“I'Ll Do Whatever As Long As You Keep Telling Me That I’M Important”: A Case Study Illustrating The Link Between Adolescent Dating Violence And Sex Trafficking Victimization, Emily F. Rothman Scd, Angela R. Bazzi, Megan Bair-Merritt Apr 2015

“I'Ll Do Whatever As Long As You Keep Telling Me That I’M Important”: A Case Study Illustrating The Link Between Adolescent Dating Violence And Sex Trafficking Victimization, Emily F. Rothman Scd, Angela R. Bazzi, Megan Bair-Merritt

Journal of Applied Research on Children: Informing Policy for Children at Risk

Background: Approximately 10% of U.S. high school-attending youth are physically abused by a dating partner each year. Many sequelae of dating violence have been documented, but the dating violence literature is lacking information about commercial sexual exploitation as a possible outcome of an abusive dating relationship. Conversely, scholarship on sex trafficking victimization has documented that some girls are enticed into sex work by exploitative partners who initially pretend to be dating partners, but the research lacks specificity about why and how the girls become vulnerable to these destructive relationships. This case series chronicles the experiences of four women who were …

Implementing A Coordinated Care Model For Sex Trafficked Minors In Smaller Cities, Mary Burke, Heather L. Mccauley, Anne Rackow, Bradley Orsini, Bridget Simunovic, Elizabeth Miller

Journal of Applied Research on Children: Informing Policy for Children at Risk

Background

Addressing the social and clinical service needs of minors who have been sexually exploited remains a challenge across the United States. While larger metropolitan centers have established shelters and service provision specific for trafficked persons, in smaller cities and more rural settings, survivors of trafficking (especially minors) are usually served by multiple, disparate social service and health providers working across different systems. Sexually exploited minors present an even greater challenge due to intersections with child welfare and juvenile justice systems, histories of abuse by family that limit placement options, and limited services that address the complex medical, mental health, …

Using A Clinic-Based Screening Tool For Primary Care Providers To Identify Commercially Sexually Exploited Children, Kimberly S. G. Chang, Kevin Lee, Terrence Park, Elizabeth Sy, Thu Quach

Journal of Applied Research on Children: Informing Policy for Children at Risk

Introduction: Commercial Sexual Exploitation of Children (CSEC), which encompasses acts of domestic minor sex trafficking, is a hidden problem in the U.S. that affects an estimated 300,000 children. Significant health impacts to victims include violence, substance abuse, mental illness, sexually transmitted diseases, and unintended pregnancy. However, due to the covert nature of sexual exploitation, the lack of understanding among service providers and law enforcement, and complex psychological factors experienced by victims, identifying CSEC is a tremendous challenge. Primary care providers can play a critical role in identifying CSEC victims within clinical settings to help address this silent epidemic.

Objective: The …

The Commercial Sexual Exploitation And Sex Trafficking Of Minors In The Boston Metropolitan Area: Experiences And Challenges Faced By Front-Line Providers And Other Stakeholders, Wendy L. Macias-Konstantopoulos, Deanne Munroe, Genevieve Purcell, Kristina Tester, Thomas F. Burke, Roy Ahn

Journal of Applied Research on Children: Informing Policy for Children at Risk

Objectives: The commercial sexual exploitation of children (CSEC), including sex trafficking of minors, is considered a severe form of abuse and violence against minors. We use a public health lens to examine perceptions regarding the context and process of CSEC and sex trafficking of minors in the Boston area, the response of the health care sector, and opportunities to improve the health and well-being of exploited/trafficked minors.

Methods: Using case study methodology, we conducted 22 semi-structured qualitative interviews of 25 key anti-trafficking stakeholders active in the Boston area.

Results: Key informants identified CSEC involving boys, girls, and transgender youth as …

Letting Kids Be Kids: Employing A Developmental Model In The Study Of Domestic Minor Sex Trafficking, Hadar S. Schwartz Apr 2015

Letting Kids Be Kids: Employing A Developmental Model In The Study Of Domestic Minor Sex Trafficking, Hadar S. Schwartz

Journal of Applied Research on Children: Informing Policy for Children at Risk

As American society has become increasingly aware of the plight of sex trafficked American children, attention has shifted from delinquency to victimhood (Mitchell, Finkelhor, & Wolak, 2010) with a corresponding awareness of the trauma that victims endure. This reconceptualization is incomplete without a larger understanding of the developmental vulnerabilities that leave children uniquely susceptible to recruitment and exploitation. Since the average age of entry into the commercial sex trade within the United States is 12-14 (Estes & Weiner, 2001), an exploration of the particular vulnerabilities of young teenagers--separation from parents; the process of identity formation; yearning for love and attention; …

Lost In Incarceration: An Ethnographic Study Of Three Women Discovering Their Path Through Structural Violence And The United States Justice System, Paige Bluejacket

Collection of Engaged Learning

The United States has incarcerated more of its citizens than any other progressive nation worldwide. The female population of prisoners has dramatically risen over the past thirty years. Structural violence, childhood trauma, socioeconomic factors, education, and healthcare are all reasons for the rise in numbers of female inmates. I conducted an ethnographic study, collecting life histories of three women who have recently been released from Dallas County Jail. These women have also participated in a program provided through the jail called Resolana. I examine the circumstances that place these women in each major life situation and analyze how change can …

2014 Journalism Graduate Skills For The Professional Workplace: Expectations From Journalism Professionals And Educators, Bernard R. Mccoy

College of Journalism and Mass Communications: Faculty Publications

With 2015 graduations approaching, accuracy, ethical principles, and good news judgment were identified as top skills college journalism graduates should possess for the professional workplace, according to a national survey of journalism educators and professionals. There are sharp differences, though, between respondent groups over how well college journalism programs are doing preparing journalism graduates for journalism careers, as well as the perceived importance of social media, mobile, and digital reporting skills. The survey asked journalism professionals and educators to rank skills and experiences journalism graduates need for the professional workplace. Respondents included 665 professional journalism managers, non-managers, and educators. Respondents …

Becoming A Hacker: Demographic Characteristics And Developmental Factors, Kevin F. Steinmetz Apr 2015

Becoming A Hacker: Demographic Characteristics And Developmental Factors, Kevin F. Steinmetz

Qualitative Criminology (QC)

"Hackers are not defined by any single act; they go through a process of development. Building from previous research and through ethnographic interviews and participant observation, the current analysis examines characteristics which may influence an individual’s development as a hacker. General demographic characteristics are analyzed, the participants’ school experiences are discussed, and perceived levels of parental support and influence are defined. Finally, descriptions of first exposures to technology, the concept of hacking, and the hacking community are presented. The study concludes with theoretical implications and suggestions for future research."

Exploring The Cohesion-Performance Relationship In Inter-Professional Healthcare Teams, Jill Steiner Sanko

Open Access Dissertations

Teamwork and communication failures contribute substantially to healthcare associated errors which are cited to cost over $17 billion dollars a year in the U.S alone. Teams are being used more often to delivery care because they are thought to improve the effectiveness, efficiency of care, as well as decrease costs. Teamwork and communication are critical to patient safety however, the benefits of a team-based approach to deliver healthcare has not been fully realized. Improving the understanding of the factors that affect team successes and failures is needed to advance team functioning and decrease teamwork and communication associated errors. The influence …

Acupuncturists As Entrepreneurs: Experiences Of New Professionals Founding Private Practices, Susan Sloan Apr 2015

Acupuncturists As Entrepreneurs: Experiences Of New Professionals Founding Private Practices, Susan Sloan

Doctor of Management

The entrepreneurship aspects of private professional practice has been largely overlooked in both the literature and most graduate school professional programs, including acupuncture and oriental medicine (AOM). Because selfemployment in a private practice is the path for the majority of acupuncturists at the present time, they must exhibit entrepreneurial behaviors, and they receive little support from the profession. This research explored 12 new professionals’ experiences founding their private practices in depth using narrative methodology in order to gain insights to guide future research and interventions. Analysis focused on cognition/perception (C), social capital (S) and entrepreneurial learning (L) process aspects in …

Help-Seeking And Help-Offering For Teen Dating Violence Among Acculturating Mexican American Adolescents, Heidi Adams Rueda, Lela Rankin Williams, Julie L. Nagoshi Apr 2015

Help-Seeking And Help-Offering For Teen Dating Violence Among Acculturating Mexican American Adolescents, Heidi Adams Rueda, Lela Rankin Williams, Julie L. Nagoshi

Social Work Faculty Publications

Help-seeking sources, motivations, and barriers concerning teen dating violence are rarely co-examined alongside help-offering processes and messages, and both are understudied among minority youth populations. This study sought the perspectives of Mexican American adolescents (ages 15 to 17) concerning their preferences and experiences with both help-seeking and help-offering. Twenty focus groups (N = 64 adolescents) were divided by gender and by acculturation level to allow for group comparisons. Friends and supportive family members were primary sources of help, although adolescents voiced a number of barriers to help-seeking. The most prominent barrier was fear they would be told to leave …
