Impact Of Spatial Aliasing On Sea-Ice Thickness Measurements, Cathleen Geiger, Hans-Reinhard Müller, Jesse P. Samluk, E Rachel Bernstein, Jacqueline Richter-Menge Jan 2015

Impact Of Spatial Aliasing On Sea-Ice Thickness Measurements, Cathleen Geiger, Hans-Reinhard Müller, Jesse P. Samluk, E Rachel Bernstein, Jacqueline Richter-Menge

Dartmouth Scholarship

We explore spatial aliasing of non-Gaussian distributions of sea-ice thickness. Using a heuristic model and >1000 measurements, we show how different instrument footprint sizes and shapes can cluster thickness distributions into artificial modes, thereby distorting frequency distribution, making it difficult to compare and communicate information across spatial scales. This problem has not been dealt with systematically in sea ice until now, largely because it appears to incur no significant change in integrated thickness which often serves as a volume proxy. Concomitantly, demands are increasing for thickness distribution as a resource for modeling, monitoring and forecasting air–sea fluxes and growing human …

Patent Demands And Initial Public Offerings, Robin Feldman, Evan Frondorf Jan 2015

Patent Demands And Initial Public Offerings, Robin Feldman, Evan Frondorf

Faculty Scholarship

Quantitative analysis of patent behavior is critical, as congressional and regulatory agencies consider the impact of patent trolling on modern markets. Anecdotal evidence has suggested that “non-practicing entities,” also known as “patent trolls,” specifically target companies for lawsuits, licensing demands, or other monetization activity as firms approach or complete major funding events, such as their initial public offering (IPO). To test this narrative, we survey in-house legal staff at companies that have recently gone public about their exposure to patent demands surrounding their first round of venture capital funding and their IPO. The study is one of the first attempts …

Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies Faculty Publications and Presentations

In the past twenty years, much research has been conducted into the effects of community-based learning and service-learning on students, but studies into the long-term impacts that persist after graduation have been fewer in number. In this article, the authors share perspectives from Portland State University alumni on the lasting significance of their participation in a community-based learning course that has been operating continuously for more than two decades and the key features of significant learning experiences more generally.

Interactional Practices And Artifact Orientation In Mobile Augmented Reality Game Play, Steven L. Thorne, John Hellermann, Adam Jones, Daniel Lester

World Languages and Literatures Faculty Publications and Presentations

In an effort to better understand the ways that small groups use digital technology as they move through a physical environment, this paper describes the methods used by groups of three people to maintain a group participation structure as they accomplish a quest-type task during mobile augmented reality game play. The game was available on one mobile digital device (an Apple iPhone) that was shared by three players as they negotiated a set of point-to-point route finding tasks. Video-recordings of each group were made using three cameras (two head-mounted cameras and one hand-held camera). We focus on the different ways …

Job Seeking Learners: Digital Literacy Acquisition Case Study, Elizabeth Withers, Gloria Jacobs, Drew Pizzolato, Jill Castek, Kimberly D. Pendell, Stephen Reder

Research Briefs and Case Studies

This case study investigates the experience of digital literacy acquisition among adult job seekers, offering an overview of the various lab settings accessed by job-seeking learners, as well as the different ways that tutor-facilitated, self-paced learning was organized. Examination of the learner path as experienced by job seekers reveals the challenge for learners of seeing the relevance of digital literacy acquisition when faced with the urgent need of having to find employment. Also discussed in the case study are the significant impact of the relationships that developed between learners and tutors, the role that tutors play in building relevance for …

Corrections And Reentry: Digital Literacy Acquisition Case Study, Elizabeth Withers, Gloria Jacobs, Jill Castek, Drew Pizzolato, Kimberly D. Pendell, Stephen Reder

Research Briefs and Case Studies

This case study investigates the digital literacy acquisition process for learners within a corrections setting. The digital literacy program was part of the reentry program available to some individuals approaching their release date. The case study describes the lab within a prison, and details of how mentor-facilitated, self-paced learning was organized. Examination of the learner path in a corrections setting highlights how learners perceived the relevance of digital literacy in their lives; how they overcame their fears of computers or technology and their self-confidence grew; and potential changes in their self-identity, which often led to imagining new and different possible …

Parties, Politics And Regulation: Evidence From Clean Air Act Enforcement, Robert Innes, Arnab Mitra Jan 2015

Parties, Politics And Regulation: Evidence From Clean Air Act Enforcement, Robert Innes, Arnab Mitra

Economics Faculty Publications and Presentations

Does local Federal regulation respond to the preferences of local Congressional representatives? For example, do Republican Congressmen reduce local enforcement of Clean Air laws in their districts? We use facility-level panel data on Clean Air Act inspections over 1989–2005 to study the causal effect of a Congressman's party affiliation on local enforcement. Random assignment of electoral outcomes is obtained with a Regression Discontinuity design. We find that new Republican (vs. Democratic) Representatives significantly depress inspection rates for local polluting facilities in the first year after their election. (JEL D73, Q52, Q53)

Wavelet-Coupled Machine Learning Methods For Drought Forecast Utilizing Hybrid Meteorological And Remotely-Sensed Data, R. Tan, Marek Perkowski Jan 2015

Wavelet-Coupled Machine Learning Methods For Drought Forecast Utilizing Hybrid Meteorological And Remotely-Sensed Data, R. Tan, Marek Perkowski

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

In this study, a statistical drought early warning method is proposed using novel machine learning algorithms, with the inclusion of multiple drought-related attributes from precipitation, satellite-derived land cover vegetation indices, and surface discharge. The forecast is made for the long-term hydrological drought in the region of Central Valley, California. The wavelet transform analysis is employed in combination with support vector regression and artificial neural network algorithms for improving the drought prediction effectiveness. The performance of the drought prediction is evaluated using three statistical metrics: Coefficient of Determination (R2 ), Root-Mean-Square Error (RMSE), and Mean-Absolute-Error (MAE). The results clearly indicate that …

Writing About Writing And The Multimajor Professional Writing Course, Sarah Read, Michael J. Michaud Jan 2015

Writing About Writing And The Multimajor Professional Writing Course, Sarah Read, Michael J. Michaud

English Faculty Publications and Presentations

This article connects the pedagogy of the multimajor professional writing (MMPW) course with two important contemporary discussions in composition studies: the pedagogy called writing about writing (WAW) and the conversation about the transferability of rhetorical knowledge from school to work. The authors argued that the capaciousness of the WAW approach accommodates the best of genre-based and client-based pedagogies for the MMPW course and provides a framework for expanding the course beyond skill-based outcomes to include preparing students to be learning transformers. The article includes two iterations of what a writing about writing -- professional writing course can look like.

Why Are We Watching Funny Videos In Our Pedagogy Course? Deconstructing Humorous Videos To Foster Social Activism In Educators, Anita Bright Jan 2015

Why Are We Watching Funny Videos In Our Pedagogy Course? Deconstructing Humorous Videos To Foster Social Activism In Educators, Anita Bright

Education Faculty Publications and Presentations

For critical educators working towards social justice and activism, it is imperative to promote a thoughtful and purposeful examination of the privileges that spring from institutionalised practices, and the ways belief systems may deny the normalcy of views or experiences of others. By employing critical discourse analysis and framing funny videos as part of larger, cultural “mirror” that reflects widely-held values and beliefs within local, institutional and societal domains, this paper identifies specific humorous videos and lines of inquiry that have supported educators in recognising their own complicity in promoting a narrow definition of normativity, along varying and intersecting planes, …

Public Perception Of Male Athletes Vs. Female Athletes In The Media, Kaleigh Elizabeth Dickson Jan 2015

Public Perception Of Male Athletes Vs. Female Athletes In The Media, Kaleigh Elizabeth Dickson

LSU Master's Theses

In this experiment, my goal was to determine if public perception of female athletes differed from public perception of male athletes. Female athletes are underrepresented in the media (Eastman and Billings, 2000), and because of this, public perception of male athletes might differ from their perceptions of female athletes in the media. I hypothesized that my respondents would best remember the female athletes appearance, best remember the male athletes interview content and that the female and male respondents who took my experiment would evaluate each athlete differently based on their own gender and the athletes’ gender. My results indicated that …

Somaesthetics And Dance, Curtis L. Carter Jan 2015

Somaesthetics And Dance, Curtis L. Carter

Philosophy Faculty Research and Publications

Dance is proposed as the most representative of somaesthetic arts in Thinking Through the Body: Essays in Somaesthetics and other writings of Richard Shusterman. Shuster- man offers a useful, but incomplete approach to somaesthetics of dance. In the examples provided, dance appears as subordinate to another art form (theater or photography) or as a means to achieving bodily excellence. Missing, for example, are accounts of the role of dance as an independent art form, how somaesthetics would address differences in varying approaches to dance, and attention to the viewer’s somaesthetic dance experience. Three strategies for developing new directions for dance …
