Culture And Cognition: The Role Culture Plays In Cognitive Development In Rural Tanzania, Eileen Seissen
Culture And Cognition: The Role Culture Plays In Cognitive Development In Rural Tanzania, Eileen Seissen
Capstone Collection
This capstone paper examines the perceived difference of cognition in a Tanzanian classroom. It also examines the effects culture has on cognition. It aims to answer the questions: What role does Tanzanian culture play in shaping the cognitive skills of its children? And, from an American trainers perspective, within an experiential learning environment, what cognitive differences are perceived in abstract thinking, creativity, critical thinking, and problem-solving? Nine American trainers, one Tanzanian trainer, and one Tanzanian student participated in my study. Each participant filled out a questionnaire geared toward understanding their training methods and perceptions of participant's skills and abilities. After …

Research Brief: "Military And Mental Health Correlates Of Unemployment In A National Sample Of Women Veterans", Institute For Veterans And Military Families At Syracuse University
Institute for Veterans and Military Families
This study found that unemployment among female veterans was independently associated with screening positive for depression, as well as several other factors related to military service and veteran status. In practice, caring for the mental health of female veterans might improve their employment prospects, and in addition, many unemployed female veterans expressed that civilian coworkers did not understand their military experience. In policy, the VA and other federal agencies might model programs to support unemployed female veterans after the Institute for Veterans and Military Families’ Veteran Women Igniting the Spirit of Entrepreneurship (V-WISE) program. Suggestions for future study include incorporating …
Electronic Health Record Optimization For Cardiac Care, Lisa A. Grabenbauer
Electronic Health Record Optimization For Cardiac Care, Lisa A. Grabenbauer
Theses & Dissertations
Electronic health record (EHR) systems have been studied for over 30 years, and despite the benefits of information technology in other knowledge domains, progress has been slow in healthcare. A growing body of evidence suggests that dissatisfaction with EHR systems was not simply due to resistance to adoption of new technology but also due to real concerns about the adverse impact of EHRs on the delivery of patient care. Solutions for EHR improvement require an approach that combines an understanding of technology adoption with the complexity of the social and technical elements of the US healthcare system. Several studies are …
Understanding Access To Health Information: The Role And Measurement Of Social Location, Megan S. Kelley
Understanding Access To Health Information: The Role And Measurement Of Social Location, Megan S. Kelley
Theses & Dissertations
The purpose of this research is to explore how application of social location theory may improve data collection on health information access in order to better inform and improve the effectiveness of health communication and messaging. This dissertation proposes a framework to understand how people obtain health information based on the idea of social location, Ritzer and Bell’s (1981) levels of social reality, and Dahlberg & Krug’s (2002) social ecological model. This research addressed the extent to which three studies of health information access support the use of such a framework, and if so, how its application could improve our …
Shared Prosperity Initiative As A Solution To The City Of Kalamazoo's Impoverished, Maurice Washington
Shared Prosperity Initiative As A Solution To The City Of Kalamazoo's Impoverished, Maurice Washington
Honors Theses
The Shared Prosperity Kalamazoo Initiative acts a combatant to reducing poverty for the City of Kalamazoo rather than a solution. Combining micro social work training of treatment plans for clients and its incorporated methodologies to the macro problem of poverty for the City’s constituents emphasizes a unique but valuable perspective to have as a potential policy maker. The question is whether such a perspective is truly applicable and such was the goal of the nearly year-long research. Data obtained from interviews, meetings, focus groups and interviews were reviewed from a prior initiative to formulate much of the research and analysis. …
Controlling The Influence Of Stereotypes On One’S Thoughts (Preprint Title: Controlling Implicit Bias: Insights From A Public Health Perspective), Patrick S. Forscher, Patricia G. Devine
Controlling The Influence Of Stereotypes On One’S Thoughts (Preprint Title: Controlling Implicit Bias: Insights From A Public Health Perspective), Patrick S. Forscher, Patricia G. Devine
Psychological Science Faculty Publications and Presentations
Research on reducing or controlling implicit bias has been characterized by a tension between the two goals of reducing lingering intergroup disparities and gaining insight into human cognition. The tension between these two goals has created two distinct research traditions, each of which is characterized by different research questions, methods, and ultimate goals. We argue that the divisions between these research traditions are more apparent than real and that the two research traditions could be synergistic. We attempt to integrate the two traditions by arguing that implicit bias, and the disparities it is presumed to cause, is a public health …
The Influence Of Self-Determined Motivation On Security Education Training And Awareness (Seta) Programs, Philip Roy Menard
The Influence Of Self-Determined Motivation On Security Education Training And Awareness (Seta) Programs, Philip Roy Menard
Theses and Dissertations
Despite the best efforts of many organizations, protection of information assets continues to be a major problem for a number of firms. A large portion of data breaches can be attributed to employees of the organization, who have been commonly identified as the weakest link in an organization’s overall security profile. Organizations implement security policies to give their employees guidelines for appropriate behavior related to information protection. For policies to be effective, employees must exhibit adequate comprehension of the secure behaviors described in the policy. Security Education, Training, and Awareness (SETA) programs have been utilized as an organizational mechanism for …
Attachment Style And Motivation To Volunteer Among Emerging Adult College Students, Jennifer R. Smith
Attachment Style And Motivation To Volunteer Among Emerging Adult College Students, Jennifer R. Smith
Theses and Dissertations
Viewing motivation to volunteer through an attachment theory perspective may enhance understanding of volunteering motivations. A questionnaire was administered to (N=155) emerging adult college students using a Lykert-type scale (1 - 7) to assess attachment (Bartholomew & Horowitz, 1991) and motivation to volunteer (Omoto & Snyder, 1994). Five forward linear regression analyses were conducted to identify significant predictors of attachment style on motivation to volunteer. For each analysis, one of the five motivations to volunteer variables (values, understanding, esteem enhancement, personal development, community concern) was regressed on the combination of four attachment style variables (secure, avoidant, anxious ambivalent, dismissing avoidant). …
I Can't Accept Your "Lifestyle" Because I Love You Mississippi Christians' Beliefs And Attitudes Toward Homosexuality And Gay And Lesbian Civil Rights, Ashley A. Baker
I Can't Accept Your "Lifestyle" Because I Love You Mississippi Christians' Beliefs And Attitudes Toward Homosexuality And Gay And Lesbian Civil Rights, Ashley A. Baker
Theses and Dissertations
Using surveys and interviews with Mississippi Christians, this study provides a more complete understanding of Christians’ beliefs and attitudes toward homosexuality and gay and lesbian civil rights. I analyze how Mississippi Christians make sense of their relationships with gay and lesbian friends and family members and how this differs based on their religious identity. I then consider how these beliefs and attitudes are influenced by social contact with gays and lesbians. I find Mississippi Christians’ views toward homosexuality and gay and lesbian civil rights vary widely from rejection to acceptance. The most conservative views are held by evangelical Protestants who …
The Influence Of Economic And Cultural Factors On Social Cleavage In U.S. Presidential Elections From 1980 To 2008, Young Bin Lim
The Influence Of Economic And Cultural Factors On Social Cleavage In U.S. Presidential Elections From 1980 To 2008, Young Bin Lim
Theses and Dissertations
I examine the relationship between social structural factors and political behavior by applying the concept of social cleavage in American society. Lipset and Rokkan (1967) developed the concept of social cleavage to explain the influence of social structure on political behavior in the 1960s. They suggest that social cleavage emerged in Western Europe in the 1920s and persisted until the 1960s. Some scholars claim that the influence of social group membership is not as influential in predicting voting behavior in elections as it was in the 1960s, while other scholars argue that social cleavages are still important in explaining individuals’ …
Desiring Machines And Nomad Spaces: Neoliberalism, Performativity And Becoming In Senior Secondary Drama Classrooms, Kirsten Lambert, Peter Wright, Jan Currie, Robin Pascoe
Desiring Machines And Nomad Spaces: Neoliberalism, Performativity And Becoming In Senior Secondary Drama Classrooms, Kirsten Lambert, Peter Wright, Jan Currie, Robin Pascoe
Research outputs 2014 to 2021
This paper explores Deleuze and Guattari's schizoanalysis in relation to student and teacher becomings and the way these are actualised within the neoliberal and heterosexually striated spaces of the secondary school assemblage. Deleuze and Guattari considered a narrow approach to education problematic and called for creativity as a site of ‘resistance’. Drama is one subject rich with potentiality for students to strengthen their creativity and ‘speak back’ against the neoliberal project. What our research revealed is how the drama classroom is an open, dynamic space where students can embody different identities at a critical time in their adolescent development. What …
When Ideas Migrate: A Postcolonial Perspective On Biomodd [Lba2], Ds Maranan, Acj Vermeulen
When Ideas Migrate: A Postcolonial Perspective On Biomodd [Lba2], Ds Maranan, Acj Vermeulen
School of Art, Design and Architecture
Biomodd is a global series of art installations in which computer technology and ecology converge. Computer networks built from upcycled computer components are provided with living internal ecosystems. In a symbiotic exchange, plants and algae live alongside electronics and use the latter’s waste heat to thrive. Sensors and robotics provide additional interaction possibilities with the organisms. The first version of the project was completed in the US, while the second version was built in the Philippines. Using a postcolonial stance, we reflect on the challenges involved in translating the project from one context to another. We focus on issues related …

Mind The Gap: Understanding The Lack Of Social Integration Between U.S. National And International Students, Danika Delano
Capstone Collection
This capstone paper explores the issue of social integration between international and U.S. national students and focuses on the international student community of the Foundation for International Understanding Through Students (FIUTS), a non-profit that supports students at the University of Washington-Seattle (UW). A survey was administered to 106 UW students involved in FIUTS to test the hypothesis that the FIUTS community desired to have more U.S. nationals involved in the program. After establishing a desire for increased social integration between U.S. national and international students from within the FIUTS community, fifteen U.S. national students who were not involved in FIUTS …
The End Of The Cold War: Can American Constitutionalism Survive Victory?, Stephen Matthew Feldman
The End Of The Cold War: Can American Constitutionalism Survive Victory?, Stephen Matthew Feldman
Faculty Articles
The nations Cold War battle against the Soviet Union pervasively influenced American law and society as numerous scholars have observed The Cold War for instance spurred the strengthening of civil rights and the capitalist economy The federal government needed to protect civil rights at least symbolically to deflect Soviet denunciations of democracyMeanwhile the ostentatious exhibition and use of American consumer products contrasted American economic prosperity with Soviet struggles Thus during the Cold War the government and the capitalist leaders were bonded together in a struggle against the communist enemy The overriding desire for Cold War victory tempered potential political demands …

Introduction Walking is a preferred and recommended physical activity for middle-aged and older adults, but many barriers exist, including concerns about safety (ie, personal security), falling, and inclement weather. Mall walking programs may overcome these barriers. The purpose of this study was to summarize the evidence on the health-related value of mall walking and mall walking programs. Methods We conducted a scoping review of the literature to determine the features, environments, and benefits of mall walking programs using the RE-AIM framework (reach, effectiveness, adoption, implementation, and maintenance). The inclusion criteria were articles that involved adults aged 45 years or older …

A Queer Liberation Movement? A Qualitative Content Analysis Of Queer Liberation Organizations, Investigating Whether They Are Building A Separate Social Movement, Joseph Nicholas Defilippis
Dissertations and Theses
In the last forty years, U.S. national and statewide LGBT organizations, in pursuit of "equality" through a limited and focused agenda, have made remarkably swift progress moving that agenda forward. However, their agenda has been frequently criticized as prioritizing the interests of White, middle-class gay men and lesbians and ignoring the needs of other LGBT people. In their shadows have emerged numerous grassroots organizations led by queer people of color, transgender people, and low-income LGBT people. These "queer liberation" groups have often been viewed as the left wing of the GRM, but have not been extensively studied. My research investigated …

Achievement In Mathematics And Self-Concept Among Gifted Female High School Seniors, Leah M. Battin
School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Theses and Dissertations
The author sought to explore the research question, What is the relationship between mathematics achievement and self-concept of gifted female high school seniors? Review of the literature included discussions of definitions and stereotypes of giftedness, gender differences in math/STEM attitudes and achievement, malleable versus fixed intelligence and ability in math, self-concept, and stereotype threat. The author worked with gifted female high school students at a summer camp for gifted students in South Dakota. Participants were recruited from the group of young women who had finished the camp in 2014. Of 20 young women contacted, five returned letters of consent. A …

Postwar Residential New Towns In Japan: Constructing Modernism, Michelle L. Hauk
Postwar Residential New Towns In Japan: Constructing Modernism, Michelle L. Hauk
Graduate School of Architecture & Urban Design Theses & Dissertations
In 1963, Japan passed the New Residential Town Development Act prompting the construction of publicly constructed large-scale residential satellite towns across the nation in response to a severe housing crisis. Addressing two case studies, Senri New Town near Osaka and Tama New Town outside of Tokyo, this thesis examines the historical and social context of the design and construction of postwar new towns by tracing the institutional, intellectual, and architectural histories that shaped their urban form. Senri New Town, the first to be built in Japan, exemplified the model for the postwar new town while Tama New Town, the largest, …

Learning The Rules Of The ‘Student Game’: Transforming The ‘Student Habitus’ Through [Im]Mobility, Mark Holton
Learning The Rules Of The ‘Student Game’: Transforming The ‘Student Habitus’ Through [Im]Mobility, Mark Holton
School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences
In recent years, a growing body of literature has emerged concerning the mobilities of students, specifically relating to the interactions between local and non-local students, which can accentuate unequal access to education; social interactions and learner outcomes. Central to much of this literature is a sense that being mobile in institutional choice is the most appropriate and expected approach to successful university life. Conversely, local students, disadvantaged by their age, history, external commitments and immobility, are thought to be unlikely to share the same ‘student experiences’ as their traditional counterparts, leading to feelings of alienation within the student community. This …

From Hierarchies To Markets: Fedex Drivers And The Work Contract As Institutional Marker, Julia Tomassetti
From Hierarchies To Markets: Fedex Drivers And The Work Contract As Institutional Marker, Julia Tomassetti
Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works
Judges are often called upon today to determine whether certain workers are “employees” or “independent contractors.” The distinction is important, because only employees have rights under most statutes regulating work, including wage and hour, anti-discrimination, and collective bargaining law. Too often judges exclude workers from statutory protection who resemble what legal scholars have described as typical, industrial employees — long-term, full-time workers with set wages and routinized responsibilities within a large firm. To explain how courts reach these counterintuitive results, the article examines recent federal decisions finding that FedEx delivery drivers are independent contractors rather than employees. It argues that …

Behind At The Starting Line: Poverty Among Hispanic Infants, Daniel T. Lichter, Scott R. Sanders, Kenneth M. Johnson
Carsey Publications
In this brief, authors Daniel Lichter, Scott Sanders, and Kenneth Johnson examine the economic circumstances of Hispanic infants using the Census Bureau’s American Community Survey annual microdata files from 2006 through 2010. They report that a disproportionate share of Hispanic infants start life’s race behind the starting line, poor and disadvantaged—an important finding because the proportion of all U.S. births that are Hispanic is growing rapidly. The poverty risk is especially high among rural Hispanic infants and those in new destinations. Despite higher poverty risks, Hispanic infants receive less governmental assistance. High Hispanic infant poverty has immediate and long-term consequences …
