Modeling Micro-Topographic Controls On Boreal Peatland Hydrology And Methane Fluxes, F. Cresto Aleina, Benjamin R. K. Runkle, T. Kleinen, Lars Kutzbach, J. Schneider, V. Brovkin Oct 2015

Modeling Micro-Topographic Controls On Boreal Peatland Hydrology And Methane Fluxes, F. Cresto Aleina, Benjamin R. K. Runkle, T. Kleinen, Lars Kutzbach, J. Schneider, V. Brovkin

Biological and Agricultural Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

Small-scale surface heterogeneities can influence land-atmosphere fluxes and therefore carbon, water and energy budgets on a larger scale. This effect is of particular relevance for high-latitude ecosystems, because of the great amount of carbon stored in their soils. We introduce a novel micro-topographic model, the Hummock-Hollow (HH) model, which explicitly represents small-scale surface elevation changes. By computing the water table at the small scale, and by coupling the model with a process-based model for soil methane processes, we are able to model the effects of micro-topography on hydrology and methane emissions in a typical boreal peatland. In order to assess …

The Impact Of High-Order Risk Attitudes On Bank's Loan Policy, Yuchen Luo Oct 2015

The Impact Of High-Order Risk Attitudes On Bank's Loan Policy, Yuchen Luo

Lingnan Theses

It is well known that prudence plays an important role in the process of decision making under uncertainties. However, how prudence affects a bank's decision on extending fixed rate or variable rate loan has not yet been fully examined. In this dissertation, I use definition of second-order expectation dependence to further identify conditions for the risk prudent (imprudent) bank under state-dependent framework to refrain from extending fixed rate loans. Furthermore, using a set of actual data, I apply a recent developed inference procedure for testing positive expectation dependence to demonstrate the significance of my work in empirical applications. In the …

The 2011 Great Flood In Thailand: Climate Diagnostics And Implications From Climate Change, Parichart Promchote, S. -Y. Simon Wang, Paul G. Johnson

Plants, Soils, and Climate Faculty Publications

Severe flooding occurred in Thailand during the 2011 summer season, which resulted in more than 800 deaths and affected 13.6 million people. The unprecedented nature of this flood in the Chao Phraya River basin (CPRB) was examined and compared with historical flood years. Climate diagnostics were conducted to understand the meteorological conditions and climate forcing that led to the magnitude and duration of this flood. Neither the monsoon rainfall nor the tropical cyclone frequency anomalies alone was sufficient to cause the 2011 flooding event. Instead, a series of abnormal conditions collectively contributed to the intensity of the 2011 flood: anomalously …

An Analysis Of Student Achievement And Measures Of Growth Under No Child Left Behind, Alexis G. Yusim Oct 2015

An Analysis Of Student Achievement And Measures Of Growth Under No Child Left Behind, Alexis G. Yusim

Undergraduate Economic Review

With the passing of the No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB) has come a wave of economic analyses of education production functions attempting to explain what community and school characteristics affect achievement gaps and yearly growth in pass rates. Using standardized test data from the Illinois State Board of Education over the period of NCLB, I argue that there are ways to empirically re-define growth and student success that more effectively capture NCLB’s goals. The results in this paper show inherent differences between the three growth definitions employed and the educational experiences in the grades analyzed.

Learning From Lionfish: Modeling Marine Invaded Systems, Matthew Johnston Oct 2015

Learning From Lionfish: Modeling Marine Invaded Systems, Matthew Johnston

Mathematics Colloquium Series

Simulating marine invaded systems requires broad consideration of physical oceanographic processes, such as ocean circulation patterns and temperature, and biological traits of the invader, such as their reproductive strategy and tolerances to their environment. Through this understanding of baseline biological and oceanographic function, models can be developed in order to forecast the incursion patterns of marine invasive species - helpful both to predict their spread as well as forewarn of impacts. To facilitate this understanding, computer simulation is useful in order to quickly and efficiently assimilate large biological and oceanographic datasets into digestible products. Data derived from such simulations are …

Cave Monitoring And The Potential For Palaeoclimate Reconstruction From Cueva De Asiul, Cantabria (N. Spain), Andrew C. Smith, Peter M. Wynn, Philip A. Barker, Melanie J. Leng, Steve R. Noble, Andrew Stott Oct 2015

Cave Monitoring And The Potential For Palaeoclimate Reconstruction From Cueva De Asiul, Cantabria (N. Spain), Andrew C. Smith, Peter M. Wynn, Philip A. Barker, Melanie J. Leng, Steve R. Noble, Andrew Stott

International Journal of Speleology

Palaeoclimate records from northern Iberia are becoming increasingly sought after as this region is one of the most southerly terrestrial locations in Europe to have its climate dictated principally by the North Atlantic. Terrestrial records therefore have the potential to offer insights into changing oceanic and atmospheric circulation in the wider North Atlantic region. Cave speleothems offer one of the most promising archives from northern Iberia due to their wide geographic distribution and potential for accurately dated climate reconstruction. Cueva de Asiul, situated in Cantabria (N. Iberia; 43°19'0.63''N, 3°35'28.32''W; 285 m.a.s.l) within the Matienzo karst depression is one such site …

Disorder Influences The Quantum Critical Transport At A Superconductor-To-Insulator Transition, H Q. Nguyen, Shawna M. Hollen, J M. Valles Jr., J Shainline, J. M. Xu Oct 2015

Disorder Influences The Quantum Critical Transport At A Superconductor-To-Insulator Transition, H Q. Nguyen, Shawna M. Hollen, J M. Valles Jr., J Shainline, J. M. Xu

Physics & Astronomy

We isolated flux disorder effects on the transport at the critical point of the quantum magnetic field tuned superconductor-to-insulator transition (BSIT). The experiments employed films patterned into geometrically disordered hexagonal arrays. Spatial variations in the flux per unit cell, which grow in a perpendicular magnetic field, constitute flux disorder. The growth of flux disorder with magnetic field limited the number of BSITs exhibited by a single film due to flux matching effects. The critical metallic resistance at successive BSITs grew with flux disorder contrary to predictions of its universality. These results open the door for controlled studies of disorder effects …

Analyzing And Organizing The Sonic Space Of Vocal Imitation, Davide Andrea Mauro Phd, D. Rocchesso Oct 2015

Analyzing And Organizing The Sonic Space Of Vocal Imitation, Davide Andrea Mauro Phd, D. Rocchesso

Computer Sciences and Electrical Engineering Faculty Research

The sonic space that can be spanned with the voice is vast and complex and, therefore, it is difficult to organize and explore. In order to devise tools that facilitate sound design by vocal sketching we attempt at organizing a database of short excerpts of vocal imitations. By clustering the sound samples on a space whose dimensionality has been reduced to the two principal components, it is experimentally checked how meaningful the resulting clusters are for humans. Eventually, a representative of each cluster, chosen to be close to its centroid, may serve as a landmark in the exploration of the …

Two Distinct Modes Of Metal Ion Binding In The Nuclease Active Site Of A Viral Dna-Packaging Terminase: Insight Into The Two-Metal-Ion Catalytic Mechanism, Haiyan Zhao, Zihan Lin, Anna Y. Lynn, Brittany Varnado, John A. Beutler, Ryan P. Murelli, Stuart F.J. Le Grice, Liang Tang

Publications and Research

Many dsDNA viruses encode DNA-packaging terminases, each containing a nuclease domain that resolves concatemeric DNA into genome-length units. Terminase nucleases resemble the RNase H-superfamily nucleotidyltransferases in folds, and share a two-metal-ion catalytic mechanism. Here we show that residue K428 of a bacteriophage terminase gp2 nuclease domain mediates binding of the metal cofactor Mg2+. A K428A mutation allows visualization, at high resolution, of a metal ion binding mode with a coupled-octahedral configuration at the active site, exhibiting an unusually short metal-metal distance of 2.42 A° . Such proximity of the two metal ions may play an essential role in catalysis by …

A Generalized Force-Modified Potential Energy Surface For Mechanochemical Simulations, Gopinath Subramanian, Nithin Mathew, Jeff Leiding Oct 2015

A Generalized Force-Modified Potential Energy Surface For Mechanochemical Simulations, Gopinath Subramanian, Nithin Mathew, Jeff Leiding

Faculty Publications

We describe the modifications that a spatially varying external load produces on a Born-Oppenheimer potential energy surface (PES) by calculating static quantities of interest. The effects of the external loads are exemplified using electronic structure calculations (at the HF/6-31G- level) of two different molecules: ethane and hexahydro-1,3,5-trinitro-s-triazine (RDX). The calculated transition states and Hessian matrices of stationary points show that spatially varying external loads shift the stationary points and modify the curvature of the PES, thereby affecting the harmonic transition rates by altering both the energy barrier as well as the prefactor. The harmonic spectra of both molecules are blueshifted …

Relativistic Elastic Differential Cross Sections For Equal Mass Nuclei, Charles M. Werneth, Khin M. Maung, W.P. Ford Oct 2015

Relativistic Elastic Differential Cross Sections For Equal Mass Nuclei, Charles M. Werneth, Khin M. Maung, W.P. Ford

Faculty Publications

The effects of relativistic kinematics are studied for nuclear collisions of equal mass nuclei. It is found that the relativistic and non-relativistic elastic scattering amplitudes are nearly indistinguishable, and, hence, the relativistic and non-relativistic differential cross sections become indistinguishable. These results are explained by analyzing the Lippmann–Schwinger equation with the first order optical potential that was employed in the calculation.

Modified Atmosphere Packaging: A Progressive Technology For Shelf-Life Extension Of Fruits And Vegetables, Mahmoud Soltani, Reza Alimardani, Hossein Mobli, Seyed Saeid Mohtasebi

Journal of Applied Packaging Research

Packaging and storage are the final phases in the food industry. Quality preservation, improving safety and reduction of postharvest losses waste are some objectives of the packaging engineering. One of techniques that widely used in packaging of fruits and vegetables are modified atmosphere packaging (MAP). In MAP for fresh fruits and vegetable the air of packaging headspace replaces with a predetermined atmospheric gases different in proportion from that of air. Oxygen, carbon dioxide and nitrogen are the main gases used in MAP for injection to the headspace of pack. The choice and ratio of gases are very dependent upon the …

Nanoindentation Cartography In Al/Al-Cu-Fe Composites: Correlation Between Chemical Heterogeneities And Mechanical Properties, Christophe Tromas, Aurelie Joseph, Veronique Gauthier, Anne Joulain, Sylvain Dubois, Joel Bonneville, Dominique Evidi, Jean-Phillippe Monchoux Oct 2015

Nanoindentation Cartography In Al/Al-Cu-Fe Composites: Correlation Between Chemical Heterogeneities And Mechanical Properties, Christophe Tromas, Aurelie Joseph, Veronique Gauthier, Anne Joulain, Sylvain Dubois, Joel Bonneville, Dominique Evidi, Jean-Phillippe Monchoux

Nanomechanical Testing in Materials Research and Development V

During the last two decades, nanoindentation testing has become a commonly used technique for measuring surface mechanical properties such as hardness or elastic modulus. With devices equipped with a motorized X-Y table, it is now possible to perform large regular nanoindentation arrays in order to make an accurate statistics of the mechanical properties. This method is particularly interesting to study heterogeneous materials. The statistical analysis, associated to mathematical deconvolution methods allows identifying the properties of each individual phase. Furthermore, hardness or elastic modulus maps can be then established and compared to other local properties such as microstructure, crystallographic orientation or …

We present the first coordinated study using two lidars at two separate locations to characterize a 1 h mesoscale gravity wave event in the mesopause region. The simultaneous observations were made with the Student Training and Atmospheric Research (STAR) Na Doppler lidar at Boulder, CO, and the Utah State University Na Doppler lidar and temperature mapper at Logan, UT, on 27 November 2013. The high precision possessed by the STAR lidar enabled these waves to be detected in vertical wind. The mean wave amplitudes are ~0.44 m/s in vertical wind and ~1% in relative temperature at altitudes of 82–107 km. …

Geometric Approach To Convex Subdifferential Calculus, Boris S. Mordukhovich, Nguyen Mau Nam Oct 2015

Geometric Approach To Convex Subdifferential Calculus, Boris S. Mordukhovich, Nguyen Mau Nam

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications and Presentations

In this paper, we develop a geometric approach to convex subdifferential calculus in finite dimensions with employing some ideas of modern variational analysis. This approach allows us to obtain natural and rather easy proofs of basic results of convex subdifferential calculus in full generality and also derive new results of convex analysis concerning optimal value/marginal functions, normals to inverse images of sets under set-valued mappings, calculus rules for coderivatives of single-valued and set-valued mappings, and calculating coderivatives of solution maps to parameterized generalized equations governed by set-valued mappings with convex graphs.

Preservice Teachers’ Pictorial Strategies For A Multistep Multiplicative Fraction Problem, Jae M. Baek, Megan H. Wickstrom, Jennifer M. Tobias, Amanda L. Miller, Elif Safak, Nicole Wessman-Enzinger, J. Vince Kirwan

Faculty Publications - College of Education

Previous research has documented that preservice teachers (PSTs) struggle with under- standing fraction concepts and operations, and misconceptions often stem from their understanding of the referent whole. This study expands research on PSTs’ understanding of wholes by investigating pictorial strategies that 85 PSTs constructed for a multistep fraction task in a multiplicative context. The results show that many PSTs were able to construct valid pictorial strategies, and the strategies were widely diverse with respect to how they made sense of an unknown referent whole of a fraction in multiple steps, how they represented the wholes in their drawings, in which …

“Principal Component Analysis And The Cumulative Gait Index: Translational Tools To Assess Gait Impairments In Rats With Olivocerebellar Ataxia”, Chase Lambert

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Numerous studies suggest that modulation of the cholinergic system through the use of nicotinic agonists can improve motor function in humans or animals with motor disorders. Specifically, although there are no approved therapeutics for patients with ataxia, the nicotinic receptor agonist varenicline has demonstrated efficacy to improve coordination and gait in several groups of patients with different subtypes of ataxia. Importantly, the mechanism underlying the varenicline’s mechanism of action to improve motor function remains to be elucidated. Thus, the purpose of these experiments was to first quantify gait impairments in rats with olivocerebellar ataxia utilizing an objective treadmill-based system to …
