Recipes For Success: Comparing Ala-Accredited Mlis Programs, Mandi Goodsett Jun 2015

Recipes For Success: Comparing Ala-Accredited Mlis Programs, Mandi Goodsett

Michael Schwartz Library Publications

Discussion about the MLIS degree and what could be done to produce well-prepared new librarians for the workforce abounds in the current literature. As the ALA Committee on Accreditation re-evaluates its standards, and frustrated librarians continue to add to the over 150 comments on the Library Journal editorial "Can We Talk about the MLS?" by Michael Kelley, the time to re-evaluate the MLIS degree has arrived. In order to effectively move forward, however, a gap in the literature must be addressed: an overview of the MLIS as it currently stands is needed. This dataset presents information about the current requirements, …

Opportunism In Ugandan Ngos: A Randomized Field Experiment, Eric Reuben Smith Jun 2015

Opportunism In Ugandan Ngos: A Randomized Field Experiment, Eric Reuben Smith

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Corruption undermines the effectiveness of international development. The financial integrity of non-governmental organizations (NGO) can be improved by donor-to-organization contact, but foreign donors rarely travel to countries such as Uganda. This project involved a randomized design to compare the size of project bids by NGO management when approached by potential donors (foreigners) or donor representatives (Ugandan citizens). Local donor representatives were more likely to be denied information during an in-person visit than the foreigners visiting NGOs. Otherwise, foreign potential donors were provided with information that was the same as local representatives, except in 6 instances in which bids were substantially …

Law Schools And The Legal Profession: A Way Forward, Peter A. Joy Jun 2015

Law Schools And The Legal Profession: A Way Forward, Peter A. Joy

Akron Law Review

This essay proceeds in four parts. Part II briefly examines the disengagement of law schools from the legal profession both in much of the scholarship produced and through courses required for graduation. Part III analyzes why some state bar regulators are imposing admission requirements in response to law schools failing to prepare students better for the practice of law. Part IV discusses the types of bar admission requirements being considered. Finally, in Part V, I argue that rather than being reactive and resistant to change, law schools should be forward looking and incorporate changes that will not only better prepare …

The Family Caregiver's Experience: Examining The Positive And Negative Aspects Of Compassion Satisfaction And Compassion Fatigue Using A Stress Process Model, Susan Lynch Jun 2015

The Family Caregiver's Experience: Examining The Positive And Negative Aspects Of Compassion Satisfaction And Compassion Fatigue Using A Stress Process Model, Susan Lynch

Nursing ETDs

Family caregivers significantly contribute to the provision of health care for their family members. This complex care can result in stress that may lead to both positive and negative consequences for the caregiver. Current literature tends to focus on negative consequences such as caregiver burden. Therefore, compassion fatigue and compassion satisfaction are proposed as concepts that may better reflect the family caregiving experience. Compassion fatigue is comprised of two components; burnout and secondary traumatic stress. The purpose of this study was to examine the concept of compassion fatigue and compassion satisfaction among family caregivers and to explore the relationship between …

Oral Health Care Access In New Hampshire, Eleanor M. Jaffee, Joan Widmer, Lisa Speropolous Jun 2015

Oral Health Care Access In New Hampshire, Eleanor M. Jaffee, Joan Widmer, Lisa Speropolous

Carsey Publications

In this brief, authors Eleanor M. Jaffee, Joan Widmer, and Lisa I. Speropolous provide an overview of the current state of oral health care in New Hampshire. They report that although New Hampshire is rated above the national average on most measures of pediatric oral health, performance varies substantially by county and by region. Access to adequate oral health care for both children and adults is particularly challenging for low-income families in the sparsely populated northern region of the state. Programs that address oral health care access issues by bringing services to those with the greatest need, such as school-based …

Developing Safeguarding Services To Protect Children – What Are The Key Components?, Jenny Gray Jun 2015

Developing Safeguarding Services To Protect Children – What Are The Key Components?, Jenny Gray

Irish Journal of Applied Social Studies

This paper, drawing on UK and international experiences, suggests that the key components of an effective national system of services to safeguard children from being maltreated have to not only be in place but also functioning effectively in an integrated manner if they are to achieve their aims. The United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) provides a common international framework for all governments, organisations and professionals to work within. It should be incorporated into domestic legislation, which is supported by national frameworks and protocols that are underpinned by a commitment to multi-disciplinary, multi-agency working. Effective implementation …

Child Care System Reforms In Eastern And Central Europe And Central Asia: Why There Is A Need To Focus On Children Below Three Years, Jean-Claude Legrand Jun 2015

Child Care System Reforms In Eastern And Central Europe And Central Asia: Why There Is A Need To Focus On Children Below Three Years, Jean-Claude Legrand

Irish Journal of Applied Social Studies

UNICEF is supporting governments in Eastern and Central Europe and Central Asia to develop national child protection systems that effectively prevent and respond to violence, family separation and detention, including among most vulnerable groups. In particular, UNICEF supports child care reforms aiming at enforcing the right of children to live in a family environment. Ten years of complex reforms in the social sector were not translated into results for children as the rate of children placed in formal care has not declined during the last decade. In order to share a joint vision that every child must grow up in …

Looking For Long-Term Outcomes: What Early Interventions Are Needed For Children And Young People At Risk Of Maltreatment In England?, Samantha Mcdermid, Georgia Hyde-Dryden, Harriet Ward Jun 2015

Looking For Long-Term Outcomes: What Early Interventions Are Needed For Children And Young People At Risk Of Maltreatment In England?, Samantha Mcdermid, Georgia Hyde-Dryden, Harriet Ward

Irish Journal of Applied Social Studies

The Safeguarding Children Research Initiative (Davies & Ward, 2012) was a programme of fifteen studies commissioned by the Department of Health and what is now the Department for Education, each of which explored a different aspect of safeguarding children. This paper brings together the findings of these studies to explore the types of strategies that have been shown to promote positive long-term outcomes for children and young people at risk of maltreatment. The authors highlight the potential harm caused to children when they are exposed to maltreatment and demonstrate the range of interventions that have been developed to improve their …

School Psychologists' Knowledge Of And Attitudes Towards Transgender Students, Arielle Walzer Jun 2015

School Psychologists' Knowledge Of And Attitudes Towards Transgender Students, Arielle Walzer

Theses and Dissertations

Transgender students face harassment and discrimination in schools, and those who experience such maltreatment are at a higher risk of attempting suicide and other negative outcomes. The National Association of School Psychologists (NASP) has called upon school psychologists to be advocates for transgender students, yet school psychologists receive little or no training in this area. The Knowledge of and Attitudes Toward Transgender Students Survey was created and distributed to members of the New Jersey, Connecticut, Delaware, and Maryland state associations for school psychologists. Although previous studies suggest that a person's attitude toward transgender people is affected by age and gender, …

Substantive Parenting Arrangements In The Usa: Unpacking The Policy Choices, Margaret F. Brinig Jun 2015

Substantive Parenting Arrangements In The Usa: Unpacking The Policy Choices, Margaret F. Brinig

Journal Articles

Policy makers in the US currently debate whether to keep discretionary child custody standards, that is, “best interests of the child” clarified by some factors, or to move to a more rule-based system, such as a presumptive shared parenting regime. This article briefly sets out the problem, theoretical and evidence-based ways of approaching it, and some new results from a study of court documents from one US state indicating that a strong presumption of shared custody is associated with an increase in post-decree domestic violence. While presumptions or de facto rules should facilitate bargaining, these results may tip the balance …

Evaluating Campus Climate According To Resident Status, Francine Sandone Jun 2015

Evaluating Campus Climate According To Resident Status, Francine Sandone

Theses and Dissertations

Linked to positive student outcomes such as effective risk prevention and health promotion, decreased problem behavior, and increased likelihood for academic success, climate has become a buzzword in not only elementary and secondary education, but in higher education as well. Colleges and universities have followed the precedent of school climate research and have begun to explore and unveil characteristics that impact campus climate. However, previous research has been limited in not only the identity characteristics they assess, but also in the degree of comprehensive assessment for this complex concept. The purpose of this study was to investigate multiple dimensions of …

Family Affairs Newsletter 2015-06-15, Zack Paakkonen

Family Affairs newsletter (2004-2016)

FAMILY AFFAIRS was a free, twice-a-month, social activities newsletter for the GLBTQI (gay/lesbian/bisexual/trans/queer/intersex) community, sent out around the 1st and 15th of each month. It covered the State of Maine only. The list was begun and maintained for many years by Jean Vermette in Bangor, and later operated by Zack Paakkonen of Portland. Over the years it evolved from a social activities newsletter into a business directory, classified ad service, and community bulletin board.
