Creswell Policing Project Final Report, Portland State University. Hatfield School Of Government. Center For Public Service, Kent Robinson, Robert Winthrop, Rachel Sykes, Rebecca Craven
Center for Public Service Publications and Reports
The Center for Public Service worked with the City of Creswell, Oregon to assess their current policing arrangements and service demand, and to develop a series of options for police services. Creswell is a small city of about 5,000 just south of Eugene, Oregon. Creswell currently purchases its police services from the Lane County Sheriff under an annual intergovernmental agreement (IGA). Citizens in the community have challenged this model and proposed the establishment of a city police department. This study developed scenarios and cost analysis for several options including a city police department, an independent public safety special district, and …

City Of Beaverton: Review Of Boards, Commissions And Committees In Municipal Governments, Portland State University. Hatfield School Of Government. Center For Public Service, Masami Nishishiba, Stephanie Hawke
Center for Public Service Publications and Reports
The City of Beaverton currently has 18 boards, commissions and special committees that are made up of Beaverton residents appointed by the mayor, and coordinated by the City of Beaverton’s Neighborhood Program.
The City of Beaverton therefore commissioned a study, to be carried out by the Center for Public Service (CPS) research team, which includes the review of selected number of cities in Oregon, Washington, and California that are similar to Beaverton. The intent of this study is to inform the City about trends and recent changes that are being adopted by boards and commissions in other cities, and make …
School Design To Promote Physical Activity, Jeri Brittin
School Design To Promote Physical Activity, Jeri Brittin
Theses & Dissertations
Increasing children’s physical activity (PA) at school is a national focus to address childhood obesity. Research has demonstrated associations between school built environments and students’ PA, but has lacked a comprehensive synthesis of evidence. Chapter 1 presents new evidence-, theory-, and practice-informed school design guidelines, including evidence substantiality ratings, to promote PA in school communities. These guidelines delineate strategies for school designers, planners, and educators to create K-12 school environments conducive to PA. They also engage public health scientists in needed transdisciplinary perspectives.
There have been few longitudinal studies to verify causal relationships between the school built environment and PA. …
Happy Landings: The Aviation Life Of Purdue University’S Ralph S. Johnson, Matthew D. Meyer
Happy Landings: The Aviation Life Of Purdue University’S Ralph S. Johnson, Matthew D. Meyer
The Journal of Purdue Undergraduate Research
Purdue University has enjoyed a rich and vibrant association with aviation, ranging from the work of Amelia Earhart to the achievements of Neil Armstrong. Through their dedication, its graduates have become the engineers, the aviators, and the astronauts who have helped to make American history. One such graduate who worked tirelessly to improve aviation was Ralph S. Johnson. A native of Goodland, Indiana, Johnson graduated from Purdue with a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering in 1930, and he returned in 2008 to receive an honorary doctorate in aeronautical engineering. From the time he left Purdue to the time he returned, …

Small Satellite Conference
From canyons to glaciers, from geology to astrobiology, the amount of exciting surface science awaiting us at Mars greatly outstrips available mission opportunities. Based on the thrice-flown Aerospace Corporation Earth Reentry Breakup Recorder (REBR), we present a method for accurate landing of small instrument payloads on Mars, utilizing excess cruise-stage mass on larger missions. One to a few such microlanders might add 1-5% to the cost of a primary mission with inconsequential risk. Using the REBR and JPL Deep Space 2 starting points for a passively stable entry vehicle provides a low mass and low ballistic coefficient, enabling subsonic deployment …

(Re)Connecting With Listeners: How Radio Stations Are Reaching Beyond The Dial (And Their Competitors) To Connect With Their Audience, Alyxandra Sherwood
Theses
Radio has a history of adapting to new technologies to spread its signal farther and more efficiently to a larger audience. With the emergence of social media, the audience has begun to use non-traditional media channels to reach back and out to each other, thus by-passing traditional media outlets such as radio. Prior studies examined how the audience has shifted its daily routine to incorporate new technology. The present study sought to determine to what extent radio stations in New York State have adapted to use non-traditional media channels, how often they update those channels, and if revenue type had …

Loss, Hope, And Redemption: The Consequences Of Methamphetamine Use In A Sample Of Incarcerated Women, Mikhial Vincent Gunderman
Dissertations
This dissertation examines the consequences of methamphetamine use in a sample of 40 incarcerated women who were court-ordered to participate in a correctional drug and alcohol treatment program in Missouri. Using interview data from this sample, I examine their perceptions of the consequences of their methamphetamine use. The negative consequences I focus on include experiences of violence, damage to interpersonal relationships, and more personal consequences related to health, employment, housing, and the criminal justice system. In this pursuit, I explore the following research questions: 1) What is the relationship between the accumulation of negative consequences and continued and/or increased involvement …

The Subject Was Standards: The Federal Government And Safety In The 1940'S - And 1970'S, Judy Jackson
Akron Law Review
THE MAY, 1976 issue of Trial magazine has emblazoned across its cover "The Hazardous Products Jungle". The cover shows a bicycle, chain saw, stove, vacuum cleaner, TV set, football helmet and other consumer products engulfed in Henri Rousseau-like jungle foliage. Such a cover, with its implication that many consumer products presenting unreasonable risks remain on the market over three years after passage of the Consumer Product Safety Act of 1972 (CPSA), epitomizes the general disappointment with the performance of the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), the independent regulatory agency created by the 1972 Act to protect the public against …

Town Of Barnstable V. O’Connor, Taylor R. Thompson
Town Of Barnstable V. O’Connor, Taylor R. Thompson
Public Land & Resources Law Review
The United States Circuit Court of the First Circuit’s decision in Town of Barnstable v. O’Connor reignites a hotly debated offshore wind plant proposal. The First Circuit held that the Ex parte Young exception to the Eleventh Amendment applied because the complaint alleged an ongoing violation of federal law and the relief sought was prospective. The court did not discuss the merits of the claim, so the fight against the proposed wind plant powers on.
Screening The Commercial Motor Vehicle Driver For Sleep Apnea, Dianna Ohlman
Screening The Commercial Motor Vehicle Driver For Sleep Apnea, Dianna Ohlman
Dissertations
Abstract The transportation industry has the third highest occupational risk for death and disability (BLS, 2010) with 7% of Commercial Motor Vehicle Drivers (CMVD) falling asleep while driving (NHTSA, 2006). One contributing factor may be undiagnosed Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) (Tregear et al, 2009). In 2006, a Joint Task Force (JTF) published screening recommendations for OSA, which led to a change in the Department of Transportation screening practices within a local Occupational Medicine clinic. The purpose of this study was to: (a) determine what percentage of drivers having had a positive clinical screening examination (met two of three objective measures) …

Respondent-Driven Sampling: Evaluating The Effects Of The Cure Violence Model With Neighborhood Surveys, Kwan Lamar Blount-Hill, Jeffrey A. Butts
Publications and Research
This report gives insight into how researchers at the John Jay Research and Evaluation Center used Respondent-Driven Sampling (RDS) to measures changes in violence-related attitudes and values of young men (age 18-30) in at-risk neighborhoods and compares areas with and without Cure Violence programs. The RDS method allows researchers to reach difficult-to-recruit populations and helps to increase the credibility of the study.
