honey also has anti-cancer properties against a variety of cancer cell types in vitro as well as in preclinical cancer models. The cellular targets of the anti-cancer activity of Manuka honey, however, remain unknown. For the present study, we selected the triple negative human breast cancer cell line, MDA-MB-231, to investigate susceptibility to Manuka honey and to identify the potential signaling pathways affected. MDA-MB-231 cancer cells are known to constitutively express activated STAT3 transcription …

Indian Journal of Research in Homoeopathy

Adverse side effects of chemotherapy during cancer treatment have shifted considerable focus towards therapies that are not only targeted but are also devoid of toxic side effects. We evaluated the antitumorigenic activity of sulphur, and delineated the molecular mechanisms underlying sulphurinduced apoptosis in non-small cell lung carcinoma (NSCLC) cells. A search for the underlying mechanism revealed that the choice between the two cellular processes, NFκBp65-mediated survival and p53-mediated apoptosis, was decided by the competition for a limited pool of transcriptional coactivator protein p300 in NSCLC cells. In contrast, sulphur inhibited otherwise upregulated survival signaling in NSCLC cells by perturbing the …

Structural And Functional Studies Of The Papain-Like Protease 2 From Mouse Hepatitis Virus, Yafang Chen Dec 2015

Structural And Functional Studies Of The Papain-Like Protease 2 From Mouse Hepatitis Virus, Yafang Chen

Open Access Dissertations

Our goal is to establish a system to investigate how the deubiquitinating (DUB) and deISGylating activities of coronavirus (CoV) papain-like protease domains (PLPs) are involved in virus immune evasion. To this end, we chose PLP2 from mouse hepatitis virus (MHV) as our target of study because MHV has historically served as a model system for the study of CoVs, and it has undeniable advantage of ease in culturing in comparison to human coronaviruses.

It is reported here the expression and purification of a region of MHV nsp3 that contains the catalytic core of the PLP2 domain and its neighboring domains. …

Impacts Of River Influence And Wave Exposure On The Epipsammic Diatoms Of The Lake Superior Wave Zone, Leon R. Katona Dec 2015

Impacts Of River Influence And Wave Exposure On The Epipsammic Diatoms Of The Lake Superior Wave Zone, Leon R. Katona

All NMU Master's Theses

Although little is known about primary productivity in wave zone habitats of very large lakes, it is presumably dominated by microalgae that attach to mineral substrates. Watershed energetics are linked with these wave zones through river mouth habitats, which provide nutrient and organismal input to lake systems. In this study, I assessed the abundance, productivity, and community composition of epipsammic diatoms in river mouth and beach habitats along the south-central coast of Lake Superior. Chlorophyll a concentrations were more than three-fold greater in river mouths (mean ± 1SE = 1.17 ± 0.45 mg/m2), than in wave zone (0.36 …

A Survey Of The Common Loon (Gavia Immer) Genome Reveals Patterns Of Natural Selection, Zach G. Gayk Dec 2015

A Survey Of The Common Loon (Gavia Immer) Genome Reveals Patterns Of Natural Selection, Zach G. Gayk

All NMU Master's Theses

With rapid advances in Next-Generation Sequencing technology, comparative genomics has become a viable method for studying the adaptation of species to their environment at the genome level. I investigated this in common loons (Gavia immer)—for which molecular adaptation has not been characterized—by finding signatures of positive selection as evidence for genomic adaptation.

I used Illumina short read sequencing data from a single female common loon to produce a fragmented assembly of the common loon (Gavia immer) genome. The resulting assembly had a contig N50 of 814 bp, a total length of 767,326,331 bp, and 45.7 % …

A Theory Of Genre Formation In The Twentieth Century, Michael Rodgers Dec 2015

A Theory Of Genre Formation In The Twentieth Century, Michael Rodgers

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In his article "A Theory of Genre Formation in the Twentieth Century" Michael Rodgers explores the relationship between Vladimir Nabokov's Invitation to a Beheading and magical realism in order to theorize about genre formation in the twentieth century. Rodgers argues not only that specific twentieth-century narrative forms are bound intrinsically with literary realism and socio-political conditions, but also that these factors can produce formal commonalities.

An Examination Of Psychological Climate Linking Mechanisms Across The Strategic Priorities Of Health And Stress, Alec Munc Dec 2015

An Examination Of Psychological Climate Linking Mechanisms Across The Strategic Priorities Of Health And Stress, Alec Munc

All Dissertations

Given that employee health and well-being represent a significant source of financial costs for organizations, this dissertation seeks to address some of the pathways through which organizational efforts to improve physical and mental health may operate. This study drew from a model of safety climate (Neal & Griffin, 2000) to propose that psychological climate exerts in influence on employee health and well-being through the joint moderators of knowledge/motivation and behaviors. The model also extended beyond the typical climate linking mechanisms to include moderators both individual (behavioral activation & behavioral inhibition systems) and contextual (workplace physical exposure). Using a two-wave prospective …

The Psychological And Post-Colonial Approaches In Interpreting The Self And The Other In Heart Of Darkness And Things Fall Apart., Soumaya Ferchichi Dec 2015

The Psychological And Post-Colonial Approaches In Interpreting The Self And The Other In Heart Of Darkness And Things Fall Apart., Soumaya Ferchichi

Theses (Pre-2016)

To some critics, Things FallApart by Chinua Achebe, first published in 1958, comes to be the antithesis of Heart ofDarkness by Joseph Conrad, first published in 1899. In fact, this thesis will highlight Achebe's enthusiasm and nationalism that lead him to create a vivid picture of the African individual who is presented as belonging to a rich heritage of unique and complex African tradition. Achebe's characterization and representation of Africans in his novel is thought to be an ardent response to Conrad's assumed or perceived "racism." Yet, this thesis will discuss this dispute by giving new evidence to support Conrad's …

Time Preferences Predict Mortality Among Hiv-Infected Adults Receiving Antiretroviral Therapy In Kenya, Harsha Thirumurthy, Kami Hayashi, Sebastian Linnemayr, Rachel C. Vreeman, Irwin P. Levin, David Bangsberg, Noel T. Brewer

OHSU-PSU School of Public Health Faculty Publications and Presentations

Identifying characteristics of HIV-infected adults likely to have poor treatment outcomes can be useful for targeting interventions efficiently. Research in economics and psychology suggests that individuals’ intertemporal time preferences, which indicate the extent to which they trade-off immediate vs. future cost and benefits, can influence various health behaviors. While there is empirical support for the association between time preferences and various non-HIV health behaviors and outcomes, the extent to which time preferences predict outcomes of those receiving antiretroviral therapy (ART) has not been examined previously.

HIV-infected adults initiating ART were enrolled at a health facility in Kenya. Participants’ time preferences …

Vicarious Trauma And Natural Disasters: A Transcendental Phenomenological Analysis Of The Experiences Of Families Of Typhoon Haiyan Survivors, Arvin Jeremy N. Tan, Andrew O. Jardeleza, Florian Antoinette P. Sta Maria, Mendiola Teng-Calleja Dec 2015

Vicarious Trauma And Natural Disasters: A Transcendental Phenomenological Analysis Of The Experiences Of Families Of Typhoon Haiyan Survivors, Arvin Jeremy N. Tan, Andrew O. Jardeleza, Florian Antoinette P. Sta Maria, Mendiola Teng-Calleja

Psychology Department Faculty Publications

Using transcendental phenomenology, we examined the experience of vicarious trauma in the context of natural disasters. We specifically looked at the narratives of domestic migrants whose family members were Typhoon Haiyan survivors. Findings show that the survivors’ families experienced painful and intrusive psychological distress. The gravity of the pain and loss experienced by the participants was relative to the amount of pain, loss, or damage sustained by the subject of their attachment. Vicarious trauma was experienced as a void-filling phenomenon occupying the emotional space created by the physical distance of the participants from their families experiencing the disaster. This phenomenon …

A Quantified Approach To The Functional Longevity Of Geosynthetic Rolled Erosion Control Products (Grecps), Drew A. Loizeaux Dec 2015

A Quantified Approach To The Functional Longevity Of Geosynthetic Rolled Erosion Control Products (Grecps), Drew A. Loizeaux

Masters Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

Geosynthetic Rolled Erosion Control Products (GRECPs) have been utilized for decades in a multitude of applications to mitigate erosion resulting from land disturbance in civil construction projects. GRECPs vary from one type to another, ranging in performance and design life due to their composition and intended purpose. The coverage and durability of the GRECP are fundamental properties that can predict performance and fitness for use. Both coverage and durability will degrade over the design life of the GRECP to the point that fitness for use is unacceptable for the intended application. A standard approach is needed to quantify this material …

Problem Solving And Tool Use In Three Species Of Otter, Robert F. Gormley Dec 2015

Problem Solving And Tool Use In Three Species Of Otter, Robert F. Gormley

Masters Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

Sea otters are well known tool users, yet the cognitive capacities of other otter species have been sparsely studied. Precedent exists for non-tool using species closely related to native tool users to display comparable abilities under experimental conditions. The social intelligence hypothesis predicts complex cognitive capacities in socially complex species. Using the Aesop’s Fable paradigm – wherein subjects drop stones into a cylinder half-filled with water to acquire floating out-of-reach food items – I assessed North American river otters’, Asian small-clawed otters, and giant river otters abilities to solve a novel tool-mediated problem. Sticks and water were presented with the …
