Taking A Cue From The Heart: A Meta-Analysis Of Mindfulness-Based Interventions For Healthcare Providers, Adrian N. Murray

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

As the need for healthcare professionals continues to increase, the issue of improving provider self-care becomes ever more salient. One category of approaches to self-care, termed Mindfulness-Based Interventions (MBIs), has been proposed as particularly well suited to addressing the issues of impairment and self-care for healthcare providers. This study sought to synthesize, using meta-analysis, findings from the wealth of recent literature in this area in an effort to provide valuable information about the overall effect of such interventions, as well as the timing and structure necessary to receive benefit. Included are 32 studies that fulfilled the following selection criteria: (1) …

An Analysis Of The Reported And Unreported Baccalaureate Degree Recipients In Ipeds At A Large Public Research Institution, Mary Elizabeth Wallace

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

One of the challenges facing higher education today is to graduate undergraduate students in a timely manner. Graduation rates are reported to students, parents, and the general public as well as academic and political leaders. The rates are derived using different methodologies. The Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System (IPEDS) collects data annually by law from every institution offering federal financial aid in the United States. The "IPEDS reported" students are considered students who start in the fall semester, full-time, first-time in college, and graduate from the original institution (no transfers). The adult, part-time, returning, and transfer students, or "IPEDS unreported" …

Engaging With Qualitative Data Analysis: The Metaphor Of "Looking At Data Like A Landscape To Be Explored", Marleny M. Bonnycastle Jan 2015

Engaging With Qualitative Data Analysis: The Metaphor Of "Looking At Data Like A Landscape To Be Explored", Marleny M. Bonnycastle

The Qualitative Report

“Looking at data like a landscape to be explored” is the metaphor used by Susanne Friese in her new book entitled Qualitative Data Analysis with ATLAS.ti (2014). In it, Friese successfully guides new and experienced researchers to use ATLAS.ti as a computer-assisted tool to engage in qualitative data analysis. The book transcends from being a dry reading to become a companion for those who are living the journey of using different sources of data, mapping them and then integrated them into their analysis.

Wearing The Label Of Mental Illness: Community-Based Participatory Action Research Of Mental Illness Stigma, Jean M. Theurer, Nicole Jean-Paul, Kristi Cheyney, Mirka Koro-Ljungberg, Bruce R. Stevens

The Qualitative Report

Stigma remains an impediment to seeking and receiving the requisite care for mental illness. To enhance a local National Alliance for Mental Illness (NAMI) affiliate’s understanding of community members’ perceptions of mental illness and its associated stigma, a community-based participatory action research study was conducted. The study addressed the following research question: how do community members understand and experience the stigma associated with mental illness? Twenty-two participant-researchers wore mental illness labeled T-shirts around the local community, recorded their observations and reflections of this experience and recruited twenty-two community members for semi-structured interviews about mental illness stigma. Domain analysis of the …

Internationalization Of Counselor Education: Lived Experiences Of Us Counselors-In-Training Abroad, Cristen C. Wathen, David M. Kleist

The Qualitative Report

In response to globalization in the counseling profession and the incorporation of international immersion courses in counselor education programs, the purpose of this study is to understand the lived experience of counselors-intraining participating internationally in a study abroad course. The research question was: What is the experience of a counselor-in-training who has participated in a study abroad trip as a part of their training program? Utilizing van Manen’s phenomenological methodology (1990), the researcher explored the experiences of four counselors-in-training participating in an international study abroad course. Overall emergent themes included experiencing new contexts, emotions, and new learning with an emphasis …

Dating And Sexuality Among Minority Adolescents With Disabilities: An Application Of Sociocultural Theory, Kristen Faye Linton, Heidi Adams Rueda

Social Work Faculty Publications

Adolescents with disabilities, American Indians, Hispanics, and African Americans are more likely to experience victimization and pregnancy as teens. This study explored ethnic and racial minority youth with disabilities’ dating and sexual experiences from the perspectives of social workers using Vygotsky’s sociocultural theory. Thirteen in-depth interviews were conducted with master’s degree–holding high school social work practitioners. Social workers described family beliefs and practices, socioeconomic status, special education, historical influences, and resiliency as aspects of adolescents’ lives that impacted their dating and sexuality. Social workers’ dialogue concerning family beliefs and attitudes toward abusive relationships were interpreted as internally oriented signs used …

Child Sex Trafficking-Recognition, Intervention, And Referral: An Educational Framework To Guide Health Care Provider Practice, Cathy L. Miller Jan 2015

Child Sex Trafficking-Recognition, Intervention, And Referral: An Educational Framework To Guide Health Care Provider Practice, Cathy L. Miller

Nursing Theses and Dissertations

Awareness of the plight of children and adolescents who are sexually exploited and trafficked for financial gain has gradually garnered the attention of the public, law enforcement, and health care providers. The discussion is slowly changing to recognize these exploited children and adolescents as victims and not criminals. Marginalization of this population is slowly changing to advocacy. However, with awareness comes responsibility for the health care system to provide improved recognition, intervention, and referral of this population. Increased health care provider responsibility demands a scientifically based framework to guide the development of health care provider education programs. To date, there …

Faculty Scholarship

Over the past two decades, there has emerged a body of literature documenting a number of risk factors associated with Asian/Pacific Islander men who have sex with men’s unsafe sexual behaviors. This study aims to systematically review existing empirical studies and synthesize research results into a social–ecological framework using a mixed research synthesis. Empirical research articles published in peer-reviewed journals between January 1990 and June 2013 were identified in six databases, including PubMed, Ovid MEDLINE, PsycINFO, Social Work Abstract, CINAL, and Web of Knowledge. Both quantitative and qualitative studies were included. Two analysts independently reviewed the articles, and findings were …

Stress Reactivity To An Electronic Version Of The Trier Social Stress Test: A Pilot Study, Sage E. Hawn, Lisa Paul, Suzanne Thomas, Stephanie Miller, Ananda B. Amstadter

Psychiatry Publications

Social stressors that rely on the inclusion of confederates (i.e., Trier Social Stress Test, TSST) are often used in clinical laboratory research paradigms to elicit a measurable stress response in participants. Although effective, the TSST is labor intensive and may introduce error variance as a function of confederate race, gender, and/or response characteristics. The present study aimed to develop and validate an electronic version of the TSST (e-TSST). The primary aim was to compare the e-TSST to an e-neutral control condition; the exploratory aim was to compare the magnitude of stress response elicited by the e-TSST to that elicited by …

Between Autonomy And Alienation: Creating The Self Via Sex-Reassignment Surgery, Annthony M. Duffey

sprinkle: an undergraduate journal of feminist and queer studies

Upon a consideration of self-creation and the introduction of the gender binary a potential limiter of autonomy, sexQreassignment surgery (SRS) beckons significant reconsideration by the biomedical/ethical field, ranging from the transpersons who undergo it to the preoperative processes that oversee it. Autonomy does not underlie a majority of SRS on prevailing biomedical hypotheses; SRS is granted to those candidates who report symptoms of dysfunction and denied to candidates who do not confirm such suspicions. This research proposes that, upon his or her failure or refusal to demonstrate some understanding of the potentially limiting influence of the gender binary, a candidate …

Sexual Assault: Whose Fault Is It Anyway In A Rape Culture?, Grace Pappas Jan 2015

Sexual Assault: Whose Fault Is It Anyway In A Rape Culture?, Grace Pappas

sprinkle: an undergraduate journal of feminist and queer studies

Sexual assault has recently gained attention as a prevalent issue in American culture, particularly on college campuses. While in some places much is being done to raise awareness and end this form of gendered violence, too often fingers are pointed at possible causes rather than intertwined as hands held together in the fight against this injustice. Through an examination of empirical research, it is clear that the issue of sexual assault stems from and is perpetuated by a rape culture, a culture in which we are all a part. This paper argues that if we are to fight sexual assault, …

The Portrayal Of Bullying Behaviour In Childhood: An Examination Of Canadian And American Mass Print Parenting Magazines From 2000 To 2015, Olivia Gabrielli

Cultural Analysis and Social Theory Major Research Papers

As the social construction of bullying remains an important area of research, to date, much of the academic research has treated bullying within a psychological framework. This research project took a different approach towards bullying in childhood. From a sociological perspective, this study examined the portrayals of childhood bullying presented within various mass print parenting magazines. A social constructionist approach guided this media content analysis, while guiding questions were used to assess the data.

Results indicate that childhood bullies, victims, and bystanders are all affected by bullying episodes. It is characterized as a common issue, often occurring on the schoolyard …
