The Emphasis Of Physical Activity Across The Curriculum; A Positive Approach To Increased Academic Achievement, Alexandra Maldonado
The Emphasis Of Physical Activity Across The Curriculum; A Positive Approach To Increased Academic Achievement, Alexandra Maldonado
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to assess whether physical activity has an effect on academic achievement in students. The presence of a physically active lifestylehas received much support due to its physiological and mental benefits. The establishment of such a lifestyle should begin at an early age; however, there has been a recent shift away from physically active programming within the school system that could perpetuate a healthier future. Pressure to increase academic achievement has led to the reduction and elimination of opportunities for physical activity, but these actions could have an adverse impact on students (Mahar, Murphy, Rowe, …

Polyelectrolyte Coatings For Sequential Delivery Of Growth Factors: Automation And Characterization, Jennifer Etter
Master's Theses
Mimicking the body's natural healing process, which involves a variety of growth factors and cytokines produced by cells in a staged and sequential manner, has been shown to be a favorable technique in the field of tissue engineering. This project is focused on the fabrication and characterization of a polyelectrolyte multilayer (PEM) coating with and without a calcium phosphate (CaP) barrier layer capable of multiple growth factor delivery. The PEM coatings are created using a layer-by-layer (LBL) process in a dip coating machine in order to create uniform layers of oppositely charged material that can be used to deliver embedded …

Sharing and exchange are common practices for minimizing food insecurity in rural populations. The advent of markets and monetization in egalitarian indigenous populations presents an alternative means of managing risk, with the potential impact of eroding traditional networks. We test whether market involvement buffers several types of risk and reduces traditional sharing behavior among Tsimane Amerindians of the Bolivian Amazon. Results vary based on type of market integration and scale of analysis (household vs. village), consistent with the notion that local culture and ecology shape risk management strategies. Greater wealth and income were unassociated with the reliance on others for …

A Theorization On Equity: Tracing Causal Responsibility For Missing Iraqi Antiquities And Piercing Official Immunity, Robert Bejesky
A Theorization On Equity: Tracing Causal Responsibility For Missing Iraqi Antiquities And Piercing Official Immunity, Robert Bejesky
Pace International Law Review
Three weeks after the U.S.-led attack on Iraq, looters descended on the artifacts in the Iraq National Museum. Over ten thousand pieces were assumed destroyed or stolen, and the Coalition Provisional Authority estimated the losses at $12 billion. The gravity of the privation led the Security Council to include language in Resolution 1483 to restrict countries from trading in Iraq’s pillaged antiquities, and the U.S. Congress passed the Emergency Protection of Iraqi Cultural Antiquities Act of 2004 to enforce the measures. Several thousand pieces were recovered, but thousands remain missing. In March 2013, Hussein ash-Shamri, the head of the Iraqi …

Exotic tree pathogens can cause devastating ecological effects on forests that can be exacerbated when infections increase the likelihood of attack by insects. Current high rates of mortality of whitebark pine (Pinus albicaulis Engelm.) are due to white pine blister rust caused by the exotic fungus, Cronartium ribicola J.C. Fisch, and the native mountain pine beetle (Dendroctonus ponderosae Hopkins). These two mortality agents interact in whitebark pine; mountain pine beetle preferentially selects white pine blister rust-infected whitebark pine over healthy trees, and likelihood of attack has been observed to increase with infection severity. We examined attack and emergence …

Globally half of all diabetes mellitus is undiagnosed. We sought to determine the extent and characteristics of undiagnosed type 2 diabetes mellitus and pre-diabetes in Mexican Americans residing in the United States. This disadvantaged population with 50% lifetime risk of diabetes is a microcosm of the current pandemic. We accessed baseline data between 2004 and 2014 from 2,838 adults recruited to our Cameron County Hispanic Cohort (CCHC); a two-stage randomly selected 'Framingham-like' cohort of Mexican Americans on the US Mexico border with severe health disparities. We examined prevalence, risk factors and metabolic health in diagnosed and undiagnosed diabetes and pre-diabetes. …

Medicaid Crowd-Out Of Other Public Health Spending: Modeling Economic & Health Effects, Glen P. Mays
Health Management and Policy Presentations
MOTIVATION: Thirty states are expanding Medicaid eligibility under the Affordable Care Act (ACA) as of 2015, and while federal funds cover most costs for newly eligible recipients, states must share the additional costs of covering previously-eligible state residents who enroll in Medicaid. States, together with their local government counterparts, also provide the vast majority (87%) of public sector funds for public health programs designed to promote health and prevent disease and injury on a population-wide basis. Fiscal constraints and generous federal matching funds create strong budgetary incentives for states to channel their health-related spending to Medicaid rather than to other …

A method of detecting prostate tumorigenesis in a subject, the method including the steps of (a) obtaining a sample from the prostate of the human subject, (b) detecting quantitatively or semi-quantitatively in the sample a level of expression for PKC-ι and (c) comparing the expression level in (b) to a level of expression in a normal control, wherein overexpression of PKC-ι, with respect to the control, indicates the presence of prostate cancer in the subject. The present invention is based upon the discovery that PKC-ι levels are elevated during prostate tumorigenesis. Furthermore, the proliferation rate of the tumor correlates with …
Many Eligible Children Don’T Participate In School Nutrition Programs; Reauthorization Offers Opportunities To Improve, Jess Carson
Carsey Publications
This brief uses data from the 2013 Current Population Survey’s Food Security Supplement to document levels of participation in two of the largest programs authorized by the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010—the National School Lunch Program and the School Breakfast Program—by region and place type (rural, suburban, and city), to identify areas where expanding participation may be especially important. Author Jessica Carson reports that only 64 percent of eligible households participate in the National School Lunch Program, and 52 percent participate in the School Breakfast Program. Fifty-nine percent of eligible suburban households and 63 percent of rural households participate …
Using Peptides To Examine The Interaction Interface Between Aspartate Transcarbamoylase And Dihydroorotase In Pyrimidine Biosynthesis In Aquifex Aeolicus, Nouf Alyami
Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
Aspartate transcarbamoylase (ATCase) and Dihydroorotase (DHOase) catalyze the second and third steps, respectively, in de novo pyrimidine biosynthesis. Both enzymes form an active complex (DAC) in Aquifex aeolicus, where loop A of DHOase interacts with a domain of ATCase. The main objective of this work is to determine the function of specific residues of loop A in DAC interactions and to alter the catalytic activities through disruption of the interface between the two enzymes from A. aeolicus. The ATCase and DHOase domains have been expressed in Escherichia coli and purified using affinity chromatography. The interface of the published …

Wellness As A Mitigating Factor Against Burnout For Public School Teachers, Michelle Welch Brasfield
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
The incidence of teacher stress and burnout has been researched for many years in various geographic areas and populations. In more recent years, wellness has been proposed as a mitigating factor in reducing the incidence of burnout in the education profession. Wellness involves a holistic approach in determining the positive coping skills and practices that an individual utilizes across all life areas. Research to determine if there is a relationship between burnout and specific wellness practices may provide educational leaders with methods to assist teachers in lowering the occurrence of burnout. The professional school counselor is one educational leader who …

Akron Law Review
This paper provides criminal defense attorneys with a basic background for understanding their noncitizen clients. First, this paper presents a sociological look at immigration in Part II, including a look at modern anti-immigration sentiment, the assimilation process, and the psychological effects of readjustment. Part III explains the basics of immigration law as well as the legal backdrop for the drastic changes in the laws affecting immigrants that took place in 1996. This segment includes a discussion of the constitutional rights historically afforded aliens, as well as the ways in which the scope of those rights has been narrowed by both …

Microwave-Assisted Synthesis Of Ss-Amino Alcohols, Hinalbahen Sanket Desai
Microwave-Assisted Synthesis Of Ss-Amino Alcohols, Hinalbahen Sanket Desai
Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
ß-amino alcohols are common substructures in many biologically active compounds and can also be used as catalysts for asymmetric reactions. One common method for forming these moieties is by ring opening of unsymmetrical epoxides using amines via a substitution reaction. However, the majority of these methods requires excess of reagents, inorganic initiators, and/or extended reaction times. We have developed an efficient, regioselective route to synthesize amino alcohols via microwave-assisted aminolysis of several hindered and unhindered epoxides using amine nucleophiles of varying strengths. Microwave reactions can be done without Lewis acids or promoters, even for the most hindered trisubstituted epoxides. In …

A 58 year old female with a history of end stage renal disease on hemodialysis, insulin dependent diabetes mellitus, ischemic cardiomyopathy, and adrenal insufficiency, presented from home with altered mental status and hypotension. She developed refractory hypotension requiring vasopressors and was admitted to the medical ICU for management of septic shock due to bacterial peritonitis. She was intubated and had an oro-gastric tube placed for enteral nutrition. However, significantly elevated gastric residuals developed secondary to delayed gastric emptying. We decided to place a post-pyloric Dobhoff tube as an alternative gastric access to continue enteral feeding. Since a Cortrak machine (an …
