Applying The User-Centered Design Method To A Perinatal Depression Website Design, Jiaying Li Apr 2015

Applying The User-Centered Design Method To A Perinatal Depression Website Design, Jiaying Li

Theses

The Internet has become the most useful channel for people to access information. Many websites have very useful or comprehensive content. However, some users are not willing to read them, because they feel overwhelmed by reading text-based websites. User-experience design plays a crucial part in building a bridge between users and the website. With a good design, websites make the user experience more enjoyable. This thesis is about applying the user-centered design method (UCD) to websites about perinatal depression.

Discovering Galapagos: A Children’S Website, Jing Yan Mar 2015

Discovering Galapagos: A Children’S Website, Jing Yan

Theses

Information technology is changing people's lives. It changes the way people communicate with others, how people search for information, and how people study and learn new knowledge. According to several studies and reports, more and more parents are using computers and mobile devices to teach their children. However, with the exception of games, there are only a few fun educational websites are created for children.

As a designer and young mother who wants to find good educational resources for children, I think this would be a good opportunity for me to design a website for our tiny thinkers. Because children …

Visual Communications and Technology Education Faculty Publications

Faculty must juggle competing demands of scholarship, teaching, and service. Maintaining work-‐life balance requires effective use of limited time. A BGSU faculty learning community formed to identify and explore efficiency practices, while developing accountability for implementing them. During this interactive roundtable, we will share experiences and tips: batching email and removing notifications, developing hyper-‐ detailed calendars, protecting writing time, capturing “useless” downtime, assessing tasks based on importance and urgency, creating a social support system, and learning when and how to say no. An important lesson is that time management tools are not “one-‐size-‐fits-‐all,” and particular techniques resonate more with individual …

Finding Place: Chaos, Control, & I, Brandi Rackers Mar 2015

Finding Place: Chaos, Control, & I, Brandi Rackers

Theses

This thesis and accompanying exhibition seeks to investigate through visualization the role of individual units within a system through personal association with those individual units. The art forms in the exhibition are artifacts of the pseudo-scientific process that I have developed. Through scientific research and interpretations of personal experiences, the process seeks to explore system construction, functionality and degree of success regarding each. The role of the individual unit within systems and the manner in which it exercises a potent influence is elucidated. As a consequence, the exhibition provides self-reflective information and an environment for viewers to consider the effects …

Does Learning About Climate Change Adaptation Change Support For Mitigation?, Michael P. Vandenbergh, Heather Barnes Truelove, Amanda R. Carrico, David Dana

Vanderbilt Law School Faculty Publications

Many have speculated that increased attention to climate change adaptation will reduce support for mitigation. The Risk Compensation Hypothesis suggests that remedies to reduce the impacts of risky behaviors can unintentionally increase those behaviors. The Risk Salience Hypothesis suggests that information about adaptation may increase the salience of impacts, and therefore increase mitigation support. Experiment 1 presented participants with a news article about an irrigation technology described as a way to improve efficiency (Pure Control), reduce emissions (Mitigation Control), or reduce drought vulnerability (Adaptation). Political moderates in the adaptation condition rated climate change as a higher political priority and were …

Number 3 - Mainstreaming Gender In Mediation Practice, Adeyinka Bruce Omotunde

Peace and Conflict Management Working Papers Series

Cultural difference associated with being male or female can be rich and interesting, and can generate excitement that continually change the nature of human relations. In this respect, African culture is dynamic in the exploration of gender difference/similarities, roles, and stereotypes. The dynamism can be a source of great confusion and conflict. In general, gender debates on the extent to which men and women are similar/different cut across cultures and the conversation is on-going. Similarly, research is strong on the differences between men and women as third party interveners, and how disputants are different on gender styles and standards of …

The Visualization And Representation Of Gender In Egyptian Comics, What Is The Fuss All About?, Sara Hany Shaker Rizkallah Feb 2015

The Visualization And Representation Of Gender In Egyptian Comics, What Is The Fuss All About?, Sara Hany Shaker Rizkallah

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis investigates gender visualization in Egyptian comics published in 2011 and afterwards, focusing on three main themes: the veil, violence against women, and the role played by women during post-revolutionary Egypt. The three main comics utilized in this study are: TokTok magazine, Al-Shakmgia, and Qahera. The main purpose of the study is to examine whether these three comics re-inscribe or challenge the stereotyped gender representation of women in the previously mentioned themes. By examining these three comics, this thesis argues that the binary conception of gender is no longer based on stereotypes of men and women, of masculinity and …

The Edgy Relationship Between Sports Media And Sports Organizations In Egypt: The Urgency For An Effective Media Policy, Inas Mohamed Ali Mazhar

Theses and Dissertations

This study delves into the edgy and often tense relationship between sports organizations and sports media in Egypt. The study confirms how this relationship, which is usually known as being "symbiotic", based on mutual benefits, has now become a burden on the two sides in their day-to-day working relationship. The study is based on qualitative research with data collected through in-depth interviews. A purposive sample of journalists and members of sports organizations were selected to discuss the reasons behind the broken symbiotic ties which led to the relationship being at stake. The study also aims at finding solutions and recommendations …
