Identifying Standards Of Quality In Christian Online Theological Education, Ryan Baltrip

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Changes in computer and communication technology have sparked an educational revolution. For over 20 years, higher education, as a whole, has been adapting to the changing educational landscape. Christian theological education, which is not immune to changing educational realities, has also been adapting to decentralized educational tendencies and experiencing rapid growth in distance and online learning. Christian theological education appears to be a decade or so behind higher education in its contemporary adaptation to online learning,. Questions that higher education began asking over a decade ago about online learning are now part of the contemporary conversation within Christian online theological …

A More Perfect European Union?: The Transnational Networks Of The European Union’S Embassy Open House In Washington, D.C., Timothy Barney Nov 2015

A More Perfect European Union?: The Transnational Networks Of The European Union’S Embassy Open House In Washington, D.C., Timothy Barney

Rhetoric and Communication Studies Faculty Publications

Annually, the Delegation of the European Union (EU) in Washington, D.C., holds an embassy open house day for its 27 member nations to celebrate European culture and educate tourists on the functions of EU politics and international relations. Amidst an ongoing debt crisis and a continuing exploration of its identity as a supranational entity, “Embassy Day” affords an opportunity to see the EU as a spatial network uneasily caught in the tensions between the often nostalgic nationalism of its constituent countries and the future-oriented technocratic transnationalism of its composite alliance. By analyzing the cultural artifacts of Embassy Day from its …

Quantifying The Information Habits Of High School Students Engaged In Engineering Design, Nathan Mentzer, Michael J. Fosmire Nov 2015

Quantifying The Information Habits Of High School Students Engaged In Engineering Design, Nathan Mentzer, Michael J. Fosmire

Journal of Pre-College Engineering Education Research (J-PEER)

stract This study measured the information gathering behaviors of high school students who had taken engineering design courses as they solved a design problem. The authors investigated what types of information students accessed, its quality, when it was accessed during the students’ process, and if it impacted their thinking during the activity. Students overwhelmingly relied on internet searching to acquire information, rather than printed materials available to them. The sites they found were generally popular rather than technical, and persuasive (i.e., trying to sell something) rather than informative. The high school students understood the need for information, as they sought …

Marbles: The Application Of Input-Output Concepts To Safety Management Systems, Tim Brady, Alan Stolzer, Anthony Brickhouse, Antonio Cortés, Dan Mccune, Jayathi Raghavan, David Freiwald

Journal of Aviation Technology and Engineering

The goal of this research was to apply the economic concept titled Input-Output Analysis to an aviation safety concept titled Safety Management Systems (SMS). Input-Output (IO) is based upon the interrelationships of various components of an economic system and what happens to the system when one or more of those components changes. Since SMS is, by definition, a system with definable components, the research sought to determine if the interrelationships between those components could be determined and quantified. The term ‘‘marbles’’ was used to describe the activities that led to the IO-SMS matrix. Marbles was used as a metaphor for …

Cultural Mapping As A Social Practice: A Response To "Mapping The Cultural Boundaries In Schools And Communities: Redefining Spaces Through Organizing", Jennifer A. Vadeboncoeur, Shenaz A. Hanif-Shahban

Democracy & Education

Inspired by Gerald Wood and Elizabeth Lemley’s (2015) article entitled Mapping the Cultural Boundaries in Schools and Communities: Redefining Spaces Through Organizing, this response inquires further into cultural mapping as a social practice. From our perspective, cultural mapping has potential to contribute to place making, as well as the values to sustain more equitable social futures. Thus, alongside the maps created, we longed to learn more about how the participants were engaged in mapping, how perceptions of mapping changed over time and context, how participation was mediated by relationships, and how transformation in the participants, child, youth, and adults …

Transaction Circles With Digital Texts As A Foundation For Democratic Practices, Sally Brown

Democracy & Education

Transaction circles weave together elements of guided reading and literature circles in an open conversational structure that supports students as agentive learners. Discourse within these circles utilizing digital informational texts assist in the development of democratic practices even in a time when federal mandates limit curricula and prescribe programs. The findings of this study reveal the importance of aesthetic learning experiences in knowledge construction and the ways in which thinking through complex issues with others benefits social action.

Engineered Gag-Based Coatings For Mesenchymal Stem Cells, Johna Temenoff Nov 2015

Engineered Gag-Based Coatings For Mesenchymal Stem Cells, Johna Temenoff

Composites at Lake Louise (CALL 2015)

The therapeutic potency of delivered mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) in tissue engineering applications may be improved by priming cells toward a differentiated state prior to implantation. Mimicking native extracellular matrix (ECM) interactions, the electrostatic attraction between negatively-charged glycosaminoglycans (GAGs such as heparin and chondroitin sulfate) and positively-charged proteins may act to locally sequester factors present in the culture media (or secreted by nearby cells) to further enhance stem cell response to soluble factors prior to cell transplantation for musculoskeletal disorders.

In these experiments, we desulfated the GAG heparin and heparin (Hep) and desulfated (Hep-) heparin were biotinylated via HOBT/EDC chemistry. …

Polymer Melts Inside Nanoscale Cylindrical Pores: Chain Conformations, Polymer Diffusion And Local Dynamics, Karen Winey Nov 2015

Polymer Melts Inside Nanoscale Cylindrical Pores: Chain Conformations, Polymer Diffusion And Local Dynamics, Karen Winey

Composites at Lake Louise (CALL 2015)

Polymers in composites and inside porous media are frequently confined to spaces that are comparable to or even smaller than their mean end-to-end distances in the unconfined bulk state. Understanding the impact of nanoscale confinement on both polymer structure and dynamics is critical for a variety of applications including hydraulic fracturing fluids, porous inorganic thin films in the electronics industry, and composites. To date, our work focuses on polymer melts under nanoscale cylindrical confinement. The polymer center-of-mass diffusion into cylindrical pores in anodized aluminum oxide membranes (diameters 18 – 80 nm) was measured using elastic recoil detection. This ion beam …

Engineering Hydrogels For Dynamic Modulation Of Stem Cell Activity, Kristopher Kilian Nov 2015

Engineering Hydrogels For Dynamic Modulation Of Stem Cell Activity, Kristopher Kilian

Composites at Lake Louise (CALL 2015)

Patient derived mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) are a promising cell-based autologous therapy for numerous diseases due to the propensity to differentiate to numerous lineages without risk of rejection. Another interesting aspect of the therapeutic potential of these cells is their proven ability to secrete molecules that are immunomodulatory and pro-angiogenic, e.g. living cytokine factories, which may be implanted at a site of injury to promote healing. However, clinical efficacy has proven to be variable, which we postulate is due in part to insufficient control over the injectable biomaterials employed. In our laboratory we have noted a gradual loss of the …

Transport Of Nanoparticles In Polyelectrolyte Solutions As A Model Of Polymer Nanocomposite Processing, Jacinta Conrad, Ryan Poling, Firoozeh Babaye, Ramanan Krishnamoorti Nov 2015

Transport Of Nanoparticles In Polyelectrolyte Solutions As A Model Of Polymer Nanocomposite Processing, Jacinta Conrad, Ryan Poling, Firoozeh Babaye, Ramanan Krishnamoorti

Composites at Lake Louise (CALL 2015)

The transport properties of nanoparticles in complex confined media play a significant role in the processing of advanced polymer nanocomposites. In polymer nanocomposite processing, nanoparticles suspended in polymer resins must be efficiently dispersed to obtain optimal mechanical, electrical, thermal, and/or optical properties and eliminate stress concentrators. Here, we investigate the diffusion and dispersion of nanoparticles in solutions of unentangled polyelectrolytes as a model system in which to understand the coupling between particle and polymer dynamics in flow conditions representative of those encountered during nanocomposite processing.

First, we measure the long-time quiescent diffusivity of fluorescent polystyrene nanoparticles in dilute and semidilute …

The Development Of Bioresorbable Fe-Mn Alloys For Orthopedic Implantation, Lia Stanciu Nov 2015

The Development Of Bioresorbable Fe-Mn Alloys For Orthopedic Implantation, Lia Stanciu

Composites at Lake Louise (CALL 2015)

Bioresorbable metals have immense potential to be used in the clinical treatment of a variety of soft and hard tissue injuries and disease. For many applications, the presence of a permanent device may cause severe negative effects and require re-intervention in the long-term. A transient support for a healing tissue is an attractive solution for orthopaedic and vascular interventions alike. For applications in bone fracture in particular, the human body requires fixation devices to support bone regrowth in the proper alignment, but only for a short period of time (typically 6-12 months). We aim to design bioresorbable materials to fill …
