A New Model To Explore Non-Profit Social Media Use For Advocacy And Civic Engagement, David Chapman, Katrina Miller-Stevens, John C. Morris, Brendan O'Hallarn

School of Public Service Faculty Publications

Non-profit organizations are actively using social media platforms as a way to deliver information to end users, yet little is known of the internal processes these organizations follow to implement this tool. We present a case study of one non-profit organization, Blue Star Families, Inc., that is actively engaged in advocacy and civic engagement. We offer a new model to explore non-profit organizations' use of social media platforms by building on previous models and frameworks developed to explore the use of social media in the public, private, and non-profit sectors.

Scholarly Thrusts In The Journal Of Sport Management: Citation Analysis, Amy Chan Hyung Kim, Packianathan Chelladurai, Yu Kyoum Kim

Global Sport Business Journal

To provide objective evidence for continued discussion of the body of knowledge in the field of sport management, this study reconstructed the knowledge structure through bibliometric analysis of the Journal of Sport Management (JSM) articles between 1997 and 2012. To be specific, this study employed citation analyses of articles published in the JSM to disclose the central themes, concepts, and methodologies. The results revealed that while the quantitative methods were prevalent during the entire period, structural equation modeling and qualitative methods emerged as new investigative methods in the later period (2004-2012). Content wise, articles in sport marketing were more cited …

Why are some teams perennial darlings of sports journalists while other talented squads get overlooked? Each week during the NCAA basketball season, the Associated Press releases a ranked poll of the top 25 teams. By comparing the preseason and postseason rankings, we construct a measure of how much sports journalists who respond to the poll overrate (or underrate) college teams relative to their actual performance. Using this metric for the 115 NCAA schools that have appeared at least once in the opening or final AP poll in the last 25 years, we examine a range of institutional characteristics that may …

We surveyed over 300 graduate students at a Southeastern research university to increase our understanding of their perceptions of (a) the connection between teaching and research, (b) the means by which integration occurs, and (c) the extent to which teaching and research contribute to a shared skill set that is of value in both contexts. We also examined differences across disciplines in the perception of this teaching-research nexus. Overall, findings indicate that graduate students perceive important relationships between teaching and research, and they point toward opportunities for administrators to promote teaching and research integration.

The ages of these participants ranged from between 18 and 22 years old, 1 and 3 years of attendance at the University, and consisted of 5 females and 2 males. Nothing For Money And Your Work For Free: Internships And The Marketing Of Higher Education, Mara Einstein Jan 2015

Nothing For Money And Your Work For Free: Internships And The Marketing Of Higher Education, Mara Einstein

Publications and Research

American universities have significantly increased their marketing expenditures over the last decade. The high cost of education, reductions in government funding, and precipitous declines in the traditional college-aged population (18-21 year olds) are some of the key factors forcing universities to be more aggressive with the promotional techniques they use to attract prospective students. In this competitive marketplace, schools promote the attributes they believe will be most compelling to high schoolers and their parents, including academics, sports, campus life, and careers. Tied into this last factor is the promotion of internship opportunities. While some of these hands-on experiences lead to …

Athletic Compensation For Women Too? Title Ix Implications Of Northwestern And O'Bannon, Erin E. Buzuvis Jan 2015

Athletic Compensation For Women Too? Title Ix Implications Of Northwestern And O'Bannon, Erin E. Buzuvis

Faculty Scholarship

The NCAA has been relying on Title IX requirements to defend its polices prohibiting compensation for college athletics; it argues that paying athletes in revenue sports, coupled with the commensurate obligation under Title IX to pay female athletes, would be prohibitively expensive.

As a response to the NCAA’s argument, the Author seeks to advance two positions: first, that Title IX would, as argued by the NCAA, require payment of female athletes using some measure of equality; and second, that it is not Title IX that renders the prospect of athlete compensation cost prohibitive, but rather, the fact that college athletics …

Antecedents Of Job Satisfaction And Organizational Citizenship Behaviors Among Agency-Hired Blue-Collar Contractual Workers In The Philippines, Merilou G. Lomoya, May B. Pingol, Mendiola Teng-Calleja

Psychology Department Faculty Publications

The employment of contractual workers in the country has been an ever growing reality as companies continue to achieve flexibilization and cost efficiency. Despite their increasing number, research that focuses on contractual workers’ attitudes and behaviors as well as the factors that elicit these remains little. This quantitative study examined job characteristics, rewards and recognition, and training and development as predictors of job satisfaction and organizational citizenship behaviors (OCBs) among 159 agency-hired blue-collar contractual workers within Metro Manila. Although the identified antecedent variables were found to be correlated with both job satisfaction and OCBs, only job characteristics and training and …

The second purpose was to explore the relationship between participants’ basic psychological need satisfaction and the type of motivation the participant felt toward the golf league. Together, information obtained from this study provides golf associations and golf directors in Canada valuable information that could aid in designing golf leagues, which both attract and retain members. Increased participation can help to provide consistent financial gains for the golf clubs, …

U.S. Collegiate Athletics: International Student Athletes Recruiting Process, Evelyn S. Jara Jan 2015

U.S. Collegiate Athletics: International Student Athletes Recruiting Process, Evelyn S. Jara

Theses and Dissertations

The pressure to win has grown as a result of the billions of dollars invested in collegiate athletics and the increasing national media attention, and coaches and administrators are searching for an athletic edge (Wieberg, 2008). There are a limited number of American athletes that have the skills to impact the collegiate level. Competition to attract the top domestic players is high, so coaches turn to larger, international recruiting arenas with less competition (Riley, 1997). The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) regulates collegiate Sports in the United States, which is the only place in the world that provides the opportunity …
