Where Cultural Competency Begins: Changes In Undergraduate Students' Intercultural Competency, Elizabeth J. Sandell, Samantha J. Tupy Jan 2015

Where Cultural Competency Begins: Changes In Undergraduate Students' Intercultural Competency, Elizabeth J. Sandell, Samantha J. Tupy

Elementary and Literacy Education Department Publications

Teacher preparation programs and accreditation organizations have acknowledged need for educators to demonstrate intercultural knowledge, skills, and abilities. Teacher educators are responding to emphasis in higher education to assure that graduates achieve intercultural competence (NCATE, 2008). This study compared the cultural competency of university students before and after participation in domestic intensive and intentional cross-cultural undergraduate courses. Data analysis showed that undergraduate students began their classes at the same levels of intercultural competence, with ethnocentric views that minimize cultural differences between themselves and others. Students usually began with over-estimating their intercultural competence. However, their actual developmental orientation toward cultural differences …

A Historical Document Analysis Comparing High School Academic Eligibility Standards To Ncaa Academic Standards In 2014, Ashley N. Gard

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The challenges faced by student-athletes are a growing concern in todays society. Beyond heightened academic requirements, student-athletes face a multitude of tasks including weight training, practice, film review, and travel for competition. This makes the student life very complex. Jolly (2008) indicated that as student-athletes progress through their Educational experience, they experience higher structured time demands in regard to their sport participation, this being very true for college freshman. Venezia and Jaeger (2013) noted that "many studies over the past ten years have documented the disconnect between what high school teachers teach and what postsecondary instructors expect with regard to …

Fear Of Fatherhood, Deborah Weatherspoon, Wendy Sponsler, Christopher Weatherspoon, Dorothy Campbell

Walden Faculty and Staff Publications

The fatherhood role is influenced by culture, religion, social factors, and economic norms. In Jamaica pregnancy is often treated as a female only event. Women are left to visit their clinics alone and have support from female family members. The man’s focus is providing financial support. In the past fathers were subjected to migrant labor and left their families for long periods. This tradition remained even when they were not working. Today, men are taking on more of the role of fatherhood, becoming involved and supportive and experiencing the privilege of pregnancy though of a secondary nature through their partner’s …

Killer Jobs: The Dark Side Of Being A Physical Education Teacher, Dale Finn, Robin Ammon, Kimberly L. Mahoney, Gil Fried, Khadija Al Arkoubi

Sport Management Faculty Publications

The profession of physical education (PE) teacher involves a variety of risks. Most PE teachers or future teachers are aware of the risks associated with their students becoming injured. Sport law classes often discuss negligence, risk management, proper supervision, suitable equipment, appropriate instruction, proper matching of opponents, etc. The focus is primarily or exclusively on student safety. Rarely is the focus on the risks PE teachers face themselves. This article discusses the largely neglected topics of transportation, workplace violence, and slip/trip and falls, all of which are occupational hazards for PE teachers, potentially associated with serious injuries or death.

Seeing The World Differently: An Analysis Of The Impact Of A Sport-Related Study Abroad Program On Global Mindedness, Carrie W. Lecrom, Gregory Greenhalgh, Brendan Dwyer

Journal of Applied Sport Management

The purpose of this research was to determine whether there is a difference in the global mindedness of students who have participated in sport-related study abroad opportunities and those who have not. While a vast amount of research exists on the impact of studying abroad in other fields, no research has been published in the sport management field on how study abroad experiences impact students. The current study surveyed alumni of a graduate program at a mid-Atlantic university over a 12-year time frame. The course examined, offered once per year, is a two-week trip to Western Europe that focuses on …

The Impact Of Psychological Contract Breach On Student-Athlete Perceived In-Role Performance And Organizational Citizenship Behaviors, Christopher R. Barnhill, Brian A. Turner Jan 2015

The Impact Of Psychological Contract Breach On Student-Athlete Perceived In-Role Performance And Organizational Citizenship Behaviors, Christopher R. Barnhill, Brian A. Turner

Journal of Applied Sport Management

Recent research has demonstrated that breached psychological contracts between student-athletes and their coaches can have negative consequences for team members (Barnhill, Czekanski, & Turner, 2013; Barnhill & Turner, 2013, 2014). While these studies are informative, they have been focused on student-athlete attitudes. The purpose of this study was to explore how psychological contracts affect student-athletes' behaviors and performance. The results indicated that neither psychological contract breaches, nor psychological contract violation are significantly related to organizational citizenship behaviors or in-role performance of studentathletes. Implications and suggestions for future results are discussed.

Building Community Via Sport For Adolescents, Stacy Warner, Stephen Leierer Jan 2015

Building Community Via Sport For Adolescents, Stacy Warner, Stephen Leierer

Journal of Applied Sport Management

Sport is frequently claimed to foster a greater sense of community for participants. However, a dearth of quantifiable and empirical evidence supports this claim and even less is known about how sport impacts adolescents' sense of community. The aim of this research was to assess the effectiveness of a sport program for adolescents. A pre/post research design was used to determine if any changes in sense of community were experienced for adolescents who took part in a three-week sport program. Sense of community was measured using the Sense of Community Index- 2. A total of 28 participants completed pre- and …

The Glass Closet: Perceptions Of Homosexuality In Intercollegiate Sport, Jordan Bass, Robin Hardin, Elizabeth A. Taylor Jan 2015

The Glass Closet: Perceptions Of Homosexuality In Intercollegiate Sport, Jordan Bass, Robin Hardin, Elizabeth A. Taylor

Journal of Applied Sport Management

A mixed-methods approach was used to examine the perceptions and prevalence of open homosexuality in intercollegiate sport in the United States. Universityhosted biographies of NCAA Bowl Championship Series (BCS) head coaches were coded to determine the frequency of head coaches listing a wife, husband, and same-sex partner (Calhoun, LaVoi, & Johnson, 2011). These findings were paired with interviews of five college coaches exploring their feelings toward the culture surrounding homosexuality, by players, coaches, and administrators, at their university. Only one coach of more than 1,000 was identified as having a same-sex partner in university-sponsored coaching biographies. Interview findings revealed collegiate …

Student Perceptions Of The Program Component Effectiveness Of A Leisure And Sport Management Program (Lsm), Jim K. Rost, Colby B. Jubenville

Journal of Applied Sport Management

Although the trend in higher education is moving toward an emphasis on institutional mission-based funding and retention plans, little has been done to evaluate students' perceptions of academic program effectiveness and an integration of a total quality management approach to ensuring program quality. The purpose of this study was to determine what effect student perception of Leisure and Sport Management (LSM) program components had on their perception of overall program quality with regard to Deming's 14 points of Total Quality Management. Forty-eight students from a graduate LSM program completed one questionnaire, comprised of three demographic variables and 29 attitude items. …

Locating Universities Within The Phases Of Escalation Of Commitment To Intercollegiate Athletics, Calvin Nite, Michael Hutchinson, E. Nicole Melton, Adrien Bouchet

Journal of Applied Sport Management

Escalation of commitment has been studied extensively within management and has been found to be particularly prevalent within intercollegiate athletics. The purpose of this study was to broaden the scope of traditional escalation of com-mitment research by developing effective means for locating sport organizations within Staw and Ross's (1987) temporal model. In doing so, we moved beyond the typical qualitative case study approach and sought to provide more general-ized findings, both within the context of intercollegiate athletics and within the broader sport industry. Through identifying relevant factors within our data and combining those with other descriptive variables, we were able …

Toward An Understanding Of Best Practices In Student-Athlete Leadership Development Programs: Student-Athlete Perceptions And Gender Differences, Kristina Navarro, Stephen Malvaso

Journal of Applied Sport Management

Student-athletes often know how to recognize leadership but struggle to master techniques to exemplify leadership characteristics during their college experience. As Division I athletics now serve as the front porch to American institutions, the visibility of Division I student-athletes has drastically increased. With this visibility comes enhanced responsibility to represent oneself, one's team, and one's university. In turn, it is of heightened interest for higher education and intercollegiate athletics practitioners to understand how to best foster leadership skills for this unique population that garners enhanced media attention. This mixed-method case study considers the perceptions of 221 Division I freshmen student-athletes …

Deconstructing The Draft: An Evaluation Of The Nfl Draft As A Predictor Of Team Success, Zachary Reynolds, Traci Bonds, Steele Thompson, Carrie W. Lecrom

Journal of Applied Sport Management

The purpose of this investigation was to determine if the National Football League's (NFL) draft selection process aids in equalizing competitive advantage for NFL teams. This reverse order system (the draft) is said to equalize team strength by allowing weaker teams to strengthen their rosters with access to the best incoming players (Lock & Gratz, 1983). To measure this success, authors evaluated the correlation between a team's change in winning percentage and its Draft Pick Value (DPV), number of first-round picks, and total number of picks. Findings indicate a moderate positive correlation between DPV and change in winning percentage, and …

Required Donations: An Empirical Test Of Prospect Theory & Framing Of Per-Seat Contributions In Intercollegiate Athletics, Jason D. Reese, Brandon Brown, Gregg Bennett

Global Sport Business Journal

The purpose of this study was to examine how per-seat contributions are framed, and attempt to understand the effects of different price frames on consumer perceptions and behavior. In doing so, we apply prospect theory to explain how framing an outcome can change preferences and ultimately purchase behavior. The current study used an experimental design to determine which price frame most influences repurchase intentions, when considering three price tiers (e.g. low, moderate, high) determined in a pretest. Our results indicate the best way to increase purchase intentions when implementing per-seat contributions campaigns is to use the Combination price frame (i.e. …

Career Goals And Expectations Of Female Intercollegiate Athletic Administrators, Meg G. Hancock, Mary A. Hums

Global Sport Business Journal

Sport management researchers have sought to understand and address the underrepresentation of women in leadership positions in intercollegiate athletic departments. Studies suggest a male-dominated organizational structure and socio-cultural barriers as factors related to women’s inability to advance to senior leadership positions. This qualitative study provides a better understanding of the dynamic processes contributing to women’s career expectations and goals in intercollegiate athletic administration. Twenty female NCAA Division I assistant and associate athletic directors were interviewed. The findings of this study suggest professional interests and values play important roles in a woman’s choice to pursue the title of Athletic Director.

Self-Determination Theory And Wellness Tourism: How Do Wellness Facilities Contribute To Wellbeing?, Karen I. Thal Jan 2015

Self-Determination Theory And Wellness Tourism: How Do Wellness Facilities Contribute To Wellbeing?, Karen I. Thal

Theses and Dissertations

Wellness tourism as a subsector is differentiated in terms of the pursuit and enhancement of wellbeing. Wellness itself is defined as holistic wellbeing and optimal psychological states. Enhanced wellbeing is cited as the motivation and outcome of travel and in terms of dedicated infrastructure, services, and amenities at destinations. Yet enhanced wellbeing following a wellness vacation is typically assumed rather than assessed. While tourism studies have focused on wellbeing as the outcome of leisure travel, a theoretical framework that might be adapted to assess wellbeing following a stay at a wellness facility was not apparent. The majority of tourism studies …
