Domestic Violence In Saudi Arabia, Sahar Alhabdan Oct 2015

Domestic Violence In Saudi Arabia, Sahar Alhabdan

Maurer Theses and Dissertations

Family violence is a serious issue that affects women in Saudi Arabia. In response to cultural acceptance of violence between spouses in Saudi Arabia, the government issued its first law criminalizing domestic violence in 2013. The Protection from Abuse Act was proposed to improve protection for women and to punish the abusers, but several articles in the Act may reduce its effectiveness. Issuing laws prohibiting domestic violence cannot by itself protect women. Women should be protected under family law by preserving their rights to marry, divorce, obtain custody of children, and receive alimony. This dissertation will study the issue of …

The Law Of Intimate Work, Naomi Schoenbaum Oct 2015

The Law Of Intimate Work, Naomi Schoenbaum

Washington Law Review

This Article introduces the concept of intimate work—intimate services provided by paid workers to a range of consumers—and seeks to unify its treatment in law. The concept explains multiple exceptions to work law that have previously been viewed as random and even contradictory. From the daycare worker to the divorce lawyer, the nurse to the hairstylist, intimate work introduces an intimate party—the consumer—into the arm’s-length employer-employee dyad on which work law is premised. This disruption leads to limited enforcement of non-compete agreements, the waiver or imposition of fiduciary duties, and exceptions to wage-and-hour and antidiscrimination law, among other consequences. The …

The Role Of Place In Explaining Racial Heterogeneity In Cognitive Outcomes Among Older Adults, Sze Yan Liu, M Maria Glymou, Laura B. Zahodne, Christopher Weiss, Jennifer J. Manly Oct 2015

The Role Of Place In Explaining Racial Heterogeneity In Cognitive Outcomes Among Older Adults, Sze Yan Liu, M Maria Glymou, Laura B. Zahodne, Christopher Weiss, Jennifer J. Manly

Department of Public Health Scholarship and Creative Works

Racially patterned disadvantage in Southern states, especially during the formative years of primary school, may contribute to enduring disparities in adult cognitive outcomes. Drawing on a lifecourse perspective, we examine whether state of school attendance affects cognitive outcomes in older adults and partially contributes to persistent racial disparities. Using data from older African American and white participants in the national Health and Retirement Study (HRS) and the New York based Washington Heights Inwood Cognitive Aging Project (WHICAP), we estimated age-and gender-adjusted multilevel models with random effects for states predicting years of education and cognitive outcomes (e.g., memory and vocabulary). We …

Poor Air Quality Affects Those Who Have Served In Afghanistan, Kaylee Wheeler Oct 2015

Poor Air Quality Affects Those Who Have Served In Afghanistan, Kaylee Wheeler

Department of Environmental Studies: Undergraduate Student Theses

The United States has been in the war against terrorism for the past 14 years in Afghanistan. Afghanistan is a country torn by war for hundreds of years which has impacted the landscape and the environment. The economy of Afghanistan has suffered as a result and the country is classified as an underdeveloped country, but the economy is gaining on a slow increase. There is still little enforcement on the environmental regulations resulting in thousands of Afghani deaths every year from poor air quality. The United States has contributed to the poor air quality by using open burn pits to …

This is where wine comes in, wine is a complex and concrete representation of each subtle ecosystem change that occurs in the environment. Therefore, the research question for this study is, can wine be used as a tool to raise individuals awareness levels about the environment? This study was conducted at three wineries in the location of Lincoln Nebraska, through implementation of a Google Forums survey. The survey consisted of a combination of categorical and quantitative …

Investigating The Relationship Between Local Environmental Knowledge And Environmental Concern Among College Students, Danielle Hardesty Oct 2015

Investigating The Relationship Between Local Environmental Knowledge And Environmental Concern Among College Students, Danielle Hardesty

Department of Environmental Studies: Undergraduate Student Theses

Our global society is becoming increasingly aware of the way the climate is changing worldwide and the consequences that will result from those changes. An individual’s level of concern for the environment will likely affect how willing they are to engage in and support behaviors that aim to preserve the natural world. This study aimed to determine how local environmental literacy, degree program type and college grade level impact environmental concern. Two surveys were used in this project: one to measure environmental concern and one to measure local environmental literacy. The survey measuring environmental concern was the Revised New Ecological …

Gender Ideals And Determinant Factors For Marriage In Contemporary Mexico, Bereniz Montelongo

Writing Programs

Bereniz Montelongo’s research essay, Gender Ideals and Determinant Factors for Marriage in Contemporary Mexico, explores the link between characteristics of gender and marital norms throughout Mexico. Beginning with the colonial period and moving into the contemporary era, Bereniz identifies how marital norms have shifted in relation to changing views of gender roles. She examines factors like the idea of women as both caregivers and breadwinners, the level of value placed on marriage, and Mexico’s standards for same-sex marriage. This paper was written for Margarita Ochoa’s First Year Seminar Class: History of Race and Gender.
