Philippine Kinship And Social Organization From The Perspective Of Historical Linguistics, Maria Kristina Gallego Nov 2015

Philippine Kinship And Social Organization From The Perspective Of Historical Linguistics, Maria Kristina Gallego

Philippine Studies: Historical and Ethnographic Viewpoints

Based on a reconstruction of Proto-Philippine kinship and social organization terminologies, thisarticle characterizes early Philippine kinship as bilateral with possible quasi-lineages. These features support the reconstruction of the Proto–Malayo-Polynesian system made by George Peter Murdock (1949) rather than that of Robert Blust (1980). In terms of leadership, the early Philippine community is described as dualistic in nature, allowing achieved and ascribed or hereditary chiefdom—thus deviating from the ancestral concept of hereditary leadership in the Proto–Malayo-Polynesian system. Changes in the Philippine kinship system are traced to show innovations in nomenclature and behavior toward certain kin. Keywords: historical linguistics • cultural reconstruction • …

Culture And Government In A Land Of Conflict: An Analysis Of Northern Ireland, Emily Starbuck Nov 2015

Culture And Government In A Land Of Conflict: An Analysis Of Northern Ireland, Emily Starbuck

University Honors Program

The following thesis is an analysis of the rich and complex history of the state of Northern Ireland and its subsequent effects on government policy, cultural identification, and public opinion concerning the use of violence. I examined the historical precedents set into place which could explain the continued violence, political party orientation, and cultural evolution which is, even now, taking place as a result of the involvement of two very different populations. I provided evidence concerning current public opinion regarding the sectarian and paramilitary violence which plagued the state for hundreds of years and continues to occur, although much less …

The Effects Of Music On Education And Early Literacy: An Insight On Defining Literacy And The Use Of Music In The Classroom, Lindsey Hawkins

University Honors Program

The purpose of this essay is to examine the effects that music has on education and literacy, and to provide insight on how to go about using music in a classroom. First, the essay will define the word ‘literacy,’ and prove why this is important, and then describe how literacy is taught in a classroom using phonics. Then, it will take a look at how music affects the student brain, and how those effects are linked directly to the way students process reading, writing, and communication. Finally, this essay will look at the direct effects that music has on education …

American Culture’S Impact On Gender And The Perpetuation Of A Gender Binary, Anna Blaho Nov 2015

American Culture’S Impact On Gender And The Perpetuation Of A Gender Binary, Anna Blaho

University Honors Program

This thesis explores the origins of American culture’s fixation on gender being a dichotomous concept. Through the analysis of previous research surrounding the subject of gender roles, expectations, and stereotypes, contributors to this restrictive mind frame as well as reinforcing agents were recognized. Historical trends have demonstrated the assignment of clear and separate tasks to the genders, which in turn created differentiated experiences and opportunities presented to each gender. Facilitated by the historical basis, American culture emulated similar patterns that instilled inflexible conceptions about gender to the point where it has created a discriminate workplace environment. As a consequence of …

Actin Filaments Target The Oligomeric Maturation Of The Dynamin Gtpase Drp1 To Mitochondrial Fission Sites, Wei-Ke Ji, Anna L. Hatch, Ronald A. Merrill, Stefan Strack, Henry N. Higgs Nov 2015

Actin Filaments Target The Oligomeric Maturation Of The Dynamin Gtpase Drp1 To Mitochondrial Fission Sites, Wei-Ke Ji, Anna L. Hatch, Ronald A. Merrill, Stefan Strack, Henry N. Higgs

Dartmouth Scholarship

While the dynamin GTPase Drp1 plays a critical role during mitochondrial fission, mechanisms controlling its recruitment to fission sites are unclear. A current assumption is that cytosolic Drp1 is recruited directly to fission sites immediately prior to fission. Using live-cell microscopy, we find evidence for a different model, progressive maturation of Drp1 oligomers on mitochondria through incorporation of smaller mitochondrially-bound Drp1 units. Maturation of a stable Drp1 oligomer does not forcibly lead to fission. Drp1 oligomers also translocate directionally along mitochondria. Ionomycin, a calcium ionophore, causes rapid mitochondrial accumulation of actin filaments followed by Drp1 accumulation at the fission site, …

God, Gays, And Voodoo: Voicing Blame After Katrina, Jefferson Walker Nov 2015

God, Gays, And Voodoo: Voicing Blame After Katrina, Jefferson Walker

Communication and Theater Association of Minnesota Journal

Much of the public discourse following Hurricane Katrina’s devastating impact on Louisiana and much of the Gulf Coast in 2005 focused on placing blame. This paper focuses on those critics who stated that Hurricane Katrina was “God’s punishment” for people’s sins. Through a narrative analysis of texts surrounding Hurricane Katrina, I explicate the ways in which individuals argued about God’s judgment and punishment. I specifically turn my attention to three texts: First, a Repent America press release entitled “Hurricane Katrina Destroys New Orleans Days Before ‘Southern Decadence,’” second, a newsletter released by Rick Scarborough of Vision America, and third, Democratic …

Illuminativa: The Resonance Of The Unseen, Derek Ventling Nov 2015

Illuminativa: The Resonance Of The Unseen, Derek Ventling

Experiential Knowledge (EKSIG) Conference Series

This paper outlines some key considerations of my current creative arts doctoral thesis. The practice-led research investigates the metaphysical notion of light as an activating principle and how this is subjectively experienced. It re-contextualizes the illuminative process within creative arts, synthesizing its sensate implications with contemporary expression. Philosophically, the research is founded upon the medieval concept that illumination is a key transformational element of our cognitive journey – a process that begins with a sensory experience and leads through philosophical thought to wisdom. Making and perceiving are both the essence and the framework of the research experiments. Light is explored …

Making Sense Of Dress: On Sensory Perspectives Of Wardrobe Research, Else Skjold Nov 2015

Making Sense Of Dress: On Sensory Perspectives Of Wardrobe Research, Else Skjold

Experiential Knowledge (EKSIG) Conference Series

In this paper, I wish to exemplify how research on bodily experiences of dressing within research on fashion and dress research might be combined with user-oriented approaches from design research. By doing so, I wish to point my finger at the unfortunate wall between these two scholarly areas which to my mind has created a limited understanding of the connection between dress design, the body, and people's day-to-day routines of getting dressed. The case through which I wish to debate this is a wardrobe study of men in the age of 40-50 years old that I conducted in the period …

Crafting Material Innovation, Danielle Wilde, Jenny Underwood, Rebecca Pohlner Nov 2015

Crafting Material Innovation, Danielle Wilde, Jenny Underwood, Rebecca Pohlner

Experiential Knowledge (EKSIG) Conference Series

When designing material interactions using digital and other technologies, ideation and development timelines can go out of sync. In this paper we discuss how a crafts-driven approach to wearable technologies can sensitise researchers to novel ways of moving forward when faced with such a challenge. We identify ‘no-tech’ prototyping as a powerful paradigm for ideating wearable technologies when the technologies are not yet specified or available; and we describe four craft-based conceptual lenses – an approach, expression, dialogue and language – that support the development of no-tech prototypes at a range of resolutions. The Poetic Kinaesthetic Interface project (PKI) serves …

Materials In Footwear: An Empirical Study Of Hands-On Textile Approaches To Sandal Design, Jenny Gordon, Faith Kane, Mark Evans Nov 2015

Materials In Footwear: An Empirical Study Of Hands-On Textile Approaches To Sandal Design, Jenny Gordon, Faith Kane, Mark Evans

Experiential Knowledge (EKSIG) Conference Series

Commercial sandals are often designed in a 2D format and materials are generally applied during design development rather than the earlier stages of the process. In contrast, hands- on woven textile design is often carried out through making and interaction with materials. This paper presents the findings of an action research case study that investigated the use of ‘hands-on’ woven textile approaches to sandal design at different stages of the design process. The role that hands-on interaction with materials plays at each stage is analysed to assess areas of potential for its integration. The case study presented in this paper …

Epistemic Mutations: Material Object Engagement In Exhibition Making, Ane Pilegaard Nov 2015

Epistemic Mutations: Material Object Engagement In Exhibition Making, Ane Pilegaard

Experiential Knowledge (EKSIG) Conference Series

The paper investigates how experimental design practices in pre-exhibition object handling can unfold the materially embedded knowledge production of museum objects. Even though material objects are recognized as key elements in museum practice, concerns for their specific material qualities, such as texture, color, weight, etc., seldom function as primary drivers during the curating and design phases in exhibition making. This is partly due to preservation issues – the fact that direct object handling must be limited – but is also a result of dominating textual practices. This paper argues that, if the materially embedded knowledge of museum objects is to …

Kindness As A Collective Wish To Co-Design With Communities Using Physical Installation, Priscilla Chueng-Nainby, Xu Lin, Jun Hu Nov 2015

Kindness As A Collective Wish To Co-Design With Communities Using Physical Installation, Priscilla Chueng-Nainby, Xu Lin, Jun Hu

Experiential Knowledge (EKSIG) Conference Series

This paper reports a co-design intervention experimented with ‘kindness’ as a community value for social innovation during Dutch Design Week 2014. We discuss the insights gathered from the practice-based research aimed to envision and enact community’s creative imagery as a shared space for co-creation. The co-design intervention visualized, enacted, connected and structured community’s ideas by projecting “kindness” as an idealistic social value to inspire the community’s collective wishes. The activity was instrumented by Collective Imagery framework supported by two co-design tools: Collective Imagery Weave as a physical installation using tags and threads to envision creative complexity; and Mind Weave Theatre …

Digital Crafting In The Field Of Ceramics, Flemming Tvede Hansen, Henrik Leander Evers, Martin Tamke Nov 2015

Digital Crafting In The Field Of Ceramics, Flemming Tvede Hansen, Henrik Leander Evers, Martin Tamke

Experiential Knowledge (EKSIG) Conference Series

This article aims to discuss and explore how craft knowledge in the field of ceramics can be utilized through digital technologies. Based on a set of experiments, which led to the development of a computational system that negotiates between the movement of the designer’s hands and the 3d clay printing, we propose to leave thinking in diametric positions about technology and craft. Instead, we recommend to see technology as an enabling force and follow McCullough’s (1998) idea about a close connection between digital work and craft practice. We base this on similarities we find between the way custom digital design …

Materia Prima: The Rough Guide, Megan Walch Nov 2015

Materia Prima: The Rough Guide, Megan Walch

Experiential Knowledge (EKSIG) Conference Series

This paper describes a suite of ten paintings titled The Rough Guide and discusses them as an alternative form of cartography that maps subjectivity in flux. It is an autoethnographic account of the material performativity of paint and the interplay between base materiality, chemical interactions and my improvised embodied action. This echoes the ancient alchemical practice where transformation of substance became transformation of self: in alchemy the perfection of Man was aimed at unity with Divine nature. The Rough Guide suite forms the central component of a studio based PhD investigation titled Viscosity, Fluidity, Plasticity: Reworking Pictorial Conventions in Paint, …

The purpose of this paper is to explore small-scale service prototyping as a tool and a process for developing and implementing service concepts and initiating transformation in the involved public service organization(s) simultaneously. The paper describes a municipality initiated service design case and reflects on the prototyping process and findings. The paper focuses on the use of service prototyping in developing ‘social emergency’ services for families with children. The case illustrates how service prototyping and tangible prototype may establish a connection between front-stage and back-stage transformation both at operational and strategic levels. The findings explicate how the collaborative service prototyping …

A Superpower Apologizes? President Clinton’S Address In Rwanda, Jason A. Edwards, Thomasena Shaw Nov 2015

A Superpower Apologizes? President Clinton’S Address In Rwanda, Jason A. Edwards, Thomasena Shaw

Communication and Theater Association of Minnesota Journal

The failure to intervene in Rwanda was one of the greatest foreign policy mishaps of Bill Clinton’s presidency. In March 1998, Clinton made an extended tour of the African subcontinent with a stop in Rwanda. During his brief visit, the president attempted to repair the image of the United States among Rwandans and the broader international community. Clinton used three primary image repair strategies: democratization of blame, corrective action, and transcend-ence. Despite his emphasis on the important lessons that the world could learn from the Rwan-dan genocide, we argue that his rhetorical choices ultimately undermined his larger mission and led …

Understanding Coalition Dynamics: A Role Play Class Activity, Anthony M. Ocaña

Communication and Theater Association of Minnesota Journal

The purpose of this activity is to illustrate the role and challenges of coalitions in group conflict and decision making. In this activity, students take on the roles of organizational members tasked to arrive at consensus, but having different goals, interests, and information that could impact the decision. In discussing this activity experience, instructors can illustrate the six principles of coalitions presented in Wilmot and Hocker’s Interpersonal Conflict text. This activity is applicable to any course that addresses conflict and group interaction, including interpersonal and group communication, organizational and professional communication, family communication, and workplace skills seminars.
