Spectroscopic Analysis Of The Kinetics Of Host-Guest Chemistry Abstract, Charles M. Sayger Oct 2015

Spectroscopic Analysis Of The Kinetics Of Host-Guest Chemistry Abstract, Charles M. Sayger

Fall Interdisciplinary Research Symposium

Host-guest chemistry refers to the chemistry in which a host and a guest molecule come together to form an inclusion complex. These complexes are utilized in numerous fields, including pharmaceuticals, agriculture, and cosmetics. This study focuses on the kinetic and thermodynamic behavior of a guest molecule, Brooker's merocyanine, in β-cyclodextrin and its different derivatives (the hosts) at a fundamental level in an attempt to increase stability of the complexes. UV-Vis spectroscopy was used to study the kinetic stability of Brooker's merocyanine's unique, energy dependent isomerization pathway inside the cavity of the host molecule in solution. It was found that when …

A Comprehensive Comparative Assessment Of Road Safety In Developed Countries, Hamed Ahangari Oct 2015

A Comprehensive Comparative Assessment Of Road Safety In Developed Countries, Hamed Ahangari

Doctoral Dissertations

One of the most significant costs associated with automobile travel is the number of road accidents and fatalities that this type of transportation incurs. Road fatalities in almost all developed countries have decreased over the last four decades. However, the rate of change varies tremendously from country to country. The discrepancy in road fatality records has been widely noted but there is no comprehensive sense of the contributing factors. Accordingly, the overall goal of this study is to develop a more comprehensive understanding of disparities in road fatality, and to assess the extent to which various potential contributing factors affect …

Work Overload And Turnover Intention Of Junior Auditors In Greater Jakarta, Indonesia, Andika Pradana, Imam Salehudin Oct 2015

Work Overload And Turnover Intention Of Junior Auditors In Greater Jakarta, Indonesia, Andika Pradana, Imam Salehudin

The South East Asian Journal of Management

This paper aims to analyze how work overload influences turnover intentions of newly hired junior auditors in public accounting offices. Job satisfaction, work related stress and work life conflicts are used as mediating variables between work overload and turnover intention. This study employed 141 auditors from several accounting firms operating in the Greater Jakarta region. The sample was selected using purposive sampling. Three mediation hypotheses were tested using Structural Equation Modeling (SEM). The results show that work overload has a significant effect on increasing turnover intention through both job satisfaction and work related stress. In comparison, work overload does not …

'At-Risk' Places: Inequaties In The Distribution Of Environmental Stressors And Prescription Rates Of Mental Health Medications In Glasgow, Scotland, Juliana A. Maantay, Andrew Maroko Oct 2015

'At-Risk' Places: Inequaties In The Distribution Of Environmental Stressors And Prescription Rates Of Mental Health Medications In Glasgow, Scotland, Juliana A. Maantay, Andrew Maroko

Publications and Research

Using geospatial analytical methods, this study examines the association between one aspect of the built environment, namely, the concentration of vacant and derelict land (VDL), and the prevalence of mental health disorders (using the proxy variable of mental health medication prescription rates) in Glasgow, Scotland. This study builds on our previous research, which demonstrated the spatial correspondence between the locations of VDL in Glasgow and several physical health outcomes. Numerous studies of other locales have found similar correspondence between different elements of the built environment and various health outcomes. This is the first study of its kind to look at …

Passive Symmetry In Dynamic Systems And Walking, Haris Muratagic Oct 2015

Passive Symmetry In Dynamic Systems And Walking, Haris Muratagic

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The ubiquitous nature of symmetry lends itself to be taken for granted, however the breath of research on symmetry encompasses several disciplines. In engineering, studies centered on symmetry often address issues in dynamic systems theory, robotics, and gait rehabilitation. This thesis presents findings on two specific topics dealing with passively induced symmetry; dissimilar rotating systems and human gait. Past studies on passive symmetry in dynamic systems often incorporate physical coupling or a controller. This thesis presents a technique to passively induce symmetry between two dissimilar systems that are not physically connected. This work also presents a human gait study consisting …

The Cultivation Of Eating Disorders Through Instagram, Kendall O'Brien Oct 2015

The Cultivation Of Eating Disorders Through Instagram, Kendall O'Brien

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

A profusion of research has been dedicated to the effects of new media on body image. In an attempt to explain the inflation of eating disorders, several researchers have turned to the cultivation theory, postulating that increased interaction with these medias will lead to internalizations of the messages they disseminate. The over presence of extremely thin models and actresses can create a new reality for media users, who begin to equate thinness with beauty, power, femininity and happiness. While an abundance of research has delved into the impact of this thin ideal through television and magazines, the Internet as a …

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

This case study reports on a programmatic decision to require a credit-bearing course that was made by Faculty in Residence (FIR), including its implementation and results over a two-year period from 2010-2012. The focus is on FIR and on the impact of their decision upon the students enrolled in their Living Learning Communities (LLCs). The credit-bearing course was a Kinesiology Activities class taken by all seven LLCs at Boise State University. Anonymous feedback from students was obtained via end of semester surveys; results were used to improve the course. Survey feedback was analyzed to assess the value students perceived to …

Kawm Ntawv Qib Siab Understanding The Psychosociocultural Educational Experiences Of Hmong American Undergraduates, Mariko M. Lin, Pa Her, Alberta M. Gloria

Journal of Southeast Asian American Education and Advancement

Using a psychosociocultural framework, this study examined the educational experiences of 85 Hmong American undergraduates attending a predominantly-White university. Differences in class standing indicated that upper-division students reported higher confidence in college-related tasks than their lower-division counterparts, yet the upper-division students perceived a less-welcoming university environment that was incongruent with their cultural values than the lower-division undergraduates. Peer support, college self-efficacy and cultural congruity were salient variables in understanding Hmong American undergraduate’s educational experiences. The study’s limitations, future research directions, and implications for college administrators and faculty are discussed.
