Global Warming And Population Responses Among Great Plains Birds, Paul A. Johnsgard Feb 2015

Global Warming And Population Responses Among Great Plains Birds, Paul A. Johnsgard

Zea E-Books Collection

Based on an analysis of 47 years (1967–2014) of Audubon Christmas Bird Counts (CBC), evidence for population changes and shifts in early winter (late December) ranges of nearly 150 species of birds in the Great Plains states is summarized, a region defined as including the Dakotas, Nebraska, Kansas, Oklahoma, and the Texas panhandle. The rationale for this study had its origins in Terry Root’s 1988 Atlas of North American Wintering Birds. Root’s landmark study provided a baseline for evaluating the nationwide winter distributions of 253 North American birds in the mid-20th century, using data from the National Audubon Society’s …

G-Quadruplex Dna Structures And Site Specific Genetic Instability, Jonathan David Williams Feb 2015

G-Quadruplex Dna Structures And Site Specific Genetic Instability, Jonathan David Williams

Theses and Dissertations

Repetitive DNA comprises a majority of the human genome yet functions and overall impacts on site-specific genetic instability are not fully defined. Repetitive G-rich sequences have the propensity to form G-quadruplex (G4), which are stable non-B form DNA structures. G4 structures are conspicuously found at regions of site-specific instability. Even so, human genomic loci capable of forming this structure and their connection to DNA rearrangements are just beginning to be elucidated. My dissertation focuses on G4 structures and their capacity to promote site-specific changes in the human genome, particularly at oncogenes. I identified and investigated new biologically relevant G4 loci …

An Epigenetic Map Of Age-Associated Autosomal Loci In Northern European Families At High Risk For The Metabolic Syndrome, Omar Ali, Diana Cerjak, Jack W. Kent, Roland James, John Blangero, Melanie A. Carless, Yi Zhang Feb 2015

An Epigenetic Map Of Age-Associated Autosomal Loci In Northern European Families At High Risk For The Metabolic Syndrome, Omar Ali, Diana Cerjak, Jack W. Kent, Roland James, John Blangero, Melanie A. Carless, Yi Zhang

School of Medicine Publications

Background: The prevalence of chronic diseases such as cancer, type 2 diabetes, metabolic syndrome (MetS), and cardiovascular disease increases with age in all populations. Epigenetic features are hypothesized to play important roles in the pathophysiology of age-associated diseases, but a map of these markers is lacking. We searched for genome-wide age-associated methylation signatures in peripheral blood of individuals at high risks for MetS by profiling 485,000 CpG sites in 192 individuals of Northern European ancestry using the Illumina HM450 array. Subjects (ages 6-85 years) were part of seven extended families, and 73% of adults and 32% of children were overweight …

Electromagnetically Inspired Approaches In Biomaterials And Drug Delivery, Stephen Kennedy Feb 2015

Electromagnetically Inspired Approaches In Biomaterials And Drug Delivery, Stephen Kennedy

Amgen Seminar Series in Chemical Engineering

The ability to spatially and temporally regulate the delivery of therapeutic biomolecules in vivo is pervasively desired in contemporary and emerging biotechnological and therapeutic contexts. That is, because biology varies greatly in space and time, the medical community requires biomaterials and biosystems that can communicate/direct biology with a high degree of spatial and temporal precision. The ability to regulate the timing, dose, and directionality of multiple biomolecules is particularly desirable in the realm of tissue engineering, where the engineering/repair of functional tissues requires a highly choreographed sequence of localized biomolecular presentations. Here, I will describe works in progress towards the …

Geosciences Faculty Publications

In the Zambales ophiolite range, terrestrial serpentinizing fluid seeps host diverse microbial assemblages. The fluids fall within the profile of Ca2+-OH−-type waters, indicative of active serpentinization, and are low in dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) (<0.5 ppm). Influx of atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) affects the solubility of calcium carbonate as distance from the source increases, triggering the formation of meter-scale travertine terraces. Samples were collected at the source and along the outflow channel to determine subsurface microbial community response to surface exposure. DNA was extracted and submitted for high-throughput 16S rRNA gene sequencing on the Illumina MiSeq platform. Taxonomic assignment of the …

Predicting Invasion Rates For Phragmites Australis, Rachel Nydegger, Jacob Duncan, James A. Powell Feb 2015

Predicting Invasion Rates For Phragmites Australis, Rachel Nydegger, Jacob Duncan, James A. Powell

Browse All Undergraduate research

In wetlands of Utah and southern Idaho as well as estuaries of the east coast, the ten-foot tall invasive grass Phragmites australis can be found near waterways, where it outcompetes native plants and degrades wildlife habitat. Phragmites australis is an obligate out-crossing plant that can spread sexually through seed disper- sal, or asexually via stolons and rhi- zomes (Kettenring and Mock 2012). Small patches are usually a single genetic individual, spreading vegetatively (and slowly) via runners; when patches become genetically diverse viable seeds are produced and invasion rates can be increase by an order of magnitude (Kettenring et al. 2011)

Making Teeth To Order: Conserved Genes Reveal An Ancient Molecular Pattern In Paddlefish (Actinopterygii), Moya M. Smith, Zerina Johanson, Thomas Butts, Rolf Ericsson, Melinda Modrell, Frank Tulenko, Marcus C. Davis, Gareth J. Fraser

Faculty Articles

Ray-finned fishes (Actinopterygii) are the dominant vertebrate group today (+30 000 species, predominantly teleosts), with great morphological diversity, including their dentitions. How dental morphological variation evolved is best addressed by considering a range of taxa across actinopterygian phylogeny; here we examine the dentition of Polyodon spathula (American paddlefish), assigned to the basal group Acipenseriformes. Although teeth are present and functional in young individuals of Polyodon, they are completely absent in adults. Our current understanding of developmental genes operating in the dentition is primarily restricted to teleosts; we show that shh and bmp4, as highly conserved epithelial and mesenchymal genes for …

Biology Faculty Articles

Morphological variation in natural populations is a genomic test bed for studying the interface between molecular evolution and population genetics, but some of the most interesting questions involve non-model organisms that lack well annotated reference genomes. Many felid species exhibit polymorphism for melanism but the relative roles played by genetic drift, natural selection, and interspecies hybridization remain uncertain. We identify mutations of Agouti signaling protein (ASIP) or the Melanocortin 1 receptor (MC1R) as independent causes of melanism in three closely related South American species: the pampas cat (Leopardus colocolo), the kodkod (Leopardus guigna), and Geoffroy’s cat …

Tumor Cell Targeting By Iron Oxide Nanoparticles Is Dominated By Different Factors In Vitro Versus In Vivo, Christian Ndong, Jennifer A. Tate, Warren C. Kett, Jaya Batra, Eugene Demidenko, Lionel D. Lewis, P. Jack Hoopes, Tillmann U. Gerngross, Karl E. Griswold

Dartmouth Scholarship

Realizing the full potential of iron oxide nanoparticles (IONP) for cancer diagnosis and therapy requires selective tumor cell accumulation. Here, we report a systematic analysis of two key determinants for IONP homing to human breast cancers: (i) particle size and (ii) active vs passive targeting. In vitro, molecular targeting to the HER2 receptor was the dominant factor driving cancer cell association. In contrast, size was found to be the key determinant of tumor accumulation in vivo, where molecular targeting increased tumor tissue concentrations for 30 nm but not 100 nm IONP. Similar to the in vitro results, PEGylation …
