Efficient Implementations Of Pairing-Based Cryptography On Embedded Systems, Rajeev Verma Dec 2015

Efficient Implementations Of Pairing-Based Cryptography On Embedded Systems, Rajeev Verma

Theses

Many cryptographic applications use bilinear pairing such as identity based signature, instance identity-based key agreement, searchable public-key encryption, short signature scheme, certificate less encryption and blind signature. Elliptic curves over finite field are the most secure and efficient way to implement bilinear pairings for the these applications. Pairing based cryptosystems are being implemented on different platforms such as low-power and mobile devices. Recently, hardware capabilities of embedded devices have been emerging which can support efficient and faster implementations of pairings on hand-held devices. In this thesis, the main focus is optimization of Optimal Ate-pairing using special class of ordinary curves, …

Examining Moral Necessity In The Kantian Categorical Imperative, Mark E. Harris Dec 2015

Examining Moral Necessity In The Kantian Categorical Imperative, Mark E. Harris

The Catalyst

Moral necessity is the idea that specific imperatives bind the actions of a moral agent regardless of his or her personal goals or wishes. Contemporary ethicists have debated whether the moral system of Immanuel Kant includes rules which do in fact bind necessarily on the moral agent. This paper will argue that Kant's categorical imperative does not bind necessarily. The three different formulas given for the categorical imperative can each be used to derive different moral rules. If varying and conflicting rules can be constructed depending on which formula is used, then it is impossible to know which rule, if …

High-Flying Success For Chemistry Students: Nasa's Reduced Gravity Student Flight Opportunities Program, Kristi Budzinski, Nicholas Carter, Kayce Leard, Christina Watters, Brian Zoltowski

The Catalyst

NASA's Reduced Gravity Student Flight Opportunities Program (RGSFOP) conducted at Johnson Space Center and Ellington Field in Houston, Texas, provides science and engineering undergraduates the opportunity to design and conduct experiments in a microgravity environment. The student program began roughly five years ago, although NASA developed a reduced gravity program in 1959. In the past five years, more than 1 00 different schools from around the country have participated. The KC-135 jet, which is similar to the Boeing 707, is used to produce a microgravity environment for training astronauts and testing equipment to use in space.

To create the rnicrogravity …

The Search For Consistent Achievement: Scheduling Methods And Their Effects On The At-Risk Rural High School, Marsha Thibodeaux Dec 2015

The Search For Consistent Achievement: Scheduling Methods And Their Effects On The At-Risk Rural High School, Marsha Thibodeaux

The Catalyst

At Varnado High School in Washington Parish, Louisiana, the 4x4 block has been in place for three years. In order to compare the two schedules, I obtained the Louisiana Department of Education's District Composite Report for Washington Parish. This report contains data concerning dropout rates and ACT scores from two traditionally scheduled school years (1995-1997), the year of 4x4-block implementation (1997-1998), and two years of the block (1998-2000).

More districts are relying on standardized test scores in order to determine a school's success; therefore, I also analyzed pass ing rates from the state-mandated Graduate Exit Examination (GEE) for the same …

Volumetric Properties Of Electrolytes In Natural Waters, Carmen Rodriguez Dec 2015

Volumetric Properties Of Electrolytes In Natural Waters, Carmen Rodriguez

Open Access Dissertations

The research of this dissertation has focused on the volumetric properties of electrolyte solutions, including seawater, across wide ranges of temperature and concentration. The volume and compressibility are inherently useful as physical chemical properties of electrolyte solutions. They are directly related to the density and sound speed of a solution; thus, they are important for studying physical processes and properties in the ocean, including mixing, sound transmission, and water mass stability. Possibly of greater significance, however, is the volume’s role as a thermodynamic variable that guides chemical systems into equilibrium. By analyzing the volume properties of electrolyte solutions over wide …

Physics & Astronomy Faculty Works

A crucial aspect of understanding planet formation is determining the binarity of the host stars. Results from radial velocity (RV) surveys and the follow-up of Kepler exoplanet candidates have demonstrated that stellar binarity certainly does not exclude the presence of planets in stable orbits and the configuration may in fact be relatively common. Here we present new results for the 30 Arietis system which confirms that the B component hosts both planetary and stellar companions. Keck AO imaging provides direct detection of the stellar companion and additional RV data are consistent with an orbiting star. We present a revised orbit …

Standardised Testing In Compulsory Schooling In England And Denmark: A Comparative Study And Analysis, K Andreasen, P Kelly, K Kousholt, E Mcness, C Ydesen Dec 2015

Standardised Testing In Compulsory Schooling In England And Denmark: A Comparative Study And Analysis, K Andreasen, P Kelly, K Kousholt, E Mcness, C Ydesen

Plymouth Institute of Education

Within education, national testing is flourishing and, considering the important role which assessment plays in the production and reproduction of culture, it is important to examine further the possible impact of such practice. While England has a long tradition of national educational testing, Denmark, in contrast, has only recently introduced such tests. Thus the two countries present excellent cases for comparison and analysis in order to gain knowledge about the possible consequences of such testing schemes on pedagogy and the content of the school curriculum, as well as the impact they may have on pupils' perceptions of their potential academic …

The Schwarzschild Solution And Timelike Geodesics, Matthew B. Ross Dec 2015

The Schwarzschild Solution And Timelike Geodesics, Matthew B. Ross

Physics Capstone Projects

General Relativity is a major area of study in physics. It allows us to calculate the motion and interaction of particles in a non-Euclidean space-time. This presentation will examine the process of finding the Schwarzschild metric tensor field by finding a solution of the Einstein Equation for a non-rotating spherical mass. A general form of the Schwarzschild metric tenor field will be used to calculate the Riemann curvature tensor and subsequently the Ricci tensor and Ricci scalar which will be used to find a vacuum solution to the Einstein Equation. Once the solutions of the Einstein Equation are found, they …

Wetland Inundation Mapping And Wetland Restoration Planning: A Case Study Of Playa Wetlands, Nebraska, Yue Gu Dec 2015

Wetland Inundation Mapping And Wetland Restoration Planning: A Case Study Of Playa Wetlands, Nebraska, Yue Gu

Community and Regional Planning Program: Theses

There has been a variety of wetland monitoring projects implemented in playa wetlands in Nebraska over the last decades. But there is still a lack of continuous wetland monitoring on long-term and large-area dimension. Because inundation condition is one of the critical parameters to describe wetland hydrologic performance, this study aims to assess the inundation alteration in playa wetlands in Nebraska and evaluate the performance of wetland conservation and restoration practices. This study uses the Landsat data to create playa wetland inundation condition maps and analyze the variation trend of inundated playa wetlands over the past 30 years. The results …

Marginal Empirical Likelihood Independence Screening In Sparse Ultrahigh Dimensional Additive Models, Junying Zhang Dec 2015

Marginal Empirical Likelihood Independence Screening In Sparse Ultrahigh Dimensional Additive Models, Junying Zhang

Probability & Statistics Seminar

Additive models have been proven to be very useful as they increase the flexibility of the standard linear model and allow a data-analytic transform of the covariates to enter into the linear model. In a high-dimensional setting where the dimensionality grows exponentially with the sample size, the urgent issue is to reduce dimensionality from high to a moderate scale. In this paper, we investigate the marginal empirical likelihood screening methods for ultrahigh dimensional additive models. The proposed nonparametric screening method selects variables by ranking a measure of the marginal empirical likelihood ratio evaluated at zero in order to differentiate the …

Uplift Of Shoreline Regions On Pagai Island Due To The September 12, 2007 Mw 8.4 Earthquake Captured By Sar Image, Ashar Muda Lubis

Makara Journal of Technology

At least 25 people were killed by the September 12, 2007 Mw 8.4 Bengkulu earthquake, and many buildings were destroyed in Bengkulu and West Sumatra provinces. It is very important to estimate the earth surface deformation due to the earthquake to understand the rupture size and its process. The aim of this research is to estimate the shoreline change and vertical displacement on Pagai Island associated with the September 12, 2007 Mw 8.4 Bengkulu earthquake. The intensity of ALOS-PALSAR satellite images is used to access the pattern of displacement. The result shows that Pagai Island demonstrated huge uplift due to …

Electronic Structure Calculations Of Monolayer–Protected Gold Nanoclusters To Aid Spectroscopic Analysis, Neranjan V. Perera Dec 2015

Electronic Structure Calculations Of Monolayer–Protected Gold Nanoclusters To Aid Spectroscopic Analysis, Neranjan V. Perera

Doctoral Dissertations

The underlying goal of this thesis dissertation is to simulate small monolayer protected clusters (MPCs) via quantum mechanics and molecular mechanics calculations to derive electronic, structural, and dynamical properties. First we specifically focus on monolayers consisting of thiolated oligopeptides and alkanethiols. We construct MPCs with a layer of oligopeptides consisting of α-aminoisobutyric acid units. We use Monte Carlo simulations to determine peptide arrangements and folding. We then perform NMR chemical shifts calculations and compare to experimental measurements to validate the predicted structure.

An Analysis Of Variance In Teacher Self-Efficacy Levels Dependent On Participation Time In Professional Learning Communities, Megan D. Marx Dec 2015

An Analysis Of Variance In Teacher Self-Efficacy Levels Dependent On Participation Time In Professional Learning Communities, Megan D. Marx

Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)

The purpose of this study was to determine variance in mean levels of teacher self-efficacy (TSE) and its three factors – efficacy in student engagement (EIS), efficacy in instructional strategies (EIS), and efficacy in classroom management (ECM) – based on participation and time spent in professional learning communities (PLCs). In this cross-sectional study, 123 teachers from two similarly profiled high schools in one, New Jersey urban public school district were surveyed using the Teacher Sense of Efficacy Scale (Tschannen-Moran and Hoy, 2001). An independent sample t test was used to measure variance in mean levels of TSE, ESE, EIS, and …

Curvature: A Geometric Villain That Ruins Our Instinctive Perception Of Nature, Vehbi Emrah Paksoy Dec 2015

Curvature: A Geometric Villain That Ruins Our Instinctive Perception Of Nature, Vehbi Emrah Paksoy

Mathematics Colloquium Series

Our perception of nature is based on evolutionary wiring of our brain and observations we make via our senses. But, in reality, many scientific and technological advancements are based on non-intuitive rules and principles that can only be explained by the ultimate abstraction that is embedded in mathematics. In this talk, I will discuss the concept of curvature and argue how it explains the “unexplainable”. We will see how the curvature proves that the earth is rotating, how good the soap bubbles are at proving profound mathematical results, and if the two dimensional residents can determine the shape of their …
