Research Progress On Cold Chain Logistics Technique Of Vegetables, Yan Can, Liu Sheng, Jia Lie, Wang Da, Zhang Xiaofang
Research Progress On Cold Chain Logistics Technique Of Vegetables, Yan Can, Liu Sheng, Jia Lie, Wang Da, Zhang Xiaofang
Food and Machinery
The postharvest vegetables have high respiration rate and are easy to perish at high temperature with high moisture. Therefore, it is very important for postharvest vegetables to precool the temperature approach the appropriate storage temperature. Then the vegetables are stored, transported, sold and preserved in fridges in the condition. Cold chain logistic is a physical method, keeping qualities and prolonging the shelf life of vegetables, and then providing customers with fresh, green, safety, nutrition vegetables. In this review, the author described situations and applications of precooling, storage, transportation and marketing of vegetables at home and abroad, which provide a reference …

Childhood Obesity: What Role Does Public Policy Play?, Shannon Turbeville
Childhood Obesity: What Role Does Public Policy Play?, Shannon Turbeville
Kaleidoscope
The purpose of this review is to explore public policies that impact the health of American children and adolescents. The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) has a significant impact on school-age children’s nutritional intake. Foods provided by the NSLP have been analyzed for their nutritional content. Although these foods did not exceed the recommended total caloric intake, they were below other nutritional standards, and these shortcomings are primarily attributable to cultural preferences. Other important contributors to childhood obesity are unregulated school food items sold in vending machines. These items are becoming increasingly more prevalent in schools. Public policy is an …
The Agricultural Footprints On The Environment, Philip Houtz
The Agricultural Footprints On The Environment, Philip Houtz
Kaleidoscope
Industrialized agricultural systems have given America a convenient and affordable means to supply a surplus of food products to its citizens. Transgenic technology, synthesized fertilizers, advanced pesticides, concentrated animal feeding operations (CAFOs), and the use of farm machinery have all contributed to humanity’s ability to feed the world’s rapidly growing population. However, the energy-intensive food operation of today may not be as ideal as we assume. Fossil fuels are burned to meet the energy requirements for the continual production of large quantities of fertilizer and to keep farm machines operational. Fertilizer and pesticide runoff from farmland ultimately drains into rivers …

Regulation Of Chemical Risks: Lessons For Reform Of The Toxic Substances Control Act From Canada And The European Union, Adam D.K. Abelkop, John D. Graham
Pace Environmental Law Review
The purpose of this Article is to compare the regulatory systems in Canada and the EU, and use comparative insights to draw some lessons that may be of interest to U.S. policy makers engaged in TSCA reform. CEPA and REACH are seen by stakeholders as state of the art in chemicals assessment and management, and thus the U.S. may draw useful insights from them. Indeed, the European Union and Canada have each been urging other countries to join in a globalization of the REACH or Canadian programs, respectively. Regardless of what TSCA reformers choose to learn from the Canadian and …

Summary Report Of Key Findings For New South Wales Catholic Education Schools: Catholic Education New South Wales - How Are Primary Education Health And Physical Education (Hpe) Teachers Best Prepared?, Tj Lynch
Plymouth Institute of Education
Health and Physical Education (HPE) as an Australian curriculum learning area is associated with holistic lifelong health and wellbeing. Research suggests that the optimum time for children to learn and refine their motor skills and to be introduced to positive HPE experiences is during preschool and early primary school years. This report presents the key findings of an investigation into primary school principals’ perceptions of a university pre-service teacher education course where the graduate teacher is qualified as both a generalist primary classroom teacher and a HPE specialist.

This paper examines a 300-hour fieldwork internship that took place during a summer semester at a local non-profit called the Food Education Project (FEP). FEP provided a practical and hands- on opportunity, which allowed for the knowledge gained over the past two years at the University of San Francisco’s Public Health Program to be put to public health practice. The experience was invaluable for the author’s professional and personal growth.
The paper will explore the prevalence of obesity and type II diabetes in the nation’s youth today. Second, a literature review will be conducted to examine the relevance of in …
The Role Of Public Libraries In Addressing Food Insecurity: A Model For Community Feeding, Monica De La Cruz
The Role Of Public Libraries In Addressing Food Insecurity: A Model For Community Feeding, Monica De La Cruz
Master's Projects and Capstones
Food insecurity is a serious problem in the United States. Not having enough food to eat can negatively impact children more severely than adults. Children who are food insecure are more likely to suffer from a range of physical, mental, and developmental delays in growth. There is prior evidence that the effects of food insecurity in children can be ameliorated through national feeding programs, like the National School Lunch Program (NSLP), which provides daily lunch at school for eligible low-income children. Though these types of programs are considered successful in addressing food insecurity within the community, the lack of these …

Engaging San Francisco’S Western Addition In A Community Needs Assessment: A Field Work Report, Bridget Walsh-Dahlberg
Master's Projects and Capstones
San Francisco’s Western Addition is a neighborhood steeped in a history of discriminative policies and actions. Today, while the Western is a vibrant community, it continues to feel the effects of the historic discriminatory practices. This is evident in the disparities seen across many indicators, including: educational success and attainment; health; employment; and housing opportunities. Engage San Francisco, an initiative born from the University of San Francisco’s Leo T. McCarthy for Public Service and Common Good seeks to help improve the lives and success of children, youth and families in the Western Addition through community identified needs. Through campus-community relationships …

Bringing The Elephant Into The Room: Integrating Risk Into Interdisciplinary Water Programs, Laura Read, Laura Kuhl
Bringing The Elephant Into The Room: Integrating Risk Into Interdisciplinary Water Programs, Laura Read, Laura Kuhl
Journal of Contemporary Water Research and Education
Problems that require risk management are usually cross-disciplinary in nature, which makes it difficult to educate students and professionals on common language, skills, and strategies. Recognition of the interdisciplinary nature of many water challenges in terms of quality, allocation, future supply, infrastructure, damages, etc. has led to the establishment of interdisciplinary graduate water programs. Motivated by experience in an interdisciplinary water program at Tufts University, this paper argues that explicit coverage of the subject of risk is an important component of an interdisciplinary water training program, and that understanding risk should be a core competency of a water professional. The …
The Human And Environmental Health Impacts Of Food Quality Among Emergency Food Providers, Alexina Cather
The Human And Environmental Health Impacts Of Food Quality Among Emergency Food Providers, Alexina Cather
Master's Projects and Capstones
Abstract
Human health and environmental health are inextricably entwined, and the ways in which we grow, process, package, transport, market, and consume food are critical factors for both human and environmental health. The current industrial food system in the United States has numerous adverse effects on environmental and human health, which significantly impact the millions of food insecure Americans who receive their nutritional needs from emergency food providers (American Public Health Association, 2007). The widespread food insecurity in the United States and the increasing prevalence of obesity among adults and children have drawn attention to the role that emergency food …

Master's Projects and Capstones
San Francisco IHSS (In Home Supportive Services) Public Authority serves over 2,000 consumers and this number is growing daily due to the amount of people in need here in San Francisco. The consumers are in need of providers. Currently there is a lack of well-trained providers to aid in meeting the needs of the consumers. This has lead to consumers going back to hospital for injuries and other complications that could have been avoided if they had providers who were properly trained on their condition. This is not the purpose of IHSSPA, they receive funding to prevent hospital recidivism but …

Hexabromocyclododecane And Tetrabromobisphenol A Alter Secretion Of Interferon Gamma (Ifn-Γ) From Human Immune Cells, Haifa Almughamsi, Margaret M. Whalen
Chemistry Faculty Research
Hexabromocyclododecane (HBCD) and tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBPA) are brominated flame-retardant compounds used in a variety of applications including insulation, upholstery, and epoxy resin circuit boards. Interferon gamma (IFN-γ) is an inflammatory cytokine produced by activated T and NK cells that regulates immune responsiveness. HBCD and TBBPA are found in human blood, and previous studies have shown that they alter the ability of human natural killer (NK) lymphocytes to destroy tumor cells. This study examines whether HBCD and TBBPA affect the secretion of IFN-γ from increasingly complex preparations of human immune cells—purified NK cells, monocyte-depleted (MD) peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs), and …

Is Soil Quality Linked To Psnp Graduation In East And West Hararghe, Ethiopia?, Elizabeth Gladding
Capstone Collection
Many households in Ethiopia have struggled to remain food secure and meet their nutritional needs. In response to chronic food insecurity the Ethiopian government developed the Productive Safety Net Program (PSNP) to provide support to households in the form of food or cash transfers in exchange for public service work. The idea of the program is that households will develop their livelihoods through the public work and eventually become self-sufficient, food secure and graduate from the PSNP.
Some households graduate from PSNP in a shorter time than others, attributing to many different factors. This study looks at soil quality as …

Early Mortality And Functional Outcome After Acute Stroke In Uganda: Prospective Study With 30 Day Follow-Up, Martha Sajatovic
Faculty Scholarship
Identification of early outcomes post stroke and their predictors is important in stroke management strategies. We prospectively analysed 30-day outcomes (mortality and functional ability) after stroke and their predictors among patients admitted within 7 days post event to a national referral hospital in Uganda. This was a prospective study of acute stroke patients consecutively enrolled between February and July 2014. Social demographics, clinical, laboratory, imaging characteristics, outcomes (all through 30 days), time of death were assessed using standardised questionnaires. Multiple regression was used to analyse the independent influence of factors on outcomes. Of 127 patients, 88 (69.3 %) had ischemic …

Journal Articles
Lion-tailed macaques are generally considered to have more despotic than egalitarian dominance relationships; however, research lacks any conclusive evidence. In the present study, we examined dominance relationships among the females (of which the genealogical relationships were known) of a captive female-only group of lion-tailed macaques (Macaca silenus) during the course of introduction of a new adult male to the group at the Wels Zoo, Wels, Austria. We determined the structure of dominance hierarchy and the corresponding changes in dominance relationships, possibly mediated by an increase in sexual competition among the females. When the females were housed together without any adult …

Academic-Community Partnerships Effectiveness Evaluated Beyond The Ivory Walls, Rosemary M. Caron, Jessica Ulrich-Schad, Catherine C. Lafferty
Sociology, Social Work and Anthropology Faculty Publications
Community-based participatory research (CBPR) has furthered our understanding of the working principles required for academic-community partnerships to address persistent public health problems. However, little is known about how effective these partnerships have been in eliminating or reducing community-based public health issues. To contribute to the literature in this area, the authors conducted a survey of U.S. schools and programs in public health and community groups working with these academic partners to: (1) identify the most common local public health issues addressed; (2) examine the characteristics of the partnership and the actual or perceived benefits and challenges for each partner; (3) …

There is something in our genome that dictates life expectancy and there is nothing that can be done to avoid this; indeed, there is not yet any record of a person who has cheated death. Our physical prowess can vacillate substantially in our lifetime according to our activity levels and nutritional status and we may fight aging, but we will inevitably lose. We have presented strong evidence that the atrophy which accompanies aging is to some extent caused by loss of innervation. We compared muscle biopsies of sedentary seniors to those of life long active seniors, and show that these …
