Strengthening Executive Function Development For Students With Add, Lori Desautels

Scholarship and Professional Work – Education

What are the root causes of Attention Deficit Disorder in our children and youth, and how do we address these challenges? According to the National Center for Disease Control and Prevention, 11 percent of children in the United States age 4-17 (6.4 million) have been diagnosed with ADHD as of 2011.

Dr. Russell Barkley, clinical professor of psychiatry at the Medical University of South Carolina and medical expert in ADD, shares that this disorder is primarily about emotional regulation and self-control. It is not just about inattention, impulsivity, and hyperactivity. Emotional regulation, which is foundational to social, emotional, and …

Understanding Student Motivation And Strategic Engagement In Computer Science And Stem Courses, Duane F. Shell, Leen-Kiat Soh Oct 2015

Understanding Student Motivation And Strategic Engagement In Computer Science And Stem Courses, Duane F. Shell, Leen-Kiat Soh

Discipline-Based Education Research Group Speaker Series

Students’ motivation and strategic engagement have been identified as playing crucial roles in their success in STEM and CS classes. Numerous motivational constructs have been identified including goals, instrumentality of the course, mindsets, emotional/affective reactions, and self-efficacy. These are thought to motivate students’ to achieve and to drive the self-regulation and engagement necessary for student-centered learning. Despite sometimes lengthy histories of research in these constructs and behaviors, there are still many questions about how students are motivated in their courses and how they can become effective self-directed, engaged learners. This talk will discuss research findings from five years of classroom …

Using Auditory Feedback To Teach Dance Skills To Adults With Intellectual Disabilities, Aracely Abreu

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the use of auditory feedback for teaching individuals with intellectual disabilities the “Mississippi Cha Cha Slide.” Participants consisted of six males ages 35 to 61. During baseline, line dance skills were low for all participants. During the auditory feedback intervention, the trainer used a clicker to reinforce dance steps and forward chaining to chain movements into a sequence. Once auditory feedback was implemented, line dance skills increased substantially for all participants. Generalization assessments for four of the participants resulted in performance levels similar to baseline and demonstrate the need for future training …

With Marriage On The Decline And Cohabitation On The Rise, What About Marital Rights For Unmarried Partners?, Lawrence W. Waggoner

Law & Economics Working Papers

Part I of this paper uses recent government data to trace the decline of marriage and the rise of cohabitation in the United States. Between 2000 and 2010, the population grew by 9.71%, but the husband and wife households only grew by 3.7%, while the unmarried couple households grew by 41.4%. A counter-intuitive finding is that the early 21st century data show little correlation between the marriage rate and economic conditions. Because of the Supreme Court’s decision in Obergefell v. Hodges (2015), same-sex marriage is now universally available to same-sex couples. Part I considers the impact of same-sex marriage on …

Pottery Exchange And Interaction At The Crystal River Site (8ci1), Florida, Kassie Christine Kemp Oct 2015

Pottery Exchange And Interaction At The Crystal River Site (8ci1), Florida, Kassie Christine Kemp

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The Crystal River site (8CI1) is a Woodland-period mound (ca. 1000 BC to AD 1050) complex located on the west-central Gulf coast of Florida. Links to the Hopewell Interaction Sphere suggest that the people of Crystal River had connections with a broad range of communities, yet little is known concerning the role the site played in local, regional, or long-distance exchange networks. Pottery traditions vary amongst different communities of practice, therefore the level of interaction at Crystal River can be measured by looking at variation in the ceramic assemblage. I combine type/attribute, vessel form and function, gross paste, and chemical …

Online Game Advertising And Chinese College Students: Attitudes, First- And Third-Person Effects, Yan Tang Oct 2015

Online Game Advertising And Chinese College Students: Attitudes, First- And Third-Person Effects, Yan Tang

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study is to explore the relationships among Chinese college students’ attitudes toward online games and online game advertising, their perceived influence of online game advertising on themselves and others, and their attitude toward restrictions on online game advertising. The growing popularity of online games and the frequent use of advertising in promoting online gaming activities make it necessary to examine empirically the relationships among these variables. Based on a survey among 518 Chinese college students, the study found support for the mediating role of the third-person effect. It also found evidence for the first-person effect through …

The Short- And Long-Term Effects Of Child Abuse And Their Implications For The Suggested Length Of Physical And Psychosocial Treatment Regimens, Christine M. Ruff Oct 2015

The Short- And Long-Term Effects Of Child Abuse And Their Implications For The Suggested Length Of Physical And Psychosocial Treatment Regimens, Christine M. Ruff

Senior Honors Theses

Child abuse is the physical, psychological, or neglectful maltreatment of a child by a caregiver. Intimate partner violence relates closely to child mistreatment. Children are not likely to disclose that their parent or guardian is abusing them. Child abuse may result in short-term consequences, long-term consequences, or death. Some negative outcomes of maltreatment include delinquency, mental health issues, physical problems, educational underachievement, and socioeconomic disparities. The cycle of mistreatment is when a parent who suffered abuse as a child is more likely to maltreat his or her own child. There are factors that protect from the consequences of mistreatment. Research …

The Influence Of A Palliative Care Education Intervention In Increasing Knowledge And Self-Efficacy Of Nurses Practicing In Long-Term Care, Yvonne L. Joy Oct 2015

The Influence Of A Palliative Care Education Intervention In Increasing Knowledge And Self-Efficacy Of Nurses Practicing In Long-Term Care, Yvonne L. Joy

Doctoral Dissertations

As of 2014, nearly 6,000,000 people in the United States need palliative care. Almost 2,000,000 people with chronic, serious illnesses currently reside in long-term care facilities. Palliative care aims to relieve suffering and provide the best possible quality of life. Thus, the primary aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of an education intervention to increase nurses’ knowledge and self-efficacy in palliative care practice in long-term care settings. A secondary aim of this study was to determine if there was a significant difference in palliative care self-efficacy between registered nurses (RNs) and licensed practical nurses (LPNs). A two-group …

Effect Of Cultural Background And Training On Stigmatized Attitudes Among Healthcare Professionals: A Randomized Study Of Medical Students’ Attitude And Behaviors Toward Alcohol Dependent Individuals In The Middle East, Salman Alzayani

Doctoral Dissertations

Background The consumption of alcohol or drugs, as well as substance dependence do exist in the Middle East despite the religious, social and cultural constraints in the region. Stigma seems to exist in every area of life for individuals with mental illness and represents a major barrier to effective rehabilitation and reintegration of these patients. Aim To better understand the reasons behind stigmatizing attitudes toward persons with alcohol dependence and to evaluate the role of stigma in medical diagnosis and care. Methods The study consisted of two phases; Phase 1 examined whether medical students demonstrate stigmatized attitudes according to the …

When You Say Nothing At All: The Predictive Power Of Student Effort On Surveys, Collin Hitt Oct 2015

When You Say Nothing At All: The Predictive Power Of Student Effort On Surveys, Collin Hitt

Education Reform Faculty and Graduate Students Publications

Character traits and noncognitive skills are important for human capital development and longrun life outcomes. Research in economics and psychology now shows this clearly. But research into the exact determinants of noncognitive skills have been slowed by a common data limitation: most large-scale datasets do not contain adequate measures of noncognitive skills. This is a particularly acute problem in education policy evaluation. We demonstrate that there are important latent data within any survey dataset that can be used as proxy measures of noncognitive skills. Specifically, we examine the amount of conscientious effort that students exhibit on surveys, as measured by …

Perceptions Of Community And Risk Behavior Exposure For Youth In At-Risk Environments, Rosemary V. Barnett, Caroline Payne-Purvis, Gerald R. Culen Oct 2015

Perceptions Of Community And Risk Behavior Exposure For Youth In At-Risk Environments, Rosemary V. Barnett, Caroline Payne-Purvis, Gerald R. Culen

National Youth Advocacy & Resilience Journal

This paper highlights an examination of the relationship between perceptions of community and risk behavior exposure for youth in at-risk environments. Data were collected from 133 youth enrolled in after-school programs in two communities over a three-year period. The Youth Involved in Community Issues (YICI) survey assessed youth perceptions of community on four subscales measuring support, involvement, connectedness, and environment. The Social Behavioral Questionnaire (SBQ), with subscales of access, frequency of use, social behaviors, and neighborhood, asked participants to report risk behaviors that they saw occurring within their local area. Linear regression analysis indicated that youth community (overall score) predicted …
