Comparison Of Bacterial Flora In Fish Mucus And Lake Water, Robert W. Thomas Jan 2015

Comparison Of Bacterial Flora In Fish Mucus And Lake Water, Robert W. Thomas

Honors Theses, 1963-2015

Although commonly known for their ability to cause deadly infectious diseases, there are populations of bacteria (identified as normal flora) that symbiotically live on and amongst larger host organisms and positively impact survival of the host. In previous research, culturing methods suggest that freshwater fish (i.e. bluegill and northern pike) maintain a normal flora population and that this flora aids in protection and the health of the fish. Our study used Ion torrent PGM sequencing to identify a larger, more complete population of normal flora in 2 different lake samples from three different species of fish. Identifying and comparing the …

Fear Of Fatherhood, Deborah Weatherspoon, Wendy Sponsler, Christopher Weatherspoon, Dorothy Campbell Jan 2015

Fear Of Fatherhood, Deborah Weatherspoon, Wendy Sponsler, Christopher Weatherspoon, Dorothy Campbell

Walden Faculty and Staff Publications

The fatherhood role is influenced by culture, religion, social factors, and economic norms. In Jamaica pregnancy is often treated as a female only event. Women are left to visit their clinics alone and have support from female family members. The man’s focus is providing financial support. In the past fathers were subjected to migrant labor and left their families for long periods. This tradition remained even when they were not working. Today, men are taking on more of the role of fatherhood, becoming involved and supportive and experiencing the privilege of pregnancy though of a secondary nature through their partner’s …

Exercise and Nutrition Sciences Faculty Publications

Objective. To evaluate parents’ beliefs and practices related to childhood obesity and determine if these are influenced by parent’s perception of their own weight or their child’s weight.

Methods. Parents of obese (n = 689) or normal weight (n = 1122) children 4–15 years in Georgia, USA, were randomly selected to complete a telephone survey. Frequency of child obesity-related perceptions, beliefs, and practices were assessed, stratified by parent-perceived self-weight and child weight status, and compared using Chi-squared tests and multivariate logistic regression.

Results. Most parents, regardless of perceived child weight, agreed that child overweight/obesity can cause serious illness …

Association Between Dietary Patterns During Pregnancy And Birth Size Measures In A Diverse Population In Southern Us, Uriyoan Colón-Ramos, Susan B. Racette, Jody M. Ganiban, Thuy G. Nguyen, Mehmet Kocak, Kecia N. Carroll, Eszter Volgyi, Frances A. Tylavsky Jan 2015

Association Between Dietary Patterns During Pregnancy And Birth Size Measures In A Diverse Population In Southern Us, Uriyoan Colón-Ramos, Susan B. Racette, Jody M. Ganiban, Thuy G. Nguyen, Mehmet Kocak, Kecia N. Carroll, Eszter Volgyi, Frances A. Tylavsky

Global Health Faculty Publications

Despite increased interest in promoting nutrition during pregnancy, the association between maternal dietary patterns and birth outcomes has been equivocal. We examined maternal dietary patterns during pregnancy as a determinant of offspring’s birth weight-for-length (WLZ), weight-for-age (WAZ), length-for-age (LAZ), and head circumference (HCZ) Z-scores in Southern United States (n = 1151). Maternal diet during pregnancy was assessed by seven dietary patterns. Multivariable linear regression models described the association of WLZ, WAZ, LAZ, and HCZ with diet patterns controlling for other maternal and child characteristics. In bivariate analyses, WAZ and HCZ were significantly lower for processed and processed-Southern compared to healthy …

The pretext when approaching this subject is to present new elements that show the otomí world vision based in field data and the revision of what has been written. Mythology and the language itself contributed elements to demonstrate the otomíes are guided by a trinity notion which is present within their universe; it is a new way to approach the indigenous world (above all the otomí tribes) in a scientific manner. This work has the intention of presenting new elements of understanding the vision of the otomí world; the reflections are based on camp dates and specialists, who have written …

Early Childhood Program Staffs' Self-Efficacy Concerning The Importance Of Quality Child Care, Susan Mitchell Jan 2015

Early Childhood Program Staffs' Self-Efficacy Concerning The Importance Of Quality Child Care, Susan Mitchell

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

This study focuses on the difference between teachers' and administrators' self-efficacy perceptions based on quality child care practices. After doing a mixed methods study, I found a contradiction between the current literature and my own findings. My findings showed there was not a significant difference in teachers' self-efficacy based on years of teaching, whereas the literature shows self-efficacy is a factor. My other findings showed that as teachers and administrators get older they tend to have more experience based on years of teaching. Another result demonstrated that those teachers and administrators that were younger showed that they had more education …

Played To The Bone: Skeletal Trauma, Assumptions Of Warfare, And An Apalachee Ballgame In Spanish La Florida, Nancy Shipley Jan 2015

Played To The Bone: Skeletal Trauma, Assumptions Of Warfare, And An Apalachee Ballgame In Spanish La Florida, Nancy Shipley

Theses & ETDs

In the study of violence, warfare and conflict are often seen as inherent among certain groups of people. This is especially true for colonial populations wherein the image of the snarling native is preserved so vividly from popular media. In this thesis, I attempt to combat those views by using bioarchaeology to show that trauma in the archaeological record is not always caused by warfare. In the first chapter I discuss a meaning of violence and its use in social context. In the second chapter, I present an overview of bioarchaeology in Spanish La Florida. The third chapter deals with …

The Written Collapse: A Comparative Evaluation Of The Terminal Classic Maya Collapse, Mariama Jones Jan 2015

The Written Collapse: A Comparative Evaluation Of The Terminal Classic Maya Collapse, Mariama Jones

Theses & ETDs

This thesis examines collapse theories of the Terminal Classic southern Maya lowland polities in the 8th and 9th centuries, with specific emphasis on Copán and Tikal. This body of work seeks to catalogue Maya collapse theories, thoroughly analyze two Maya polities and finally analyze both states through comparative study, taking special interest in the environmental and political aspects of their collapses. I have analyzed the many causes of the collapse and I have specifically examined the similarities in the collapses of Tikal and Copán, in an attempt to explain the timelines of their collapses. While there has been dissension on …

Dehumanization In Varlam Shalamov’S Kolyma Tales, Alan Sachnowski Jan 2015

Dehumanization In Varlam Shalamov’S Kolyma Tales, Alan Sachnowski

Theses & ETDs

This thesis seeks to interpret Varlam Shalamov’s cycle of short stories Kolyma Tales through the unifying theme of dehumanization. Chapter one examines historic and artistic interpretations of Shalamov’s work in order to substantiate the methodology used in interpreting the tales with the notion of dehumanization. The chapter then supplies an analysis of “Lend-Lease” in order to demonstrate the methodology. Chapter two analyzes “Sententious” by tracking the narrator’s body in relation to his surroundings in a story of unusually long duration relative to the quick moments captured in other tales. The story is emblematic of a reversal of dehumanization to the …

The Theory Of Sex Specific Differences In Habitat Use And Migratory Behavior Shown In Great White Sharks In South Africa, Melissa Cristina Marquez

Theses & ETDs

The large-scale spatial dynamics and population structure of marine top predators are poorly known. Electronic tag and photographic identification data collected over a period of two years are presented showing a complex suite of behavioral patterns in 34 white sharks (21 female, 13 male), ranging in size from 2.5–5.1 m TL. To investigate the effects of season, sex, size, maturity of the shark and resources versus habitat use, distribution of sharks with respect to ocean current maps (cold vs. warm) and fish population maps were plotted. Data include coastal return migrations and offshore migrations, indicative that use of certain parts …

Mosquito Control To Kayak Trails: The Effects Of Mangrove Ditches On The Sarasota Bay Region, Aedan Stockdale Jan 2015

Mosquito Control To Kayak Trails: The Effects Of Mangrove Ditches On The Sarasota Bay Region, Aedan Stockdale

Theses & ETDs

Florida has lost nearly half its initial 20 million acres of tidal wetland since 1850. Much of these tidal wetlands are occupied by mangroves, a taxonomically unrelated group of trees and shrubs. Mangroves embody both a grouping of plants and an ecological community that protects the shore, harbors economically important fisheries, and provides recreational opportunities. Since the 1940s these mangrove habitats have been subject to extensive ditching and draining, severely compromising their ecological functions. The mangroves of the Sarasota Bay region are moderately fragmented and ditched habitats account for 68.4% of the total mangrove coverage. Restoration projects like that of …

“Bring Home The Salmon”: Examining The Klamath Dams And The Largest Dam Removal In World History, Darcey Evans

Theses & ETDs

The Klamath River, stretching between California and Oregon, has been used as an artery of life support by Native American peoples in the region for thousands of years. The river provides the tribal peoples with a connection to their creators, ancestors, and environment, and continuing into the 21st century, the subsistence, ceremonies, identities, and worldviews of the tribal peoples are deeply connected to the Klamath River and its surrounding landscape. During the 20th century, six dams were constructed on the Klamath River, causing unprecedented levels of ecological and cultural disruption. The four hydroelectric dams on the Klamath River are potentially …

The Manasota Culture prospered from around 500 BCE to 800 CE along the coastline that stretches from around the Tampa Bay all the way south to the northern end of Charlotte Harbor. Like many other cultures from coastal Florida, the Manasota people subsisted primarily on marine resources with some reliance on terrestrial resources. The Manasota Key Cemetery is a burial site located in the middle of Manasota Key in Englewood, Florida. Wilbur “Sonny” Cockrell excavated the site in 1989 with a team of local archaeologists and volunteers. It is one of the largest Manasota period burial sites in the region. …

From Doing To Saying: Towards A Pragmatic Theory Of Language, Matthew Broerman Jan 2015

From Doing To Saying: Towards A Pragmatic Theory Of Language, Matthew Broerman

Theses & ETDs

Philosophical accounts of discursive practice often take one of two forms. One wants to say what is distinctive about discourse, and so highlight the line that separates us from our non-speaking brethren. The other wants to say what discourse shares with strategies used to prevail over the environment, and so see it as subject to desire, power, and violence. Each account motivates a choice of vocabulary, either logical or natural, and a form of critique, either rational or genealogical. 'The force of the better argument' either refers to the force generated by argument, or the force deployed in argument. We …

Relationship Of Facebook Usage And Facebook Belongingness To Emerging Adulthood's Self-Esteem And Social Identity, Mary Marjorie Schufreider

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to examine possible relationships between emerging adulthood's involvement with Facebook and their sense of social identity and level of self-esteem. Based on the results that measured Facebook belongingness, self-esteem, Facebook identity, and social comparison, there were significant findings that suggested there is a relationship between the amount of time spent on Facebook and one's level of self-esteem, amount of time spent on Facebook and Facebook belongingness, as well as Facebook belongingness and Facebook identity. Further research needs to be done to evaluate differences in gender, race, and sexual orientation.

MOT Student Capstones

As the American population continues to age the number of individuals ages 60 and over that will need full-time care will eventually outweigh the number of people 15 and under needing care. The total cost of care for the elderly individual will continue to rise due to an increased need for assist in institutional care. The elderly entering institutional care will experience physical, mental, emotional, and social changes that will influence their overall health and wellbeing. These changes can potentially start a domino effect that can lead to multiple comorbidities and global decline in abilities. Finding ways to promote positive …

Toward A More Accurate Estimate Of The Prevalence Of Hepatitis C In The United States, Brian R. Edlin, Benjamin J. Eckhardt, Marla A. Shu, Scott D. Holmberg, Tracy Swan

United States Public Health Resources

Data from the 2003-2010 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) indicate that about 3.6 million people in the United States have antibodies to the hepatitis C virus, of whom 2.7 million are currently infected. NHANES, however, excludes several high-risk populations from its sampling frame, including people who are incarcerated, homeless, or hospitalized; nursing home residents; active-duty military personnel; and people living on Indian reservations. We undertook a systematic review of peer-reviewed literature and sought out unpublished presentations and data to estimate the prevalence of hepatitis C in these excluded populations and in turn improve the estimate of the number of …
