Culture And Government In A Land Of Conflict: An Analysis Of Northern Ireland, Emily Starbuck
Culture And Government In A Land Of Conflict: An Analysis Of Northern Ireland, Emily Starbuck
University Honors College
The following thesis is an analysis of the rich and complex history of the state of Northern Ireland and its subsequent effects on government policy, cultural identification, and public opinion concerning the use of violence. I examined the historical precedents set into place which could explain the continued violence, political party orientation, and cultural evolution which is, even now, taking place as a result of the involvement of two very different populations. I provided evidence concerning current public opinion regarding the sectarian and paramilitary violence which plagued the state for hundreds of years and continues to occur, although much less …
The Effects Of Music On Education And Early Literacy: An Insight On Defining Literacy And The Use Of Music In The Classroom, Lindsey Hawkins
The Effects Of Music On Education And Early Literacy: An Insight On Defining Literacy And The Use Of Music In The Classroom, Lindsey Hawkins
University Honors College
The purpose of this essay is to examine the effects that music has on education and literacy, and to provide insight on how to go about using music in a classroom. First, the essay will define the word ‘literacy,’ and prove why this is important, and then describe how literacy is taught in a classroom using phonics. Then, it will take a look at how music affects the student brain, and how those effects are linked directly to the way students process reading, writing, and communication. Finally, this essay will look at the direct effects that music has on education …
Making Sense Of Dress: On Sensory Perspectives Of Wardrobe Research, Else Skjold
Making Sense Of Dress: On Sensory Perspectives Of Wardrobe Research, Else Skjold
Experiential Knowledge (EKSIG) Conference Series
In this paper, I wish to exemplify how research on bodily experiences of dressing within research on fashion and dress research might be combined with user-oriented approaches from design research. By doing so, I wish to point my finger at the unfortunate wall between these two scholarly areas which to my mind has created a limited understanding of the connection between dress design, the body, and people's day-to-day routines of getting dressed. The case through which I wish to debate this is a wardrobe study of men in the age of 40-50 years old that I conducted in the period …

Viewing Fashion: A Digital Materiality Of The Moving Image, Todd Robinson
Experiential Knowledge (EKSIG) Conference Series
The paper addresses the development of a digital-visual methodology to examine the sensuous and embodied dimension of fashion. The paper discusses the conception and use of designed garments called DRESS+. Body-garment interactions are the central focus of this research, conceived as participatory activities generating a range of physical movements including behaviour, gestures and utterances for visual and thematic enquiry. This approach is presented in relation to Design Probes and emergent new media forms notably Fashion film. The paper considers two video case studies. The paper utilizes a phenomenological orientation and research from the field of Body Studies, specifically the notion …
The Role Of Doing And Making Models With Materials: Outlining “Designerly And Human-Centred Entrepreneurship”, Kirsten Bonde Sørensen, Winie Evers
The Role Of Doing And Making Models With Materials: Outlining “Designerly And Human-Centred Entrepreneurship”, Kirsten Bonde Sørensen, Winie Evers
Experiential Knowledge (EKSIG) Conference Series
This paper seeks to demonstrate the central role of making and creating models in what we call “designerly and human-centred entrepreneurship”. We refer to empirics from studies of Danish entrepreneurs working on how to develop their businesses. In Drucker ́s (2001) “Management Challenges for the 21st Century” he predicts the new paradigms of management will change and continue to change our basic assumptions about the practices and principles of management. One of the key influences is that of design. 10 years later Johansson & Woodilla argue there is a need for a paradigmatic widening within Design Management, since, if it …
A Framework For Materials Knowledge Acquisition For Designers, Anders Haug
A Framework For Materials Knowledge Acquisition For Designers, Anders Haug
Experiential Knowledge (EKSIG) Conference Series
Knowledge of materials is essential for designers in many regards. Materials affect how a product will be manufactured and how it will function, as well as the usability and personality of the product. However, existing materials are subject to ongoing changes in availability, processing methods, price and attributed meanings, and new materials are constantly being developed. Thus, designers continuously need to acquire new materials knowledge to be able to produce designs that utilise available material possibilities and achieve the desired user experiences. That makes it relevant to understand how this materials knowledge can be acquired. To provide designers and design …
"I'M, Uhh, Sorry": The Influence Of Fluency And Communication Competence On Perceptions Of Apologies, Benjamin W. Chiles, Aileen L.S. Buslig
"I'M, Uhh, Sorry": The Influence Of Fluency And Communication Competence On Perceptions Of Apologies, Benjamin W. Chiles, Aileen L.S. Buslig
Communication and Theater Association of Minnesota Journal
This paper reports the results of an experiment that examined the influence of increasing levels of nonfluency in apologies on audience perceptions. The influence of self-perceived communicator competence (SPCC) on perceptions of apologies was also examined. Favorable ratings of apologies decreased as nonfluency increased from low to moderate levels, but then increased as nonfluency increased from moderate to high levels. For high nonfluency apologies, individuals with higher SPCC rated the apology more favorably than did individuals with lower SPCC. Limitations and directions for future research are discussed.
The Semiotics Of Teaching With Reality Tv: A Theory-Based Approach To Teaching And Modeling Communication Theory, Rita L. Rahoi-Gilchrest
The Semiotics Of Teaching With Reality Tv: A Theory-Based Approach To Teaching And Modeling Communication Theory, Rita L. Rahoi-Gilchrest
Communication and Theater Association of Minnesota Journal
This article begins by establishing a rationale for not only teaching with reality television in the communication classroom, but also taking a theory-based approach to doing so. A theoretical framework for the pedagogical use of reality TV—semiotic theory, based on the work of Peirce— is presented. The discussion then moves to a specific outline of a sample classroom activity that demonstrates a semiotic approach, using the BRAVO TV website as a means of illustrating and teaching Cultural Studies Theory. The author concludes by qualifying the case for using reality TV as one—but not the only—means of teaching communication, and offers …
Collaborative Theatre/Creative Process, Jimmy Bickerstaff
Collaborative Theatre/Creative Process, Jimmy Bickerstaff
Communication and Theater Association of Minnesota Journal
Theatre production is a collaborative creative activity. Recent theory and research into group creativity recognizes the relationships between individuals, groups, and the contexts in which creativity emerges. It also suggests that between the interactive creative processes of the collaborators and their work, the work itself becomes a kind of creative entity. In this essay, I explain how all creativity is now seen as collaboration, outline this process, and illustrate the differences between seeing theatre as an aggregate, collective activity and the more integrated view, in which the process is synergistically collaborative. An understanding of the cognitive and behavioral processes of …

The 'Ex' Factor… Will They Be Friends? A Qualitative Analysis Of Post-Dissolution Communication Among Former Premarital Cohabitating Couples, Brittany Bunkers
Communication and Theater Association of Minnesota Journal
This study explores the nature of the communication between former premarital cohabitating couples. Eight research participants (n=8) were interviewed to explore how and why they do or do not continue to communicate with their former partner since the relational termination. Four categories emerged from the qualitative analysis. First, couples “slid” into cohabitation for convenience-based purposes rather than deliberately decided. Second, they experienced a breakdown in or lack of communication before and/or during the disengagement. Third, the relational termination was a gradual process, and forth, the participants offered reasons for why they do or do not remain in communication with their …
Ironical Appropriation Of Revolutionary Signs: For Memories Buried In Forgetting, Jiwu Zhou
Ironical Appropriation Of Revolutionary Signs: For Memories Buried In Forgetting, Jiwu Zhou
Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art
The ironical appropriation of revolutionary signs is a visual representation strategy widely used in contemporary art practice of China, with the purpose to transform invisible cultural trauma into visual text of remembrance. Amid the textual and visual narratives, hierarchical order of symbols and signs meets its deconstruction. Appropriation of revolutionary signs in contemporary art practice is evident in three aspects: 1) appropriation and contra-appropriation of visual signs; 2) displacement and transformation of visual images; 3) parody of visual texts. However, not all appropriation of revolutionary signs is ironical, and the criteria for irony should include semantic polysemy, contextual sharing, and …
The Effects Of Police Work On Family Life, Mercedes Spicer
The Effects Of Police Work On Family Life, Mercedes Spicer
University Honors Program
The job of a police officer is full of stressors, and these stressors can have an effect not only the police officer, but on the officer’s family as well. The main stressors police officers have to deal with are violence, time management, promotion, education, finances, and many different emotions. All of these stressors can lead to a disaster without proper treatment to diffuse the stress. Some ways that officers can get help is by having a religion, going to therapy, talking to a chaplain, and there are even several different ways that the spouse can help the officer dealing with …

Broken Up But Not Broken: Satisfaction, Adjustment, And Communication In Post-Dissolutional Relationships, Stephanie Villella
Broken Up But Not Broken: Satisfaction, Adjustment, And Communication In Post-Dissolutional Relationships, Stephanie Villella
Communication and Theater Association of Minnesota Journal
The aim of this study was to examine adjustment, satisfaction, and the frequency of communication that occurs between ex-partners in post-dissolutional relationships. Participants (N = 239) were surveyed on their levels of satisfaction, adjustment to the break-up and communication with their most recent ex-romantic partner as a means to explore the process of redefining romantic relationships into platonic friendships. Results demonstrated that who initiated the break-up influenced levels of satisfaction and adjustment. Adjustment and frequency of communication were affected by whether ex-partners had moved on to a new romantic relationship. Differences were also observed between how males and females adjusted …
Frame Analysis: Students’ Construction Of Involvement And Noninvolvement In The College Classroom, Robert J. Sidelinger, Derek M. Bolen
Frame Analysis: Students’ Construction Of Involvement And Noninvolvement In The College Classroom, Robert J. Sidelinger, Derek M. Bolen
Communication and Theater Association of Minnesota Journal
Frames and frame analysis examines the individual’s constructions of reality instead of society’s social constructions. The aim of this qualitative study is to explore college students’ (N = 434) construction of involvement and noninvolvement in the classroom from a frame analysis perspective. Six themes emerged from students’ descriptions of their perceptions of self and other students’ in-class involvement (e.g., active involvement), and eight themes emerged from descriptions of self and other students’ in-class noninvolvement (e.g., student passivity). Overall, students are likely to perceive themselves as involved and other students as noninvolved, even when the classroom behaviors are similar (e.g., listening, …

"Brother," Enjoy Your Hypermodernity! Connections Between Gilles Lipovetsky's Hypermodern Times And Post-Soviet Russian Cinema, James M. Brandon
"Brother," Enjoy Your Hypermodernity! Connections Between Gilles Lipovetsky's Hypermodern Times And Post-Soviet Russian Cinema, James M. Brandon
Communication and Theater Association of Minnesota Journal
In prominent French social philosopher Gilles Lipovetsky’s Hypermodern Times (2005), the author asserts that the world has entered the period of hypermodernity, a time where the primary concepts of modernity are taken to their extreme conclusions. The conditions Lipovetsky described were already manifesting in a number of post-Soviet Russian films. In the tradition of Slavoj Zizek’s Enjoy Your Symptom (1992), this essay utilizes a number of post-Soviet Russian films to explicate Lipovetsky’s philosophy, while also using Lipovetsky’s ideas to explicate the films. Alexei Balabanov’s 1997 film Brat (“Brother”) is examined in the context of Lipovetsky’s work, along with other films …
Foundational Fiction And National Identity In The Philippines: Reflections On Race In José Rizal’S Noli Me Tángere, Vinh Phu Pham
Foundational Fiction And National Identity In The Philippines: Reflections On Race In José Rizal’S Noli Me Tángere, Vinh Phu Pham
Nomenclatura: aproximaciones a los estudios hispánicos
This work analyses the colonial racial discourses that are apparent in the novel Noli Me Tángere by Filipino revolutionary José Rizal. The essay proposes that the novel should be viewed through the same lens as that of a Latin American “foundational fiction,” as defined by Doris Sommer, as the repetition of various romantic tropes that plays with the power dynamic between the male enlightened revolutionary and the passive native female prize. In conjunction with Sommer’s theory, I apply Deleuze and Guattari’s three-point definition of minor literature, namely related to language, political intent, and audience, thereby drawing out the political language …

Communication and Theater Association of Minnesota Journal
Constructivist learning allows learners to synthesize and understand new ideas and concepts based on their own current and past knowledge and experiences. This paper describes the constructivist philosophy of learning. The constructivist teaching and learning model is applied to a unit used in an effective listening course or a class with a unit in listening. Students construct a listening campaign demonstrating the importance of effective listening for a target audience.
Communication And Volunteerism: The Potential Impact Of Role Models, Maggie Briggs, Kristen Cvancara
Communication And Volunteerism: The Potential Impact Of Role Models, Maggie Briggs, Kristen Cvancara
Communication and Theater Association of Minnesota Journal
Volunteers are an important subset of society who provide many services to people and organizations in need. Based on Social Learning Theory, a preliminary study was designed to investigate the role communication may play in fostering positive attitudes and behaviors in college students regarding volunteerism. Surveys completed by 321 college students were collected and the relationship between instances of communication with role models (e.g., parents, peers, religious leaders, siblings, coworkers, extended family) and participant attitudes toward and rates of volunteering were examined. Results indicated the more conversations shared between role models and participants the more likely it was that participants …
The Aspiration-Attainment Gap Of Black Students In The Health Professions, Michael Stout
The Aspiration-Attainment Gap Of Black Students In The Health Professions, Michael Stout
Open Access Dissertations
This study investigated the under-representation of Black health care professionals through factors correlated with career attainment. The longitudinal design captured a 10-year period from the 10th grade until approximately age 26. This study represented the first correlational study of early adulthood predictors on health professions attainment. In a recent report by the AAMC (2014a), Black providers remained under-represented within the U.S. health care system. Under-representation of Black physicians correlated with lower cultural competency of care givers, inhospitable racial climate in the field, and an unequal quality of care for Black patients (Kaplan & Greenfield, 1996; Saha, Arbelaez, & Cooper, 2003; …
Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement: A New Method For The Treatment Of Aortic Valve Disease, Erin E. Sluyter
Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement: A New Method For The Treatment Of Aortic Valve Disease, Erin E. Sluyter
University Honors Program
As heart complications increase among the elderly population, transcatheter aortic valve replacement is a new procedure that can treat many aortic stenosis and congestive heart failure patients. Transcatheter aortic valve replacement is a common medical procedure across Europe; this investigates the possibility of the procedure’s adoption as common practice in the United States. Several factors have been identified as key components for adapting to this procedure. Medical institutions must update their catheterization labs and operating rooms as well as train all surgical staff members on the transcatheter valve technology and standard procedures. Intensive care unit and surgical recovery staff must …

Should I Say Something? Dating And Sexual Aggression Bystander Intervention Among High School Youth, Katie Edwards, Robert P. Eckstein, Kara Anne Rodenhizer-Stampfli
Carsey Publications
Using data from a sample of 218 high school youth from three high schools in New England (one rural, two urban), this brief discusses dating and sexual aggression bystander intervention among high school youth. Authors Katie Edwards, Robert Eckstein, and Kara Anne Rodenhizer-Stämpfli report that an overwhelming majority (93.6 percent) of high school students reported having the opportunity to intervene during the past year in situations of dating aggression or sexual aggression; however, in over one-third of the episodes (37.4 percent) students reported not intervening. Girls were more likely to intervene in situations of dating and sexual aggression than boys, …
