Hohenberg-Kohn Theorems In Electrostatic And Uniform Magnetostatic Fields, Xiao-Yin Pan, Viraht Sahni Nov 2015

Hohenberg-Kohn Theorems In Electrostatic And Uniform Magnetostatic Fields, Xiao-Yin Pan, Viraht Sahni

Publications and Research

The Hohenberg-Kohn (HK) theorems of bijectivity between the external scalar potential and the gauge invariant nondegenerate ground state density, and the consequent Euler variational principle for the density, are proved for arbitrary electrostatic field and the constraint of fixed electron number. The HK theorems are generalized for spinless electrons to the added presence of an external uniform magnetostatic field by introducing the new constraint of fixed canonical orbital angular momentum. Thereby, a bijective relationship between the external scalar and vector potentials, and the gauge invariant nondegenerate ground state density and physical current density, is proved. A corresponding Euler variational principle …

Basal Salivary Oxytocin And Skin To Skin Contact Among Lactating Mothers Of Premature Infants, Jessica Marie Gordon Nov 2015

Basal Salivary Oxytocin And Skin To Skin Contact Among Lactating Mothers Of Premature Infants, Jessica Marie Gordon

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation research explored mechanisms of human milk (HM) expulsion by describing the effects of skin to skin contact (SSC) on maternal basal oxytocin (OT) secretion among 20 premature mothers with hospitalized premature infants. This one-group, repeated measures design consisted of: 1) daily SSC with covariant data via self-report diary and 2) maternal salivary OT with and without SSC at 4 time points were collected over a 7 day time frame. Results indicate that mean levels of basal OT increase over time (M 234 pg/ml, SD 108 pg/ml time point 1; M 257 pg/ml, SD 125 pg/ml time point 3). …

Adolescent Females With High-Functioning Asd: Self And Mothers’ Perspectives Of Their School And Social Experiences, Lindsey Land Nov 2015

Adolescent Females With High-Functioning Asd: Self And Mothers’ Perspectives Of Their School And Social Experiences, Lindsey Land

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Although the prevalence of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is currently 1 in 68 (Centers for Disease Control, 2015) and research in this area is growing, high-functioning individuals on the spectrum are often overlooked. This is because of their relatively milder symptoms. The recent collapse of Asperger Syndrome (AS) with autism in the most recent version of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM-5; APA, 2013) also has obscured the differences that may exist between those with higher vs. lower levels of functioning. Among youth with High-Functioning Autism Spectrum Disorder (HFASD), girls are a particularly understudied and potentially vulnerable group. Previous research …

In Situ Studies Of Limestone Dissolution In A Coastal Submarine Spring, Rachel Marie Schweers Nov 2015

In Situ Studies Of Limestone Dissolution In A Coastal Submarine Spring, Rachel Marie Schweers

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Limestone dissolution in karst environments is likely due to geochemistry of the water, the actions of microbial communities, and the effect of water flow. We explored the rate of limestone dissolution and will examine here the microbial communities associated with the limestone. A conduit within the brackish cave, Double Keyhole Spring, on the coast of central west Florida was the site of the experiment. PVC pipes (5cm x 16cm) were filled with crushed limestone that was screened to a 1.9cm – 2.54cm size range. There were three treatments (5 replicates each): Control - sealed autoclaved controls with limestone and conduit …

Simple Method Transfer From Batch To Continuous Chromatography Process To Fit Parameters To Business Needs, Rene Gantier, Karl Rogler, Xhorxhi Gjoka, Ron Noel, Alexander Martino, Mark Schofield Nov 2015

Simple Method Transfer From Batch To Continuous Chromatography Process To Fit Parameters To Business Needs, Rene Gantier, Karl Rogler, Xhorxhi Gjoka, Ron Noel, Alexander Martino, Mark Schofield

Integrated Continuous Biomanufacturing II

Multicolumn chromatography (MCC) is a proven technique to significantly improve performance of bio-processes by increasing specific productivity, reducing volume of resin used and enabling disposable, continuous and integrated processes. But the transfer of process parameters from batch to continuous mode is perceived as complex and could limit adoption at clinical and manufacturing scales.

We have developed and tested a new method to translate data from a minimal number of single column runs into a multicolumn process with predictable performance at large scale. Depending on the titre of the product and the processing time required, the method predicts the optimal number …

Mathematical Modeling Of A Bioreactor Producing Epo-Hr Operating In Perfusion Mode, Osman Fernandez, Raydel Alvarez, Ernesto Chico, Adolfo Castillo, Julio Dustet

Integrated Continuous Biomanufacturing II

The interest in use perfusion mode has increased in the last years, due to an increased awareness of perfusion advantages, some general improvement in equipment reliability, and a broadening of operational skills in the biomanufacturing industry. However, mathematical modeling of bioreactors in continuous mode with cell retention (perfusion mode) with concomitant cell bleeding is still emerging, because this scheme has a few applications in global biotechnology industry. The case of study was industrial fermentation process of CHO cells producing EPO-hr. The model involves a total of 7 equations and 19 variables. In order to fix the degrees of freedom were …

Biopharmaceutical Capacity Planning For Batch And Semi-Continuous Bioprocesses Under Various Strategic Criteria, Cyrus Siganporia, Thomas Daszkowski, Andreas Schluk, Brijesh Rao, Lazaros Papageorgiou, Suzanne Farid

Integrated Continuous Biomanufacturing II

Biopharmaceutical companies with expanding portfolios of commercial therapeutics face increasing pressure to meet market demands whilst minimising costs and capital expenditure. Attaining optimal production plans is made more problematic by portfolios containing products with different production modes: batch and semi-continuous. Semi-continuous perfusion-mode products often exhibit a distinct separation of upstream and downstream manufacturing via an intermediate freezing step. This flexibility adds further complexity which needs to be efficiently overcome during the optimisation process. An added complexity to having different process modes is that changeover times are different, leading to computationally expensive sequence-dependent changeover times. Considering the implications of incorrect capacity …

Continuous Purification Of Hepatitis C Virus-Like Particles By Multi-Column Chromatography, Ricardo Silva, Alex Xenopoulos, Jose Mota, Cristina Peixoto, Manuel Carrondo, Paula Alves

Integrated Continuous Biomanufacturing II

Novel biopharmaceutical products, such as virus-like particles (VLPs) and viral vectors, constitute a challenging task for downstream processing (DSP). Recoveries achieved to reach required purities are significantly inferior compared to more common antibody and other recombinant processes. Therefore, the biopharmaceutical industry is looking for alternative downstream strategies capable of improving purification yields and decreasing cost while maintaining product quality. One of many possible improvements to DSP is to replace single-column batch operation by continuous, or semi-continuous, multi-column chromatography.

A single-column batch chromatographic operation used for capture is limited by the dynamic binding capacity (DBC) of the target product. For high-value …

Envisioning A Modern Federal-State Partnership In The Reauthorization Of The Hea As An Engine To Increase Social Mobility, F. King Alexander, Ashley Arceneaux

Journal of Student Financial Aid

Financial aid makes up the bulk of federal higher education spending, but do those dollars make a difference to needy students? A look at Federal Work-Study and Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant allocations show that a disproportionate amount of funding goes to private universities with high tuition and low Federal Pell Grant enrollment. Additionally, many financial aid awards use cost of attendance as a factor in determining award amounts, creating an unintentional incentive for tuition increases. These elements contribute to a funding environment that favors private universities over publics. When considered alongside the fact that pervasive state disinvestment has caused …

Conant, Pavlo Gilchuk, Jennifer J. Gray, Mu Zheng, Xinnan Niu, William Hildebrand, Andrew J. Link, Sebastian Joyce

Chemistry Faculty Research

Purpose

MHC class I presentation of peptides allows T cells to survey the cytoplasmic protein milieu of host cells. During infection, presentation of self peptides is, in part, replaced by presentation of microbial peptides. However, little is known about the self peptides presented during infection, despite the fact that microbial infections alter host cell gene expression patterns and protein metabolism.

Experimental design

The self peptide repertoire presented by HLA-A*01;01, HLA-A*02;01, HLA-B*07;02, HLA-B*35;01, and HLA-B*45;01 (where HLA is human leukocyte antigen) was determined by tandem MS before and after vaccinia virus infection.

Results

We observed a profound alteration in the self …

Evaluation Of The Snow Thermal Model (Sntherm) Through Continuous In Situ Observations Of Snow’S Physical Properties At The Crest-Safe Field Experiment, José Alberto Infante Corona, Jonathan Muñoz, Tarendra Lakhankar, Peter Romanov, Reza Khanbilvardi

Publications and Research

Snowpack properties like temperature or density are the result of a complex energy and mass balance process in the snowpack that varies temporally and spatially. The Snow Thermal Model (SNTHERM) is a 1-dimensional model, energy and mass balance-driven, that simulates these properties. This article analyzes the simulated snowpack properties using SNTHERM forced with two datasets, namely measured meteorological data at the Cooperative Remote Sensing Science and Technology-Snow Analysis and Field Experiment (CREST-SAFE) site and the National Land Data Assimilation System (NLDAS). The study area is located on the premises of Caribou Municipal Airport at Caribou (ME, USA). The model evaluation …

Flow And Scour Constrainst On Uprooting Of Pioneer Woody Seedlings, Sharon Bywater-Reyes, Andrew C. Wilcox, John C. Stella, Anne Lightbody

Geosciences Faculty Publications

Scour and uprooting during flood events is a major disturbance agent that affects plant mortality rates and subsequent vegetation composition and density, setting the trajectory of physical-biological interactions in rivers. During flood events, riparian plants may be uprooted if they are subjected to hydraulic drag forces greater than their resisting force. We measured the resisting force of woody seedlings established on river bars with in situ lateral pull tests that simulated flood flows with and without substrate scour. We quantified the influence of seedling sizes, species (Populus and Tamarix), water-table depth, and scour depth on resisting force. Seedling …

Back To The Future: What Previous Hea Reauthorizations Might Say About The Next One, Dan Madzelan Nov 2015

Back To The Future: What Previous Hea Reauthorizations Might Say About The Next One, Dan Madzelan

Journal of Student Financial Aid

For 50 years, the Higher Education Act has been the primary vehicle for advancing federal higher education policy. Many policymakers and interested observers expect its upcoming reauthorization to address three overarching topic areas: college affordability, institutional quality, and student safety. Indeed, previous reauthorizations have addressed specific issues within each of these areas—expanded financial aid availability and process simplification, third-party (accreditors and states) oversight of institutions, and assurances that students have safe learning environments. Yet we cannot say that these are settled issues. This article describes previously implemented policies in the hope that a better understanding of the past might help …

Comparison Of Microfacet Brdf Model To Modified Beckmann-Kirchhoff Brdf Model For Rough And Smooth Surfaces, Samuel D. Butler, Stephen E. Nauyoks, Michael A. Marciniak Nov 2015

Comparison Of Microfacet Brdf Model To Modified Beckmann-Kirchhoff Brdf Model For Rough And Smooth Surfaces, Samuel D. Butler, Stephen E. Nauyoks, Michael A. Marciniak

Faculty Publications

A popular class of BRDF models is the microfacet models, where geometric optics is assumed. In contrast, more complex physical optics models may more accurately predict the BRDF, but the calculation is more resource intensive. These seemingly disparate approaches are compared in detail for the rough and smooth surface approximations of the modified Beckmann-Kirchhoff BRDF model, assuming Gaussian surface statistics. An approximation relating standard Fresnel reflection with the semi-rough surface polarization term, Q, is presented for unpolarized light. For rough surfaces, the angular dependence of direction cosine space is shown to be identical to the angular dependence in the microfacet …

Kelvin Probe Electrode For Field Detection Of Corrosion Of Steel In Concrete, Leonidas Philip Emmenegger Nov 2015

Kelvin Probe Electrode For Field Detection Of Corrosion Of Steel In Concrete, Leonidas Philip Emmenegger

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

While the Kelvin Probe (KP) has been used in a variety of surface scanning applications, the use of the KP in reinforced concrete structures to detect corrosion has been pioneered by previous work performed at the University of South Florida. However, in that work, the scale and construction of the probes was not suited to use in the field. This is primarily attributable to the small operating disk-to-concrete gap which would make the probe unable to accommodate road conditions, such as irregularities in the grading of the road, and local pitting of the surface. Therefore, it was important to investigate …
