Building Legal Competency: Foundations For A More Effective Criminology And Criminal Justice Discipline, Claire Nolasco, Rolando V. Del Carmen, Kevin F. Steinmetz, Michael S. Vaughn, Aneta Spaic

Criminology and Criminal Justice Faculty Publications (Archived)

This article argues for the need to build legal competency in the discipline of criminal justice and criminology through incorporating law courses in its PhD program curriculum, whether as black letter law (i.e. criminal law, criminal procedure, courts), sociology of law, or socio-legal studies (i.e. law and society courses). Through requiring law courses as a necessary and integral part of the curriculum, and recognizing the mainstream impact of these courses, the discipline stands to enrich the field of legal studies in criminology and criminal justice. The discipline’s need and demand for law trained tenure track faculty with PhD credentials can …

The Myth Of The Unteachable: Youth, Race And The Capacity Of Alternative Pedagogy, Cathy R. Borck Feb 2015

The Myth Of The Unteachable: Youth, Race And The Capacity Of Alternative Pedagogy, Cathy R. Borck

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

My research consisted of three years of qualitative inquiry, including 62 interviews with members of the Department of Education, school administrators, teachers and students, as well as a yearlong ethnography at a transfer school that I chose because of its history of success with the city's hardest- to-reach youth. To my knowledge, mine is the first formal study of New York City transfer schools. "Transfer schools" are New York City's public alternative schools, which serve "over-age, under- credited" high school students (i.e. students who are "behind" in school). These students experience many challenges and interruptions to their education, including homelessness, …

Refugees And Relief: The American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee And European Jews In Cuba And Shanghai 1938-1943, Zhava Litvac Glaser

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Traditionally, pre-modern Jewish communities sensed an obligation to bind together to provide aid to Jews who found themselves in catastrophic situations; however, with the advent of modernity and the dissolution of Jewish communal authority, the fragmentation of Jewish communities, and the unprecedented stresses of the Holocaust, communal dynamics grew far more complex. The Jews of Cuba and Shanghai were two small and relatively remote communities overwhelmed by Jewish refugees fleeing the Nazis. At their request, the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee stepped in and provided both the funding and leadership that both of these locations so desperately needed.

The Jewish …

An overview of the PACTT Initiative, with specific attention to its core elements, is presented and examined in the context of Ecological Systems Theory. Secondary data was analyzed using logistic regression to measure the overall impact of the five PACTT elements, dosage of PACTT elements, and …

Piloting A Psychotherapy Group For Transgender Clients: Description And Clinical Considerations For Practitioners, Nicholas C. Heck, Leslie C. Croot, Jennifer S. Robohm Feb 2015

Piloting A Psychotherapy Group For Transgender Clients: Description And Clinical Considerations For Practitioners, Nicholas C. Heck, Leslie C. Croot, Jennifer S. Robohm

Psychology Faculty Research and Publications

The likelihood that a psychologist will work with a transgender client is greater today than ever before; however, many psychologists report being unfamiliar with the challenges faced by this population. Training programs provide minimal exposure to transgender issues by way of coursework and practicum experiences, and many barriers prevent transgender persons from accessing quality mental health care. The provision of group psychotherapy services in psychology training clinics may help reduce barriers to treatment, but there is little literature to guide professionals interested in facilitating such a group. In response, this article provides psychologists with a description of an experiential/process psychotherapy …

On The Persistence And Attrition Of Women In Mathematics, Katrina Piatek-Jimenez Jan 2015

On The Persistence And Attrition Of Women In Mathematics, Katrina Piatek-Jimenez

Journal of Humanistic Mathematics

The purpose of this study was to investigate what motivates women to choose mathematics as an undergraduate major and to further explore what shapes their future career goals, paying particular attention to their undergraduate experiences and their perceptions of the role of gender in these decisions. A series of semi-structured, individual interviews were conducted with twelve undergraduate women mathematics majors who were attending either a large public university or a small liberal arts college. This study found that strong mathematical identities and enjoyment of mathematics heavily influenced their decisions to major in mathematics. At the career selection stage, these women …

Barriers To The Utilisation Of Provisions Of The Zimbabwean Domestic Violence Act Among Abused Christian Women In Zimbabwe, Excellent Chireshe Jan 2015

Barriers To The Utilisation Of Provisions Of The Zimbabwean Domestic Violence Act Among Abused Christian Women In Zimbabwe, Excellent Chireshe

Journal of International Women's Studies

The Domestic Violence Act of Zimbabwe was enacted in response to an escalation in cases of domestic violence. In spite of the enactment of the Act, domestic violence continues and there is limited utilisation of the provisions of the law. This paper seeks to identify factors that militate against the utilisation of provisions of the Act by victims of domestic violence. Twenty-two Christian women who were abused by their male intimate partners participated in the study on which this paper is based. A qualitative design, influenced by the feminist perspective, was adopted for this study. Purposeful sampling was applied in …

Ecofeminism And Natural Disasters: Sri Lankan Women Post-Tsunami, Alyssa Banford, Cameron Kiely Froude

Journal of International Women's Studies

Women experience a host of negative consequences during and after a natural disaster. A variety of feminist theories have been used to explore this phenomenon. The aim of this paper is to posit the need for an ecofeminist perspective on analyzing women’s vulnerabilities post-natural disaster. The authors will discuss the history and branches of ecofeminism, highlighting their utility in exploring the intersection of race, class, and gender in the aftermath of disaster. An ecofeminist analysis of Sri Lankan women’s vulnerability in the wake of the 2004 tsunami will be used to illustrate the utility of the theory. Implications of using …

Objective

We examined associations of childhood physical and sexual abuse with risk of intimate partner violence (IPV). We also evaluated the extent to which childhood abuse was associated with self-reported general health status and symptoms of antepartum depression in a cohort of pregnant Peruvian women.

Methods

In-person interviews were conducted to collect information regarding history of childhood abuse and IPV from 1,521 women during early pregnancy. Antepartum depressive symptomatology was evaluated using the Patient Health Questionnaire-9. Multivariable logistic regression procedures were used to estimate adjusted odds ratios (aOR) and 95% confidence intervals (95%CI).

Results

Any childhood abuse was associated with …

Gertrude Von Petzold (1876-1952): Quaker And First Woman Minister, Claus Bernet Jan 2015

Gertrude Von Petzold (1876-1952): Quaker And First Woman Minister, Claus Bernet

Quaker Studies

Gertrude von Petzold was a pioneer in many ways: in England she was the first woman who got a post as a church minister, in Germany she was the first woman who qualified for a professorship in Germanics at Kiel University. At times when woman were not even allowed to vote, von Petzold pursued her academic career eagerly. Her ecumenical attitude resulted in membership within the Lutheran Church, the Unitarians and finally the Quakers.

The Fellowship Of Reconciliation's Propaganda And Theodora Wilson Wilson's Literary Contribution 1914-1917, Bert Den Boggende

Quaker Studies

During World War I Theodora Wilson Wilson, who shortly before the war had returned to her ancestral Quaker faith, made a unique contribution to the Fellowship of Reconciliation's (FOR) propaganda. Instead of the usual expository writings aimed at the well educated, she wrote simple stories directed at casual readers. They emphasised the kind of activity, 'doing', the FOR leadership had decided to curtail after an attempt at tramping in the Midlands in the summer of 1915 had resulted in a near riot. Her perspective reflected that of many Friends. Some very limited attention has been given to these stories, but …

The Early Positive Impacts Of Child Development Accounts, Sondra G. Beverly, Margaret M. Clancy, Michael Sherraden Jan 2015

The Early Positive Impacts Of Child Development Accounts, Sondra G. Beverly, Margaret M. Clancy, Michael Sherraden

Center for Social Development Research

This research brief highlights the findings of several studies from the SEED for Oklahoma Kids experiment, a large-scale policy test of universal, automatic, and progressive Child Development Accounts (CDAs). The universal and automatic components make the CDA in SEED OK inclusive by providing college accounts and savings to all treatment children. These studies primarily report the positive impacts of the CDA on nonfinancial outcomes (e.g., educational expectations, mother’s mental health, and child development). The impacts are often greater for disadvantaged children.

Volunteer Management Practices During Challenging Economic Times, Hillary Knepper, Maria J. D'Agostino, Helisse Levine Jan 2015

Volunteer Management Practices During Challenging Economic Times, Hillary Knepper, Maria J. D'Agostino, Helisse Levine

Journal of Public Management & Social Policy

Nonprofit organizations rely upon volunteers to facilitate their missions of meeting critical community needs. Since 2006, on average, 61.9 million Americans or 26.4 percent of the adult population volunteered every year through organizations delivering 8.1 billion hours of service worth approximately $162 billion to America’s communities (Bureau of Labor Statistics 2012; Corporation for National and Community Service 2010). Most recent data released by The Bureau of Labor in 2013 further suggest between September 2011 and September 2012 approximately 64.5 million people volunteered via an organization at least once. In light of high unemployment, donor fatigue, and slow economic growth, it …

Perceptions Of Collaboration And Service Integration As Strategic Alternatives: An Examination Of Social Service Nonprofit Organizations In The Late 1990s, Jennifer A. Wade-Berg, Vanessa Robinson-Dooley Jan 2015

Perceptions Of Collaboration And Service Integration As Strategic Alternatives: An Examination Of Social Service Nonprofit Organizations In The Late 1990s, Jennifer A. Wade-Berg, Vanessa Robinson-Dooley

Journal of Public Management & Social Policy

Nonprofit organizations (NPOs) have historically dealt with the problem of trying to build organizational capacity while simultaneously dealing with scarce resources. Consequently, practitioners and scholars continue to offer assistance to nonprofits in the development of techniques aimed at addressing these situations. Recent literature shows a push towards innovation, the use of new organizational tax structures, and/or the use of commercial revenue generating activities as plausible strategic alternatives for dealing with declining resources. While these techniques show promise, they typically are reserved for larger nonprofits (as measured by their funding base) and those nonprofits with missions that lend themselves for such …

Ethical Challenges In Cross-Cultural Field Research: A Comparative Study Of Uk And Ghana, Jones Adu-Gyamfi Jan 2015

Ethical Challenges In Cross-Cultural Field Research: A Comparative Study Of Uk And Ghana, Jones Adu-Gyamfi

African Social Science Review

Abstract: Research ethics review by ethics committees has grown in importance since the end of the Nuremberg trials in 1949. However, ethics committees have come under increasing criticisms either for been ‘toothless or too fierce’ (Fistein & Quilligan, 2012:224). This paper presents a personal account of my experience in obtaining ethical approval for my PhD study from a UK university and the ethical dilemmas encountered in the fieldwork in Ghana. In this paper I question whether strict adherence to ethical guidelines developed from western perspectives is useful in conducting research in non-western societies. As more academics are increasingly been mandated …

Recognizing The Influence Of Social Determinants On Hiv Risk Behaviors And The Need For Structural Interventions To Prevent Hiv In Women, Arlene Edwards Jan 2015

Recognizing The Influence Of Social Determinants On Hiv Risk Behaviors And The Need For Structural Interventions To Prevent Hiv In Women, Arlene Edwards

Journal of Health Disparities Research and Practice

The design and implementation of structural interventions may provide for simultaneous and longitudinal responses to prevention needs in multiple contexts as defined by social determinants, thus varied opportunities exist to respond to the HIV prevention needs of women. According to the CDC, in 2010, the rate of new HIV infections among black women was 20 times that of white women, and the rate among Hispanic/Latino women was 4 times the rate of white women. Additionally, 86% of HIV infections in women were attributed to heterosexual contact and 14% to injection drug use (CDC, 2012). These numbers are reflected outside the …
