An Exploratory Study Of 4th, 5th, And 6th Grade Summer Camp Participants’ Attitudes And Intentions Towards Physical Activity, Melissa Cater, Anne Kean, Diane Sasser

Journal of Human Sciences and Extension

Physical inactivity is a growing problem among children, particularly schoolaged youth. Research suggests children are especially prone to inactivity in the summer months when access to structured school-time and extra-curricular activities is reduced. Community programs like residential summer camps offer an excellent environment for engaging children in enjoyable physical activities while also helping them learn to be more physically active when they return home. Pre-existing attitudes often influence how much change a program inspires in an individual. The purpose of this study was to explore 4th, 5th, and 6th grade summer camp participants’ attitudes towards physical activity. Results of this …

Transformative Learning And The 4-H Camp Counselor Experience In Minnesota, Donna M. Leff, Michael S. Retallick, Nancy K. Franz

Journal of Human Sciences and Extension

While many studies about the 4-H camping experience focus on youth who are campers, few studies examine the outcomes of the experience for counselors. This study examines the extent to which 4-H camp results in transformative learning for 4-H members who serve as camp counselors, examines the perceived changes that occur within counselors, and describes the factors and characteristics of camp that result in personal transformation. The population for this study was 2012 Minnesota 4-H camp counselors. Using the Transformative Learning and the Camp Experience Staff Member Survey, the results indicated that camp counselors experienced transformative learning. Major personal changes …

The Roles Of Money’S Pride And Surprise Tag On The Use Of Money, Cong Liu, Nak Hwan Choi Oct 2015

The Roles Of Money’S Pride And Surprise Tag On The Use Of Money, Cong Liu, Nak Hwan Choi

Asia Marketing Journal

The present research examined the interesting but less attended effects of pride- and surprise-tagged money on consumers’ spending decisions. Focusing on the unexpected money received in their daily life, we explored recipient’s judgments and responses toward pride-tagged money versus surprise-tagged, and identified differences in types of recipient’s consumption and spending behaviors between the pride- tagged money and the surprise-tagged money. Consumers tend to use the money associated with pride (vs. surprise) to reward their invested effort; as a result, they were more likely to buy a personal gift. Moreover, in the context of self-gift, consumers with pride-tagged money have showed …

The Antecedents And Consequences Of Effective Brand Positioning, Changju Kim, Eunji Seo, Junghwa Hong, Kang, Stephen J. Newell

Asia Marketing Journal

This study investigates which variables most effectively influence the positioning strategy of a brand. In addition, we test the connection between the positioning strategy of the brand and loyalty. Finally, we explore how brand experience effects the relationship between brand position and brand loyalty. To this end, this study employs the street-intercept method to collect data on consumers’ perception of home appliances in Japan and conducts structural equation modeling analysis to test our hypotheses. Specifically, we find that assessments of product, service, and image have a significant impact on a brand’s position which, in turn, drives brand loyalty. In addition, …

Comparison Of Experienced And Inexperienced Consumers’ Utilisation Of Extrinsic Cues In Product Evaluation, Yoonjeun Kim, Kiwan Park, Yaeri Kim, Chung Oct 2015

Comparison Of Experienced And Inexperienced Consumers’ Utilisation Of Extrinsic Cues In Product Evaluation, Yoonjeun Kim, Kiwan Park, Yaeri Kim, Chung

Asia Marketing Journal

This study compares experienced and inexperienced consumers’ patterns in cue utilisation in product evaluations in the arts market. Borrowing the notion of high- and low-scope cues introduced by the cue-diagnosticity framework, we differentiate between the two most readily discernible extrinsic cues in the fine arts market – an art gallery’s brand reputation (a high-scope cue) and certificates of authenticity (a low-scope cue). These two cues are different in nature; the former is more abstract, intangible, and rich in content, so is more difficult to interpret than the latter. Given the differences in experienced and inexperienced consumers’ information processing styles, we …

Improving Elementary Teachers’ Well-Being Through A Strengths-Based Intervention: A Multiple Baseline Single-Case Design, Mollie Marie Mccullough Oct 2015

Improving Elementary Teachers’ Well-Being Through A Strengths-Based Intervention: A Multiple Baseline Single-Case Design, Mollie Marie Mccullough

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Teaching is considered to be one of the most highly demanding professions, and one that is associated with high levels of stress and sometimes deleterious outcomes. Although research demonstrates that burnout and attrition are often associated with specific characteristics of the occupation (e.g., challenging workload, standardized testing, merit-based salary) minimal research focuses on how to better support teachers’ well-being. The field of positive psychology affords a new perspective in how to obtain quality mental health without solely focusing on psychopathology within a deficits-based approach. This includes the implementation of interventions (i.e., positive psychology interventions [PPI]) that target constructs of well-being …

Violence And Police Diversity: A Call For Research, Mary D. Fan Oct 2015

Violence And Police Diversity: A Call For Research, Mary D. Fan

BYU Law Review

Deaths and protests in places where predominantly-white police forces patrol majority-black communities have focused the national spotlight on concerns over unrepresentative police forces. Responding to the controversy, mayors and police chiefs in cities across the nation are announcing goals to hire more minority officers. But does police diversification actually reduce the risk of violence in police encounters? This Article addresses this timely question of legal and practical import to communities seeking to prevent violence and pursue policies that survive constitutional scrutiny.

Drawing on restricted-access Centers for Disease Control data and social-psychological insights, this Article shows that there is a good …

Intellectual Property Law’S Plagiarism Fallacy, Gregory N. Mandel, Anne A. Fast, Kristina R. Olson Oct 2015

Intellectual Property Law’S Plagiarism Fallacy, Gregory N. Mandel, Anne A. Fast, Kristina R. Olson

BYU Law Review

Intellectual property law is caught in a widespread debate over whether it should serve incentive or natural rights objectives, and what the best means for achieving those ends are. This article reports a series of experiments revealing that these debates are actually orthogonal to how most users and many creators understand intellectual property law. The most common perception of intellectual property among the American public is that intellectual property law is designed to prevent plagiarism.

The plagiarism fallacy in intellectual property law is not an innocuous misperception. This fallacy likely helps explain pervasive illegal infringing activity on the Internet, common …

P-13 The Compassion Fatigue And Resilience Connection: A Survey Of Resilience, Compassion Fatigue, Burnout, And Compassion Satisfaction Among Trauma Responders, Harvey J. Burnett Jr., Kathleen Wahl

Celebration of Research and Creative Scholarship

Research has shown that compassion fatigue is associated with burnout and compassion satisfaction. Practically no studies have examined how resilience may impact these variables. This study examined how resilience is related to compassion fatigue, burnout, and compassion satisfaction among a convenience sample of disaster behavioral health and emergency preparedness responders (N = 139) attending a training conference in Michigan. Measures included the 30-item Professional Quality of Life Scale, the 14-item Resilience Scale, and a demographic questionnaire. Seventy-two percent of the participants were at risk for compassion fatigue, while 19% were at risk for burnout. Only 22% of participants had …

Flexible Gating Of Contextual Influences In Natural Vision, Odelia Schwartz Oct 2015

Flexible Gating Of Contextual Influences In Natural Vision, Odelia Schwartz

Mathematics Colloquium Series

An appealing hypothesis suggests that neurons represent inputs in a coordinate system that is matched to the statistical structure of images in the natural environment. I discuss theoretical work on unsupervised learning of statistical regularities in natural images. In the model, Bayesian inference amounts to a generalized form of divisive normalization, a canonical computation that has been implicated in many neural areas. In our framework, divisive normalization is flexible: it is recruited only when the image is inferred to contain dependencies, and muted otherwise. I particularly focus on recent work in which we have applied this approach to understanding spatial …
