Does Simulation Improve Nursing Student Knowledge, Skills, And Attitudes In Identifying Delirium Superimposed On Dementia?, Sheryl A. Kelly
Does Simulation Improve Nursing Student Knowledge, Skills, And Attitudes In Identifying Delirium Superimposed On Dementia?, Sheryl A. Kelly
Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation is comprised of three manuscripts, to be submitted for publication, exploring the use of simulation in geriatric nursing education. The first manuscript is a literature review. Although, a number of articles exist on the use of simulation in nursing education, there is a paucity of research using simulation emphasizing the care of patients with dementia and delirium as a pedagogical strategy or those using a stringent research design.
The second manuscript provides an overview of two conceptual frameworks (National League for Nursing (NLN)/Jeffries Simulation Framework and situated cognition learning framework) and recommends merging them to guide researchers as …

An Analysis Of Principals' And Teachers' Perceptions Of The Academic Impact Of 15 Social Perceptions Faced By Black Males, Janice Marie Epperson
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
When presented with 15 social perceptions, teachers differed in the extent to which they ranked such perceptions as having the most and least impact on Black male students' learning as well in the extent to which they judged these perceptions to be subject to correction. Across all repsondents, the perceptions deemed most negative concerned Black males' reputed propensity for violence and disruption, while those deemed least negative concerned Black male' alleged tendency to be more church-and -religion-oriented than their peers, as well as their reutation for being more athletically gifted than their peers. In terms of these perceptions being correctable, …

Influence Of Native And Processed Cereal Grain Fibers On Gut Health, Junyi Yang
Influence Of Native And Processed Cereal Grain Fibers On Gut Health, Junyi Yang
Department of Food Science and Technology: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Cereal fibers that can be metabolized by gut microbiota have been shown to promote the growth of beneficial bacteria in the gut. Increased consumption of cereal fibers may improve host / gut microbiota interactions in obesity and other metabolic diseases by normalizing gut dysbiosis. The present dissertation describes four research projects to assess the impact of cereal dietary fibers on gut microbiota and host metabolism. In the first study, we determined the treatment temperatures for production of soluble, non-digestible, feruloylated oligo- and polysaccharides (FOPS) from maize bran and wheat bran, and determined the fermentation properties of partially purified FOPS from …

Phylogenomic Data Help Resolve The Phylogeny Of Weevils (Superfamily Curculioinoidea), Alexander Lance Aitken
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
Superfamily Curculionoidea Latreille, 1802 (weevils) is an extraordinarily species rich clade. With 61,851 described species in 5,584 genera, weevils account for 16% of all described beetle species (389,000 species). The purpose of this thesis was to reconstruct the higher-level phylogeny of Curculionoidea using a newly developed approach for generating phylogenomic data, known as "anchored phylogenomics" (AE). This study marks the first time that AE has been used in beetles. A total of 70 weevil species from all families and most subfamilies were sampled including two outgroups. All families were recovered as monophyletic, except Nemonychidae, which was rendered paraphyletic by Anthribidae. …

The textbooks physical presence, though, is marginal compared to their theoretical presence, as textbooks can drive almost every decision a teacher makes when preparing for a day, a week, a month, the year. For example, in my 11th-grade English classes at Grafton High School in York County, Virginia, there are two levels of understanding. One is that I am teaching American literature, its development, importance, people, and purpose; the other is that everything I teach will, in some way, better prepare my students for their SOL test at the end of the year. The textbook has been laid …

Background: A variant (rs1495741) in the gene for the N-acetyltransferase 2 (NAT2) protein is associated with skin intrinsic fluorescence (SIF), a noninvasive measure of advanced glycation end products and other fluorophores in the skin. Because NAT2 is involved in caffeine metabolism, we aimed to determine whether caffeine consumption is associated with SIF and whether rs1495741 is associated with SIF independently of caffeine.
Materials and Methods: SIF was measured in 1,181 participants with type 1 diabetes from the Epidemiology of Diabetes Interventions and Complications study. Two measures of SIF were used: SIF1, using a 375-nm excitation light-emitting diode (LED), and …

With the common goal of more accurately and consistently quantifying ambient concentrations of free metal ions and natural organic ligands in aquatic ecosystems, researchers from 15 laboratories that routinely analyze trace metal speciation participated in an intercomparison of statistical methods used to model their most common type of experimental dataset, the complexometric titration. All were asked to apply statistical techniques that they were familiar with to model synthetic titration data that are typical of those obtained by applying state-of-the-art electrochemical methods – anodic stripping voltammetry (ASV) and competitive ligand equilibration-adsorptive cathodic stripping voltammetry (CLE-ACSV) – to the analysis of natural …

Beneficial Effects Of Temperate Forage Legumes That Contain Condensed Tannins, Jennifer W. Macadam, Juan J. Villalba
Wildland Resources Faculty Publications
The two temperate forage legumes containing condensed tannins (CT) that promote ruminant production are birdsfoot trefoil (Lotus corniculatus L.; BFT) and sainfoin (Onobrychis viciifolia Scop.; SF). Both are well-adapted to the cool-temperate climate and alkaline soils of the Mountain West USA. Condensed tannins comprise a diverse family of bioactive chemicals with multiple beneficial functions for ruminants, including suppression of internal parasites and enteric methane. Birdsfoot trefoil contains 10 to 40 g·CT·kg−1 dry matter (DM), while SF contains 30 to 80 g·CT·kg−1 DM. Our studies have focused on these two plant species and have demonstrated consistently elevated rates of gain for …

Evidence For Changes In Subsurface Circulation In The Late Eocene Equatorial Pacific From Radiolarian-Bound Nitrogen Isotope Values, Rebecca S. Robinson, Theodore C. Moore, Andrea M. Erhardt, Howie D. Scher
Graduate School of Oceanography Faculty Publications
Microfossil-bound organic matter represents an important archive of surface ocean environmental information. Sedimentary nitrogen (N) isotope reconstructions of surface nitrate consumption and nitrogen source changes are made using fossil diatom (autotrophs) and planktic foraminiferal (heterotrophs)-bound organic matter with success. However, because diatoms and planktic foraminifera are poorly preserved and sedimentary organic matter content is near zero during the late Eocene, our ability to examine nutrient dynamics across this important climate transition is limited. Here we present new data exploring the use of N isotope records from radiolarian tests. A comparison of surface ocean nitrate and core top bulk and radiolarian …

Historians and other researchers have begun to recognize over the last half century or so that the papers of United States senators and representatives are a treasure of information on many aspects of American life and on America's position on the world stage. These collections contain valuable data on cross-sections of the human experience, shedding light at once on political, social, familial, economic, governmental (all levels), scientific, military, racial and ethnic, environmental, and recreational developments and/or individuals involved in those various areas. Archivists face an enormous challenge in preserving and processing these collections, and making guides available that reflect the …

The Bioethics Network of Ohio (BENO) held its second annual conference on June 12, 1992 at Ohio Dominican College, Columbus, Ohio. Attendees recommended that a Task Force' review Ohio's Durable Power of Attorney for Health Care (DPAHC) and Modified Uniform Rights for the Terminally Ill (MURTIA) laws and suggest changes that would retain the basic structure of these provisions but also simplify and clarify their meaning. The Task Force completed a draft in six months and circulated it to approximately 450 individual and institutional BENO members. About one hundred members responded and this article incorporates most of their comments.

A multidisciplinary process improvement program was initiated at the University of Miami Hospital (UMH) in 2009 to identify the prevalence of hospital-acquired pressure ulcers (HAPU) at the institution and to implement interventions to reduce the incidence of HAPU. This deliberate and thoughtful committee-driven process evaluated care, monitored results, and designed evidence-based strategic initiatives to manage and reduce the rate of HAPU. As a result all inpatient beds were replaced with support surfaces, updated care delivery protocols were created, and monitored, turning schedules were addressed, and a wound, ostomy, and continence (WOC) nurse and support staff were hired. These initial interventions …

The Epidemic Of Antibiotic Resistance: A Legal Remedy To Eradicate The "Bugs" In The Treatment Of Infectious Diseases, Mike Misocky
Akron Law Review
Even though some hospitals have initiated programs aimed at curbing inappropriate antibiotic use, present day circumstances warrant a comprehensive approach to the pending epidemic. In an era where managed care organizations are prevalent and the crux of health care takes place in the community, the opportunity exists for a legal remedy to halt the progression of a possible "superbug" tyranny. This article sets forth the Antibiotic Resistance Epidemic in Part 11. Parts III and IV discuss the causative agents while emphasizing the need for a regulatory attack to the problem. The remainder of this article concentrates on a proposal to …
