More Educated And More Equal? A Comparative Analysis Of Female Education And Employment In Japan, China And India, Sucharita Sinha Mukherjee Nov 2015

More Educated And More Equal? A Comparative Analysis Of Female Education And Employment In Japan, China And India, Sucharita Sinha Mukherjee

Economics Faculty Publications

This paper attempts to explore the connections between expanding female education and the participation of women in paid employment in Japan, China and India, three of Asia's largest economies. Analysis based on existing data and literature shows that despite the large expansion in educational access in these countries in the last half century, women have lacked egalitarian labour market opportunities. A combination of social discouragement and individual choice largely explains the withdrawal, non-participation or intermittent female presence in the labour force, notwithstanding increased educational access. In taking stock of these issues and debates across these countries, it is argued that …

Asian Options With Harmonic Average, Fares Al-Azemi, Ovidiu Calin Nov 2015

Asian Options With Harmonic Average, Fares Al-Azemi, Ovidiu Calin

Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences

The foreign exchange markets felt the necessity of using contracts written on harmonic averages. They are attractive because are cheaper than the contracts written on the arithmetic average, and make more financial sense than contracts written on geometric averages. The goal of this paper is to consider Asian options and future contracts on harmonic averages of stock values. Since the harmonic average of a set of lognormal random variables does not have an explicit representation, a close-form pricing formula for options and futures is missing. However, we obtain the value of a future contract expressed as an infinite series and …

Squeezed Versus Non-Gaussian Fluctuations In Resonance Fluorescence, Héctor M. Castro-Beltr?N, Luis Gutiérrez, Levente Horvath Nov 2015

Squeezed Versus Non-Gaussian Fluctuations In Resonance Fluorescence, Héctor M. Castro-Beltr?N, Luis Gutiérrez, Levente Horvath

Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences

We study theoretically the fluorescence of a two-level atom driven by a laser of weak to moderate intensity, that is, a regime where squeezing would occur. Close to saturation atomic fluctuations dominate and become non-Gaussian, degrading the squeezing. Using Bloch equations and quantum jump trajectories we find that allowing a moderate degree of non-linearity, conditional homodyne detection [G.T. Foster, L.A. Orozco, H.M. Castro-Beltran, H.J. Carmichael, Phys. Rev. Lett. 85, pp. 3149-3152, 2000] would actually help in observing the elusive squeezing in the fluorescence by increasing the size of the characteristic negative spectrum.

In this paper, we define and study a new class of analytic functions by using the concept of generalized close-to-convexity. Coefficient results, Hankel determinant problem and some other interesting properties of this class are investigated. Results proved in this paper may stimulate further research in this area.

Data Analysis Of Medical Records In Veterinary Hospital Using Clustering Method And Association Rule, Tsung-Chih Hsiao, Shu-Ling Shieh, Tzer-Long Chen, Chia-Hui Liu, Ying-Chi Yeh Nov 2015

Data Analysis Of Medical Records In Veterinary Hospital Using Clustering Method And Association Rule, Tsung-Chih Hsiao, Shu-Ling Shieh, Tzer-Long Chen, Chia-Hui Liu, Ying-Chi Yeh

Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences

Since pets have been promoted from working livestock to family companions, pet industry is also progressing with the development of nowadays? society. To reduce the negligence of the diagnostic process, the correlations between the symptoms and treatments of sick pets are collected. Medical records of a veterinary hospital are used as the input dataset. The clustering algorithms and association rules use two methods to investigate the practice. The result indicates that urology, dermatology or internal medicines are highly correlated with possible symptoms. The conclusion could assist doctors to find the association rules between diseases and symptoms of pets. In this …

Gaussian Nonlinear Line Attractor For Learning Multidimensional Data, Theus H. Aspiras, Vijayan K. Asari, Wesam Sakla

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

The human brain’s ability to extract information from multidimensional data modeled by the Nonlinear Line Attractor (NLA), where nodes are connected by polynomial weight sets. Neuron connections in this architecture assumes complete connectivity with all other neurons, thus creating a huge web of connections. We envision that each neuron should be connected to a group of surrounding neurons with weighted connection strengths that reduces with proximity to the neuron. To develop the weighted NLA architecture, we use a Gaussian weighting strategy to model the proximity, which will also reduce the computation times significantly.

Once all data has been trained in …

Science Is Helpful For Engineering Applications: A Theoretical Explanation Of An Empirical Observation, Olga Kosheleva, Vladik Kreinovich Nov 2015

Science Is Helpful For Engineering Applications: A Theoretical Explanation Of An Empirical Observation, Olga Kosheleva, Vladik Kreinovich

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

Empirical evidence shows that when engineering design uses scientific analysis, we usually get a much better performance that for the system designed by using a trial-and-error engineering approach. In this paper, we provide a quantitative explanation for this empirical observation.

Why The Range Of A Robust Statistic Under Interval Uncertainty Is Often Easier To Compute, Olga Kosheleva, Vladik Kreinovich Nov 2015

Why The Range Of A Robust Statistic Under Interval Uncertainty Is Often Easier To Compute, Olga Kosheleva, Vladik Kreinovich

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

In statistical analysis, we usually use the observed sample values x1, ..., xn to compute the values of several statistics v(x1, ..., xn) -- such as sample mean, sample variance, etc. The usual formulas for these statistics implicitly assume that we know the exact values x1, ..., xn. In practice, the sample values X1, ..., Xn come from measurements and are, thus, only approximations to the actual (unknown) values x1, ..., xn of the corresponding quantity. Often, the only information that we have …

Positive Consequences Of Negative Attitude: Game-Theoretic Analysis, Mahdokhat Afravi, Vladik Kreinovich Nov 2015

Positive Consequences Of Negative Attitude: Game-Theoretic Analysis, Mahdokhat Afravi, Vladik Kreinovich

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

At first glance, the world would be a better place if all the people had positive attitude towards each other. It is known that this is not always the case: sometimes, the excess of positive attitude can lead to negative consequences. In this paper, we show that, vice versa, a reasonable amount of negative attitude can make life better for everyone. What is therefore needed is not the exclusive appearance of positive attitude, but rather a balance -- titled towards moderately positive attitude.

Maximum Entropy Approach Is Not As Arbitrary As It May Seem At First Glance, Olga Kosheleva, Vladik Kreinovich Nov 2015

Maximum Entropy Approach Is Not As Arbitrary As It May Seem At First Glance, Olga Kosheleva, Vladik Kreinovich

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

When we only have partial information about the probability distribution, i.e., when several different probability distributions are consistent with our knowledge, then it makes sense to select a distribution with the largest entropy. In particular, when we only know that the quantity is located within a certain interval -- and we have no information about the probability of different values within this intervals -- then it is reasonable to assume that all these values are equally probable, i.e., that we have a uniform distribution on this interval. The problem with this idea is that if we apply it to the …

Decision Making Under Interval (And More General) Uncertainty: Monetary Vs. Utility Approaches, Vladik Kreinovich Nov 2015

Decision Making Under Interval (And More General) Uncertainty: Monetary Vs. Utility Approaches, Vladik Kreinovich

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

In many situations, e.g., in financial and economic decision making, the decision results either in a money gain (or loss) and/or in the gain of goods that can be exchanged for money or for other goods. In such situations, interval uncertainty means that we do not know the exact amount of money that we will get for each possible decision, we only know lower and upper bounds on this amount. In this case, a natural idea is to assign a fair price to different alternatives, and then to use these fair prices to select the best alternative. In the talk, …

On The Importance Of Duality And Multi-Ality In Mathematics Education, Mourat Tchoshanov, Olga Kosheleva, Vladik Kreinovich Nov 2015

On The Importance Of Duality And Multi-Ality In Mathematics Education, Mourat Tchoshanov, Olga Kosheleva, Vladik Kreinovich

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

For each mathematical object, there are usually several different equivalent representations: for example, a spatial object can be represented either in geometric terms, or by a function that describes its shape. The need for several representations comes from the fact that each of these representations is useful in solving some problems for which the use of other representations is less helpful. Thus, the more representations a student knows, the more capable this student is of solving mathematical problems. In this paper, we propose a general formal description of the corresponding notion of duality (and, more generally, "multi-ality"), and we explain …

From Equations To Tri-Quations And Multi-Quations, Mourat Tchoshanov, Olga Kosheleva, Vladik Kreinovich Nov 2015

From Equations To Tri-Quations And Multi-Quations, Mourat Tchoshanov, Olga Kosheleva, Vladik Kreinovich

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

In general, an equation A(x1, ..., xn)= B(x1, ..., xn) corresponds to the situation when we have two quantities A(x1, ..., xn) and B(x1, ..., xn) which are known to be equal, we know how each of these quantities depends on the unknown parameters x1, ..., xn, and we want to find the values of the unknowns xi from this equality -- and from other similar equalities. In some practical situations, instead of two equal values, we have three …

Biomedical developments in the 21st century provide an unprecedented opportunity to gain a dynamic systems-level and human-specific understanding of the causes and pathophysiologies of disease. This understanding is a vital need, in view of continuing failures in health research, drug discovery, and clinical translation. The full potential of advanced approaches may not be achieved within a 20th-century conceptual framework dominated by animal models. Novel technologies are being integrated into environmental health research and are also applicable to disease research, but these advances need a new medical research and drug discovery paradigm to gain maximal benefits. We suggest a new conceptual …

Parent-Child Math Anxiety And Math-Gender Stereotypes Predict Adolescents' Math Education Outcomes, J. Casad Nov 2015

Parent-Child Math Anxiety And Math-Gender Stereotypes Predict Adolescents' Math Education Outcomes, J. Casad

Psychology Faculty Works

Two studies examined social determinants of adolescents' math anxiety including parents' own math anxiety and children's endorsement of math-gender stereotypes. In Study 1, parent-child dyads were surveyed and the interaction between parent and child math anxiety was examined, with an eye to same- and other-gender dyads. Results indicate that parent's math anxiety interacts with daughters' and sons' anxiety to predict math self-efficacy, GPA, behavioral intentions, math attitudes, and math devaluing. Parents with lower math anxiety showed a positive relationship to children's math outcomes when children also had lower anxiety. The strongest relationships were found with same-gender dyads, particularly Mother-Daughter dyads. …

Identification And Survival Outcomes Of A Cohort Of Patients With Cancer Of Unknown Primary In Ontario, Canada., Chong S Kim, Malek B Hannouf, Sisira Sarma, George B Rodrigues, Peter K Rogan, Salaheddin M Mahmud, Eric Winquist, Muriel Brackstone, Gregory S Zaric

Epidemiology and Biostatistics Publications

BACKGROUND: Cancer of unknown primary origin (CUP) is defined by the presence of pathologically identified metastatic disease without clinical or radiological evidence of a primary tumour. Our objective was to identify incident cases of CUP in Ontario, Canada, and determine the influence of histology and sites of metastases on overall survival (OS).

MATERIAL AND METHODS: We used the Ontario Cancer Registry (OCR) and the Same-Day Surgery and Discharge Abstract Database (SDS/DAD) to identify patients diagnosed with CUP in Ontario between 1 January 2000, and 31 December 2005. Patient diagnostic information, including histology and survival data, was obtained from the OCR. …
