Representations Of Us Acts Of Extra-Territoriality As Illustrated In Pakistani-English Political Cartoons, Aina S. Niaz
Representations Of Us Acts Of Extra-Territoriality As Illustrated In Pakistani-English Political Cartoons, Aina S. Niaz
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The significance of Pakistan as an international state cannot be downplayed. Not only is Pakistan the first Islamic state to develop its nuclear power, but Pakistan has served as an important geostrategic state to the US on several occasions. The US-Pakistan geopolitical relationship was most vividly highlighted during the final years of the Cold War; and has reemerged again in the Global War on Terror. This thesis will examine Pakistani-English political cartoons to examine the way US extra-territoriality is represented visually. Approximately 2940 political cartoons are collected from four Pakistani-English newspapers: Dawn, The Express Tribune, The Nation, …

In today’s society, the most common way for people to search for job opportunities is by using the internet on their personal electronic device, whether it be a laptop, desktop, tablet, or mobile phone. There are hundreds of websites and mobile applications catering to all kinds of career services in a plethora of fields. One specific sector of employment that is rather unique is the creative field. Creative positions are posted on their own websites like Behance, AIGA, Coroflot, etc. Since these niche websites exist, there are also hundreds of articles discussing how creative individuals approach the job searching process. …
Scalable Multi-Hop Data Dissemination In Vehicular Ad Hoc Networks, Moumena Abdullah Chaqfeh
Scalable Multi-Hop Data Dissemination In Vehicular Ad Hoc Networks, Moumena Abdullah Chaqfeh
Dissertations
Vehicular Ad hoc Networks (VANETs) aim at improving road safety and travel comfort, by providing self-organizing environments to disseminate traffic data, without requiring fixed infrastructure or centralized administration. Since traffic data is of public interest and usually benefit a group of users rather than a specific individual, it is more appropriate to rely on broadcasting for data dissemination in VANETs. However, broadcasting under dense networks suffers from high percentage of data redundancy that wastes the limited radio channel bandwidth. Moreover, packet collisions may lead to the broadcast storm problem when large number of vehicles in the same vicinity rebroadcast nearly …
Motion Sequence Teaser For A Trilogy By Satyajit Ray, Ashoomi Dholakia
Motion Sequence Teaser For A Trilogy By Satyajit Ray, Ashoomi Dholakia
Theses
Art is omnipresent, and the exclusivity in any form of art comes from our surrounding and the environment that we surround ourselves with. This thesis attempts to investigate the characteristic work of an Indian director, Satyajit Ray (1921-1992) from a modern point of view and bring back his work that has been forgotten with time. Satyajit Ray introduced the Neorealism movement 1 to Indian cinema, and came to be known for his artistic style which offered a certain sense of universality to the expression depicted. The honest portrayals in his work resonated with the international audience for the first time …
The Shape Of Poetry: A Typographic Exploration Of Poetry And Synesthesia, Boliang Chen
The Shape Of Poetry: A Typographic Exploration Of Poetry And Synesthesia, Boliang Chen
Theses
The Shape of Poetry is a thesis which explores the relationships of synesthesia, typography and poetry.
Synesthesia is a neurologically-based condition in which stimulation of one sensory or cognitive pathway leads to automatic, involuntary experiences in a second sensory or cognitive pathway. This phenomenon is common in poetry as a rhetorical device. In graphic design, we uses typography and other visual elements to make cross-sensory metaphors as well. The similarity among these three provides a new field of research possibilities.
The goal of the thesis is to visualize poetry by exploring typographic variations and implementing synesthesia findings. The final result …

Digital Storytelling: Do Multimodal Choices Influence Audience Persuasion?, Caitlin E. White
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
This study examined how effective a personal narrative digital story is in terms of persuasion through the use of an experiment involving two digital stories. The human communication theory of narrative paradigm and research on the field of digital storytelling were used to provide rationale for the study's hypotheses. The study explored how effective and persuasive multimedia digital stories are compared to the script of the digital stories. Results of the research were insignificant and did not support the hypotheses, as the sample did not find the multimedia stories more effective and persuasive than the scripts of the digital stories.

Well-being is an important factor for a person's physical and psychological health. Modern people spend most of their time in indoor environment, and built environment impact physical and psychological well-being of people. However, most of the current research about occupants' well-being is focused on the working or residential environment, not on schools. In fact, educational environment's facilities would lead to satisfaction, therefore, various type of facilities such as educational building are the essential components of quality of college life. ^ With increasing interest in and awareness of environmental protection, green or sustainable building has become an important topic. "Green" or …

Comics And Composition, Comics As Composition: Navigating Production And Consumption, Tammie M. Kennedy, Jessi Thomsen, Erica Trabold
English Faculty Publications
Composition has a vested interest in exploring how comics studies can inform our teaching of writing, multimodal literacies, and visual rhetoric. Composition and rhetoric has already demonstrated a growing interest in comics (including graphic literatures, graphic novels, graphic narratives, digital storytelling) as complex sites of literacy and as spaces to theorize and practice multimodal composing. Comics also provide opportunities to explore the rhetorical choices and transactions that must be negotiated between composers and readers. However, despite composition scholars’ interest in multiliteracies, multimodal composing, and visual rhetoric, the interdependent and fluid connections between images and words remain largely disengaged. For example, …

Visual Analytics For Large Communication Trace Data, Jieting Wu
Visual Analytics For Large Communication Trace Data, Jieting Wu
School of Computing: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Executions of modern parallel programs often yield complex communications among compute nodes of large-scale clusters of workstations or supercomputers. Analyzing communication patterns is becoming increasingly critical to performance optimiza- tion. As the scale and complexity of parallel applications drastically increases, visu- alization has become a feasible means to conduct analysis of massive communication patterns. However, most visualization tools fall short in showing comprehensive dy- namic communication graph and addressing the scalability issue. Our solution for analyzing dynamic communication patterns is based on an analytics framework cou- pled with a new visualization technique, named CommGram [29], that provides a flexible solution …

Science Based Education For Students Who Are Deaf And/Or Hard Of Hearing, Francine Patalano
Science Based Education For Students Who Are Deaf And/Or Hard Of Hearing, Francine Patalano
Graduate Theses & Dissertations
Research studies have shown that if science is taught through inquiry using both hands-on and minds-on instruction, the theory of science-based learning would be the best method to teach students with disabilities (Luckner & Carter, 2001). In the field of Deaf education, it is well known that for a majority of students who are Deaf and/or Hard of Hearing (D/HH), American Sign Language (ASL) is their primary language with its own syntax and grammar. The English language is, in actuality, a Deaf student’s second language. With this in mind, students who are Deaf are functionally English-language learners (ELLs) or limited …
