Tracing Temporal Changes In The Human Dimensions Of Forest Insect Disturbance On The Kenai Peninsula, Alaska, Hua Qin, Courtney G. Flint, A. E. Luloff

Sociology, Social Work and Anthropology Faculty Publications

A rapidly growing literature on the human dimensions of forest disturbance by insects has emerged over the past decade. As a result, the diverse social and economic impacts of forest disturbances and their implications have become increasingly understood. However, little research has assessed the temporal dynamics of community experience, perceptions, and actions related to changing forest landscapes and risks. Using longitudinal survey data from 2004 to 2008, this study examines the changing human dimensions of forest disturbance in the context of Alaska’s Kenai Peninsula spruce bark beetle outbreak. Findings suggest ramifications of forest risks related to bark beetles were more …

Family Affairs Newsletter 2015-02-01, Zack Paakkonen

Family Affairs newsletter (2004-2016)

FAMILY AFFAIRS was a free, twice-a-month, social activities newsletter for the GLBTQI (gay/lesbian/bisexual/trans/queer/intersex) community, sent out around the 1st and 15th of each month. It covered the State of Maine only. The list was begun and maintained for many years by Jean Vermette in Bangor, and later operated by Zack Paakkonen of Portland. Over the years it evolved from a social activities newsletter into a business directory, classified ad service, and community bulletin board.

Material Hardship In Families With Children With Health Conditions: Implications For Practice, Patricia Stoddard Dare, Leaanne Derigne, Linda M. Quinn, Christopher Mallett Feb 2015

Material Hardship In Families With Children With Health Conditions: Implications For Practice, Patricia Stoddard Dare, Leaanne Derigne, Linda M. Quinn, Christopher Mallett

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications

Cross-sectional data from the third wave of a ten-year data collection initiative were used to assess the odds of experiencing four material hardships between families who have a child member with a limiting health condition, and families with children who do not have a child member with a limiting health condition. The odds of experiencing material hardship in families with more than one child with a limiting health condition were also assessed. In the multivariable models, having a child in the household with a limiting health condition increases the odds the household will be unable to pay bills, and have …

Catch 22: The Rising Concern Of Faith Being Removed From Counseling And The First Amendment Concerns Associated, Curtis Schube Feb 2015

Catch 22: The Rising Concern Of Faith Being Removed From Counseling And The First Amendment Concerns Associated, Curtis Schube

Northern Illinois University Law Review

This article addresses a growing concern for a religious counselor. State statutes in California and New Jersey have been passed, banning the practice of sexual orientation change efforts for minors. Counseling students are being discharged from their programs for "discriminating," leading some to believe that this is the future for licensed counselors. This article examines the recent statutory enactments, recent case law, the ACA Code of Ethics, and an analysis of the issue moving forward.

Estimating The Production Function For Human Capital: Results From A Randomized Control Trial In Colombia, Orazio P. Attanasio, Sarah Cattan, Emla Fitzsimons, Costas Meghir, Marta Rubio-Codina Feb 2015

Estimating The Production Function For Human Capital: Results From A Randomized Control Trial In Colombia, Orazio P. Attanasio, Sarah Cattan, Emla Fitzsimons, Costas Meghir, Marta Rubio-Codina

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

We examine the channels through which a randomized early childhood intervention in Colombia led to significant gains in cognitive and socio-emotional skills among a sample of disadvantaged children aged 12 to 24 months at baseline. We estimate the determinants of parents’ material and time investments in these children and evaluate the impact of the treatment on such investments. We then estimate the production functions for cognitive and socio-emotional skills. The effects of the program can be explained by increases in parental investments, emphasizing the importance of parenting interventions at an early age.

Perceptions Of Research Misconduct: Pilot Data From A National Survey, Anita M. Gordon, Helen Harton Feb 2015

Perceptions Of Research Misconduct: Pilot Data From A National Survey, Anita M. Gordon, Helen Harton

Faculty Work

Studies have shown that serious misconduct in academic research (e.g., data fabrication) is uncommon, whereas questionable research practices (e.g., courtesy authorship) occur on a fairly regular basis (Fanelli, 2009; John, Lowenstein, & Prelec, 2012). Yet limited research has been undertaken to understand why researchers engage in these behaviors (Martinson, Anderson, Crain, & DeVries, 2006; Mumford, Connelly, Murphy, Devenport, Antes, Brown, et al., 2009), in spite of the critical attention that misconduct cases bring from scientists, policymakers, and the public. As in other areas of human endeavor, understanding the complex causes of misbehavior is critical in formulating appropriate prevention structures or …

Judicial Patriarchy And Domestic Violence: A Challenge To The Conventional Family Privacy Narrative, Elizabeth Katz Feb 2015

Judicial Patriarchy And Domestic Violence: A Challenge To The Conventional Family Privacy Narrative, Elizabeth Katz

William & Mary Journal of Race, Gender, and Social Justice

According to the conventional domestic violence narrative, judges historically have ignored or even shielded “wife beaters” as a result of the patriarchal prioritization of privacy in the home. This Article directly challenges that account. In the early twentieth century, judges regularly and enthusiastically protected female victims of domestic violence in the divorce and criminal contexts. As legal and economic developments appeared to threaten American manhood and traditional family structures, judges intervened in domestic violence matters as substitute patriarchs. They harshly condemned male perpetrators—sentencing men to fines, prison, and even the whipping post—for failing to conform to appropriate husbandly behavior, while …

If You Move, You Lose: The Interstate Medicaid Obligation To Special Needs Adopted Children, Sharon Mccartney, Vicki Blohm, Daniel Pollack

Northern Illinois University Law Review

This Article presents the history of the adoption assistance programs of the United States and analyzes state Medicaid practice related to the federal statutory provisions that established the benefit and the Constitutional guarantees of the freedom of travel. It argues that the state practice of denying Medicaid to a child based on the state from which the child is adopted clashes with the Supreme Court's decision in Saenz v. Roe which held that the Equal Protection Clause does not tolerate a hierarchy of 45 subclasses of similarly situated citizens based on the location of their "prior residence." This Article posits …
