Un Cri Dans Le Silence: Une Analyse Culturelle Et Littéraire De L’Émergence De Thèmes Homosexuels Dans Les Oeuvres De Gide Et Guibert, Ryan James Evelyn

Honors Theses and Capstones

This thesis, originally written in French, aims to explore the ways in which male homosexuality is represented and defined in contemporary French literature through the novels of André Gide and Hervé Guibert. I will argue and defend the existence of two cultural domains of existence, the private and public, and how each is represented in Les Faux-monnayeurs (1925) and À l'ami qui ne m'a pas sauvé la vie (1990), respectively. French literature of the 20th century in regards to homosexuality endured a cultural and sociological evolution that resulted in the disappearance of the private domain and the creation of the …

Uneven Experiences: The Impact Of Student-Faculty Interactions On International Students' Sense Of Belonging, Chris R. Glass, Elizabeth Kociolek, Rachawan Wongtrirat, R. Jason Lynch, Summer Cong

Educational Leadership & Workforce Development Faculty Publications

This study examines student-faculty interactions in which U.S. professors signal social inclusion or exclusion, facilitating–or inhibiting–international students’ academic goal pursuits. It compares narratives of 40 international students from four purposefully sampled subgroups – academic preparedness (low, high) and financial resources (low, high). Overall, international students’ interactions with professors were marked by joy, trust, anticipation, and surprise. Nonetheless, the narratives exhibit two significant sources of variation: narratives from the low financial resources, high academic preparedness subgroup reflected widely-varied experiences interacting with professors, and narratives from the low financial, low academic preparedness subgroup lacked any descriptions of positive student-faculty interactions.

The Changing Landscape Of Trademark Law In Tinseltown: From Debbie Does Dallas To The Hangover, John Tehranian, Mark Bartholomew Jan 2015

The Changing Landscape Of Trademark Law In Tinseltown: From Debbie Does Dallas To The Hangover, John Tehranian, Mark Bartholomew

Contributions to Books

This Essay, a chapter published in the book Hollywood and the Law (Palgrave Macmillan / British Film Institute, 2015), explores how courts have sought to balance the competing interests at stake when filmmakers make unauthorized uses of trademarks in their work and brand owners threaten liability for infringement. Using the seminal Rogers v. Grimaldi decision as a key pivot point, the Essay traces the remarkable change in approaches that courts have taken to First Amendment defenses in trademark cases in the past few decades. In presenting case studies of two opinions -- Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders, Inc. v. Pussycat Cinema, Ltd. …

The Carnivalesque And Grotesque Realism In Modernist Literature: The Final Novels Of Ronald Firbank And Virginia Woolf, Marlene Katherine Case Jan 2015

The Carnivalesque And Grotesque Realism In Modernist Literature: The Final Novels Of Ronald Firbank And Virginia Woolf, Marlene Katherine Case

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

Concerning the Eccentricities of Cardinal Pirelli by Ronald Firbank and Between the Acts by Virginia Woolf both liberate the text from the expected form to engage emotional awareness and instigate reform of societal standards. Employing Mikhail Bakhtin’s theories of the carnivalesque and grotesque realism as a means to create this perspective is unconventional; nevertheless, Firbank, predominantly misunderstood, and Woolf, more regarded but largely misinterpreted, both address sexuality and religion to parody what they believe to be the retrogression of civilization by narrating christenings, pageants, and other forms of carnival. Both novels forefront nonconformity, and the conspicuous influence of debasement is …

The Beliefs Of Advanced Placement Teachers Regarding Equity And Access To Advanced Placement Courses: A Mixed-Methods Study, Mirynne Igualada Jan 2015

The Beliefs Of Advanced Placement Teachers Regarding Equity And Access To Advanced Placement Courses: A Mixed-Methods Study, Mirynne Igualada

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

This mixed methods study of teachers' beliefs about Advanced Placement (AP) equity and access policies occurred in Sunshine County School District, a large south Florida school district that had received accolades for leading the nation in access and equity in AP. Drawing on social reconstructionism, this study framed AP as an acceleration mechanism with the potential to increase students' prospects for social advancement. These policies have resulted in a more diverse classroom experience through nontraditional student participation in AP courses. The purpose of this embedded case study was to examine the relationship between beliefs held by AP teachers in regard …

Zafè Neg Se Mistè: A Grounded Theory Study Of End-Of-Life Decision-Making For Haitian American Families In South Florida, Susan Charlotte Ladd Jan 2015

Zafè Neg Se Mistè: A Grounded Theory Study Of End-Of-Life Decision-Making For Haitian American Families In South Florida, Susan Charlotte Ladd

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

The purpose of this study was to investigate the process used by Haitians and Haitian Americans who must make healthcare decisions for a terminally ill family member. There is a large population of Haitians and Haitian Americans in South Florida and there has been no research regarding their decision-making process about end-of-life healthcare. The study design was descriptive, applying constructivist grounded theory methodology. Data were collected using semi-structured, face-to-face qualitative interviews. Data analysis and collection occurred simultaneously. Participants (n=12) were purposefully recruited, with 11 from a single, faith-based community. The findings resulted in six concepts: (1) imminent or actual death, …

Cultural Conversations From Iran To America, Setareh Ghoreishi Jan 2015

Cultural Conversations From Iran To America, Setareh Ghoreishi

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

This thesis uses graphic design to explore the experience of an individual attempting to bridge two countries’ distinctly different cultures: Iran and the United States. Each has a particular political relation to the other in history. I am using graphic design as a tool to compare specific and various aspects of the two cultures and how these aspects impact each other based on my personal experience. I use design to explore my place in between two cultures and as a way to make sense of the exchange or replacement of culture that I perceive. Another aspect of my thesis emphasizes …

Corporate Diversification: Organization Capital, Organic Growth, And Long-Term Performance, Garrett C. Smith Jan 2015

Corporate Diversification: Organization Capital, Organic Growth, And Long-Term Performance, Garrett C. Smith

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

Corporate diversification is a core topic in Financial Economics. The desire to better understand why a firm elects to diversify as opposed to increase in scale is the motivation of this dissertation. To accomplish this goal I test a number of dynamic models of corporate diversification, with similar predictions, to better understand the dynamic choice to diversify. I find that several previously untested models do indeed provide insight as to why a firm would diversify (Essay One). In particular two firm traits, firm talent which I use the proxy of organization capital and asset specificity which I use the proxy …

Food, Fantasy, And The Spectacle: The Role Of Food And Illusion At The Wizarding World Of Harry Potter, Erin T. Broemel Jan 2015

Food, Fantasy, And The Spectacle: The Role Of Food And Illusion At The Wizarding World Of Harry Potter, Erin T. Broemel

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

Each year over 300 million people visit theme parks, making them the major vacation destination worldwide. Theme parks are known for their elaborate spectacle, the creation of artificial realities through intricate immersive experiences including costumed characters, stage shows, and extravagant decor. Though many aspects of the theme park experience have been reviewed, little focus has been given to the role of food in the overall immersion, particularly how food extends the spectacle into a fantastical created reality. This study examined the function of food within a highly immersive theme park setting, and how it contributed to the overall illusion and …

Eminent Domain As Enclosure Movement: The Privatization Of Law Under Neoliberalism, Jeffery Kleeger Jan 2015

Eminent Domain As Enclosure Movement: The Privatization Of Law Under Neoliberalism, Jeffery Kleeger

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

Law is a means to an end. The state has always claimed it uses law as a tool to promote social order and progress (the Brazilian National Flag is an example). The use of law to force social change to facilitate capital accumulation for elites in society flies in the face of what the takings clause is supposed to stand for. This research examines the connection between economic development and public good. It focuses on takings because takings lie at the intersection between economics, politics, and social relations. Takings are justified by necessity and public good, but the claim isn’t …

Epistemology And Networked Governance: An Actor-Network Approach To Network Governance, Mariana G. O’Brien Jan 2015

Epistemology And Networked Governance: An Actor-Network Approach To Network Governance, Mariana G. O’Brien

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

This dissertation suggests that network governance theory may have reached an impasse, and in order to pursue its advance, new methods need to be used. It tests the viability of actor-network theory on providing new insights on network governance, which could contribute to the strengthening of network governance theory. The author suggests that actor-network theory may offer both an epistemology and ontology that intents to not impose current definitions and divisions of traditional social science. By doing so, actor-network theory focuses on the performance of associations rather than on the traditional categories of structures, institutions, individuals or groups -- characteristic …

Effect Of A Spiritually-Guided Intervention On Breast Self-Care Attitudes In Afro-Caribbean Women, Jacqueline S. Marshall Jan 2015

Effect Of A Spiritually-Guided Intervention On Breast Self-Care Attitudes In Afro-Caribbean Women, Jacqueline S. Marshall

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

Little is known about breast health behaviors in Afro-Caribbean women (ACW) residing in the United States, as they are often included in the collective group of African American women (AAW). The objective of this study was to determine the influence of a spiritually-guided intervention on breast health self-care (BHSC) attitudes in ACW residing in southeastern Florida using a concurrent triangulation mixed methods design. One hundred and seventeen women were recruited from three local south Florida Caribbean churches. Inclusion criteria included: (a) self-identification as Afro-Caribbean, (b) female aged 30 years or older, (c) living in the United States for at least …

The Significance For, And Impact Upon, Public Administration Of The Correspondence Theory Of Truth Or Veridicality, Derek Ray Slagle Jan 2015

The Significance For, And Impact Upon, Public Administration Of The Correspondence Theory Of Truth Or Veridicality, Derek Ray Slagle

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

The dissertation is about the significance for, and impact upon public administration of the correspondence theory of truth or veridicality, and its underlying epistemological assumptions. The underlying thesis is that, unduly influenced by the success of the natural sciences, and naive in accepting their claims to objectivity, many disciplines have sought to emulate them. There are two principle objections. Firstly, all other considerations aside, the supposedly objectivistic methodologies apparently applied to the explanation and prediction of the behavior of interactions of physical objects, may simply be inappropriate to certain other areas of inquiry; and more specifically objectivist methodologies are indeed …

Understanding How National Board Certified Secondary Mathematics Teachers Integrate Academic And Social Knowledge Of Students Into Their Practice, Karen Cook Jan 2015

Understanding How National Board Certified Secondary Mathematics Teachers Integrate Academic And Social Knowledge Of Students Into Their Practice, Karen Cook

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

This qualitative case study investigated how six National Board Certified secondary mathematics teachers integrate knowledge of students into their practice to create socio- academic spaces for learning. Individual audiotaped interviews were utilized to generate data about what knowledge these teachers had of their students, how they gathered this knowledge, and how this knowledge of students influenced their decisions related to curriculum and instruction. The data were used to form an understanding of the nature and function of the socio- academic spaces that teachers create in planning for and delivering instruction. The study revealed that as teachers interact independently with the …

A Critical Analysis Of First Generation Black Male College Students’ Perceptions Of Their Preparation For College Level Mathematics, Kyla L. Williams Jan 2015

A Critical Analysis Of First Generation Black Male College Students’ Perceptions Of Their Preparation For College Level Mathematics, Kyla L. Williams

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

President Obama’s 2014 “My Brother’s Keeper” initiative responds to the continuing educational disparities that the No Child Left Behind Act was intended to have addressed. The preoccupation with standardized testing and accountability over the past decade has revealed evidence of disparities in achievement between Black male students and their White counterparts. Critical Race Theorists have framed these persistent disparities as evidence of the opportunity gap and have advocated culturally responsive pedagogy that would facilitate students’ academic success.

Birch Roots And Bricks: Finding Home In The Pluralism Of Voice In Migration Novels Of Contemporary Europe, Dorothea Trotter Jan 2015

Birch Roots And Bricks: Finding Home In The Pluralism Of Voice In Migration Novels Of Contemporary Europe, Dorothea Trotter

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

Through a comparative literary study of Monica Ali’s Brick Lane and Olga Grjasnova’s Der Russe ist einer, der Birken liebt, this thesis concludes that although the migrant experience is heterogeneous and that integration is a difficult process that varies through the diversity of experiences, these experiences can be unified by the common way in which migrants learn to “belong” by connecting with voices of the past and present and by building and maintaining relationships that extend beyond the limits of place. In defending this argument, the thesis draws upon themes of Bakhtinian heteroglossia, nationalism and transnationalism, space, globalism, and migration.

A Feminist Cultural Study Of Identity, Hair Loss, And Chemotherapy, Celine Guillerm Jan 2015

A Feminist Cultural Study Of Identity, Hair Loss, And Chemotherapy, Celine Guillerm

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

The main aim of this dissertation is to discuss the way women negotiate the cultural meaning of hair loss, alopecia, as a result of undergoing chemotherapy, and to understand, accordingly, how cancer's cultural effects regarding women can be deeply different from those of men. Very few studies have been done about the cultural impact and resonance of alopecia. It is often regarded as "secondary" to other effects of chemotherapy. Because, in many cultures, head hair for women expresses or manifests attractiveness and power, to be bald is to be deprived of the ability to fit into society, whether in the …

Cognitive Implications Of Biculturalism: Impact On Entrepreneurial Intentions, Ratan Dheer Jan 2015

Cognitive Implications Of Biculturalism: Impact On Entrepreneurial Intentions, Ratan Dheer

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

Globalization has increased the number of individuals who identify with more than one culture. Studies in cultural psychology suggest that the manner in which bicultural individuals manage their dual cultural identities has important implications for them and for their host societies. While existing studies have examined the psychological and sociocultural consequences of biculturalism, only little attention has been paid to understanding its economic consequences. Importantly, the effect that managing dual cultural identities has on bicultural individual's entrepreneurial intentions has remained unexplored. Given the fact that entrepreneurship is vital to the economic success of nations and biculturals are said to play …

An Empathetic Approach To Information Design, Frederick J. Mccawley Jan 2015

An Empathetic Approach To Information Design, Frederick J. Mccawley

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

This thesis will explore the vital importance of empathy on the part of graphic designers when creating information graphics. Today’s over-mediated public expects a rich user experience that is emotionally engaging, and multi-sensory by nature. To meet the public’s need, graphic designers must accept the cognitive responsibility to be empathetic to the viewers’ relationship to the information, and not just the surface issues of form, media, and content.

Archaeological And Historical Investigations Of The Robert Newsom Farmstead (23cy497), Callaway County, Missouri, James Adam Halpern Jan 2015

Archaeological And Historical Investigations Of The Robert Newsom Farmstead (23cy497), Callaway County, Missouri, James Adam Halpern

Graduate Theses/Dissertations

Scholarly research on slavery in the U.S. has focused on large commercial plantations in the Old South. Yet a majority of slaveholders and nearly half of the enslaved lived in smaller slaveholding houses and family farms (Burke 2010:4). This study helps redress the dearth of research on small slaveholdings through study of the Robert Newsom Farmstead, or "Celia" Site (23CY497), located in Callaway County, Missouri. The research goal is to model the antebellum spatial organization of the landholding, thereby increasing our understanding of slavery at the Newsom site and on non-plantation slaveholdings generally. This was accomplished through collection and analysis …

Sisters Before The Fall, Heather Lanae Captain Jan 2015

Sisters Before The Fall, Heather Lanae Captain

Graduate Theses/Dissertations

This thesis comprises the first fourteen chapters of a fiction entitled "Sisters Before the Fall", which brings to the forefront extreme, yet, real abuses faced by women in the Middle East and the northeastern countries of Africa. Those abuses are the result of social, political, and cultural influences, and include general repression of women and girls, female genital mutilation, marriage of prepubescent girls, and the slave trade. A female American volunteer and a female Hispanic doctor meet these women in a humanitarian compound in western Sudan. As they work together to overcome challenges brought on by war, they realize they …

Icts And Technical Agency: A Case Study Of A Rural Brazilian Community, Lorena Melgaço, Katharine S. Willis Jan 2015

Icts And Technical Agency: A Case Study Of A Rural Brazilian Community, Lorena Melgaço, Katharine S. Willis

School of Art, Design and Architecture

This paper explores the role of information and communication technologies (ICTs) in rural, marginalised communities. We explore Feenberg's concept of technical agency in order to understand the ways in which technological capacity might contribute to community development. We discuss three conditions of technical agency as outlined by Feenberg: power, knowledge and appropriate occasion. We consider how this framework might enable an approach to understanding the role of ICTS in the particular socio-spatial contexts in marginalised communities. In order to test Feenberg's approach, we discuss a case study of a village in rural Brazil: Noiva do Cordeiro. The community is recognised …

The Relational Geographies Of Policing And Security, Richard Yarwood, Till Paasche Jan 2015

The Relational Geographies Of Policing And Security, Richard Yarwood, Till Paasche

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

AbstractThis paper considers the roles of policing and security in the geographies of everyday public and semi‐public space. We contend that while security is concerned with territory, policing relates to place. We consider the relationship between security and territory before examining the relationship between policing and place. In the final section, we argue that a relational view of space is needed to understand how practices of policing and security shape space and, in turn, the lives of people using it.
