Reference Points

A Soft Spot in a Hard Place, edited by Zachary Gough with Thomas Gokey, Max Haiven, and Cassie Thornton, is a small collection of texts and conversations that contributes to the project of understanding how creativity, art, and the imagination might help us refigure our relationship to money, debt, capitalism, and our economic lives as a whole.

This book is part of the Reference Points series published through Portland State University Art and Social Practice MFA Program. The series is an evolving pedagogical framework in which graduate students formulate and research a significant topic or practitioner(s) related to socially …

Characteristics Of Health Parameters And The Digital Cushion In Horses, Mattia Ann Gunkelman Jan 2015

Characteristics Of Health Parameters And The Digital Cushion In Horses, Mattia Ann Gunkelman

Animal Sciences

Studies examining lameness conditions and health concerns for horse owners are important for education and future research. To investigate this, a survey and two studies were conducted. For the survey, a total of 152 responses were collected. Horse owners ranked lameness as the top concern (35%), followed by colic (21%). Lameness issues were ranked as the top (37%) veterinary expense. To validate a non-invasive ultrasound technique for imaging the digital cushion, ten cadaver limbs were evaluated. There was a strong correlation (r = 0.73; p = 0.02) between ultrasound and actual measurement. To establish baseline values, 25 mature, stock-type horses …

Bioavailability And Biodegradability Of Dissolved Organic Nitrogen Originated From Municipal And Animal Wastewater, Jingyi Sun Jan 2015

Bioavailability And Biodegradability Of Dissolved Organic Nitrogen Originated From Municipal And Animal Wastewater, Jingyi Sun

Agribusiness and Biosystems Engineering

Due to the increased concern on dissolved organic nitrogen (DON) in surface waters, it is necessary to understand the biodegradability and bioavailability of DON in point and non-point sources. In this study, algae and bacteria were applied under lab condition to undestand the impact of DON to water environment. Biodegradable DON (BDON) was determined using bacteria while bioavailable DON (ABDON) was determined using green algae Selenastrum capricornutum, Chlamydomonas reinhardtii, and Chlorella vulgaris and/or mixed culture bacteria in municipal and animal wastewaters. In both wastewater sources, ABDON efficiencies (%) for all three algae were not significantly different indicating that Chlamydomonas reinhardtii …

Effects Of Corn Condensed Distillers Solubles Supplementation On Intake, Performance, Rate And Site Of Digestion, And Ruminal Fermentation In Cattle Consuming Forage-Based Diets, Lindsey Rebecca Coupe

Animal Sciences

Two studies were conducted to determine effect of feeding method and level of corn condensed distillers solubles supplementation on performance of beef cows fed forage-based diets and effects on digestibility and ruminal fermentation. Experiment 1 utilized 80 gestating crossbred cows in a randomized complete block design. Treatments were arranged in a 2 × 2 + 1 factorial design; main effects were feeding method (mixed vs. fed separately) and level of CCDS. All treatments were offered ad libitum forage. Experiment 2, utilized 5 ruminally and duodenally cannulated Holstein steers in a 5×5 Latin square to evaluate effects of CCDS supplementation on …

Factors Influencing The Passive, Innate, And Adaptive Immune System And Their Effects In Beef Cattle, James Joseph Gaspers Jan 2015

Factors Influencing The Passive, Innate, And Adaptive Immune System And Their Effects In Beef Cattle, James Joseph Gaspers

Animal Sciences

To investigate the factors influencing the passive, innate, and adaptive immune system and their effects in beef cattle, three experiments (exp.) were completed. Results from Exp. 1 indicate that there is some influence of birth weight and incidence of dystocia on the passive transfer of immunity from dam to offspring. Results from Exp. 2 indicated that supplemented dams had lower calving ease scores and tended to have greater colostrum production while their calves showed less evidence of mixed acidosis based on blood parameters of pCO2, lactate, and base excess. In Exp. 3, vaccine treatments initiated an inflammatory response with subcutaneous …

Livd: Issue 15.1: "Oh, Sherrie", Portland State University. School Of Art + Design

LIVD

Layout, imagery, and editing: Meredith James

Issue 15.1 includes contributions responding to the following prompt: Sherrie Levine. Contributors respond to the various ways Levine’s work has influenced our concept of art, design, self, and issues still central to the lives of women. Topically, the authors vary in their responses, some more direct – as in Nicole Dyar’s social criticism on the appropriation and replication of women’s identities (can an authentic woman exist in contemporary digital culture?) – while others remain more loosely / conceptually related. Sarah McCoy rectifies a noticeable gap in graphic design history, that of early colonial women …

Revisiting Rajneeshpuram: Oregon's Largest Utopian Community As Western History, Carl Abbott Jan 2015

Revisiting Rajneeshpuram: Oregon's Largest Utopian Community As Western History, Carl Abbott

Urban Studies and Planning Faculty Publications and Presentations

Between 1981 and 1985, the intentional community of Rajneeshpuram near Antelope, Oregon, hosted up to 15,000 followers of Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh, a spiritual leader from Pune, India. In this essay, Carl Abbott examines the rise and fall of Rajneeshpuram within the context of western history, which “centers on the processes of migration, settlement, displacement, and rearrangement.” Drawing parallels to earlier religious closed communities, such nineteenth century Mormon settlements, Abbott describes how Rajneeshees fit into the “overarching storylines of frontier utopias and the…narrative of settler colonialism.” Unlike Mormon communities, however, Abbott concludes that Rajneeshpuram ultimately failed because its leaders were not …

Radical Uncertainty: Scenario Planning For Futures, Marisa A. Zapata, Nikhil Kaza Jan 2015

Radical Uncertainty: Scenario Planning For Futures, Marisa A. Zapata, Nikhil Kaza

Urban Studies and Planning Faculty Publications and Presentations

The use of scenario planning in urban and regional planning practice has grown in the last decade as one way to face uncertainty. However, in adapting scenario planning from its origins in the business sector, planners have eliminated two key components: (1) the use of multiple scenarios, and (2) the inclusion of diverse organizations, people, and interests through deep deliberations. We argue that this shift limits the ability of planners to plan for multiple plausible futures that are shaped by an increasing number of diverse actors. In this paper, we use case-study research to examine how uncertainty was considered in …

Comparing Two Common Approaches To Public Transit Service Equity Evaluation, Alex Karner, Aaron Golub Jan 2015

Comparing Two Common Approaches To Public Transit Service Equity Evaluation, Alex Karner, Aaron Golub

Urban Studies and Planning Faculty Publications and Presentations

Understanding the equity effects of transit service changes requires good information about the demographics of transit ridership. Both on-board survey data and census data can be used to estimate equity effects, though there is no clear reason these two sources will result in the same finding of impact. Guidance from the Federal Transit Administration (FTA) recommends using either of these data sources to estimate equity impacts. This article makes a direct comparison of the two methods for the public transit system in the Phoenix, Arizona metropolitan area. The results indicate that, although both sources are acceptable for FTA compliance, the …

Freedom As A Natural Phenomenon, Martin Zwick Jan 2015

Freedom As A Natural Phenomenon, Martin Zwick

Complex Systems Faculty Publications and Presentations

"Freedom" is a phenomenon in the natural world. This phenomenon - and indirectly the question of free will - is explored using a variety of systems-theoretic ideas. It is argued that freedom can emerge only in systems that are partially detennined and partially random, and that freedom is a matter of degree. The paper considers types of freedom and their conditions of possibility in simple living systems and in complex living systems that have modeling (cognitive) subsystems. In simple living systems, types of freedom include independence from fixed materiality, internal rather than external detennination, activeness that is unblocked and holistic, …

Gaining Policy Insight With A System Dynamics Model Of Pain Medicine Prescribing, Diversion And Abuse, Wayne Wakeland, Alexandra E. Nielsen, Teresa D. Schmidt Jan 2015

Gaining Policy Insight With A System Dynamics Model Of Pain Medicine Prescribing, Diversion And Abuse, Wayne Wakeland, Alexandra E. Nielsen, Teresa D. Schmidt

Complex Systems Faculty Publications and Presentations

Misuse of pain medicine is a leading cause of accidental deaths in the USA—over 15,000 deaths annually. A system dynamics model was developed and used to study the impact of three types of policy interventions to reduce adverse outcomes. Besides medical usage, the model also includes the diversion of pain medicines and their nonmedical use. Model behavior compared favourably with historical data at multiple points in the system. A prescription drug monitoring program intervention reduced nonmedical overdoses through supply restriction, and an intervention to reduce popularity of nonmedical usage reduced nonmedical overdoses by curtailing demand. A tamper-resistant drug formulation intervention …

An Expanded Perceptual Laboratory: Public Art And The Cinematic Techniques Of Superimposition, Montage And Apparatus/Dispositif, Dave Colangelo

School of Film Faculty Publications and Presentations

The use of the moving image in public space extends the techniques of cinema— namely superimposition, montage and apparatus/dispositif—threatening either to dehistoricize and distract or to provide new narrative and associative possibilities via public art. These techniques also serve as helpful tools for analysis drawn from cinema studies that can be applied to examples of the moving image in public space. Historical examples include the multi-screen experiments of Charles and Ray Eames; and contemporary public projections such as Krzysztof Wodiczko’s Abraham Lincoln: War Veteran Projection, Robert Lepage’s The Image Mill, my own project entitled Workers That Live in the Mirror, …

University Studies Annual Assessment Reports

During the 14-15 academic year, University Studies (UNST) adopted a “Goal of the Year,” communication. We introduced a new writing rubric, piloted the rubric and used it to review Freshman Inquiry (FRINQ) ePortfolios and Sophomore Inquiry (SINQ) writing samples. We investigated the usefulness of the rubric, the types of writing being asked of our students and how well our students’ writing reflects our expectations for their learning. At the Capstone level, we expanded our course ePortfolio assessment approach to include intentional faculty conversations about how they address the goal of communication in their courses. We continue to be interested in …

Uneven Development Of The Sustainable City: Shifting Capital In Portland, Oregon, Erin Goodling, Jamaal Green, Nathan Mcclintock Jan 2015

Uneven Development Of The Sustainable City: Shifting Capital In Portland, Oregon, Erin Goodling, Jamaal Green, Nathan Mcclintock

Urban Studies and Planning Faculty Publications and Presentations

Portland, Oregon is renowned as a paradigmatic "sustainable city". Yet, despite popular conceptions of the city as a progressive ecotopia and the accolades of planners seeking to emulate its innovations, Portland’s sustainability successes are inequitably distributed. Drawing on census data, popular media, newspaper archives, city planning documents, and secondary-source histories, we attempt to elucidate the structural origins of Portland’s "uneven development", exploring how and why the urban core of this paragon of sustainability has become more White and affluent while its outer eastside has become more diverse and poor. We explain how a "sustainability fix" – in this case, green …

Epistemic Function And Ontology Of Analog And Digital Images, Aleksandra Lukaszewicz Alcarez Jan 2015

Epistemic Function And Ontology Of Analog And Digital Images, Aleksandra Lukaszewicz Alcarez

Contemporary Aesthetics (Journal Archive)

The important epistemic function of photographic images is their active role in construction and reconstruction of our beliefs concerning the world and human identity, since we often consider photographs as presenting reality or even the Real itself. Because photography can convince people of how different social and ethnic groups and even they themselves look, documentary projects and the dissemination of photographic practices supported the transition from disciplinary society to the present-day society of control. While both analog and digital images are formed from the same basic materia, the ways in which this matter appears are distinctive. In the case of …

Performing Politics, Troy R.E. Paddock Jan 2015

Performing Politics, Troy R.E. Paddock

Contemporary Aesthetics (Journal Archive)

Walter Benjamin’s observation that fascism turns politics into aesthetics is, by now, a well-worn idea. This article argues that Benjamin’s critique of politics can apply just as much to the modern democratic politics of the United States. Borrowing from Benjamin, Jürgen Habermas, and Carl Schmitt, this article suggests that modern political discourse in the United States does not follow the classical liberal ideal of rational discourse in the marketplace of ideas within the public sphere. Instead, contemporary politics has become spectacle where images and slogans replace thought and debate in a 24/7 news cycle and political infotainment programs. The result …

Monitoring Youth: The Collision Of Rights And Rehabilitation, Kate Weisburd Jan 2015

Monitoring Youth: The Collision Of Rights And Rehabilitation, Kate Weisburd

Faculty Scholarship

A monumental shift in juvenile justice is underway, inspired by the wide recognition that incarceration is not the solution to youth crime. In its place, “electronic monitoring” has gained widespread support as a new form of judicial control over youth offenders. Supporters herald it as “jail-togo”: a cost-efficient alternative to incarceration that allows youth to be home while furthering rehabilitative and deterrent goals. But despite electronic monitoring’s intuitive appeal, virtually no empirical evidence suggests its effectiveness. Instead, given the realities of adolescent development, electronic monitoring may lead to more harm than good. This Article is the first to examine the …

Impact Of Spatial Aliasing On Sea-Ice Thickness Measurements, Cathleen Geiger, Hans-Reinhard Müller, Jesse P. Samluk, E Rachel Bernstein, Jacqueline Richter-Menge Jan 2015

Impact Of Spatial Aliasing On Sea-Ice Thickness Measurements, Cathleen Geiger, Hans-Reinhard Müller, Jesse P. Samluk, E Rachel Bernstein, Jacqueline Richter-Menge

Dartmouth Scholarship

We explore spatial aliasing of non-Gaussian distributions of sea-ice thickness. Using a heuristic model and >1000 measurements, we show how different instrument footprint sizes and shapes can cluster thickness distributions into artificial modes, thereby distorting frequency distribution, making it difficult to compare and communicate information across spatial scales. This problem has not been dealt with systematically in sea ice until now, largely because it appears to incur no significant change in integrated thickness which often serves as a volume proxy. Concomitantly, demands are increasing for thickness distribution as a resource for modeling, monitoring and forecasting air–sea fluxes and growing human …

Patent Demands And Initial Public Offerings, Robin Feldman, Evan Frondorf Jan 2015

Patent Demands And Initial Public Offerings, Robin Feldman, Evan Frondorf

Faculty Scholarship

Quantitative analysis of patent behavior is critical, as congressional and regulatory agencies consider the impact of patent trolling on modern markets. Anecdotal evidence has suggested that “non-practicing entities,” also known as “patent trolls,” specifically target companies for lawsuits, licensing demands, or other monetization activity as firms approach or complete major funding events, such as their initial public offering (IPO). To test this narrative, we survey in-house legal staff at companies that have recently gone public about their exposure to patent demands surrounding their first round of venture capital funding and their IPO. The study is one of the first attempts …
