Responsible Accounting For Stakeholders, Jeffrey S. Harrison, Joyce Van Der Van Der Laan Smith Nov 2015

Responsible Accounting For Stakeholders, Jeffrey S. Harrison, Joyce Van Der Van Der Laan Smith

Accounting Faculty Publications

Through a critique of existing financial theory underlying current accounting practices, and reapplication of this theory to a broad group of stakeholders, this paper lays a normative foundation for a revised perspective on the responsibility of the public accounting profession. Specifically, we argue that the profession should embrace the development of standards for reporting information important to a broader group of stakeholders than just investors and creditors. The FASB has recently moved in the opposite direction. Nonetheless, an institution around accounting for stakeholders continues to grow, backed by a groundswell of support from many sources. Based on institutional theory, we …

The Cultural Adaptation Of The Clinician-Administered Ptsd Scale For Spanish-Speaking Latinos With Limited English Proficiency In The United States, Maria Jose Rendon Nov 2015

The Cultural Adaptation Of The Clinician-Administered Ptsd Scale For Spanish-Speaking Latinos With Limited English Proficiency In The United States, Maria Jose Rendon

Open Access Dissertations

In this study, I conducted an empirically-based adaptation of the Clinician-Administered PTSD Scale for DSM-5 (CAPS-5; Weathers, Blake, Schnurr, Marx, & Keane, 2013b) for Spanish-speaking Latinos with limited English proficiency (LEP). The sample utilized cross-cultural equivalence guidelines posited by the Cultural Equivalence Model (Canino & Bravo, 1994; Flaherty et al., 1988) to achieve content, semantic, and technical equivalence between the Spanish adaptation of the CAPS-5 and its original English version. This process entailed seven steps: (a) the forward translation by a native Spanish speaker, (b) revision by a panel of bilingual Latino mental health professionals (n = 3), (c) revision …

Organizational Lessons From Social Change Gone Awry, Raymond L. Forbes

All Faculty and Staff Scholarship

Do big organizations actually learn from their colossal social change mistakes and attempt to profit from them? This paper presents a massive strategic organizational change effort gone astray. It both describes and analyzes the change from the reflective perspective of an insider. Offering a non-traditional description of the various phases of the social change process, this work showcases the counter-cultural nature of the effort. It also discusses the Zeitgeist or situational context, the relevant history of the affected organization, and provides insights into the various parties impacted by the change. Additionally, this piece notes the limits of power, rationality and …

Dynamic Advantage, Stephen Richard Wyatt Nov 2015

Dynamic Advantage, Stephen Richard Wyatt

Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)

Approximately eighty per cent of the value of most listed firms is driven by expectations of their future earning stream. Yet past and current period results are decreasingly relevant as indicators of future performance as the speed of change in business, technology, trends and markets increases. For many companies instability is the new norm, agility and preparing for future changes are essential capabilities.

This research, drawing on experiences of 30 global corporations, shows that far from being giants with slow reactions, several global corporations are able to leverage their extensive networks and their participation in a wide diversity of market …

Examining The Influence Of Organizational Culture On Employees' Ethical Behavior In Public Sector Organizations, Richard H. Afedzie Nov 2015

Examining The Influence Of Organizational Culture On Employees' Ethical Behavior In Public Sector Organizations, Richard H. Afedzie

Human Resource Development Theses and Dissertations

Much of the literature on organizational ethics attribute unethical behavior in the workplace as originating from greed, inadequate ethics training, lax ethics laws, and lenient disciplinary actions when ethical lapses do occur. While this perception advances a cogent argument, it does not examine the entire concept of unethical behavior, because it does not consider the organizational culture which clearly guides employees' ethical behavior and decision making in the organization. In this study, a basic interpretative qualitative research design was employed utilizing semi-structured interviews to investigate how organizational cultural systems, member interactions, leadership role modeling and training interventions influence employees' ethical …

The Development Of Job-Based Psychological Ownership, Robert B. Bullock Nov 2015

The Development Of Job-Based Psychological Ownership, Robert B. Bullock

Industrial-Organizational Psychology Dissertations

Psychological ownership has come to light as an important state with strong implications on employee attitudes and behaviors. However, relatively little attention has been paid towards the process by which employees come to develop feelings of psychological ownership towards their work, particularly regarding the role played by individual traits in this process. Ownership theorists claim that personality and disposition should matter (Mayhew, Ashkanasy, Bramble, & Gardner, 2007; Pierce & Jussila, 2011), yet these claims remain largely untested.

The purpose of the current investigation is to address these gaps by exploring how employee disposition and job design contribute to the development …

Contemporary Daoist Tangki Practice, Margaret Chan Nov 2015

Contemporary Daoist Tangki Practice, Margaret Chan

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

Since 1979, China has seen a renaissance of indigenous belief systems, including Daoist tangki spirit-medium practice. Tangki traditions have Neolithic roots. The founding myth is of a man who magically battled flood demons to save China. In imperial times, ordinary people, disenfranchised by the state religion and pawns of dynastic wars, created a soteriology of self-empowerment. Ordinary people would transform through spirit pos-session into warrior gods who would save the community. Millennia-old tangki traditions have diffused into the modern Chinese quotidian. With a remote Central Committee of the Communist Party recalling distant emperors, village temples, many led by tangkis, have …

Sociological, Psychological And Historical Perspectives On The Reemergence Of Religion And Spirituality Within Organizational Life., Timothy G. Ewest Nov 2015

Sociological, Psychological And Historical Perspectives On The Reemergence Of Religion And Spirituality Within Organizational Life., Timothy G. Ewest

Journal of Religion and Business Ethics

The intent of this paper is to account for the most recent philosophical shift occurring within organizational life away from the modern philosophical preference towards secularization, and the corresponding focus on technical competence, as posited by Fordism, to a philosophical shift that inculcates endemic religious and spiritual beliefs. The impetus for this change can be best understood by using psychological and sociological paradigms including groups of individuals whose collective human agentic action (humans making choices as groups and imposing those choices on the world) and social movements theory as an attestation of the unwillingness of many to lead a bi-furcated …

Understanding The Relationship Between Technical And Managerial Factors And Product Innovation At A Tier 1 Engine Component Supplier, Carmo Ribeiro Oct 2015

Understanding The Relationship Between Technical And Managerial Factors And Product Innovation At A Tier 1 Engine Component Supplier, Carmo Ribeiro

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

This study provided an assessment of the technical and managerial factors on the development of successful innovative internal combustion engine (ICE) components at a XYZ Tier 1 supplier firm. Further, factors related to regulations, component application, and customer integration were identified and complement the study.

A deficiency has been identified in the literature in that most studies concentrate on inter-firm innovation from the customer’s perspective within the supply-chain relationship. While suppliers have increasingly become a source of innovation, very little is known about specific ways in which innovation occurs at Tier 1 suppliers. The mechanisms by which innovative ideas are …

A Mixed-Methods (Quantitative-Qualitative) Study To Identify The Perceived Level Of, Zeky Zardo

Dissertations

Different approaches to developing leaders have been established through various forms of self-assessment, action learning, and education and training activities (Smither et al., 2005). The existing body of research on the impact and success of college and university leadership development programs focuses heavily on undergraduate leadership programs and not graduate-level programs such as the Master of Business Administration (MBA) or the doctorate. The purpose of this mixed-methods (quantitative–qualitative) study was to identify the perceived level of transformational leadership skill development by students enrolled in a doctoral program in organizational leadership. In addition, it was the purpose of this study to …

Transforming Institutions: Undergraduate Stem Education For The 21st Century, Gabriela C. Weaver, Wilella D. Burgess, Amy L. Childress, Linda Slakey

Purdue University Press Books

Higher education is coming under increasing scrutiny, both publically and within academia, with respect to its ability to appropriately prepare students for the careers that will make them competitive in the 21st-century workplace. At the same time, there is a growing awareness that many global issues will require creative and critical thinking deeply rooted in the technical STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) disciplines. However, the existing and ingrained structures of higher education, particularly in the STEM fields, are not set up to provide students with extensive skill development in communication, teamwork, and divergent thinking, which is needed …

Culture Of Safety Improvement Project Requires Sustained Organizational Commitment, Jessica Gruendler Oct 2015

Culture Of Safety Improvement Project Requires Sustained Organizational Commitment, Jessica Gruendler

DNP and Student Works

Hospital leaders have been directed to focus on assuring patient safety and improving outcomes through the development of a strong safety culture. The Safety Attitude Questionnaire (SAQ) at a small rural hospital showed a decline, over three years, in the perceived safety climate of the organization, by clinical staff. The purpose of this quality improvement project was the implementation of a structured debriefing program, promoting teamwork and collaboration between leadership and front-line staff, to improve the safety culture of the organization, exhibited by an improvement in SAQ scores within one year. Leading safety researchers suggest that developing a culture of …

Understanding User Resistance To Information Technology In Healthcare: The Nature And Role Of Perceived Threats, Madison Ngafeeson

Transactions of the International Conference on Health Information Technology Advancement

Information technology (IT) in healthcare is here to stay. The United States government has made efforts in the past ten years to harness the power of information technologies in healthcare to improve legibility, lessen medical errors, keep costs low, and boost the overall quality of health care. However, IT user resistance in healthcare is continually cited as a major barrier to achieving desired outcomes. Understanding the nature and manifestation of resistance is clearly a key to successfully managing this industry-wide change, fostering adoption, and realizing positive outcomes. Earlier research had established perceived threats as a significant antecedent of user resistance; …

Realizing The Value Of Ehr Systems: Critical Success Factors, Elizabeth A. Regan, Jumee Wang Oct 2015

Realizing The Value Of Ehr Systems: Critical Success Factors, Elizabeth A. Regan, Jumee Wang

Transactions of the International Conference on Health Information Technology Advancement

Now that a majority of hospitals and primary care physicians have made the transition to electronic health record (EHR) systems, realizing value from this investment has become a major issue. The issue raises two key questions: Why do so many EHR implementations continue to fall short of achieving intended healthcare outcome goals? What differentiates those that succeed from those that fall short? This article builds on prior research using a systems framework to analyze the EHR implementation process. It focuses on ten common themes (CSFs) that appear to differentiate institutions which achieve positive healthcare outcomes from those that do not. …

Does Unlearning Impact Interaction Of Ehr End-Users?, Julee Hafner, Cherie Noteboom Oct 2015

Does Unlearning Impact Interaction Of Ehr End-Users?, Julee Hafner, Cherie Noteboom

Transactions of the International Conference on Health Information Technology Advancement

Organizations need to remain competitive in today’s marketplace. Technology change impacts knowledge competencies that require alteration quickly, to reduce operating costs, and eliminate human errors. Updating computer system documentation procedures require unlearning to maintain competency. Physician end-users possess specialized competencies, or knowledge base in documentation of patient data to the degree that these operations have become automatic. To change the knowledge base of practitioners, end-users must use intellectual capital to unlearn patient care EHR documentation. This study focused on competency change, with the perceptions and influencers of unlearning of old competencies during EHR updates.
