Center for Social Development Research

The Ghana YouthSave Experiment investigated whether and how youth savings accounts affect financial capability; psychosocial, education, and health outcomes; and economic well-being of Ghanaian youth and their households. The research rigor in the Ghana experiment is unprecedented in resource-limited countries; therefore, it offers an opportunity to posit causal relationships between savings and youth development. This endline report, which comes three years after the baseline report, describes the Ghana experiment and presents experimental findings of YouthSave. The key research questions this report aims to answer is whether the Ghana experiment improved (1) savings patterns and performance for low-income youth; (2) low-income …

Genetics Of Plasminogen Activator Inhibitor-1 (Pai-1) In A Ghanaian Population, Marquitta J. White, Nuri M. Kodaman, Reed H. Harder, Folkert W. Asselbergs, Douglas E. Vaughan, Nancy J. Brown, Jason H. Moore, Scott M. Williams

Dartmouth Scholarship

Plasminogen activator inhibitor 1 (PAI-1), a major modulator of the fibrinolytic system, is an important factor in cardiovascular disease (CVD) susceptibility and severity. PAI-1 is highly heritable, but the few genes associated with it explain only a small portion of its variation. Studies of PAI-1 typically employ linear regression to estimate the effects of genetic variants on PAI-1 levels, but PAI-1 is not normally distributed, even after transformation. Therefore, alternative statistical methods may provide greater power to identify important genetic variants. Additionally, most genetic studies of PAI-1 have been performed on populations of European descent, limiting the generalizability of their …

The Evidence-Based Topical Therapies For Management Of Minor Burns In Outpatient Clinic, Siphora Dien, Eliza Miranda, Erdina Hardiono D Pusponegoro, Aditya Wardhana

Journal of General - Procedural Dermatology and Venereology Indonesia

Burns are often seen in clinics or hospitals. Majority of burns are minor burns, which can be managed in outpatient setting with satisfactory result. The healing outcome depends on physician’s knowledge and competencies in burn pathogenesis and basic principles of burn care. Initial treatment of burns consists of emergency evaluation, assessment of depth and severity of burns and considerations for referral. The principles of minor wound therapy include cooling, cleansing, pain management, and topical therapy. Recently, many topical agents are available and indicated for first to second degree burn. Silver sulfadiazine (SSD) is the standard treatment; however, it has some …

Effect Of Processing Technology On Composition And Concentration Of Pahs In Camellia Seed Oil, Zhu Huaming, Dai Xianjun, Zheng Ruihang Aug 2015

Effect Of Processing Technology On Composition And Concentration Of Pahs In Camellia Seed Oil, Zhu Huaming, Dai Xianjun, Zheng Ruihang

Food and Machinery

The camellia seed oil is a kind of Chinese endemic woody oil, which had the higher nutrition value and better healthy function for the body. The Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs)could be produced with the oil processing progress and affected the safety of camellia seed oil. In the experiment, the 15 ingredients of PAHs were examined in camellia seed crude oil respectively produced through five processing technologies including the low temperature squeezing, high temperature squeezing, leaching, CO2 supercritical fluid extraction and aqueous enzymatic extraction methods. The oil samples including no PAHs (concentrations<0.1 μg/kg) were respectively treated under different higher temperatures for 50 min. The concentrations of 15 PAHs ingredients were little in camellia seed oil respectively produced through the low temperature squeezing, CO2 supercritical fluid extraction and aqueous enzymatic extraction methods, and partially exceeded Chinese or international oil safety standard for the oil from high temperature squeezing and leaching methods. With the increase in processing temperature, the partial PAHs ingredients would be detected and its concentrations showed an upward trend in the treated oil. The above results indicated there was a correlation between the partial PAHs ingredients, concentrations and processing technology, and high temperature could be the main reason leading to the production of PAHs in the camellia seed oil.

Study On Color Change Of Liquid-Immersed Quick-Frozen Papaya Pulp During Frozen Storage, Yu Ming, Chen Haiqiang, Liang Zuanhao, Ye Yunqing, Yang Gongming

Food and Machinery

The color parameters(L, a, b,ΔE), lycopene content and β-carotene content of papaya pulp were determined, to study the color change of papaya pulp by liquid-immersed quick-freezing during frozen storage. The result showed:During storage, The color stability of papaya pulp by liquid-immersed quick-freezing was better than that by air convection freezing. The degradation of lycopene was the major cause of color change. Compared with the air convection freezing, liquid-immersed quick-freezing can improve the lycopene degradation activation energy by nearly 2 times, better for inhibiting the degradation to maintain stable color.

Iraqi Postgraduate Medical Journal

ABSTRACT: BACKGROUND: The Philadelphia-negative classical chronic myeloproliferative neoplasms are characterized by proliferation of one or more cell lines in the bone marrow and increased number of mature and immature cells in the peripheral blood. These myeloproliferative neoplasms include; polycythemia vera, essential thrombocythemia and idiopathic myelofibrosis, in which JAK2V617F is by far the most prevalent mutation. Because of the rapid turnover of cells in these neoplasms, derangement in the serum levels of vitamin B12 and folate is expected. OBJECTIVE: To assess the possible correlation of serum B12 and folate levels with JAK2V617F mutation in patients with polycythemia vera, essential thrombocythemia and …
