2015 香港快樂指數調查 Hong Kong Happiness Index Survey 2015, Lok Sang Ho

Hong Kong Happiness Index

According to the results of the Hong Kong Happiness Index Survey conducted by Lingnan University’s Centre for Public Policy Studies, the Happiness Index for Hong Kong people in 2015 stands at 70.0 (on a scale of 0 to 100), which is slightly lower than last year’s 70.5. Surprisingly, the Happiness Index of people aged below 30 rose from 67.8 to 69.3.

Respondents’ degree of satisfaction with the media rose slightly to 4.89 from last year’s 4.76, albeit still at a low level. Satisfaction with Hong Kong’s public policy is 4.37 (on …

Using A New Evidence-Based Health Workforce Innovation Research Framework To Compare Innovations In Community Health Center And Other Ambulatory Care Settings, Leah E. Masselink, Patricia Pittman, Claire Houterman

Health Workforce Research Center Publications

In the United States, changing demographics, rising costs, and the impact of new regulations and payment models arising from the Affordable Care Act have placed unprecedented pressures on healthcare providers to increase access to care, improve quality and to control costs. To meet these challenges, some providers are forming accountable care organizations (ACOs) while others are pursuing medical homes or other novel payment and care delivery models designed to help meet these challenges. Within established organizations such as federally funded community health centers (CHCs), healthcare leaders are exercising significant latitude in developing innovative solutions for meeting their patients’ needs more …

Hands Up At Home: Militarized Masculinity And Police Officers Who Commit Intimate Partner Abuse, Leigh Goodmark Nov 2015

Hands Up At Home: Militarized Masculinity And Police Officers Who Commit Intimate Partner Abuse, Leigh Goodmark

BYU Law Review

The deaths of Michael Brown and Eric Garner and the almost daily news stories about abusive and violent police conduct are currently prompting questions about the appropriate use of force by police officers. Moreover, the history of police brutality directed towards women is well-documented. Most of that literature, however, captures the violence that police do in their public capacity as officers of the state. This Article examines the violence and abuse perpetrated by police in their private lives, against their intimate partners. Although the public and private overlap, the power and training provided to police officers by the state makes …

Public Perceptions Of The Stigmatization Of Wrongly Convicted Individuals: Findings From Semi-Structured Interviews, Isabella M. Blandisi, Kimberley A. Clow, Rosemary Ricciardelli Nov 2015

Public Perceptions Of The Stigmatization Of Wrongly Convicted Individuals: Findings From Semi-Structured Interviews, Isabella M. Blandisi, Kimberley A. Clow, Rosemary Ricciardelli

The Qualitative Report

Many exonerees report stigmatizing experiences and difficulties securing gainful employment post-incarceration. Although researchers have begun to investigate public perceptions of wrongful conviction, there remains a dearth of knowledge about public perceptions of exonerees. To provide insight into how the public perceives exonerees, face-to-face interviews were conducted with members (n=30) of a suburban city in South Central Ontario. Data analysis included a constructed grounded approach to reveal emergent themes in the transcripts. All interviewees acknowledged that wrongly convicted individuals are stigmatized by the public and that this can have negative effects in many of their lived experiences. In addition, findings of …

The Mechanisms Of Moral Disengagement In George W. Bush’S “War On Terror” Rhetoric, Stefan Cartledge, Lorraine Bowman-Grieve, Marek Palasinski Nov 2015

The Mechanisms Of Moral Disengagement In George W. Bush’S “War On Terror” Rhetoric, Stefan Cartledge, Lorraine Bowman-Grieve, Marek Palasinski

The Qualitative Report

Despite considerable literature on the Bush administration’s war on terrorism rhetoric, little attention has been paid to its discourse of moral disengagement, leaving an important and still relevant gap that this paper aims to address. Rather than approaching this gap in terms of an archival historical analysis that is disconnected from the present, it proposes an exploratory revisit of the rhetoric that the benefits of hindsight might enrich and, we argue, aid in understanding connections to the current post-invasion turmoil and the gradual ISIS takeover. Having subjected nineteen presidential speeches to qualitative content analysis, we identified a number of moral …

Starting Where You Are: How Race Can Constrain Researchers Within The Research Setting, Kamesha Spates, Wangari Gichiru Nov 2015

Starting Where You Are: How Race Can Constrain Researchers Within The Research Setting, Kamesha Spates, Wangari Gichiru

The Qualitative Report

What challenges can race and gender present for researchers of color? As Black women, we draw on personal reflections to look back at our graduate training and its influence on how we conducted ourselves in the field as graduate students and now as researchers in the academy. We particularly consider how mainstream pedagogical approaches to teaching qualitative methods might work to marginalize researchers of color throughout the qualitative research process. We lay out these complexities, not necessarily to offer solutions but rather to allow others in similar situations to think about their own journey as we collectively move qualitative research …

Towards A Relationship-Centered Approach In Higher Education: The Dynamic Student Development Metatheodel (Dsdm), Mark Frederick, Pietro A. Sasso, William R. Barratt

New York Journal of Student Affairs

College success is often too simply measured as ultimate graduation and overlooks students' critical need for a perceived sense of affiliation and belonging to the collegiate community which develops self-identity as a college student and can result in a higher level of performance over the academic lifespan. This article presents the Dynamic Student Development Metatheodel (DSDM) which was developed from common factors identified in multiple theories and models of human development, student development, and learning. When intentionally employed, the DSDM can be expected to improve retention, persistence, and ultimate graduation, as well as improve students' academic and co-curricular experience.

Just As Aggressive Off-Field?: A Look At Football Player’S Aggression In Relation To Sexual Assault, Emily Sturgess

University Honors Program

Over the past several years, many athletes, football players in particular, have been accused of sexually violent acts. This article explores various aspects of an athlete’s life that could influence their decisions and potentially play a role in their choice to commit sexually violent acts. The four areas of research include biological makeup of an athlete, an athlete’s sense of entitlement, environmental factors and whether athletes are actually punished according to their crime. Research was conducted using previously published areas from a variety of fields including psychology, health, and racial and ethnic studies journals, as well as law reviews. Examples …

Euthanasia: Is It Ethically And Morally Acceptable?, Hannah Carmichael

University Honors Program

All over the world, there is discussion being made about euthanasia and if it is ethically and morally acceptable. The opinions are different from state to state and country to country. These differences in opinions evolve from different religions, political forces, generations, genders, and social classes. Through literature review, an overview of euthanasia, along with the ethical dilemmas, the laws regarding euthanasia, and the financial outcomes of euthanasia will be presented. Findings suggest that there may never be a definitive answer to the ethics of euthanasia, but more discussion and research can lead to a more understanding of the positive …

Personal Responsibility For Systemic Inequality, Martha T. Mccluskey Nov 2015

Personal Responsibility For Systemic Inequality, Martha T. Mccluskey

Contributions to Books

Published as Chapter 15 in Research Handbook on Political Economy and Law, Ugo Mattei & John D. Haskell, eds.

Equality has faded as a guiding ideal for legal theory and policy. An updated message of personal responsibility has helped rationalize economic policies fostering increased inequality and insecurity. In this revised message, economic “losers” should take personal responsibility not only for the harmful effects of their individual economic decisions, but also for the harmful effects of systemic failures beyond their individual control or action. In response to the 2008 financial crisis, this re-tooled message of personal responsibility promoted mass austerity in …

Climate Change And Interpersonal Violence: A "Global" Estimate And Regional Inequities, Dennis Mares, Kenneth W. Moffett Nov 2015

Climate Change And Interpersonal Violence: A "Global" Estimate And Regional Inequities, Dennis Mares, Kenneth W. Moffett

SIUE Faculty Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activity

This study estimates the predicted impact of climate change on levels of violence in a sample of 57 countries. We sample western and non-western countries and perform a multilevel ARFIMA regression to examine if warmer temperatures are associated with higher levels of homicide. Our results indicate that each degree Celsius increase in annual temperatures is associated with a nearly 6% average increase in homicides. Regional variation in this predicted effect is detected, for example, with no apparent effects in former Soviet countries and far stronger effects found in Africa. This variation indicates that climate change may acutely increase violence in …

Negotiating Risk And Uncertainty: Internal Migration And Rural Villagers In Albay Province, Hedda Ransan-Cooper Nov 2015

Negotiating Risk And Uncertainty: Internal Migration And Rural Villagers In Albay Province, Hedda Ransan-Cooper

Philippine Studies: Historical and Ethnographic Viewpoints

Thisarticle examines the role of local discourses of risk and associated affective practices (embodied emotions) in decisions to migrate from rural to urban/peri-urban areas. Drawing on a study in a rural setting in Albay province, it argues that mobility decisions involve negotiation between public discourses about risk and a private self that considers one’s capabilities and experiences. Although the risks associated with mobility are actively managed, these are imbued with uncertainty and are based on incalculable aspects of risk management such as hope and trust, especially among immediate social networks as practices of communal risk management have become increasingly undermined. Keywords: …

Changes In The Ideal Body Type, Jessica L. Hoffman Nov 2015

Changes In The Ideal Body Type, Jessica L. Hoffman

University Honors Program

The human body comes in all shapes and sizes. Each different body shape allows onlookers to evaluate at least some aspects of the subject’s lifestyle and priorities. All eras choose a body type that they exalt above the rest. The goal of this research is to evaluate the considered ideal body type from three different eras in order to better understand these time periods and their values. A compilation of books and journal articles were used from the Cunningham Memorial Library Database, the library itself, and other personal libraries to better understand this topic. The most pertinent question was what …

Culture And Government In A Land Of Conflict: An Analysis Of Northern Ireland, Emily Starbuck Nov 2015

Culture And Government In A Land Of Conflict: An Analysis Of Northern Ireland, Emily Starbuck

University Honors Program

The following thesis is an analysis of the rich and complex history of the state of Northern Ireland and its subsequent effects on government policy, cultural identification, and public opinion concerning the use of violence. I examined the historical precedents set into place which could explain the continued violence, political party orientation, and cultural evolution which is, even now, taking place as a result of the involvement of two very different populations. I provided evidence concerning current public opinion regarding the sectarian and paramilitary violence which plagued the state for hundreds of years and continues to occur, although much less …

The Effects Of Music On Education And Early Literacy: An Insight On Defining Literacy And The Use Of Music In The Classroom, Lindsey Hawkins

University Honors Program

The purpose of this essay is to examine the effects that music has on education and literacy, and to provide insight on how to go about using music in a classroom. First, the essay will define the word ‘literacy,’ and prove why this is important, and then describe how literacy is taught in a classroom using phonics. Then, it will take a look at how music affects the student brain, and how those effects are linked directly to the way students process reading, writing, and communication. Finally, this essay will look at the direct effects that music has on education …

American Culture’S Impact On Gender And The Perpetuation Of A Gender Binary, Anna Blaho Nov 2015

American Culture’S Impact On Gender And The Perpetuation Of A Gender Binary, Anna Blaho

University Honors Program

This thesis explores the origins of American culture’s fixation on gender being a dichotomous concept. Through the analysis of previous research surrounding the subject of gender roles, expectations, and stereotypes, contributors to this restrictive mind frame as well as reinforcing agents were recognized. Historical trends have demonstrated the assignment of clear and separate tasks to the genders, which in turn created differentiated experiences and opportunities presented to each gender. Facilitated by the historical basis, American culture emulated similar patterns that instilled inflexible conceptions about gender to the point where it has created a discriminate workplace environment. As a consequence of …
