Efficiency And Safety Of A Continuous Rotation Instrumentation System And A Reciprocating Motion Instrumentation System: A Randomized Clinical Trial, Justin P. Farmer

Master's Theses

Introduction: It has been suggested that single-file reciprocating systems, such as WaveOne, are capable of more rapid root canal instrumentation compared to systems that utilize multi-file continuous rotation. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the efficiency and safety of WaveOne and ProTaper Next instrumentation systems in vivo in a randomized clinical trial. The null hypothesis was that no differences would be seen in canal preparation time, working length control, or occurrence of adverse events. Materials and Methods: A total of 89 teeth requiring primary non-surgical endodontic treatment were included in the study. Root canal therapy was performed per …

Human Preferences For Conformation Attributes And Head-And-Neck Positions In Horses, Georgina L. Caspar, Navneet Dhand, Paul Mcgreevy Jun 2015

Human Preferences For Conformation Attributes And Head-And-Neck Positions In Horses, Georgina L. Caspar, Navneet Dhand, Paul Mcgreevy

Competitive Animal Racing Collection

Human preferences for certain morphological attributes among domestic animals may be entirely individual or, more generally, may reflect evolutionary pressures that favor certain conformation. Artificial selection for attributes, such as short heads and crested necks of horses, may have functional and welfare implications because there is evidence from other species that skull shape co-varies with behaviour. Crested necks can be accentuated by flexion of the neck, a quality that is often manipulated in photographs vendors use when selling horses. Equine head-and-neck positions acquired through rein tension can compromise welfare. Our investigation was designed to identify conformations and postures that people …

Higher Hepatic Mir-29 Expression In Undernourished Male Rats During The Postnatal Period Targets The Long-Term Repression Of Insulin-Like Growth Factor 1, Gurjeev Sohi, Andrew Revesz, Julie Ramkumar, Daniel B. Hardy Jun 2015

Hardy

Physiology and Pharmacology Publications

A nutritional mismatch in postnatal life of low birth weight offspring increases the risk of developing the metabolic syndrome. Moreover, this is associated with decreased hepatic insulin-like growth factor 1 (Igf1) expression, leading to impaired growth and metabolism. Previously we have demonstrated that the timing of nutritional restoration in perinatal life can differentially programhepatic gene expression. While micro RNAs also play an important role in silencing gene expression, to date, the impact of a nutritional mismatch in neonatal life on their long-term expression has not been evaluated. Given the complementarity of miR-29 to the 3i-UTR of Igf1, we examined how …

Mobas: Identification Of Disease-Associated Protein Subnetworks Using Modularity-Based Scoring, Marzieh Ayati, Sinan Erten, Mark R. Chance, Mehmet Koyutürk

Faculty Scholarship

Network-based analyses are commonly used as powerful tools to interpret the findings of genome-wide association studies (GWAS) in a functional context. In particular, identification of disease-associated functional modules, i.e., highly connected protein-protein interaction (PPI) subnetworks with high aggregate disease association, are shown to be promising in uncovering the functional relationships among genes and proteins associated with diseases. An important issue in this regard is the scoring of subnetworks by integrating two quantities: disease association of individual gene products and network connectivity among proteins. Current scoring schemes either disregard the level of connectivity and focus on the aggregate disease association of …

Public Health, Universal Health Coverage, And Sustainable Development Goals: Can They Coexist?, Harald Schmidt, Lawrence O. Gostin, Ezekiel Emanuel

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

In her 2012 reconfirmation speech as WHO Director-General, Dr. Margaret Chan asserted: "universal coverage is the single most powerful concept that public health has to offer. It is our ticket to greater efficiency and better quality. It is our savior from the crushing weight of chronic noncommunicable diseases that now engulf the globe ". The UN General Assembly is currently considering proposals for Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), succeeding the Millennium Development Goals. SDGs, focusing on health, specifically includes universal health coverage (UHC) among its targets. Unquestionably, UHC is timely and fundamentally important. However, its promotion also entails substantial risks. A …

The Francis Effect... And What It Might Mean For Us In Jesuit Business Education, And Perhaps For Others, Michael J. Garanzini, S.J.

Journal of Management for Global Sustainability

The following invited essay by Dr. Michael Garanzini, S.J., is based on a talk Fr. Garanzini originally gave in July 2014 at the International Association of Jesuit Business Schools Annual World Forum on “Mobilizing the Worldwide Jesuit Network: Collaboration for Global Sustainability” at Sogang University in Seoul, Republic of Korea. Although addressed initially to the conference’s largely Jesuit business school audience, we feel its focus on Pope Francis, as a person and as a spiritual leader, speaks to the concerns of our entire global community. The publication in June 2015 of Pope Francis’ (and his many advisors’) encyclical, Laudato Si’, …

The 2014 Farm Bill: Farm Subsidies And Food Oppression, Andrea Freeman Jun 2015

The 2014 Farm Bill: Farm Subsidies And Food Oppression, Andrea Freeman

Seattle University Law Review

The 2014 Farm Bill ushered in some significant and surprising changes. One of these was that it rendered the identity of all the recipients of farm subsidies secret. Representative Larry Combest, who is now a lobbyist for agribusiness, first introduced a secrecy provision into the bill in 2000. The provision, however, only applied to subsidies made in the form of crop insurance. Until 2014, the majority of subsidies were direct payments and the identity of the people who received them was public information. In fact, the Environmental Working Group’s release of the list of recipients led to a series of …
