Feasibility Of Cathodic Protection In Grouted Post Tensioned Tendons - Exploratory Model Calculations, Jacob Dharma Bumgardner Nov 2015

Feasibility Of Cathodic Protection In Grouted Post Tensioned Tendons - Exploratory Model Calculations, Jacob Dharma Bumgardner

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Recent corrosion related failures of grouted post tensioned tendons, even after the introduction of improved grouts, have led to renewed interest in supplemental or backup means of corrosion control for these systems. A finite element model is presented to explore feasibility of impressed current cathodic protection of strand in grouted tendons. The model examines polarization evolution as function of service time and includes consideration of anode placement and size, grout porosity, pore water alkalinity, electrochemical species diffusivity and applied voltage on the polarization efficacy and durability of such a system. The exploratory model projections suggested that, within the context of …

Revising The U.S. Vertical Merger Guidelines: Policy Issues And An Interim Guide For Practitioners, Steven C. Salop, Daniel P. Culley Nov 2015

Revising The U.S. Vertical Merger Guidelines: Policy Issues And An Interim Guide For Practitioners, Steven C. Salop, Daniel P. Culley

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

Mergers and acquisitions are a major component of antitrust law and practice. The U.S. antitrust agencies spend a majority of their time on merger enforcement. The focus of most merger review at the agencies involves horizontal mergers, that is, mergers among firms that compete at the same level of production or distribution.

Vertical mergers combine firms at different levels of production or distribution. In the simplest case, a vertical merger joins together a firm that produces an input (and competes in an input market) with a firm that uses that input to produce output (and competes in an output market). …

Effects Of Competing News Media Frames Of Weight On Antifat Stigma, Beliefs About Weight, And Support For Obesity-Related Public Policies, David Frederick, Abigail C. Saguy, Gaganjyot Sandhu, Traci Mann Nov 2015

Effects Of Competing News Media Frames Of Weight On Antifat Stigma, Beliefs About Weight, And Support For Obesity-Related Public Policies, David Frederick, Abigail C. Saguy, Gaganjyot Sandhu, Traci Mann

Psychology Faculty Articles and Research

Objectives: In the popular news media, public health officials routinely emphasize the health risks of obesity and portray weight as under personal control. These messages may increase support for policies designed to reduce rates of obesity, but can also increase antifat stigma. Less often, the media cover "Health at Every Size" or "Fat Rights" perspectives, which may have the opposite effects. We investigated how exposure to different "fat frames" shifts attitudes about weight and support for obesity policies. Methods: Across four experiments (N = 2187), people read constructed news articles framing fatness as negative (unhealthy, controllable, acceptable to …

Theory At Yale: The Strange Case Of Deconstruction In America [Table Of Contents], Marc Redfield Nov 2015

Theory At Yale: The Strange Case Of Deconstruction In America [Table Of Contents], Marc Redfield

Literature

This book examines the affinity between “theory” and “deconstruction” that developed in the American academy in the 1970s by way of the “Yale Critics”: Harold Bloom, Paul de Man, Geoffrey Hartman, and J. Hillis Miller, sometimes joined by the French philosopher Jacques Derrida.

With this semi-fictional collective, theory became a media event, first in the academy and then in the wider print media, in and through its phantasmatic link with deconstruction and with “Yale.” The important role played by aesthetic humanism in American pedagogical discourse provides a context for understanding theory as an aesthetic scandal, and an examination of the …

Realizing The Witch: Science, Cinema, And The Mastery Of The Invisible [Table Of Contents], Richard Baxstrom, Todd Meyers Nov 2015

Realizing The Witch: Science, Cinema, And The Mastery Of The Invisible [Table Of Contents], Richard Baxstrom, Todd Meyers

Cinema & Media Studies

Benjamin Christensen’s Häxan (The Witch, 1922) stands as a singular film within the history of cinema. Deftly weaving contemporary scientific analysis and powerfully staged historical scenes of satanic initiation, confession under torture, possession, and persecution, Häxan creatively blends spectacle and argument to provoke a humanist re-evaluation of witchcraft in European history as well as the contemporary treatment of female “hysterics” and the mentally ill.

In Realizing the Witch, Baxstrom and Meyers show how Häxan opens a window onto wider debates in the 1920s regarding the relationship of film to scientific evidence, the evolving study of religion from historical and …

Modeling Perfusion At Small Scale Using Ambr15tm, Dustin Davis, Delia Lyons, Scott Ross

Integrated Continuous Biomanufacturing II

Reaching cell densities higher than 80 million with the minimum possible perfusion rates is a goal for an increasing proportion of processes developed by biopharmaceutical companies. With the goal of fulfilling the industry needs for better commercial and customized perfusion media, SAFC evaluated different small-scale perfusion models to achieve an efficient work flow that can accommodate perfusion systems. SAFC successfully uses an optimized work flow for the development of media and feeds for fed-batch cell culture that integrates high-throughput screening, statistical tools and bench-top bioreactor scale studies. In this model, 96-deep well plates are used for the initial high throughput …

Biosc® Predict Simulation Software: Flexibility And Optimization Of Your Multi-Column Process, Fabien Rousset

Integrated Continuous Biomanufacturing II

For a few years now, the biopharma industry has started implementing continuous processing, and more specifically continuous chromatography, to improve process economics together with process control and understanding. A simulation / optimization software has been developed to benefit from modelization by accommodating batch process data to multicolumn processes with associated optimal operating costs and reduced footprint. The presentation will highlight how the flexibility of the BioSC® and its simulation software BioSC® Predict is used to optimize affinity, ion exchange and isocratic processes in order to decrease media and buffer consumption and save lab operating time.

A Novel Plant Cell Culture Platform For Semicontinous Production Of Recombinant Proteins: Butyrylcholinesterase As A Case Study, Jasmine Corbin, Bryce Hashimoto, Kalimuthu Karuppanan, Raymond Rodriguez, Somen Nandi, Brian Roberts, Amy Noe, Karen Mcdonald

Integrated Continuous Biomanufacturing II

In this paper we describe a novel biomanufacturing production platform that utilizes transgenic rice cell suspension cultures for efficient semicontinuous cell culture (SCC) production of recombinant proteins. The production platform utilizes a metabolically regulated promoter, a secretion signal peptide that enables secretion out of the cell for ease of recovery/purification, coupled with an efficient semicontinuous operational strategy that allows independent optimization of growth and production phases. In addition, long term operation (up several months1) is possible by maintaining viable biomass within the bioreactor, thereby reducing the need for long seed trains, as well as minimizing turn-around time, CIP …

Impact Of Closed And Continuous Processing On Biopharmaceutical Facility Layouts, Marc Pelletier Nov 2015

Impact Of Closed And Continuous Processing On Biopharmaceutical Facility Layouts, Marc Pelletier

Integrated Continuous Biomanufacturing II

In response to the uncertainty of ever-changing product pipelines, the biotech industry has been driven to develop flexible manufacturing solutions. These facilities can mobilize quickly to provide a nimble response to sudden changes in production demands. The industry has concurrently improved its ability to assess and effectively mitigate risks to manufacturing processes by developing engineering solutions that isolate the bioprocess from the environment housing it. This presentation will illustrate how the implementation of continuous closed bioprocessing impacts the design of biopharmaceutical manufacturing facilities. The impact of closed continuous bioprocessing on facility size, capital cost and operating cost will also be …

Design Of A Continuous Precipitation Operation For Protein Capture, Todd Przybycien, Orlando Jaquez, Robert Gronkel Nov 2015

Design Of A Continuous Precipitation Operation For Protein Capture, Todd Przybycien, Orlando Jaquez, Robert Gronkel

Integrated Continuous Biomanufacturing II

Increasing product titers challenge chromatographic separations and play to the strengths of bulk separation techniques such as precipitation and liquid-liquid extraction. Further, bulk separation techniques lend themselves readily to true continuous operation without complex equipment. Here we describe the design of a continuous precipitation process for the capture of monoclonal antibodies from concentrated (~100 g/L) cell culture media. A continuous tubular reactor design with static mixing elements was implemented to ensure that each fluid element experienced the same mixing conditions between target and precipitant streams and the same overall fluid shear rate history. The continuous tubular format also permitted the …

Factors Affecting The Productivity Of 4-Column Periodic Counter Current Chromatography (4c-Pcc), Hani El-Sabbahy, Laura Fagan, Verity Nancollis Nov 2015

Factors Affecting The Productivity Of 4-Column Periodic Counter Current Chromatography (4c-Pcc), Hani El-Sabbahy, Laura Fagan, Verity Nancollis

Integrated Continuous Biomanufacturing II

The advantages of continuous bioprocessing include steady state operation, reduced equipment footprint, high volumetric productivity, streamlined process flow, and reduced capital cost. These benefits have led to considerable interest in evaluating these technologies for the purposes of bioprocess intensification (Konstantinov & Cooney, 2014). It has been shown, through cost of goods modelling, that the cost of protein A is one of the most significant costs in a MAb process, and that decreasing the cost of protein A by maximising loading or increasing lifetime will have a significant effect on consumable costs (Broly, et al., 2010). Consequently, the application of continuous …

What Is Holding The Industry Back From Implementing Cbp (Continuous Bioprocessing) More Broadly?, Morten Munk Nov 2015

What Is Holding The Industry Back From Implementing Cbp (Continuous Bioprocessing) More Broadly?, Morten Munk

Integrated Continuous Biomanufacturing II

Introduction: Advances in pharmaceutical manufacturing technology in the last decade provide new opportunities to reinvigorate and improve the quality of pharmaceutical manufacturing. One of those technologies is Continuous Processing, which offers a wide range of advantages. Traditionally, most focus has centred on the cost advantages while the industry has held back on more broadly implementing Continuous Process. One reason for this reluctance concerns the viewpoint on the technology from the authorities, particularly FDA and EMA.

This presentation will discuss the results from a survey of industry peers performed by BioPlan Associates for NNE Pharmaplan. The focus of the survey is …

Novel Compact Cell Settlers For Continuous Perfusion Bioreactor Cultures Of Microbial (And Mammalian) Cells, Dhinakar Kompala, Brian Batt Nov 2015

Novel Compact Cell Settlers For Continuous Perfusion Bioreactor Cultures Of Microbial (And Mammalian) Cells, Dhinakar Kompala, Brian Batt

Integrated Continuous Biomanufacturing II

About 25 years ago, we first demonstrated the use of inclined settlers for selective removal of dead cells and cell debris and complete recycle of live and productive cells back to perfusion bioreactors with murine hybridoma cells (Batt et al., 1990) and Chinese hamster ovary cells (Searles et al., 1994). These devices have been scaled up as lamellar settlers (Probstein and Yung, 1979) and applied successfully over the last two decades for commercial manufacture of several therapeutic biologics in high cell density continuous perfusion bioreactor cultures of recombinant mammalian cells by different biotech companies. However, the rectilinear scale up of …

Tools For Process Intensification Upstream And Continuous Processing Downstream, James Rusche Nov 2015

Tools For Process Intensification Upstream And Continuous Processing Downstream, James Rusche

Integrated Continuous Biomanufacturing II

The intensification of cell culture production and continuous downstream processing are two important features of many new biomanufacturing schemes. Perfusion of cell culture bioreactors using an alternating tangential flow (ATF) device can increase viable cell density 5-10 fold and can be used to continuously harvest product suitable for immediate downstream processing. Perfusion can also be applied to high density cell banking and preparation of N-1 cell inoculum to greatly accelerate production turnover in fed batch processes. The capture of continuous upstream production can be made practical by prepacked columns of uniform performance and rapid load using low aspect ratio columns. …

Evaluation Of Mammography Screening And Awareness Health Promotion Interventions Targeting Women With Disabilities: A Systematic Literature Review, Frances Irene Esquibel

Public Administration ETDs

Research evaluating the effectiveness of health promotion interventions that aim to increase mammography utilization and or awareness among women with disabilities is extremely limited. The purpose of this thesis was to systematically review the literature that does exist, and examine the effectiveness and methodological rigor of various health promotion interventions, that aim to increase mammography utilization among women with disabilities. This thesis followed a five-step systematic review process: framing of the research question, identification of relevant work, extraction of relevant data on outcomes and quality, summarization of evidence, and interpretation of evidence. The sample consisted of eight articles that were …
