Chronic Idiopathic Intestinal Pseudo-Obstruction: A Working Diagnosis, Ankush Kalra, Md, Anthony Dimarino, Md
The Medicine Forum
Introduction
Chronic intestinal pseudo-obstruction (CIP) is a rare and disabling motility syndrome, yet one that demands an extensive review of digestive motility and peristaltic pathophysiology. Primarily a disorder of the small intestine, CIP was first described by Dudley and colleagues in 1958; it is defined by severe signs and symptoms of intestinal obstruction (abdominal pain and distention, nausea, vomiting, and constipation), in addition to radiographic evidence of dilated bowel in the absence of a true, mechanical obstruction. Symptoms are often slowly progressive and diagnosis requires the presence of symptoms for at least six months.1 A 2013 national survey in Japan …

Aggregate And Event-Level Associations Of Substance Use And Sexual Behavior Among Gay And Bisexual Men: Comparing Retrospective And Prospective Data, H. Jonathan Rendina, Raymond L. Moody, Ana Ventuneac, Christian Grov, Jeffrey T. Parsons
Publications and Research
Background: Despite limited research, some evidence suggests that examining substance use at multiple levels may be of greater utility in predicting sexual behavior than utilizing one level of measurement, particularly when investigating different substances simultaneously. We aimed to examine aggregated and event-level associations between three forms of substance use—alcohol, marijuana, and club drugs—and two sexual behavior outcomes—sexual engagement and condomless anal sex (CAS).
Method: Analyses focused on both 6-week timeline follow-back (TLFB; retrospective) and 30-day daily diary (prospective) data among a demographically diverse sample of 371 highly sexually active HIV-positive and HIV-negative gay and bisexual men.

Major health disparities, high levels of poverty and food insecurity exist in many Native American and Alaskan Native (AI/AN) communities. Relatively little research has been done on these issues and possible relationships between them. A research program was designed with the objective of exploring the relationships between these various issues, if any existed, in one sub-group of AI/AN. In the study, the incidence of food insecurity was determined in a convenience sample of Northern Plains Indians (NPI) and correlated with measures of physical and mental health, body composition, quality of life, cultural identification and dietary intakes. Participants were 458 adult …

Publications and Research
Sensory stimulation from foods elicits cephalic phase responses, which facilitate digestion and nutrient assimilation. One such response, cephalic-phase insulin release (CPIR), enhances glucose tolerance. Little is known about the chemosensory mechanisms that activate CPIR. We studied the contribution of the sweet taste receptor (T1r2+T1r3) to sugar-induced CPIR in C57BL/6 (B6) and T1r3 knockout (KO) mice. First, we measured insulin release and glucose tolerance following oral (i.e., normal ingestion) or intragastric (IG) administration of 2.8 M glucose. Both groups of mice exhibited a CPIR following oral but not IG administration, and this CPIR improved glucose tolerance. Second, we examined the specificity …

The 2014 public health crisis in Guinea, Liberia, and Sierra Leone has brought Ebola Viral Disease (EVD) to everyone’s attention. Discovered in 1976, this deadly disease infrequently struck in remote areas of Africa. This article will critically review the literature and describe the pathobiology, transmission, signs and symptoms, diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of EVDwhich, was predicted by the Centers for Disease Control to potentially infect 1.4 million persons in Liberia and Sierra Leone by January 2015 (“Questions and Answers”, 2014). Thankfully this worst case scenario did not occur and we may be experiencing natural burn out of the outbreak along …

International Journal of Exercise Science
International Journal of Exercise Science 8(3): 277-286, 2015. Dietary nitrate supplementation has been shown to reduce oxygen consumption at a fixed work rate. We questioned whether a similar effect would be observed during variable work rate exercise at a specific rating of perceived exertion (RPE), as is commonly prescribed for aerobic training sessions. Using a double-blind, placebo controlled, crossover design, ten females (25 ± 3 years; VO2peak 37.1 ± 5.3 ml/kg/min) performed two 20-min cycle ergometer trials at a constant RPE of 13 (somewhat hard) 2.5 hours following ingestion of 140 ml of concentrated beetroot juice (12.9 mmol …

International Journal of Exercise Science
International Journal of Exercise Science 8(3): 256-264, 2015. The purpose of this study was to assess the risk of disordered eating (DE) among female athletes in lean and non-lean sports using the ATHLETE survey. The ATHLETE survey is divided into six different constructs, and a high score indicates a high risk for DE. Eighty-three varsity female athletes from eight Campbell University sports teams completed the survey and a medical history form anonymously. The sports were divided into sports that traditionally have a high risk for DE (lean sports) and those with a low risk (non-lean sports). The lean sports included: …

Promoting Numeracy In An Online College Algebra Course Through Projects And Discussions, Samuel L. Tunstall, Michael J. Bossé
Numeracy
This research stems from efforts to infuse quantitative literacy (QL) in an online version of college algebra. College algebra fulfills a QL requirement at many universities, and it is a terminal course for most who take it. In light of the course’s traditional content and teaching methods, students often leave with little gained in QL. An online platform provides a unique means of engaging students in quantitative discussions and research, yet little research exists on online courses in the context of QL. The course studied included weekly news discussions as well as “messy” projects requiring data analysis. Students in online …

In order to assess individual’s risk of a disease, semi-parametric proportional hazards Cox models are mostly used, while fewer studies have used parametric models. The aim of the present work was to compare semi-parametric and parametric statistical methods regarding their goodness of fit. To investigate the research hypothesis, characteristics of the 3042 participants of the ATTICA epidemiological study, were used; 2583 of them were found in the 10-year follow-up (2011-2012) and 317 (15.7%) developed a cardiovascular disease event. Three multivariable models, adjusted for the same set of risk factors were compared regarding their performance, using the Bayesian Information Criterion (BIC). …

Application Of Stochastic Frontier Production Function On Small Banana Growers Of Kushtia District In Bangladesh, Md. Ashraful Alam, Md. Kamal Uddin, Md. Moyazzem Hossain
Journal of Statistics Applications & Probability
Agricultural productivity varies due to differences in production technology, differences in the setting in which production occurs and differences in the efficiency of the production process. Efficiency measurement has been the concern of researches with an aim to investigate the efficiency levels of farmers engaged in agricultural activities. Identifying determinants of efficiency levels is a major task in efficiency analysis. Moreover, estimates on the extent and sources of inefficiencies could help improve the efficiency or develop new technology to raise the banana productivity. Thus the main objective of this paper is to estimate the efficiency of the small banana grower …

Transdisciplinarity: A Review Of Its Origins, Development, And Current Issues, Jay H. Bernstein
Publications and Research
Transdisciplinarity originated in a critique of the standard configuration of knowledge in disciplines in the curriculum, including moral and ethical concerns. Pronouncements about it were first voiced between the climax of government-supported science and higher education and the long retrenchment that began in the 1970s. Early work focused on questions of epistemology and the planning of future universities and educational programs. After a lull, transdisciplinarity re-emerged in the 1990s as an urgent issue relating to the solution of new, highly complex, global concerns, beginning with climate change and sustainability and extending into many areas concerning science, technology, social problems and …

Food Sharing Among Hadza Hunter-Gatherer Children, Alyssa N. Crittenden, David A. Zes
Anthropology Faculty Research
Human prosociality is one of the defining characteristics of our species, yet the ontogeny of altruistic behavior remains poorly understood. The evolution of widespread food sharing in humans helped shape cooperation, family formation, life history, language, and the development of economies of scale. While the behavioral and ecological correlates of food sharing among adults are widely studied, very little is known about food sharing among children. Here, in the first study to analyze the food sharing patterns of hunter-gatherer children, we show that while sharing may be biased towards kin, reciprocity characterizes the majority of all sharing dyads, both related …
