Human Activity Recognition: Discriminative Models Using Statistical Chord-Length And Optical Flow Motion Features, Mahmoud Elmezain, Essam O. Abdel-Rahman

Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences

Despite the vast amount of research on the analysis of existing and ongoing human activity, there are still significant challenges worthy of address. In this paper, an innovative approach for human action recognition based on discriminative models like CRFs, HCRFs and LDCRFs is proposed. To handle human action recognition, different number of window size ranging from 0 to 7 are applied using a compact computationally-efficient descriptor as statistical chord-length features (SCLF), in addition to optical flow motion features that derived from 3D spatio-temporal action volume. Our experiment on a standard benchmark action KTH, as well as our IIKT dataset show …

Chaotic Dynamics And Synchronization Of Cournot Duopoly Game With A Logarithmic Demand Function, A. M. A. El-Sayed, A. A. Elsadany, A. M. Awad

Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences

This paper analyzed the dynamics of Cournot duopoly game with a logarithmic demand function. We assumed that the owners of both firms played with bounded rationality expectation. The existence of equilibrium points and its local stability of the output game are investigated. The complex dynamics, bifurcations and chaos are displayed by numerical experiments. Numerical methods showed that the higher values of speeds of adjustment act on the Nash equilibrium that becomes unstable through period doubling bifurcations, more complex attractors are created around it. The chaotic behavior of the game has been controlled by using feedback control method. we investigated the …

Intuitionistic Fuzzy Einstein Prioritized Weighted Average Operators And Their Application To Multiple Attribute Group Decision Making, Rajkumar Verma, Bhudev Sharma

Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences

This study investigates the multiple attribute decision making under intuitionistic fuzzy environment in which the attributes and the decision makers are in different priority levels. In this paper, we first propose two new intuitionistic fuzzy aggregation operators such as the intuitionistic fuzzy Einstein prioritized weighted average (IFEPWA) operator and the intuitionistic fuzzy Einstein prioritized weighted geometric (IFEPWG) operator for aggregating intuitionistic fuzzy information. These proposed operators can capture the prioritization phenomenon among the aggregated arguments. The properties of the new aggregation operators are studied in details and their special cases are examined. Furthermore, based on the proposed operators, an approach …

Visualisation Of A Three-Dimensional (3d) Object’S Optimal Reality In A 3d Map On A Mobile Device, Adamu Abubakar, Akram M. Zeki, Haruna Chiroma, Sanah Abdullahi Muaz, Mueen Uddin, Nadeem Mahmood

Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences

Prior research on the subject of visualisation of three-dimensional (3D) objects by coordinate systems has proved that all objects are translated so that the eye is at the origin (eye space). The multiplication of a point in eye space leads to perspective space, and dividing perspective space leads to screen space. This paper utilised these findings and investigated the key factor(s) in the visualisation of 3D objects within 3D maps on mobile devices. The motivation of the study comes from the fact that there is a disparity between 3D objects within a 3D map on a mobile device and those …

A Heuristic Method For Integer Programming Using Discrete Hybrid Evolutionary Algorithm, Hong Li, Li Zhang, Yong-Chang Jiao

Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences

A discrete hybrid evolutionary algorithm is developed to solve global numerical optimization problems with discrete variables. In this algorithm, the orthogonal experimental design acts as the crossover operator to achieve crossover, and the migration operator is employed to keep the population’s diversity. In addition, the simplified quadratic interpolation method is taken as a local search operator, which is adopted to improve the algorithm’s local search ability. Moreover, a few of foreign chromosomes, which are generated via randomly perturbing the best candidate chromosome in the current population, are introduced into the next generation to avoid most of chromosomes gradually clustering around …

A More Secure Dynamic Id-Based Remote Authentication Scheme Using Smart Cards, Dianli Guo, Fengtong Wen, Chengbo Xu Nov 2015

A More Secure Dynamic Id-Based Remote Authentication Scheme Using Smart Cards, Dianli Guo, Fengtong Wen, Chengbo Xu

Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences

In 2013, Chang et al. proposed an untraceable dynamic-identity-based remote user authentication scheme with verifiable password update. In this paper, we analyze Chang et al.s scheme and show that their scheme suffers from off-line password guessing attack, server spoofing attack and impersonation attack. Moreover, their scheme is traceable since the attacker can obtain the identity of the user. Thereby, we propose an alternative scheme based on elliptic curve cryptosystem and completely automated public turing test to tell computer and humans apart (CAPTCHA) technique. Besides, we demonstrate the completeness of the proposed scheme through the BAN-logic. Compared with other related existing …

Energy Minimization By Optimally Relocating Mobile Relays In Multi-Hop Wireless Ad Hoc Networks, Seokhoon Yoon Nov 2015

Energy Minimization By Optimally Relocating Mobile Relays In Multi-Hop Wireless Ad Hoc Networks, Seokhoon Yoon

Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences

This paper considers the energy minimization problem in a multi-hop wireless ad hoc network that consists of regular nodes and mobile relays. In such a network, mobile relays may relocate to optimal positions such that energy consumption for data transmission isminimized. In order to find the optimal positions for mobile relays, the mobile relay optimal relocation (MROR) problem is first defined. Since the cost in terms of data transmission energy can be modeled using a convex function, the problem is formulated as a convex optimization problem over mobile relay position variables. Using dual decomposition and subgradient methods enables mobile relays …

Encryption Applications Of A Generalized Chaotic Map, Salwa K. Abd-El-Hafiz, Ahmed G. Radwan, Sherif H. Abdel-Haleem

Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences

This paper presents the mathematical aspects of a generalized Sine map with arbitrary powers and scaling factor. The added parameters increase the degrees of freedom of the Sine map and give a versatile response that can be utilized in many applications. For each added parameter, the map’s chaotic behavior is analyzed using fixed points, bifurcation diagrams and Lyapunov exponents. Furthermore, two image encryption applications are introduced based on the generalized Sinemap. The first system only performs pixelvalue substitutions to focus on the effect of utilizing the generalized map. This system is controlled by fifteen different parameters and initial conditions of …

Generation Of Fractals Via Self-Similar Group Of Kannan Iterated Function System, R. Uthayakumar, A. Gowrisankar

Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences

In this paper, we introduce and investigate some definition and property of self-similar group and strong self-similar group of Kannan contraction. These groups are found as the attractor of a Kannan iterated function system (KIFS). This paper improves the Hutchinson-Barnsley theory in the sense of KIFS. Fractal set can be constructed by self-similar and strong self-similar group in the sense of KIFS of compact topological group. Finally, we prove the relation between profinite group and strong self-similar group of Kannan contraction.

On-Line/Off-Line Threshold Proxy Re-Signature Scheme Through The Simulation Approach, Xiaodong Yang, Guojuan Gao, Yanan Li, Yan Li, Caifen Wang

Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences

On-line/off-line threshold proxy re-signatures can efficiently improve the the performance of threshold proxy re-signature schemes. A simulation theorem for on-line/off-line threshold proxy re-signature schemes is presented in this paper. This theorem provides a theoretical basis for constructing an on-line/off-line threshold proxy re-signature scheme through the simulation approach, where the security of an on-line/off-line threshold proxy re-signature scheme can be reduced to that of its underlying divisible online/ off-line proxy re-signature scheme. Furthermore, we propose an on-line/off-line threshold proxy re-signature scheme which is proven secure (unforgeable and robust) under the computational Diffie-Hellman assumption and the discrete logarithm assumption. The on-line phase …

A Bandwidth Efficient Pareto Minimal Approach For Gesture Based Video Streaming, S. Swarna Parvathi, K. S. Easwarakumar, N. Devi

Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences

Deaf, Hard-Of-Hearing and Speech-Impaired (D-HOH-SI) individuals have a specific interest in the development of affordable high-quality videoconferencing as a means of communicating with their family members and peers using sign language. Unlike Video Relay Service, which is intended to support communication between a caller using sign language and another party using spoken language, videoconferencing can directly be used either between two deaf signers or between a caller using sign language and the other using spoken language without the need of an interpreter. This paper proposes a Bandwidth Aware Gesture Based Layered (BAGBL) framework for sign language recognition based video conferencing …

Improved Iterative Sparseness For Least Squares Support Vector Machines, Zhong Lu-Sheng, Chen Li-Yong, Gong Jin-Hong, Zhu Zhen-Min Nov 2015

Improved Iterative Sparseness For Least Squares Support Vector Machines, Zhong Lu-Sheng, Chen Li-Yong, Gong Jin-Hong, Zhu Zhen-Min

Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences

An improved iterative sparse algorithm is proposed to accelerate the execution of sparse least squares support vector machines(LS-SVM). Firstly, the technique of iterative approximation to the L0-norm is used to sparsify the LS-SVM for regression. However, each iteration requires solving a linear system with expensive computation compared to training a single LS-SVM. In this paper, improved conjugate gradient (ICG) method is given to reduce the computational cost, which is based on transforming the constrained primal problem in LS-SVM into an unconstrained minimization problem. Then the solution to the unconstrained minimization problem is obtained by using the CG method only once …

A Priori And A Posteriori Error Analysis For A Linear Elliptic Problem With Dynamic Boundary Condition, Toufic El Arwadi, Séréna Dib, Toni Sayah Nov 2015

A Priori And A Posteriori Error Analysis For A Linear Elliptic Problem With Dynamic Boundary Condition, Toufic El Arwadi, Séréna Dib, Toni Sayah

Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences

In this paper, we study the time dependent linear elliptic problem with dynamic boundary condition. The problem is discretized by the backward Euler’s scheme in time and finite elements in space. In this work, an optimal a priori error estimate is established and an optimal a posteriori error with two types of computable error indicators is proved. The first one is linked to the time discretization and the second one to the space discretization. Using these a posteriori errors estimates, an adaptive algorithm for computing the solution is proposed. Finally, numerical experiments are presented to show the effectiveness of the …

A Colorless, Directionless And Contention-Less Roadm That Utilizes Interconnected Wsss, Li Zhao, Weiqiang Sun, Weisheng Hu Nov 2015

A Colorless, Directionless And Contention-Less Roadm That Utilizes Interconnected Wsss, Li Zhao, Weiqiang Sun, Weisheng Hu

Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences

We propose a novel colorless, directionless and contention-less (CDC) reconfigurable optical add/drop multiplexer (ROADM) that is composed of interconnected wavelength selective switches (WSSs). The key components of this ROADM are interconnected WSSs. Using the connecting branches from WSS to WSS, the channels at any wavelengths from any input may exploit any transponder in the photonic ROADM node. Both of simulation and analytical results showed that when the number of connecting branches (r) equals 2, same blocking performance may be achieved as CDC case (where r equals to N-1). Meanwhile, it achieves significant capital expense saving when compared with other equivalent …

Collaborate To Innovate: Expanding Access To Faculty Patents Through The Institutional Repository And The Library Catalog, Andrew Wesolek, Jan Comfort, Lisa Bodenheimer

Publications

Institutional repositories and library catalogs have long been used to promote and provide access to scholarly articles, monographs, and other “traditional” forms of scholarship. However, faculty at many institutions participate in “non-traditional” forms of research, such as patents. This work explores the use of Clemson University’s institutional repository and library catalog in promoting and providing access to the patents granted to its inventors. More specifically, the authors outline the project from generating metadata for patents, and cross-walking it into a form that can be batch uploaded to a bepress Digital Commons Repository. They then explore the process of harvesting the …

My office is on the thirteenth floor of an eighteen-story concrete tower that sits in the heart of campus. The building is so massively disproportionate to other buildings that it looms over the entire campus. Inside, the hallways are long and narrow, with no windows or natural light. A bank of six large elevators takes up the center space of each floor. Perhaps it is not surprising that this office tower has become the source of campus lore and legends among students and faculty. During my first semester on campus, a student asked if I knew the history of my …

Outgroup Prejudice From An Evolutionary Perspective: Survey Evidence From Europe, Serdar Kaya Ph.D. Nov 2015

Outgroup Prejudice From An Evolutionary Perspective: Survey Evidence From Europe, Serdar Kaya Ph.D.

Journal of International and Global Studies

This study investigates the root causes of outgroup prejudice. The literature explains prejudice primarily as a result of the perception of threat or the lack of optimal intergroup contact. The literature also emphasizes that individuals who are prejudiced against one outgroup are more likely to be prejudiced against other outgroups as well. This study does not react to these established theories. Instead, it argues from an evolutionary social psychological perspective that the root cause of outgroup prejudice is an activated sense of distrust and caution. In ancestral environments, higher levels of distrust and caution helped humans better protect themselves and …

Is Political Evolution Over? An Anthropological Analysis Of The Twentieth Century, Robert Bates Graber Ph.D. Nov 2015

Is Political Evolution Over? An Anthropological Analysis Of The Twentieth Century, Robert Bates Graber Ph.D.

Journal of International and Global Studies

Why did human societies grow from small bands and villages into highly populous nations and empires? This process, termed political evolution, is explained by one major strand of anthropological theorizing as having resulted from population pressure, warfare, and conquest. War is seen as having been essential because polities do not willingly surrender autonomy. The 20th century apparently brought both an increase in population pressure (the ratio of humans to the available resource base) and a considerable amount of war, but only a modest increase in political evolution as measured by the average population of nations. One interpretation of this is …

Energy-Efficient Computational Chemistry: Comparison Of X86 And Arm Systems, Kristopher Keipert, Gaurav Mitra, Vaibhav Sunriyal, Sarom S. Leang, Masha Sosonkina, Alistair P. Rendell, Mark S. Gordon

Computational Modeling & Simulation Engineering Faculty Publications

The computational efficiency and energy-to-solution of several applications using the GAMESS quantum chemistry suite of codes is evaluated for 32-bit and 64-bit ARM-based computers, and compared to an x86 machine. The x86 system completes all benchmark computations more quickly than either ARM system and is the best choice to minimize time to solution. The ARM64 and ARM32 computational performances are similar to each other for Hartree-Fock and density functional theory energy calculations. However, for memory-intensive second-order perturbation theory energy and gradient computations the lower ARM32 read/write memory bandwidth results in computation times as much as 86% longer than on the …
