The Nature And Function Of Professional Support Networks For Teachers Of English Language Learners, Betsy Lynn Ferguson
The Nature And Function Of Professional Support Networks For Teachers Of English Language Learners, Betsy Lynn Ferguson
Theses and Dissertations
The English learner (EL) population in the United States continues to grow. To improve their pedagogy in working with this population, many educators have received training in English as a Second Language (ESL), but the gap between ELs and their native English speaking peers persists. When teachers engage as members of professional support networks, they are more likely to successfully implement the strategies learned in their ESL professional development (Echevarria, Richards-Tutor, Chinn, & Ratleff, 2011). This study considered the nature and function of the professional support network of a district's ESL-endorsed teachers. Using network theory methods, 257 teachers and other …
From Networked Learning To Operational Practice: Constructing And Transferring Superintendent Knowledge In A Regional Instructional Rounds Network, Timothy J. Travis
From Networked Learning To Operational Practice: Constructing And Transferring Superintendent Knowledge In A Regional Instructional Rounds Network, Timothy J. Travis
Dissertations
Instructional rounds are an emerging network structure with processes and protocols designed to develop superintendents’ knowledge and skills in leading large-scale improvement, to enable superintendents to build an infrastructure that supports the work of improvement, to assist superintendents in distributing leadership throughout their district, and to develop a cadre of educational leaders focused on developing their practice (Rallis, Tedder, Lachman, & Elmore, 2006). In a platform-learning model, learning in a superintendents’ network can be viewed as occurring both individually and collectively on an external platform outside each individual school district (Schulz & Geithner, 2010). In this phenomenological study, I explored …

The Shared Services Organizational Model In Higher Education Enrollment Management: The Application Of The Transactional Components Of The Burke-Litwin Model Of Organizational Performance And Change And The Moderating Effect Of Employee Engagement On Individual Motivation, Rosemary Cooper
Human Resource Development Theses and Dissertations
As a result of increased economic, social, and educational constraints, institutions of higher education are evaluating new approaches to operating in more restrictive environments. To mitigate these external constraints, institutional administrators are implementing organizational change structures that create efficiency, drive down costs and make the best use of human capital and technological resources. Within the last decade there has been strong encouragement from higher education pundits and consultants to implement the shared services organizational structure in higher education enrollment management divisions. Higher education institutions are borrowing the shared services organizational model from other industries and utilizing organizational change protocol from …

Patient-Driven Vs. Evidence-Centric Decision Models In The Treatment Of Hemophilia, Christopher C. Lamb
Patient-Driven Vs. Evidence-Centric Decision Models In The Treatment Of Hemophilia, Christopher C. Lamb
Student Scholarship
Physicians treating hemophilia face difficult decisions related to complex bleeding disorders. To understand how physicians in the United States (US) and the United Kingdom (UK) make critical, life-saving decisions, a qualitative study was performed involving a series of interviews with treatment experts from each country. A total of twenty-four (24) physicians from the US and the UK were asked about their experiences treating hemophilia and how they made certain decisions. American physicians tend to be patient-centric; they are more influenced by a patient's specific preferences and unique, individual conditions. British physicians are more evidence-centric where they approach the patient based …

Burnout Versus Personality: Predicting Volunteer Retention, Conor Thomas Tuohy
Burnout Versus Personality: Predicting Volunteer Retention, Conor Thomas Tuohy
Master's Theses
Employee turnover is an important issue for any organization, but it is of critical importance for volunteer organizations. Research shows that a strong predictor of volunteer turnover is a volunteer’s intention to remain in that organization. This study measured volunteers’ intention to remain and compared the known predictor of burnout to the potential predictor of personality (through personality traits) in order to find a better predictor of a volunteer’s intention to remain in an organization. Using survey data obtained from 65 participants from a single volunteer organization, this study showed that burnout and personality traits failed to predict a volunteer’s …
Emotional Intelligence And Employee Engagement: A Quantitative Study To Explore The Relationship Between The Emotional Intelligence Of Frontline Managers And Supervisors And The Degree Of Employee Engagement Of Their Direct Reports In A Tertiary Care Health Care Setting, Derrick Suehs
Education Doctoral
The health care industry is moving from a volume-based, fee-for-service financial reimbursement system to a value-based purchasing model. These changes have caused substantial challenges in the delivery of care. Hospital leaders must conduct business differently to lower cost, improve safety outcomes, and be more efficient and effective. Numerous studies show engaged employees improve operational performance. Past studies point to leaders with high emotional intelligence who are effective at engaging employees. The purpose of this study was to determine if there is a statistically significant correlation between frontline managers and supervisors’ emotional intelligence and the degree of engagement of their direct …

Makara Human Behavior Studies in Asia
The high risk of failure associated with the implementation of enterprise resource planning (ERP) system relates to resistance among employees by rejecting or sabotaging the system. Communication has been identified as a critical success factor on ERP implementation in several studies, whereas, many others do not depict any relation at all. The current study, however, argues that communication regarding the benefits of ERP system is the most critical success factor for the accomplishment of ERP implementation in family-owned company in Indonesia. Empirical data from 116 ERP users were examined by using logistic regression, which reveals that communication has significant negative …

An Integrated Framework For Fostering Human Factor Sustainability And Increased Safety In Aviation Ramp Operations, Sarah M. Hubbard, Denver Lopp
Journal of Aviation Technology and Engineering
The aviation work environment has one of the highest accident rates of any industry sector in the United States, resulting in significant costs for both employee injuries and equipment damage. In fact, injury rates exceed rates found in areas that are widely recognized as hazardous, such as construction and mining, and it is estimated that aircraft ground damage costs are as high as 5 billion to 10 billion dollars per year. Purdue University’s Aviation Technology Department has conducted numerous safety and human factors studies in the past decade encompassing maintenance and repair operations, corporate flight departments, and over ten major …

Governing Water In Canada: The Legislative Experiments In New Governance, Patricia Hania
Governing Water In Canada: The Legislative Experiments In New Governance, Patricia Hania
PhD Dissertations
Governing water in Canada is in transition. Since 2000, episodes of drought, unsafe drinking water, and polluted watersheds have affected local and First Nations communities. In reaction to these crises, provincial regulators entered a new governance phase. This regulatory turn profoundly transforms the traditional environmental regulatory approach by introducing a collaborative new governance arrangement. The legal scholarship is generally supportive of this trend, however, a dearth of empirical research exists to understand how decisions are made under this new regulatory approach.
This dissertation presents an eco-resiliency framework to examine the responsiveness of this new governance mode to environmental change. The …

Fathers Caring For Children With Special Health Care Needs: Experiences Of Work-Life Fit, Claudia Sellmaier
Dissertations and Theses
Research about employed fathers of children with special health care needs (SHCN) is still limited, leaving fathers without the necessary workplace and community supports to better integrate work and life. Caregivers with exceptional caregiving responsibilities report greater levels of work-family conflict and considerable caregiver strain, as well as negative employment and financial consequences related to their caregiving responsibilities. These caregivers often struggle to access community supports such as childcare, after-school care, and support from friends and neighbors.
This study provides insights into the types of job, home, and community resources that are relevant for fathers of children with SHCN in …

We conducted a quantitative online survey of tutors’ demographic information, backgrounds, and experiences with the organisation. Of IkamvaYouth’s approximately 300 tutors, 223 responded. We conducted tutor and …
Cognitive Coaching As Form Of Professional Development In A Linguistically Diverse School, Alla Gonzalez Del Castillo
Cognitive Coaching As Form Of Professional Development In A Linguistically Diverse School, Alla Gonzalez Del Castillo
Dissertations
While American classrooms are described as linguistically diverse, teachers find themselves unprepared to successfully educate such students. Previous studies indicate that cognitive coaching is one form of professional development that can assist teachers in becoming self-directed practitioners who are able to reflect on their practice and adjust it to meet the needs of various learners, including linguistically diverse students (Batt, 2010; Costa & Garmston, 2002; Joyce & Showers, 2002). This study describes elementary teachers’ perceptions of cognitive coaching in a linguistically diverse school: (1) In what ways do teachers perceive cognitive coaching as professional development? (2) How do observed teacher …

Meeting The Needs Of A Culturally And Racially Diverse Student Body Online, Gretchen Elizabeth Hormel
Communication & Leadership Dissertations and Theses
The citizens of the United States contribute a rich blend that includes (but is not limited to) cultural heritage, race, gender, sexuality, and socio-economic backgrounds. Therefore, it is integral that online curriculum meets the challenge of effectively communicating with a diverse student body, as well as effectively facilitates a democratic learning environment. An online academic environment that is respectful and responsive to diverse backgrounds and perspectives is oftentimes referred to as a democratic online learning environment. Research indicates that seven components make up a democratic online learning environment and include: 1 - Culturally competent staff (Thorpe, 2002, p. 115, Ramsay, …

The Libraries They Are A-Changin’: How Libraries Reorganize, John Novak, Annette Day
Library Faculty Research
This paper will report on the results of a study of library reorganizations in the literature. The authors identified five steps common to all library reorganizations, and this paper describes those steps as well as two management change theories most mentioned in the literature--the eight-step process of change by John Kotter and Reframing Organizations by Lee G. Bolman and Terrence E. Deal. The paper will draw conclusions formed by a comparison of these theoretical models to the practice and real life experience of reorganizations as described by libraries in the literature.
