Neurowhat? Neurorhetoric: The Marriage Of Rhetoric And Neuroscience, Emily S. Hall

Consortium Library Prize Winners

In 1990 president George Bush senior made an official proclamation that the 1990s would be the “Decade of the Brain.” But interest in the brain did not stop after 1999, it only continued to grow. In 2013 president Barack Obama proposed the BRAIN initiative, Brain Research Through Advancing Innovative Neurotechnologies. Bush and Obama state that advances in neuroscience are getting science closer to creating better treatments and cures for brain disease and mental illness, like Parkinson’s, epilepsy, schizophrenia, and PTSD. But neuroscience advancements have become of interest to more than the presidents and the medical community. The media and the …

Outpatient Care In Fairbanks: Supporting People With Schizophrenia, Alex Wiley Apr 2015

Outpatient Care In Fairbanks: Supporting People With Schizophrenia, Alex Wiley

Counseling

With the current lack of residential treatment facilities, long-term hospitalization, and mental health agencies that can fully support people with schizophrenia in Fairbanks, Alaska, there are many ethical concerns that must be addressed to best support clients with schizophrenia. The ethical considerations present in the success of outpatient care include: a) promoting the welfare of clients, b) utilizing plans that offer reasonable promise of success, c) understanding the limits imposed on the support networks of these clients, and d) the limitations of employment opportunities for these clients in an outpatient setting. Reviewing literature on the experiences of people with schizophrenia …

BACKGROUND: Many cases of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) are diagnosed only after significant loss of lung function or during exacerbations.

AIMS: This study is part of a multi-method approach to develop a new screening instrument for identifying undiagnosed, clinically significant COPD in primary care.

METHODS: Subjects with varied histories of COPD diagnosis, risk factors and history of exacerbations were recruited through five US clinics (four pulmonary, one primary care). Phase I: Eight focus groups and six telephone interviews were conducted to elicit descriptions of risk factors for COPD, recent or historical acute respiratory events, and symptoms to inform the …

The Gut Microbiota Of Rural Papua New Guineans: Composition, Diversity Patterns, And Ecological Processes, Ines Martinez, James C. Stegen, Maria X. Maldonado-Gomez, A. Murat Eren, Peter M. Siba, Andrew R. Greenhill, Jens Walter Apr 2015

The Gut Microbiota Of Rural Papua New Guineans: Composition, Diversity Patterns, And Ecological Processes, Ines Martinez, James C. Stegen, Maria X. Maldonado-Gomez, A. Murat Eren, Peter M. Siba, Andrew R. Greenhill, Jens Walter

Department of Food Science and Technology: Faculty Publications

Although recent research revealed an impact of westernization on diversity and composition of the human gut microbiota, the exact consequences on metacommunity characteristics are insufficiently understood, and the underlying ecological mechanisms have not been elucidated. Here, we have compared the fecal microbiota of adults from two non-industrialized regions in Papua New Guinea (PNG) with that of United States (US) residents. Papua New Guineans harbor communities with greater bacterial diversity, lower inter-individual variation, vastly different abundance profiles, and bacterial lineages undetectable in US residents. A quantification of the ecological processes that govern community assembly identified bacterial dispersal as the dominant process …

Management Of The Hospitalized Transplant Patient., Brian P. Boerner, Vijay Shivaswamy, Whitney Goldner, Jennifer Larsen Apr 2015

Management Of The Hospitalized Transplant Patient., Brian P. Boerner, Vijay Shivaswamy, Whitney Goldner, Jennifer Larsen

Journal Articles: Diabetes, Endocrinology & Metabolism

Significant hyperglycemia is commonly observed immediately after solid organ and bone marrow transplant as well as with subsequent hospitalizations. Surgery and procedures are well known to cause pain and stress leading to secretion of cytokines and other hormones known to aggravate insulin action. Immunosuppression required for transplant and preexisting risk are also major factors. Glucose control improves outcomes for all hospitalized patients, including transplant patients, but is often more challenging to achieve because of frequent and sometimes unpredictable changes in immunosuppression doses, renal function, and nutrition. As a result, risk of hypoglycemia can be greater in this patient group when …

Indigenous Land Rights In Costa Rica: The Gendered Experience, Michelle Anderson Apr 2015

Indigenous Land Rights In Costa Rica: The Gendered Experience, Michelle Anderson

Collection of Engaged Learning

This paper examines the experience of indigenous women in Costa Rica, specifically the Broran, in regards to land rights violations. Using international law on women’s rights, land rights, and indigenous rights as a backdrop, this paper coalesces qualitative research on domestic attitudes towards indigenous communities with qualitative research on the effects and response of indigenous Broran women to the experience of continued land loss. Specifically examining the experience of indigenous women in this struggle reveals women’s key role in maintaining culture in the face of land loss even in the context of an extremely place-based identity, arguing that indigenous women …
