Nebraska Rural Poll
Most rural Nebraskans have participated in community involvement activities but they have not been as involved in some political activities. However, most rural Nebraskans have spoken with their pocketbooks on political and social issues by either buying or boycotting products because of the social and political values of the company providing them. And, many rural Nebraskans have signed a written petition about a political or social issue and have contacted a local public official to express their opinion.
Certain groups are more likely than others to have participated in community and political involvement activities. While younger persons are more likely …

Functionalized Nanofibrous Materials For Water Purification, Rui Yang
Functionalized Nanofibrous Materials For Water Purification, Rui Yang
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
The world faces urgent problems related to global water pollution. New fast, efficient, green, and cost-effective purification technologies can play a crucial role in solving contamination issues and offering fresh water supplies. In this research, two of the most abundant natural polysaccharides, cellulose and chitin, are extracted from wood pulp and shrimp shells, respectively, by using a series of chemical/physical treatments to produce nanofibers of 5 nm to 20 nm in width and a few microns in length, and investigated as functional components in water purification membranes. These naturally occurring nanofibers were thiol-modified to improve their ability to adsorb heavy …

Swatting Political Discourse: A Domestic Terrorism Threat, Matthew James Enzweiler
Swatting Political Discourse: A Domestic Terrorism Threat, Matthew James Enzweiler
Notre Dame Law Review
This Note will attempt to address the question of whether or not incidents of swatting aimed at contrary political ideals meet the characterization of domestic terrorism in the post–9/11 era. In particular, there will be consideration of the extent to which treatment of political swatting as domestic terrorism is consistent with the maintenance of the delicate balance between public safety concerns and protection of the constitutional values of free speech and free expression. This Note will proceed in four parts. Part I will examine the growth of telecommunication manipulation practices from products of curiosity to an alarming means of intimidation …
Exclusion And Equality: How Exclusion From The Political Process Renders Religious Liberty Unequal, Philip Hamburger
Exclusion And Equality: How Exclusion From The Political Process Renders Religious Liberty Unequal, Philip Hamburger
Notre Dame Law Review
Exclusion from the political process is a central question in American law. Thus far, however, it has not been recognized how religious Americans are excluded from the political process and what this means for religious equality. Put simply, both administrative lawmaking and § 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code substantially exclude religious Americans from the political process that produces laws. As a result, apparently equal laws are apt, in reality, to be unequal for religious Americans. Political exclusion threatens religious equality. The primary practical conclusion concerns administrative law. It will be seen that this sort of “law” is made through …

Substance Abuse In Rural Appalachia: Responding To Community Needs, Samuel S. Faulkner, Cynthia A. Faulkner, Lynn Geurin
Faculty Research at Morehead State University
This paper presents the multi-year collaboration between Social Work faculty and community stakeholders in a rural Appalachian region to address the community needs generated by the high rate of substance abuse. A needs assessment was administered to substance abuse counselors, child protection workers, and intimate partner violence workers in twenty eight counties. Outcomes developed from the survey findings include: offering Substance Abuse Certification classes; developing a minor in Substance Abuse Counseling; and educating middle and high school students on the consequences of substance use/abuse.

Prisonland: Environment, Society, And Mass Incarceration On New York's Northern Frontier, 1845-1999, Clarence Jefferson Hall
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
My dissertation explores the social experience and environmental politics of mass incarceration in five communities in New York's Adirondack Park, with a focus on the period 1975-1999. Historians, sociologists, and criminologists have enhanced our understanding of criminal law and its impacts on lawbreakers, their families, and communities. By the same token, environmental historians have expanded our knowledge of the dynamic forces that contributed to the making of parks and recreational spaces across the United States. With rare exceptions, scholars in these fields have left unexplored one of the consequences of postindustrial decline, namely, the mass incarceration of predominantly urban, non-white …

Public Video Surveillance And The Separation Of Powers, Lianhan Zhang
Public Video Surveillance And The Separation Of Powers, Lianhan Zhang
Maurer Theses and Dissertations
The thesis focuses on the response from the United States government on new challenges brought by the public video surveillance, in particular the privacy threat. Regarding regulating public video surveillance, the United States has gone on a different path, either from Britain with its similar political system or from China with a totally different one. The three branches of government in the U.S. are deadlocked and unable to take any meaningful actions. The Supreme Court, which is in a strong position to set national and uniform standards for privacy protection, has not found a way to break away from its …
Exploration Of The Current State And Directions Of Dynamic Ridesharing, Joseph J. Di Gianni
Exploration Of The Current State And Directions Of Dynamic Ridesharing, Joseph J. Di Gianni
Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects
Dynamic ridesharing (DRS) is an emerging transportation service based on the traditional concept of shared rides. DRS makes use of web-based real-time technologies to match drivers with riders. Enabling technologies include software platforms that operate on mobile communication devices and contain location-aware capabilities including Global Positioning Systems (Agatz, Erera, Savelsberg, & Wang, 2012). The platforms are designed to provide ride-matching services via smartphone applications differing from early systems that used non-real time services such as internet forums, or telecommunications, where responses were not immediate.
The study of DRS is important when considering its role as an emerging transportation demand management …
The Road Rage And Aggressive Driving Dichotomy: Personality And Attribution Factors In Driver Aggression, Kathryn Elizabeth Schafer
The Road Rage And Aggressive Driving Dichotomy: Personality And Attribution Factors In Driver Aggression, Kathryn Elizabeth Schafer
HIM 1990-2015
Aggressive driving is not clearly and consistently defined in the literature, neither in terms of the specific behaviors chosen for inclusion nor the degree to which the emotional state of the driver is taken into account. Principally, the aim of this current research is to determine the extent to which aggressive driving and road rage overlap. This will be accomplished primarily by applying two well-supported dichotomies in aggression research: hostile/instrumental and impulsive/premeditated. Relevant personality traits will also be measured to help discern the aggressive driving- road rage overlap and to explore secondary areas of interest, such as sex and age …

Corruption And Criminal Sentencing Dispositions In China, Qingting Hu
Corruption And Criminal Sentencing Dispositions In China, Qingting Hu
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Corruption is a prevalent crime worldwide. In China, it is drawing increased attention because the current administration is making intensified efforts to fight corruption. Despite its importance, empirical research on the characteristics and sentencing dispositions of corruption cases is rare. Based on 343 corruption cases, and using the focal concerns theory of sentencing as an interpretive framework, this study examines the main corruption offense and offender characteristics and the sentencing of corruption offenders. It also tests several specific hypotheses linked to the focal concerns theory: (1) If a case has characteristics indicating higher blameworthiness (e.g., higher amount of property involved), …
Single-Gender Educational Environments Serving African American Males: A Strategy For Closing The Achievement Gap, Angela P. Green
Single-Gender Educational Environments Serving African American Males: A Strategy For Closing The Achievement Gap, Angela P. Green
Education Doctoral
Student achievement data reveal that a disproportionate number of African American males are failing in school, placed in special-education classes, suspended or expelled from school, or incarcerated. Males of color factor substantially in the analysis of the achievement gap and its impact on economic and social development. The purpose of this quantitative study was to investigate whether single-gender environments had a significant impact on the academic performance of African American males in a public, urban middle school. The application of several theories guided this work: The African American male theory, ecological systems theory, critical race theory, and oppositional culture theory. …

The Dynamics Of Human And Rattlesnake Conflict In Southern California, Aaron Grant Corbit
The Dynamics Of Human And Rattlesnake Conflict In Southern California, Aaron Grant Corbit
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Human-rattlesnake conflict occurs when rattlesnakes are discovered in human-dominated areas and are deemed to pose an unacceptable risk to humans because of their venomous bite. In this dissertation, I investigated the nature of this conflict from the perspectives of both the behavioral and survival risks posed to rattlesnakes and the medical risks posed to humans. In the first of three studies, I investigated the effects of short- and long-distance translocation (SDT and LDT) of nuisance wildlife as a way of mitigating conflict between humans and naturally occurring Red Diamond Rattlesnakes (Crotalus ruber) near residential development in southern California. Snake activity …

Public Danger, James Dawson
Public Danger, James Dawson
Cardozo Law Review
This Article provides the first account of the term "public danger," which appears in the Grand Jury Clause of the Fifth Amendment. Drawing on historical records from the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, the Article argues that the proper reading of "public danger" is a broad one. On this theory, "public danger" includes not just impending enemy invasions, but also a host of less serious threats (such as plagues, financial panics, jailbreaks, and natural disasters). This broad reading is supported by constitutional history. In 1789, the first Congress rejected a proposal that would have replaced the phrase "public danger" in the …
Privacy Preservation In A Hybrid Multi Mesh-Lte Ami Network For Smart Grid, Ozan Cakmak
Privacy Preservation In A Hybrid Multi Mesh-Lte Ami Network For Smart Grid, Ozan Cakmak
Theses
While the newly envisioned Smart(er) Grid (SG) will result in a more efficient and reliable power grid, its collection and use of fine-grained meter data has widely raised concerns on consumer privacy. While a number of approaches are available for preserving consumer privacy, these approaches are mostly not very practical to be used due to two reasons: First, since the data is hidden, this reduces the ability of the utility company to use the data for distribution state estimation. Secondly and more importantly, the approaches were not tested under realistic wireless infrastructures that are currently in use. In this thesis, …
