Living Dragons: Illustrating Vfx Character Creation Techniques, Karen Vandivert
Living Dragons: Illustrating Vfx Character Creation Techniques, Karen Vandivert
Theses
Living Dragons is a 3D character design Master’s thesis project in which four visual special effects technologies (puppetry, stop motion, CGI, and motion capture) are represented with four different characters intended to represent the archetypes of those technologies. The goal is to foster curiosity in these topics and encourage its audience to explore their new interests further. The project itself is meant to be casual and fun, an inviting place to begin learning about a new topic. This project is also meant to explore how character design can be used to convey how technology works, and to utilize that design …
Suggestion, Perception, Reality: A Study Into The Relationship Between Suggestion And The Reality It May Produce, Perception, Reality: A Study Into The Relationship Between Suggestion And The Reality It May Produce., Scott Whippo
Communication & Leadership Dissertations and Theses
Suggestion is a part of communication that cannot be stripped from or be considered separate from verbal and nonverbal communication. It is through the need to view the communication processes from a complete understanding that this study investigated the possible influence that suggestion may have on an individual’s perception of reality. The existing literature was reviewed with various results from different researchers, however, much of the literature supported previous research done by Spanos et al. (1984) and Bartels et al. (2006). Their research showed some indications that suggestion, and possibly priming may have an influence on an individual’s perception. Using …

Time Out: Influence Of User Experience Design On Behavior To Reduce Smartphone Use, Tejal Sampat
Theses
We are more connected than we used to be but people are becoming disengaged from the real world. Are smartphones a blessing or a bane? That depends on how we use it. Being hooked to a smartphone while interacting with family or friends is a definite no-no.
To address the issue of being neglected in social situations, timeOut allows neglected users to send anonymous timeouts to obsessive smartphone users who are preoccupied with their smartphones and are in close proximity to neglected users. The timeOut app allows neglected users to express their feelings without upsetting or embarrassing anyone. The application …
Fixed And Fleeting: An Exploration Of Film Poster Art From Weimar Germany, 1919-1933, Melissa Lee Olson Meeks
Fixed And Fleeting: An Exploration Of Film Poster Art From Weimar Germany, 1919-1933, Melissa Lee Olson Meeks
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
My research investigates film advertising and poster designs produced in Germany during the Weimar Republic as significant cultural artifacts revealing the intersections between consumerism and aesthetics, popular entertainment and fine art. The intent of my dissertation is two-fold. On the one hand, I reconsider the intellectual debates surrounding the artistic legitimacy of film as argued in the so-called Kinodebatte of the early twentieth century, an unsettling of the perceived boundaries between high and low art that remains significant to theorizations and explications of cinema today. On the other hand, my examination of the film poster aims to complicate the theoretical …
Data-Ink Ratio And Task Complexity In Graph Comprehension, Kevin Mcgurgan
Data-Ink Ratio And Task Complexity In Graph Comprehension, Kevin Mcgurgan
Theses
Human processing of graphical information is a topic which has wide-reaching implications for decision-making in a variety of contexts. A deeper understanding of the processes of graphical perception can lead to the development of design guidelines which can enhance performance in graphical perception tasks. This study evaluates the data-ink ratio guideline, which recommends the removal of non-data graph elements, resulting in minimalist graph designs. In an experiment, participants answered graph comprehension questions using bar graphs and boxplots with varying data-ink ratios. Participants answered questions with similar levels of accuracy and mental effort. Some participants drew on graphs, reducing the data-ink …
X10 Comics: Reimagining The Sequential Narrative, Sten E. Mckinzie
X10 Comics: Reimagining The Sequential Narrative, Sten E. Mckinzie
Theses
At its core a comic book is a narrative told using a sequence of images or a sequential art narrative. There are a number of conventions, established early in the history of comics, which make the comic panel format a powerful tool for visual communication.
My thesis project examines these conventions and attempt to distinguish which ones are results of the unique nature of sequential art and which began as a byproduct of technological limitations. By doing so my goal is to take advantage of current technology by creating a new comic book format that integrates digital media while celebrating …
The Connex: A New User-Interface Design For The Contacts Of A Mobile Phone, Chelsea Lessnick
The Connex: A New User-Interface Design For The Contacts Of A Mobile Phone, Chelsea Lessnick
Theses
Many social media websites including MySpace, AniRoleplay, and Tumblr
give users the opportunity to express their personality by customizing the
profile. The contact list of an Apple iPhone currently does not allow users
to customize features. This project created a new user-interface design for
the contact list of an Apple iPhone which draws inspiration from the
Pokédex used in the popular Pokémon franchise. By rebranding this
fictional device so the core functionality translates into the real world in a
practical and original way, users can bring their personality and creative
expression to other devices outside the internet.
Many key components …

Place, Space, And Family: A Rhetorical Analysis Of The Resistance Rhetoric Of Judy Bonds, Alex K. Davenport
Place, Space, And Family: A Rhetorical Analysis Of The Resistance Rhetoric Of Judy Bonds, Alex K. Davenport
Masters Theses, 2010-2019
This thesis examines the ways that rhetorics of resistance can operate in contemporary social conditions. I do this specifically by examining the rhetoric of Judy Bonds, an environmental justice activist who opposed mountaintop removal (MTR) mining in Appalachia. I utilize a qualitative rhetorical approach to examine 34 instances of Bonds’ discourse as well as my own autoethnographic reflections focused on my work with Mountain Justice, a regional anti-MTR activist organization. Pairing the constant comparative method with principles of ideological criticism, informed by theories of place, voice, memory, and narrative, forms this qualitative rhetorical approach. The postmodern turn allows for the …

Visual Narratives And Metaphors As Tools For Teaching In The Foreign Language Classroom: A Sociocultural And Critical Perspective, Mónica Alexandra Durán
Open Access Dissertations
This dissertation studies the teaching of visual and metaphorical representations as thinking tools in second language (L2) classrooms from a Sociocultural Theory (SCT) framework. It explores metaphorical representations in narrative and visual texts to advance the practice of appropriating new language abilities to produce a new text that is contextualized and meaningful to learners of Spanish as a Second Language. By providing L2 Learners early in the process with accessible conceptual and representational tools, they may gain a personally significant awareness of the richness of language and of the power of their communicative abilities beyond everyday interactions. Creative writing and …

Gifted Secondary School Students: The Perceived Relationship Between Enrichment And Achievement Orientation, Carla B. Brigandi
Doctoral Dissertations
Gifted and talented students have special needs that require interventions, such as academic acceleration and academic enrichment. Additionally, without appropriate modifications gifted and talented students are at risk of underachievement. Grounded in the Schoolwide Enrichment Model and the Achievement Orientation Model, the purpose of this qualitative case study was to build understanding of the relationship between participation in academic enrichment, achievement attitudes, and the resultant behavior (self-regulation) of gifted secondary school students. Achievement attitudes include self-efficacy, goal valuation, and environmental perceptions. Participants included 10 students enrolled in one distinctive enrichment program, their parents, and their classroom teacher. The enrichment program …

Contentious Spaces : A Comparative Analysis Of Latin American Resistance Campaigns, 1956-2006., Sean Lee Welch
Contentious Spaces : A Comparative Analysis Of Latin American Resistance Campaigns, 1956-2006., Sean Lee Welch
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Why do resistance campaigns have different outcomes? Specifically, why do some resistance campaigns succeed, while others fail or fall somewhere between success and failure? Examining Latin American resistance campaigns between 1956 and 2006 through a theoretical lens of spatial agency, the varying outcomes of resistance campaigns (success, partial success, and failure) could be explained schematically by the same conditions. Generally, successful campaigns had the same conditions present, which include: facing an authoritarian regime; the ability of the campaign to build cross-class alliances that included urban elements; military shifts through defection, desertion, or open rebellion; the United States’ withdrawal of support …

Painting Versus Photography In The Romance Of A Shop And Capturing The New Woman Through A Mechanical Lens, Sarah Michelle Naciuk
Painting Versus Photography In The Romance Of A Shop And Capturing The New Woman Through A Mechanical Lens, Sarah Michelle Naciuk
All Theses
Majority of Amy Levy's scholarship is predominantly focused on her Jewish identity and its relationship to her novel Ruben Sachs. Importantly, very little scholarship has been done on her novel The Romance of a Shop. Both Elizabeth Evans and Michael Kramp have discussed Levy's desire to create a place for professional women in the urban landscape. However, neither of these scholars have critically analyzed the New Woman and its connection to photography and painting, only briefly glancing at Lady Watergate's Post-mortem photograph. By ignoring this scene and the New Woman's connection to photography, they have missed the opportunity to see …

In A Pickle: A Marketing Analysis Of Images And Textual Descriptions On Food Packages And How They Influence College Students' Grocery Purchases, Lauren Doyle
HIM 1990-2015
The reason for confusion in grocery stores is the fact that many of the same types of food products are being marketed with different labels. Many packaging labels contain keywords such as “organic,” “farm fresh,” and “all natural.” Some products incorporate the use of images such as a picturesque farm or a “happy” cow. Using data collected from the surveys of 349 college students, this study examines student choices of food products based on organic and non-organic and brand and generic foods. Variables also examined include sex, health, and living arrangements. The results of this study can help provide an …

Poultry Production Messaging: A Content Analysis Of Three National Newspapers From 1994 To 2014, Stuart Estes
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Consumers are increasingly concerned with the use of antibiotics and hormones in poultry production, and the news media is the primary way consumers gain knowledge about this subject. This study assessed articles about antibiotic and hormone use in poultry production from the New York Times, USA Today, and the Wall Street Journal from 1994 to 2014. This study employed a content analysis methodology to assess selected articles (n = 139) for key messaging about antibiotic and hormone use in poultry production, article tone, article framing, and article journalistic quality. Data gathered from key messages were assessed for emergent themes that …

Early Hearing Detection And Intervention Conferences: Cultural And Pathological Messages, Kathryn Byrne
All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023
Babies who are born with hearing loss have historically missed out on early language acquisition opportunities due to delayed diagnosis. Over 95% of deaf children are born to hearing families who would have no reason to suspect a hearing loss until typical language development is not evidenced (Marschark, 2010). Unfortunately, a dearth of language acquisition in early childhood has damaging affects on any subsequent language learning as well as social and emotional development. By waiting until children are of an age to evidence this lack of language, their overall language capability is already impeded, and the consequences of this delay …

Reimagining The Rhetorical Canons For Professional Communication Pedagogy, Jocelin A. Gibson
All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023
One of the most significant challenges for professional communication educators is identifying and providing the skills students need to succeed in their careers. The rapidly evolving professional landscape complicates this identification; the skills a college student needs when she enters the program could be dramatically different from what she needs when she graduates. A crucial change in the past decade is the shift from a largely solo composing environment to one featuring distributed work, in which professional communicators “find themselves becoming "dividuals" – one part writer, one part project manager, one part programmer, one part student”; this has them involved …
