Factors Associated With Family Counseling Practices: The Effects Of Training, Experience, And Multicultural Counseling Competence, Amanda A. Brookshear
Factors Associated With Family Counseling Practices: The Effects Of Training, Experience, And Multicultural Counseling Competence, Amanda A. Brookshear
Counseling & Human Services Theses & Dissertations
The ACA code of ethics encourages the inclusion of family in the therapeutic process when doing so can be considered positive (ACA, 2014). Additionally, family dynamics are an important component of counseling for clients from diverse cultural backgrounds. A critical review of the literature reveals that there are differences between conceptual and physical inclusions of families in counseling. Counselors can use a family systems theoretical lens and or incorporate family-based interventions. The purpose of this study was to investigate how counselors include families in counseling and what factors are associated with family counseling practice. Variables assessed include training and coursework, …
The Role Of Diversity On Team Effectiveness In A Multinational And Multicultural Military Environment, Mustafa Utoglu
The Role Of Diversity On Team Effectiveness In A Multinational And Multicultural Military Environment, Mustafa Utoglu
Engineering Management & Systems Engineering Theses & Dissertations
The trend of deploying multinational coalition or alliance forces to respond to emerging threats in the past two decades has become a conventional approach. Beyond the advantages presented by coalitions and alliances, the literature suggests that multinational forces have raised a new set of challenges in achieving their mission: managing the demographic, functional, and cultural diversity introduced by the individuals from various nations that compose the coalition/alliance.
A large number of researchers have considered diversity a "double-edged sword" as they discovered that diversity could pose risks, as well as benefits, to teamwork. Although extensive research effort has been dedicated to …

Workplace Dignity: Communicating Inherent, Earned, And Remediated Dignity, Kristen Lucas
Workplace Dignity: Communicating Inherent, Earned, And Remediated Dignity, Kristen Lucas
Faculty and Staff Scholarship
Extant research on dignity at work has revealed conditions that contribute to indignity, employees’ responses to dignity threats, and ways in which employees’ inherent dignity is undermined. But while dignity – and specifically indignity – is theorized as a phenomenon subjectively experienced and judged by individuals, little research has privileged workers’ own perspectives. In this study, working adults reveal how they personally experience and understand meanings of dignity at work. I describe three core components of workplace dignity and the communicative exchanges through which dignity desires commonly are affirmed or denied: inherent dignity as recognized by respectful interaction, earned dignity …

Ethnographic Refusal As Research Method: Example From A Study Of A Family Court Child Custody Mediation Program, Alexandra Crampton
Ethnographic Refusal As Research Method: Example From A Study Of A Family Court Child Custody Mediation Program, Alexandra Crampton
Social and Cultural Sciences Faculty Research and Publications
Mediation is a dispute resolution process in which a third party neutral facilitates discussion towards amicable agreement. Parents in Wisconsin filing disputed claims in family court over child custody or physical residence must attend mediation before going back to court. I began research on the Milwaukee Family Court Child Custody Mediation program three years ago with anticipation of data collection challenges due to sensitivity of the topic and need for multiple research permissions. Multiple and ongoing permission is necessary given an ethnographic extended case study research design. This approach was chosen to analyze the meanings of mediation within larger social …

The iUTAH Household Survey was conducted in 2014 during a time when the State of Utah was initiating various activities aimed at charting a long-term strategy for securing Utah’s water future. Water is currently high on the state’s public policy agenda due to Utah’s rapid population growth and urbanization, future water supply uncertainties related to climate change, and the political challenges of allocating increasingly limited regional water supplies. In order to provide information relevant to water policy, planning and management, the survey focused on understanding residents’ water management practices, water experiences and concerns, as well as their support for various …

This article investigated the dimensionality, measurement invariance, and cross-cultural variations of social desirability. A total of 3,471 university students from 20 countries completed an adapted version of the Marlowe–Crowne scale. A two-dimensional structure was revealed in the pooled sample, distinguishing enhancement (endorsement of positive self-description) and denial (rejection of negative self-description). The factor structure was supported in most countries; medium-sized item bias was found in two denial items. In a multilevel analysis, we found that (a) there was more cross-cultural variation in denial than enhancement; (b) females tended to score higher on enhancement whereas males tended to score higher on …

Science And Charity: Rival Catholic Visions For Humanitarian Practice At The End Of French Rule In Cameroon, Charlotte Walker-Said
Science And Charity: Rival Catholic Visions For Humanitarian Practice At The End Of French Rule In Cameroon, Charlotte Walker-Said
Publications and Research
This paper explores the conflict between local expressions of Christian charity and new theories of scientific humanitarianism in the final years of French rule in Africa. Compassionate phenomena inspired by Catholic social organizing had transformed everyday life throughout French Cameroon’s cities and villages in the interwar and postwar years, and yet, in 1950, poverty, crime, poor public health, and social tensions remained prevalent. Seeking a more deeply transformative approach to social rehabilitation, ecclesiastical leaders in the Catholic Church in Europe and French foreign missionary societies in Africa partnered with international medical and scientific organizations in order to invigorate charity with …

Background: People with developmental disabilities (DD) are often not included as participants in research owing to a variety of ethical and practical challenges. One major challenge is that traditional measurement instruments may not be accessible to people with DD. Participatory research approaches promise to increase the participation of marginalized communities in research, but few partnerships have successfully used such approaches to conduct quantitative studies people with DD.
Objective: To use a community-based participatory research (CBPR) approach to create an accessible, computer-assisted survey about violence and health in people with DD, and to psychometrically test adapted health instruments.

Effects Of The Strong Kids Curriculum As A Targeted Intervention For Students At-Risk For Developing Depressive Disorders, Danielle D. Williams Psyd
Effects Of The Strong Kids Curriculum As A Targeted Intervention For Students At-Risk For Developing Depressive Disorders, Danielle D. Williams Psyd
All Student Scholarship
Children who show signs of depression are at greater risk of having depression as adults as well as developing comorbid conditions. A multi-tiered system of support (MTSS) approach is currently the best evidence-based method for addressing behavioral and mental health concerns in a school setting. At this time, few research-based interventions exist that adequately address internalizing behaviors such as those associated with depression. Strong Kids is an evidence-based social-emotional learning curriculum that can be used at both the universal and secondary levels of prevention. It is designed to address internalizing behaviors; however, it has only been tested as one chronological …
Global Church Growth Through Multicultural Mission Teams, Parnell M. Lovelace Jr.
Global Church Growth Through Multicultural Mission Teams, Parnell M. Lovelace Jr.
Great Commission Research Journal
The globalization of ministry outreach is emerging as the church is expanding its reach beyond the local community. As a result, many congregations have embraced multicultural mission team development. As models of leadership are capturing opportunities to develop strategic liaisons globally with various nations politically, educationally, financially, and socially, there appears to be an opportunity to implement or receive initiatives that mutually benefit both the hosting country and the serving organization. These opportunities are available to the local church or a consortium of local churches. The growth of the church and its impact is readily observed through the implementation and …

Risk And Resilience Factors Associated With Posttraumatic Stress In Ethno-Racially Diverse National Guard Members In Hawaii, Dawna D. Nelson, Julia M. Whealin, Rebecca Stotzer, Anthony Guerrero, Megan Carpenter, Robert Pietrzak
CLASS Faculty Research
This study examined risk and resilience factors associated with posttraumatic stress symptomatology (PTSS) in an ethno-racially diverse sample of Hawai׳i National Guard members comprised of Native Hawaiians, Filipino Americans, Japanese Americans, and European Americans. In the full sample, identifying as Japanese American and higher scores on measures of perceived social support and psychological resilience were negatively associated with PTSS, while Army Guard (vs. Air Guard) status and stronger family norms against disclosing mental health problems were positively associated with PTSS. Exploratory analyses of ethno-racial subgroups identified different patterns of within and between-group correlates of PTSS. For example, when controlling for …

Helping people solve the practical problems of everyday life while maintaining contemporary relevance describes the mission of Cooperative Extension. To achieve that mission, Extension professionals have increasingly relied on information gathered from stakeholders to identify relevant problems and potential educational solutions. The methods, efforts, and activities to understand people and their problems are collectively referred to as needs assessment. This article explores the history and evolution of needs assessment in Cooperative Extension, as well as in a broader educational context. While tracing needs assessment through the decades, this article examines the needs assessment opportunities and challenges faced by Cooperative Extension. …

Anna Moscowitz Kross And The Home Term Part: A Second Look At The Nation's First Criminal Domestic Violence Court, Mae C. Quinn
Akron Law Review
This paper seeks to inform current conversations about dedicated domestic violence courts by shedding light on Kross’s remarkable early efforts to treat domestic violence prosecutions differently from other criminal matters and handle them in a designated court part. The story of Kross’s Home Term Part – the first specialized criminal domestic violence court in New York and perhaps the United States—is an important chapter in the history of intimate violence policies in this country. Recognition of Home Term is crucial to any complete account and understanding of our criminal justice system’s renewed efforts at judicial innovation through specialized “problem-solving” courts. …
