Study Of Escherichia Coli Adp-Glucose Pyrophosphorylase Catalysis: Investigating Critical Roles Of Conserved Arg32 And Lys42 Residues, Angela Lynn Mahaffey

Dissertations

Carbohydrates have been most notable as energy sources for mammals, bacteria (glycogen) and plants (starch) – and in many other species. As such the biosynthesis of carbohydrates is essential to the sustainability of many forms of life, on earth. Adenosine-‘5-diphosphate glucose pyrophosphate (ADP-Glc pyrophosphorylase; ADP-Glc PPase) is the allosterically controlled “first committed step” in both the biosynthetic pathways of starch (~25% amylose and ~75% amylopectin, in plants and algae) and glycogen (in bacteria), preceding the starch/glycogen synthase reaction. By catalyzing the following reaction, ATP + α –D-Glc-1P ADP-Glc + PPi , ADP-Glc PPase functions as the primary enzyme in the …

Speculation: The Future(S) Of A Global Education Market, Kaine Osburn Jan 2015

Speculation: The Future(S) Of A Global Education Market, Kaine Osburn

Dissertations

This dissertation establishes a structural understanding of what is necessary to imagine in material terms the future of how education will be financed and how education knowledge will be circulated on a global scale. Making explicit a governmentality perspective for examining neoliberal constructions of education policy and practice first, this dissertation applies that perspective to understanding the trajectory of World Bank policies on financing and governing education over the last twenty years. While the first three chapters draw on existing conceptual and policy work, the chapters combine aspects of them in new ways which reveal a clear understanding of an …

Easing My Burden: A Grounded Theory Study Of Kidney Transplant Recipients' Experience With Their Transplant Coordinators, Gwen E. Mcnatt Jan 2015

Easing My Burden: A Grounded Theory Study Of Kidney Transplant Recipients' Experience With Their Transplant Coordinators, Gwen E. Mcnatt

Dissertations

Organ transplantation holds the promise of new life or better life for thousands of Americans every year. Transplantation involves a process that stretches over time beginning at referral, moving to transplantation and long term care. The transplant coordinator is considered an integral part of this care. Transplant coordinators are considered so important to the care of these patients that transplant centers are required to have at least one transplant coordinator by federal regulations.

The role of the transplant coordinator, however, is not well defined. Although many of the role dimensions attributed to transplant coordinators are consistent with nursing practice, the …

A Multi-Method Analysis Of Body Mass Index, Physical Activity, And Executive Functions Among Urban Minority Girls, Amanda K. Ward

Dissertations

Recent evidence suggests that the summer months represent an especially vulnerable time of year for weight gain, inactivity, and cognitive decline, particularly among adolescent girls. To explore these issues, this study examined the relations between changes in physical activity (PA), body mass index (BMI), and executive functions (EFs) among a sample of sixty-eight, 10-to 14-year-old girls participating in a four-week, community-based summer camp. Objectively measured PA data (i.e., accelerometer), BMI measurements, and EF neuropsychological assessments were conducted prior to the first week of camp and during the last week of camp. Results revealed that girls increased in all measurements of …

Paradoxes In Physical Health, Robert Crosnoe, Aida Ramos-Wada, Claude Bonazzo Jan 2015

Paradoxes In Physical Health, Robert Crosnoe, Aida Ramos-Wada, Claude Bonazzo

Faculty Publications - Department of Sociology

This chapter reviews the evidence from social science and medical research that sheds light on this potential immigrant paradox in health -- when, where, and for whom it holds or does not apply. In doing so, two important points need to be kept in mind. First, the existence of the paradox does not necessarily mean that immigrants are doing than everyone else. Rather, it means that they are doing better than social and economic positions suggest that they should be. Second, paradox may apply in general but not hold in specific domains of health for certain subgroups or at certain …

Eating Closer To Home: On Being Neighborly (Chapter Four Of To The Table), Lisa Graham Mcminn

Faculty Publications - Department of Sociology

Excerpt: "The dandelions awoke on a sunny day near the end of March, following on the heels of a month's worth of rain that fell in three days' time. Bright yellow flowers opened to the sun, welcoming bees and other insects looking for pollen and nectar, and welcoming a giant forager eager for blossoms to make dandelion wine. "Pick me!" they seemed to say. So I did, knowing more would come. Aware of my fellow harvesters, I waited to pick a blossom until a hardworking bee took off for another blossom or for home, hind legs heavily laden with yellow …

A City And Countywide Summit To Advance Healthy Homes & Healthy Communities In Chicago And Cook County, Illinois, Center For The Human Rights Of Children At Loyola University Chicago

Center for the Human Rights of Children

The home serves many purposes besides a place of residency. The home is where we begin and finish our day, where families and their children live, play, and grow for years, and where people have a sense of comfort and safety. Unfortunately, the home is a place where many known and unknown environmental toxins cause health hazards that affect residents on a daily basis. Indoor environmental hazards in the home harm millions of children and families each year. Scientists have long recognized that indoor toxic hazards can pose far greater risks to children’s health than outdoor exposures because of the …

Marine Science Faculty Publications

Gelatinous zooplankton, such as ctenophores and jellyfish, are important components of marine and brackish ecosystems and play critical roles in aquatic biogeochemistry. As voracious predators of plankton, ctenophores have key positions in aquatic food webs and are often successful invaders when introduced to new areas. Gelatinous zooplankton have strong impacts on ecosystem services, particularly in coastal environments. However, little is known about the factors responsible for regulating population dynamics of gelatinous organisms, including biological interactions that may contribute to bloom demise. Ctenophores are known to contain specific bacterial communities and a variety of invertebrate parasites and symbionts; however, no previous …

Cognitive Processes In Craving: From The Laboratory To The Real World., Jessica Skorka-Brown Jan 2015

Cognitive Processes In Craving: From The Laboratory To The Real World., Jessica Skorka-Brown

School of Psychology Theses

Elaborated Intrusion (EI) Theory posits that craving involves mental imagery in the same sensory modalities as the craved substance or activity. Visual imagery predominates, therefore craving should selectively interfere with performance on visual task, and conversely visual tasks should interfere with craving. This thesis reports tests of this prediction, both in the laboratory and real-world settings, to provide a basis for designing practical tasks for interfering with cravings in a natural environment. Contrary to predictions, experiments 1 and 2 showed no effect of craving on visual or verbal task performance. There were, however, effects of task performance on craving in …

Stiff knee gait (SKG) is one of a few classified walking patterns which people with cerebral palsy (pwCP) can present with. The characteristic for SKG is delayed and/or reduced peak knee flexion during swing phase, which can reduce walking ability and result in functional restrictions. Through the use of both clinical and laboratory based measures this cross-sectional study aimed to identify the factors associated with SKG, suggest possible treatment options and propose potential directions for future research. The impact of five variables on knee flexion amplitude during the swing phase of gait was assessed. Data was gathered from a group …

Deoxynivalenol: Toxicological Profile And Potential For Reducing Cereal Grain Contamination Using Bacterial Additives In Fermented Animal Feed., William Vevers Jan 2015

Deoxynivalenol: Toxicological Profile And Potential For Reducing Cereal Grain Contamination Using Bacterial Additives In Fermented Animal Feed., William Vevers

Other Faculty of Science and Engineering Theses

Deoxynivalenol (DON) contamination of grain destined for animal feeds is a major toxicological risk to monogastrics and is suspected of restricting productivity in ruminants. Whereas bacterial additives have been developed that can detoxify DON in the rumen and lower intestine, there are currently no commercial inoculants able to perform this task in crimped grain (CG) silage, a regionally important method of moist grain preservation based on homo- and heterofermentative lactic acid bacteria or chemical additives. Determining whether this ensiling process alongside the action of detoxifying bacteria has the potential to remove DON in CG prior to ingestion, was explored in …

Optimisation Of Rebreeding Strategy In Uk Holstein Dairy Cattle- A Multifactorial Study, Richard Michael Miller Jan 2015

Optimisation Of Rebreeding Strategy In Uk Holstein Dairy Cattle- A Multifactorial Study, Richard Michael Miller

Other Faculty of Science and Engineering Theses

Dairy production in the UK has undergone a period of sustained increase both in number of cows held in each unit and yields per cow. Whilst much of this yield increase can be attributed to nutritional science, the production capacity of individual animals has also contributed significantly through both higher peak yields and greater persistency of production throughout lactation. This additional production has not come without cost which has manifested itself as a general decrease in reproductive performance. Although the associated lengthening of the calving interval has led to an increase in herd average days in milk, the question arises …

Development Of The Personal And Professional Self-Care Scale, Katherine Elizabeth Dorociak Jan 2015

Development Of The Personal And Professional Self-Care Scale, Katherine Elizabeth Dorociak

Master's Theses

In recent years, there has been an increased emphasis on the importance of self- care for psychologists and other mental health professionals. However, the research on self-care is limited because of the lack of an empirically based, psychometrically sound measure of this construct. Thus, the purpose of this project was to develop a measure of personal and professional self-care. The preliminary phase involved the development of a self-care definition and a two-factor framework that divided self-care into personal and professional activities. Based on this definition and framework, self-care items were generated for expert evaluation. After incorporating the expert feedback, 52 …

The Role Of Central Metabolism And Electron Transport In Biofilm Formation By Vibrio Fischeri, Jakob Michael Ondrey Jan 2015

The Role Of Central Metabolism And Electron Transport In Biofilm Formation By Vibrio Fischeri, Jakob Michael Ondrey

Master's Theses

Biofilms protect bacteria from environmental threats, including antibiotics; thus, biofilms formed during infections pose an increasing threat to human health. A natural model used to study biofilm formation in the context of a host is the symbiosis between Vibrio fischeri and its host, the squid Euprymna scolopes. Successful colonization depends on the formation of a biofilm and genes involved in making the polysaccharide matrix component, syp. In culture, biofilm phenotypes, including the formation of wrinkled colonies, similarly depend on syp. However, little is known about other factors that contribute to this phenotype. To expand the utility of currently available genetic …

The Impacts Of Family Environment And Stress Reactivity On Daily Mood For Low-Income Latino Adolescents, Stephanie K. Brewer Jan 2015

The Impacts Of Family Environment And Stress Reactivity On Daily Mood For Low-Income Latino Adolescents, Stephanie K. Brewer

Master's Theses

Low-income Latino adolescents are at an increased risk for developing psychopathology, as the chronic stressors faced by those who grow up in poverty have an adverse cumulative effect, and the relationship between exposure to poverty and negative mental health outcomes is intensified for ethnic minority youth. One of the most impactful ways in which poverty causes deteriorations in adolescent mental health is through heightened levels of parent-child conflict. Another harmful result of the multiple stressors faced by poor youth is the dysregulation of the stress reactivity system. For Latino adolescents, problems with mood are a particular concern, as Latino adolescents …

The Influence Of Eastern Oyster (Crassostrea Virginica) Reef Restoration On Nitrogen Cycling In A Eutrophic Estuary., Michael Hassett Jan 2015

The Influence Of Eastern Oyster (Crassostrea Virginica) Reef Restoration On Nitrogen Cycling In A Eutrophic Estuary., Michael Hassett

Master's Theses

Oysters (Crassostrea virginica) are functionally extinct in the urbanized Hudson-Raritan estuary (HRE) in New York City, however, oyster restoration is promoted to mitigate nitrogen (N) pollution via oysters' filtration and excretion. Seasonally, I took 12 sediment cores (45 cm2) adjacent to and 10 m away from a recently constructed reef in the HRE. Cores were incubated in flow-through chambers with site water containing (1) no amendments, (2) 15N-ammonium, or (3) 15N-nitrate, from which I calculated coupled nitrification-denitrification and direct denitrification as isotope-enriched N2. Coupled denitrification was minimal at all sites while direct denitrification was elevated near the reef, suggesting organic …

Social Policy Shifts And The Relationship Between Snap Workers And Their Clients, Latrese Annette Monden Jan 2015

Social Policy Shifts And The Relationship Between Snap Workers And Their Clients, Latrese Annette Monden

Master's Theses

In an effort to better understand how federal social policy changes shape the ways in which public service workers assist their clients in obtaining food benefits through Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Programs (SNAP), previously known as food stamps, this study uses ethnography and interviews to capture the experiences of workers and their clients. Specifically, it examines how public service workers implement new policies while maintaining their professional identities and responding to the mission of their organization. These goals may be in tension. The key findings are that workers do not resist changes in policy because of the limitations of their job …

Investigating The Role Of Cysteine In Biofilm Formation By Vibrio Fischeri, Priyanka Abhishek Singh Jan 2015

Investigating The Role Of Cysteine In Biofilm Formation By Vibrio Fischeri, Priyanka Abhishek Singh

Master's Theses

Biofilms are an important area of medical research because bacterial biofilms can form on implants such as catheters and are highly resistant to antibiotics and other antimicrobials. The symbiosis between Vibrio fischeri-Euprymna scolopes, is good model to study biofilm. V. fischeri has 18 gene polysaccharide locus, syp, that is required for biofilm formation and colonization. A recent mutant study suggested the possibility that cysteine biosynthetic genes were involved in biofilm formation by V. fischeri, including cysH, cysJ, cysK, and cysN. My results supported a role for cysK and, to a lesser extent, cysH in biofilm formation. Finally, I have data …
