Community Development And Its Socioeconomic Impact On A Latino Enclave: A Case Study Of The Frog Hollow Neighborhood In Hartford, Connecticut, Reinaldo Rojas

Doctoral Dissertations

The topic of low-income neighborhoods and the different approaches to community development dominate the national discussion on urban revitalization and poverty reduction. The debate is ongoing, regardless of whether economic development models serve the broader interests of the community or the narrow interests of proponents and benefactors. This study analyzes the impact of urban revitalization projects in the Frog Hollow neighborhood of Hartford, Connecticut, an impoverished but vibrant Latino enclave in the city. Frog Hollow underwent a highly publicized series of revitalization projects during the 2000s, where business owners, community organizations and local government were involved in both development and …

Reinventing The Role Of Children And Youth In Post-Conflict Peacebuilding, Amirah M. Alias Aug 2015

Reinventing The Role Of Children And Youth In Post-Conflict Peacebuilding, Amirah M. Alias

Capstone Collection

This paper underlines the roles of children and youth in post-conflict peacebuilding and the reinvention of their roles from participants of peacebuilding to active facilitators of post-conflict peacebuilding. The reinvention is based on the re-interpretation of the traditional roles of children and youth in post-conflict peacebuilding and the analysis of children and youth peacebuilding programs. The re-interpretation will suggest that children and youth take on a more active role, if not, a leadership role in peacebuilding programs conducted for children and youth. This paper will look at the historical and contextual information about Nigeria's inter-religious conflict and a youth peacebuilding …

Perceived Father Roles Of Married African American Men: A Phenomenological Study, Felicia Murray, Shann Hwa Hwang

The Qualitative Report

Data is limited regarding the cultural and racial variations of fatherhood. The purpose of this phenomenological study was to understand the lived experiences of eight married African American fathers focusing on their perceptions of father roles and responsible fathering behaviors. Specifically, the study highlighted two critical issues: (1) men’s perceptions about their roles as fathers; and (2) how historical characterizations of father roles can serve as a mechanism for understanding males’ current perceptions. The researchers identified seven role themes: provider, role model/sex role model, disciplinarian, leader, supporter, teacher/spiritual teacher, and guide. Implications for family science practitioners and researchers as well …

Teaching Qualitative Research: Fostering Student Curiositythrough An Arts-Informed Pedagogy, Jennifer Lapum, Sarah Hume

The Qualitative Report

Creative pedagogical approaches in higher education can facilitate students’ journey in thinking like and becoming a qualitative researcher. Pedagogical approaches tend to focus on procedural steps of qualitative research neglecting students’ development of cognitive skills and reflective capacity. Arts-informed teaching methods for qualitative research show promise as an educational development in stimulating student interest and expanding their understanding of qualitative research through an experiential approach to learning. In this article, the use of an arts-informed pedagogy to structure a graduate level qualitative research course is discussed. This pedagogy, grounded in experiential teaching-learning theories, was developed to foster students’ curiosity as …

Retrofitting Urban Flood Resilience: An Investigation And Evaluation Of Current Strategies, J. D. Harper Aug 2015

Retrofitting Urban Flood Resilience: An Investigation And Evaluation Of Current Strategies, J. D. Harper

Theses

There are two trends that are creating a worldwide crisis. Firstly, cities are growing denser every day, and many of the major cities developed along the coasts or with adjacencies to water, stemming from a thriving trade industry and industrialization. On a separate track, the effects of global climate change are projected to increase sea level along with the frequency and intensity of flooding disasters. Therefore, these projections are placing cities at a highly vulnerable crux with few foreseeable solutions in sight.

In the wake of Hurricane Sandy, the Flood Insurance Rate Maps (FIRMs) were redrawn, and buildings that previously …

The study involved 407 students studying at nine international schools in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). It was found that recommendations and feedback resulting from …

Ground Reaction Forces Are Predicted With Functional And Clinical Tests In A Healthy Collegiate Population, Paul Cacolice

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Purpose: This study aimed to generate models predicting Ground Reaction Forces (GRFs), an established predictor of ACL injury incidence, from practical functional and clinical tests. Participants: Forty-two healthy, active college age individuals (21 females, age 20.667±1.461; 70.702±2.363cm; 82.202±7.606kg; 21 males, age 21.571±1.28; 65.524±1.874cm; 64.190±9.059kg) participated.

Methods and Materials: After assuring all participants met inclusion criteria and provided consent, lower extremity (LE) dominance was determined with drop landings. Individuals then had Fat Free Mass [FFM] determined from skinfolds, ankle joint dorsiflexion passive range of motion taken with a standard goniometer [DPROM], and performed the overhead deep squat test [ODS]. Juvenile Court And Direct Appeal From Waiver Of Jurisdiction In Ohio, Thomas F. Haskins Jr. Aug 2015

Juvenile Court And Direct Appeal From Waiver Of Jurisdiction In Ohio, Thomas F. Haskins Jr.

Akron Law Review

ANY DISCUSSION OF SPECIFIC ASPECTS of juvenile law necessarily requires that at least a brief inquiry be made into the history of its development. This becomes apparent when it is realized that juvenile law is not the product of a neat and orderly background, but rather the result of numerous sociological and economic conditions surrounding not only individual communities but the whole society. It is with this motivation that the statutory creation of juvenile law builds and continues to thrive. And, it is for this reason that this comment concerning the loss of the benefits of the juvenile laws through …

Courts, Creditors' Rights; Debtors' Protection; Sequestration; Mitchell V. W.T. Grant Co., Sandra J. Pickut

Akron Law Review

SINCE 1969, AND TE DECISION in Sniadach v. Family Finance Corp.,' the confrontation between the creditor and the constitution has continued apace. Sniadach began an expansion of the measure of due process applicable to creditors' prejudgment remedies, and heralded a new era of protection for the property interests of vendee-debtors under the cloak of the fourteenth amendment. However, the most recent decision of the Supreme Court on summary prejudgment remedies, Mitchell v. W. T. Grant Co., appears to have abruptly halted that expansion and has returned judicial thinking to a concept of due process prevalent in the pre-Sniadach era. Accordingly, …
