Preparation And Support Of Female Head Athletic Trainers In Collegiate Sport, Bekki Turner
Preparation And Support Of Female Head Athletic Trainers In Collegiate Sport, Bekki Turner
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Title IX of the U.S. Education Amendments of 1972 has significantly improved women's access to previously male-dominated areas of education in the United States, but few of these studies have focused on the experiences of women currently in the higher education field. This study explored female head athletic trainers' perceptions of the role of U.S. higher education institutions in preparing and supporting their achievement of leadership positions in U.S. collegiate sports: it also explored their views on potential changes in current higher education curricula and certification processes. This phenomenological study used Ridgeway's status construction theory as its theoretical lens for …

Transitioning to adulthood is a challenging experience for all young adults, but especially for those who are living with HIV/AIDS and residing in low income, urban areas. Young adults, particularly those who live in low income, urban areas, have the highest rate of new HIV cases among all age groups in the United States. The purpose of this study was to examine the lived experiences of a purposive sample of young adults living with HIV/AIDS who resided in a selected low income, urban area in order to better understand how ecological and health factors presented opportunities and challenges for resilience …
Fostering Creativity Skills In Online Mba Programs: Perceptions Of Mba Alumni, Mark D. Orlando
Fostering Creativity Skills In Online Mba Programs: Perceptions Of Mba Alumni, Mark D. Orlando
Theses and Dissertations
With companies seeking to increase organizational efficiency while promoting prosperous growth, creativity has become one of the most important leadership qualities sought after by employers. This has put a demand on Masters of Business Administration (MBA) graduates to possess creative skills, as well as a dependency for MBA students to acquire a quality MBA education. Although business education has entered into new domains of online learning, the criticism remains that business education does little to foster or strengthen students' creativity skills. Thus, with the evolution of online education arises a need to research the effectiveness of creativity within these new …

Revenue Sharing And Within-Team Payroll Inequality In Major League Baseball, Nicholas A. Jolly
Revenue Sharing And Within-Team Payroll Inequality In Major League Baseball, Nicholas A. Jolly
Economics Faculty Research and Publications
Using data from the 2000 to 2012 Major League Baseball seasons, this article investigates how changes to revenue sharing in the 2007 collective bargaining agreement altered within-team payroll inequality. Results indicate that inequality within teams decreased after the 2007 bargaining agreement. This reduced inequity is concentrated among those teams that were already experiencing relatively higher levels of inequality. This indicates that changes to revenue sharing should help increase competitive balance within the league. Additionally, the reduction in inequality occurs only among hitters and not pitchers. These results highlight how collective bargaining can have heterogeneous effects on groups of workers despite …
Barriers To Leadership In Women's College Athletics, Erin E. Buzuvis
Barriers To Leadership In Women's College Athletics, Erin E. Buzuvis
Faculty Scholarship
Today there is an enormous gender disparity among collegiate head coaches and athletic administrators in the United States. Women fill less than a quarter of head coach and athletic director positions in college athletics and are even minorities among coaches of women's teams. Few other professions are as impervious to gender integration. Leadership in college athletics is, in the words of one scholar, one of the "few male bastions remaining," which raises the question: Why are women so starkly underrepresented in leadership positions within college athletics? There is no easy answer, but rather a variety of factors that exclude, deter, …
Tapping Into The Social Capital Of African American Alumni Of Urban High Schools, Adrian Derrick Johnson
Tapping Into The Social Capital Of African American Alumni Of Urban High Schools, Adrian Derrick Johnson
UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to identify and understand how African American alumni of urban high schools perceived that they could best contribute to their former schools. Despite numerous improvement efforts for several decades, the academic performance of urban high school students has failed to keep pace with that of their suburban counterparts. This research was framed around the premise that the rich legacies and diverse cultural experiences of African American alumni of urban high schools could mitigate the outside factors that negatively impact student performance at urban schools. These funds of knowledge, as Moll and Amanti (2005) described …
Role Tension In The Academy: A Philosophical Inquiry Into Faculty Teaching And Research, Nicolas Michaud
Role Tension In The Academy: A Philosophical Inquiry Into Faculty Teaching And Research, Nicolas Michaud
UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation seeks to understand the conjunction of faculty roles as teachers and as researchers. This understanding is pursued through philosophical analysis. Discourse ethics, in particular, is used as a framework by which to best understand the roles played by faculty and if the roles of teacher and researcher are, in fact, commensurable. The purpose of the work is two-fold: 1) to develop a construct that may be used by future researchers to better understand the roles played by faculty, and 2) to suggest a best-construct that enables future researchers to propose how actual lived roles should be instantiated in …

Adaptation Of An Adolescent Coping Assessment For Therapeutic Recreation And Outdoor Adventure Settings, Melissa S. Russell, Mark A. Widmer, Neil Lundberg, Peter Ward
Faculty Publications
This study addresses the need for sound assessments to measure adolescent coping in therapeutic recreation, wilderness and adventure therapy settings. Although consideration was given to developing a new measure, a well-developed general coping measure exists, and the authors indicated a need to adapt it to specific settings. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to adapt the Response to Stress Questionnaire (RSQ) for use in adventure-based therapeutic settings. Appropriate content was identified and items were adapted to create RSQ Outdoor Adventure Version (RSQ-OAV). These items were then evaluated for representativeness and relevance to provide content validity. An expert panel conducted …

Background: Motor speech disorders, such as dysarthria, are a common sequelae reported after traumatic brain injuries. However, there is limited research on the effects of sport-related concussions (SRC) on motor speech disorders.
Aims: The current study aimed at replicating and extending a previous research study, Dolan (2013), conducted at the University of Texas at El Paso. In her study, Dolan (2013) incorporated and evaluated motor speech tasks: sequential motion rates, and motor limb tasks: movement execution initiation and finger repetition, in athletes following a sport-related concussion. The current study duplicates Dolanâ??s (2013) study. In addition, it investigates the effects of …
The Influence Of Warmth And Competence Perceptions On Employees’ Attitudinal And Behavioral Responses In Casual Dining Restaurants, Diego Riva Humbert Bufquin
The Influence Of Warmth And Competence Perceptions On Employees’ Attitudinal And Behavioral Responses In Casual Dining Restaurants, Diego Riva Humbert Bufquin
Theses and Dissertations
Employees in the hospitality industry continuously judge their peers and leaders in order to evaluate their work environment. Group and individual evaluations are systematic, as the restaurant industry is characterized by high labor intensiveness that typically involves substantial social interactions and task interdependence. As a consequence, employees come up with quick and broad conclusions about the characteristics of the people that they work with or for.
Along these lines, two of the most significant constructs that govern the social perceptions or evaluations of individuals and groups are people’s perceived warmth and competence. The warmth construct informs people whether a person …

Conceptualizing Structured Experiences: Seeking Interdisciplinary Integration, Mat D. Duerden, Peter Ward, Patti A. Freeman
Conceptualizing Structured Experiences: Seeking Interdisciplinary Integration, Mat D. Duerden, Peter Ward, Patti A. Freeman
Faculty Publications
While consensus exists around the importance of providing structured experiences, the industries interested in offering such experiences lack a common body of shared knowledge about how most effectively to do so. Potentially complementary research on structured experiences remains fragmented across multiple fields such as leisure, tourism, and marketing. The purpose of this paper, therefore, was first to review and then integrate this scattered literature into a structured experience framework in order to facilitate experience-related research with broader applicability for both commercial and public organizations interested in providing structured experiences.

it. Though research has grown greatly on this topic, there is a gap related to gender and fantasy sport. To further explore the dynamics of gender and fantasy sport, this study examined insights of women as to their perceptions of the overall fantasy sport experience, as well as the reasons why fantasy sport is an activity that is primarily consumed by men. Data was collected utilizing qualitative open-ended questions. Major themes emerged indicating that women perceive the overall experience to be (a) too time consuming, (b) an old boys club, (c) too much work looking up statistics, (d) potentially fun. …
Entrepreneurship And Competitive Dog Sports, Brenda A. Riemer, Erica J. Zonder, Jeanne L. Thomas
Entrepreneurship And Competitive Dog Sports, Brenda A. Riemer, Erica J. Zonder, Jeanne L. Thomas
Global Sport Business Journal
Entrepreneurs are inherently innovative, in that they shape their business -- and perhaps even create a market niche (Kumar, 2007). The present study explored motivations of women entrepreneurs in a specific arena -- competitive dog sports – in the context of the economic recession in the United States in the early 21st century. Eight entrepreneurs were interviewed for the study. Five themes emerged from the interview transcripts: “Entrepreneur as participant”, “entrepreneur as a secondary income”, “deliberation versus plunge”, “entrepreneurship and family”, and “growth and maintenance in a recession”. The participants also indicated that for them to be successful entrepreneurs, they …

Measuring The Connection Between College Basketball Fans And League Sponsors, Nels Popp, Chad Mcevoy, Liz Sattler
Global Sport Business Journal
Sponsors of NCAA Division I conferences often have limited access to activation opportunities within members’ sports venues, limiting their reach to team fans. One purpose of this study was to determine if recognition rates of conference sponsors differ between sporting events held at campus sites and at a conference-wide tournament held at a neutral location. A second purpose was to determine if the perception of a conference’s strength impacted spectators’ intent to purchase conference sponsor products. A total of 3,142 surveys were collected from spectators at school sites and the post-season basketball tournament of an NCAA Division I conference. Results …

Increasing Response Rate With Sport Volunteer Studies: A Social Exchange Theory Approach, Chrysostomos Giannaoulakis, Elizabeth Wanless, Shea Brgoch
Global Sport Business Journal
Successful sport volunteer management demands retaining volunteers from year to year and gaining feedback with respect to their experience. It is common for sport event volunteers’ psychometric characteristics to be assessed via on-site questionnaire. A well-designed questionnaire is crucial for improving response rate and increasing the quality of collected data. An adequate response rate is not only vital for meaningful interpretation of survey results, but also critical for acquiring a broad range of perspectives. The majority of research concerning response rate has focused on phone, mail, or web-surveys. Relatively little is known about the combination of techniques that could be …
Clustering By Academic Major At Historically Black Colleges And Universities (Hbcus), Aaron Goodson
Clustering By Academic Major At Historically Black Colleges And Universities (Hbcus), Aaron Goodson
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Follow-up studies of clustering by academic major, the dynamic of 25% or more of the student-athletes on a roster pursuing the same academic major, indicate that it still occurs in revenue-generating sports (Fountain & Finley 2009, 2011; Otto, 2012). Clustering challenges the notion that student-athletes have control over their collegiate academic experience and reveals that their educational pursuits may not align with their professional goals or provide a meaningful educational experience (Sharp & Sheilley, 2008). Research on clustering is absent in member institutions of different NCAA divisions, institutions with unique missions and history (such as Historically Black Colleges and Universities …
